This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the provincial department of health and wellness is encouraging women to have regular check-ups
According to the department, about 1 500 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the Western Cape, with primary health care being a critical first step
It says the prevalence of breast cancer is increasing in South Africa, and globally Furthermore, women are diagnosed with more advanced breast cancer and have lower survival rates Therefore, women need to be diligent about their breast health, and seek help early, the department said in a statement issued on Monday
Clinics play a crucial role in assessing and identifying warning signs and facilitating prompt referrals to sites for definitive diagnoses and further management Teams of professionals, including nurses, clerks, physiotherapists, genetic services, dietitians, radiographers, doctors, psychologists, social workers, and support staff, alongside community partners such as Reach for Recovery, Project Flamingo, and Pink Lady Apples at Tygerberg Hospital, lead the fight against breast cancer and assist patients throughout their breast cancer journey,
TAKE CONTROL OF BREAST HEALTH THIS OCTOBER
the department says
ASTORYOFSTRENGTH
Parow resident Kulsum Abrahams (63) has been in remission for 10 years In 2014, she experienced pain in her left breast Tests at Tygerberg Hospital confirmed that she had cancer
Abrahams underwent surgery and chemotherapy, enduring hair loss, fatigue, and painful side-effects Today she volunteers with Reach for Recovery, counselling other patients
"Do not be afraid to ask for help Know your body Do self-examinations regularly Live a healthy lifestyle,” Abrahams advises
She also praised the hospital staff “They are wonderful, you can ask them anything and they are always ready to assist,” she says
GETEXAMINED
The health department says in its statement that breast cancer is not just one disease, and every breast cancer patient needs to be treated individually, taking into consideration their physiology and the cancer characteristics
To achieve this, every patient is discussed at weekly virtual multidisciplinary meetings across the service ecosystem hosted by Tygerberg Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital, which bring together surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counsellors, and doctors from regional
Bellville police launch toiletry drive for vulnerable children
MAURICIAPETERSEN
MAURICIA PETERSEN@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA
The Victim Support Unit at Bellville Police Station is calling on the community to come together and support vulnerable children and young adults through a special toiletry donation drive launching this week
The initiative, running from Monday 20 October to 30 November, aims to collect essential toiletries for Hensie Vroom House, a specialised care facility in Stikland that provides a safe and nurturing environment for 25 children and young adults living with severe and profound physical and mental disabilities
"Every toiletry you donate helps restore dignity and comfort to those who need it most, one care item at a time," explains the Victim Support Unit, emphasising how small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals
The campaign is seeking specific items that are essential for daily care:
. Roll-on deodorant;
. Toothpaste;
. Soap;
. Shampoo;
. Body spray and
. Adult diapers (medium and large sizes)
CONVENIENTDROP-OFFLOCATIONS
To make participation easy for the community, three convenient drop-off points have been established:
. Bellville Police Station 8 Voortrekker Road;
. Bellville Public Library Carel van Aswegen Avenue;
. SPAR Old Oak 40 Meerlust Street, Old Oak Centre
The campaign culminates with a handover ceremony on 3 December, strategically timed to coincide with International Day of Persons with Disabilities and as part of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign (25 November to 10 December)
As an added incentive, every donation automatically enters contributors into a Lucky Donor Draw Donors simply need to write their name and contact details on their donation, with the winner to be announced during the handover ceremony on 3 December
COMMUNITYIMPACT
This initiative represents more than just a collection drive it's an opportunity for the Bellville community to demonstrate solidarity with some of its most vulnerable members The Victim Support Unit's involvement highlights the police service's commitment to community empowerment beyond traditional law enforcement duties
HOWYOUCANHELP
Community members are encouraged to visit any of the three drop-off locations between now and 30 November with toiletry donations Whether contributing a single item or multiple products, every donation makes a meaningful difference in ensuring dignity and comfort for the residents of Hensie Vroom House
This campaign exemplifies the spirit of Ubuntu showing that when communities come together, they can create positive change for those who need support most

South Africa’s child protection system is under severe strain, with one of its most pressing needs being a critical shortage of dedicated safety and foster parents This is according to Jacques Voigt, a social worker at Badisa Trio in Kraaifontein.
“Without them, vulnerable children are placed further into an already overwhelmed system, where trauma deepens, processes break down, and hope becomes harder to find,” Voigt told TygerBurger last week
To raise awareness and rally community support, Badisa has organised a vital imbizo on Saturday 8 November, focusing on the life-changing role of safety and foster parents
Voigt says reports of child abuse and neglect remain alarmingly high, while social workers are burdened with caseloads running into the hundreds
“Most child protection offices face numerous challenges, such as limited resources, unsafe working conditions, and staff burnout,” he says
“In the midst of this, the need for a network of safety and foster parents is urgent ”
ALTERNATIVECARE
Safety parents provide temporary care for children removed from harmful environments while investigations are ongoing Foster parents offer longer-term care once a Children’s Court has finalised placement
“Every child needing alternative care should ideally be placed in a family environment,” says Voigt
“But when no biological relatives are available or willing, the lack of unrelated safety or foster families becomes a major issue
“With typically only one or two safety parents per office, children often end up in child and youth care centres that are already at full capacity,” he says
This, he says, pushes children deeper into the system, further from the possibility of family reunification and the chance to grow up in a home environment
Conversely, Voigt emphasises, safety and foster parents can offer children love, stability, and the support they need to begin healing
“Applicants must be screened and trained by a designated social worker and will receive ongoing support Financial assistance is provided through the Department of Social Development via care fees or a foster care grant ”
The imbizo will feature inspiring personal stories from current safety parents and practical guidance on the process of becoming one
Key child protection stakeholders including the police, Badisa, Child Welfare Society, Magdalena House, and the Department of Social Development will present on their services and how the community can support and access them
The event will take place on Saturday 8 November from 10:00 to 12:00 at NG Church Kraaifontein Moedergemeente, 136 Tenth Avenue, Belmont Park . RSVPs and inquiries can be sent to Jacques Voigt at 021 987 2940 or kraaifontein9@ badisatrio org.za by 5 November

Blades and skill unite at this weekend’s Cape Knife Show
With the Cape Knife Show taking place at Tygervalley's Arena this weekend, excitement is already building among collectors and newcomers alike
But beyond the stunning blades on display lies something even more fascinating the craftsmanship and community behind them Knife making is far more than hammering metal on an anvil Each handmade knife represents precision engineering, metallurgy, design, woodworking, heat treatment and finishing all executed by the hands of a single craftsman A maker may spend anything from eight to 50 hours crafting one blade, carefully shaping, hardening, grinding, sharpening and fitting the perfect handle No two knives are ever truly identical
The encouraging news is that it is a craft anyone can learn with the right guidance
This year's Cape Knife Show is not just for buyers - it is for future makers too Alongside more than 45 established knifemakers, there will be suppliers selling steel, handle materials, epoxy resins, leather, belts, abrasives, tools and even machinery Whether you are starting with a file and sandpaper or ready to build a full workshop, you will find everything you need under one roof
FOUNDATIONFORFUTUREMAKERS
For those wanting to delve deeper into the craft, the Cape Knife Club (CKC) provides the perfect foundation Founded in 1991, the club has been active for more than 33 years, during which it has hosted more than 20 successful knife shows demonstrating its long-standing commitment to preserving and promoting the art of knife making in South Africa
Members enjoy monthly gatherings with live demonstrations and technical discussions, access to experienced makers who readily share tips and techniques, a supportive WhatsApp group where questions are answered within minutes, exposure via Facebook, Instagram and www capeknifeclub co za, and friendships forged over fire and steel
"You do not have to be an expert to join," says a senior club member "
From hobbyists working out of garden sheds to world-renowned professionals selling knives for thousands of rands, the Cape Knife Club is a rare community where everyone shares the same passion – and where new members are always welcome
So even if you visit the Cape Knife Show just to browse, do not be surprised if you leave not only with a knife – but with a new hobby, new skills, and a new group of friends
.The Cape Knife Show takes place in the The Arena of the Tygervalley Shopping Centre on Saturday 25 (09:00-17:00) and Sunday 26 (09:00-15:00) October Entry is R50 and includes a lucky draw entry

Bunny crisis in Durbanville
Durbanville has sadly become a known dumping ground for domestic rabbits
In recent weeks, more than 24 abandoned bunnies have had to be rescued sterilised and cared for to prevent further breeding
Why this matters:
.Pet rabbits are domesticated animals, not wild They cannot survive on their own
.Many are run over by cars in neighbourhood streets
. They are easy prey and are attacked or eaten by dogs, cats birds – and even people
.Without care they get sick and die from untreated illnesses
.They suffer in extreme heat or cold, without proper water food and shelter
.Some people view them as pests, leading to them being poisoned or even shot
Dumping a rabbit is not only cruel it creates an end-
less cycle of suffering breeding and more abandoned animals
What you can do instead:
.Adopt don’t shop – and always sterilise your pets
.If you can no longer care for your bunny please contact a rabbit rescue or animal shelter as a last resort
.Rehome responsibly: post on South African bunny groups and rescue networks like Bunny Huggers SA and Bunnies South Africa
Abandoning your pet is not only cruel, it is illegal under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962
Let’s protect our bunnies and stop the cycle of dumping in Durbanville
