TTrio arrested after stolen carrecovered with guns
Three suspectswere arrested on charges of possessing ahijackedvehicle and illegal firearms following aswift police operation in Khayelitsha.
The arrests came after patrol officers were alerted to avehicle hijacking incident in Kraaifontein lastweekend, and successfully intercepted the stolen vehicle at theintersection of 8th Avenue and BrightonRoad.
"Officers on patrol in Khayelitsha were alerted to avehicle hijacking in Kraaifontein," says metro police
spokesperson RuthSolomons.
"Withthe assistance of the tracking company, they wereable to locate the vehicle and force the driver to stop.
"Theoperation saw one suspect attempt to flee the scene on foot, but he was quickly apprehended by officers. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded two illegal firearms.
Thethree suspects, aged 22, 24, and 41, werearrested and detained at Kraaifontein Police Station, pending their court appearance,"she says.

Ward councillor Ronél Viljoen has welcomed the introduction of Capitec Bank's new in-branch Smart ID Service at the Tygervalley branch, which will provide local residents with convenient access to identity document services.
The Ward 70 councillor announced that the Capitec branch in Tygervalley isnow connectedtothe Department of Home Affairs system to assist withidentity documents, including replacing green IDs with SmartIDcards or renewingexisting ID cards

’nSkenking van ses hoogs moderne broeikaste vir vroeggebore babasdeur die Tygerberg-hospitaal se Kindertrust, is verlede week deur diehospitaal se neonatale en pediatriese eenheid verwelkom.
Die skenking is op Donderdag 12 Maart gedoen.
Die DrägerIsolette 8000 Plusbroeikaste kos gesamentlik sowat R1,7 miljoen en is deur private skenkers moontlik gemaak,sê Louise Theron, uitvoerendehoof van dietrust, wat diéskenking behartig het.
Die trustsevoorsitter, prof. Pierre Goussard, het die broeikaste aan prof. Lizelle van Wyk, ’n neonatoloog, oorhandig. Sy het gesê die neonatale eenheid by die hospitaal is dankbaar vir dié skenking.

"Hulle besluit ook waarvoor hulle geld wil gee, dan koop ons dit aan," sê Theron. Sy sê die broeikaste is ’n verbetering van die ou Isolette 2000.
Theron sê die trust, ’n nieregeringsorganisasie, is spesiaal gestig om die hospitaal te help en om hul werk te versterk.
"Ons doen nie net skenkings van toerusting nie; ons ondersteun ook die Tygerberghospitaal se skool met
onderwysers en skenk ander goed aan die hospitaal, soos twee volledige wasserye die afgelope jaar. "Al die geld wat ons vir donasies het, kom van geldinsamelingsprojekte en donateurs," sê Theron. Die trust het ook verlede week ’n splinternuwe brongoskoop ter waarde van sowat R500 000 aan Goussard, hoof van kliniese eenhede: pediatriese pulmonologie en pediatriese intensiewesorg, oorhandig.

These timeless words seem so prescient and ominous in the uncertain times we find ourselves today, in thewakeofthe bloody war in the Middle-East, inflation, the Ukraine invasion, Trump's presidency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modifying and "streamlining" the way we work. Sadly, the skills more people are developing lately are related to howto "perfect" their AI prompts to visualise aconcept instead of struggling to understand photography or learn an instrument and use critical thinking. Idread the long-term effects on our brain processing power after decadesof relying on producing prompts instead of pondering and solving some of the problems ourselves.
It is often said that each generation assumes they are living in the "end times", while the one preceding it feels that today's youth are "doomed, spoilt, entitled" and frying theirbrains with TikTokand Instagram.
Whether it's thebaby boomers emerging from World War 2, millennials witnessing changes in music, movies and computers reshaping our daily lives.
Today we find Gen-Z caught in the throes of social media, political turmoil between the left and theright andsurviving a pandemic that shackled the world to slow down.
However, Ifind Gen-Z's social consciousness and urge to call out injustice when it comes to racismand discrimination so importantand so inspiring when it comes to uniting in the nameoflove, peace and understanding, especially with thefar-rightsoeagerto mock and belittle their voices and stake in the world.
Sadly, some of us lack the curiosity and empathy to imagine what its like growing up in adifferent background, culture, way of eatingand celebrating life. Each of us is swimming in adark, mysterious current that can drown us or inspireusto swim. SmartCape forallages
The City of Cape Town’s information systems and technology department has announced amajor digitalboost to itsalready thriving SmartCape digital access and literacy programmelast week.
SmartCapeprovides residents with free access to computers, internet connectivity and basic digital skillstraining at public librariesand community facilities across the city.
The SmartCapeprogramme was initiated in July 2002 with five computers deployed at six public libraries across the City. Today, more than 550 000 people are registered SmartCape users across the city. Residents can use computers at 101 libraries to browse the internet,create documents such as CVs and improve their typingskills.
COMPUTERSUPGRADED
These SmartCape computers will be upgraded over the next two financial years. The City is also improving public Wi-Fi with faster speeds and tokenless access coming soon, as well as expanded Wi-Fi coverage across more City facilities.
These upgrades will help more residents connect, learn andaccess opportunities in the digital world, said Theresa Uys, the City’s Mayco member for corporate services, last Monday at Durbanville Library to celebrate the success of the SmartCapeprogramme.
According to amediarelease by the City, recent statistics show strong SmartCape usage among the 11 to 13 and 41 to 50 age groups. The programme has also demonstrated its accessibility across generations, withthe oldest participant to date being an 83-year-oldresident who successfully completed the City’s digital literacy training course. The course is offered weekly, in person, at multiple City facilities and aims to equip residents withessential computer skills.

"Every day, residentsuse them to study, search forjobs, accessinformationand connect to opportunities.That is why the rollout ofhigh-speed WiFi andSmartCapeupgrades acrossour facilities is so important.
“The demand forthese services is clear. In the last six months of 2025, our libraries recorded nearly four million visits,welcomed more than 24000 new members,and nowserve more than253 000 residents," said Francine Higham,the City’sMayco memberfor community services andhealth.
