Vir 'n oud-polisievrou (56), wat verlede jaar afgetree het met die hoop om 'n rustige lewe te geniet, was dit tot dusver 'n stink gedoente. Haar desperaatheid vir hulp teen onhigiëniese toestande het lank glo op dowe ore val. Dié inwoner van St. Jamesstraat in Oakdale, Bellville, het die afgelope twee maande met die Stad Kaapstad gesukkel om 'n vlei wat reg agter haar erf is, te kom skoonmaak. Die vlei word na bewering oorgevat deur rondlopers, prostitusie en onwettige storting, wat 'n ernstige gesondheidsrisiko vir kinders en diere inhou. Die stank wat van daar af kom, kan tot in haar huis geruik word. Sy kan nie eens haar agterplaas gebruik nie weens hierdie reuk wat in die lug hang. Dit bring ook allerhande insekte soos kakkerlakke na haar woning. "Die mense kom hier toilet maak, hulle gooi kondome weg, naalde en dwelms – dit is 'n gesondheidsrisiko vir kinders en ons diere," vertel sy. Sy het reeds op 7 November 2023 haar eerste amptelike klagte na die Stad Kaapstad gestuur, maar byna drie maande later sukkel sy steeds om hulle daar te kry. "Ek het al talle kere probeer om hulp te kry. Ek het die Stad gekontak, e-posse gestuur en steeds kry ek net die rond-enbont-stories van verskillende departemente

Emergency medical care, childbirth, and ongoing treatment of chronic conditions continue year-round, however, placing sustained pressure on available blood supplies even as donations decrease. Year-end events, travel plans, and family commitments also disrupt the routines of regular donors, causing many to miss their usual donation schedules and creating a visible gap in collections by January. SANBS is particularly encouraging donors with O and B blood groups who are due for donation to visit centres early in the year. O negative blood serves as the universal type used in emergencies, while Group B contributes significantly to maintaining balanced stocks for specific patient groups. The organisation emphasises, however, that all blood groups are welcome and desperately needed. “We appreciate every South African who donates blood, and we want to start the year by saying thank you,” says Thandi Mosupye, senior manager of marketing, communication and brand at SANBS.

REQUIREMENTS A single blood donation takes only minutes but can potentially save up to three lives by supporting patients in critical need. The process is straightforward, though donors must meet specific health and safety requirements. First-time donors must be between 16 and 75 years old and weigh at least 50 kg, with platelet (thrombocytes) donors requiring a minimum weight of 55kg. Donors should be in good health, lead a low-risk lifestyle, and consider their blood safe for transfusion. They should have eaten within four hours before donating and must not have donated whole blood in the previous 56 days, or platelets and plasma in the last 14 days. “Whether you are an O, A, B or AB donor, your contribution matters, and we welcome you,” Mosupye adds, emphasising that every donation makes a meaningful difference in someone’s life. SANBS invites all eligible donors to make appointments at their nearest donor centre or mobile drive. "Almal verwys jou net na iemand anders. Niemand wil verantwoordelikheid aanvaar nie." Drie maande later voel die inwoner toenemend desperaat. "Ek het

Terwyl die Stad beweer dat geen gesondheidsrisiko's gevind is nie, ervaar inwoners daagliks kondome, naalde en menslike afval. "Dit is nie net my probleem nie – dit raak die hele gemeenskap se lewensgehalte," beklemtoon die inwoner. Die onlangse skoonmaak mag 'n stap vooruit wees, maar dit kom ná maande van frustrasie en getuig van reaktiewe eerder as proaktiewe bestuur.

Illegal gin plant bust in Durbanville A

major illegal alcohol manufacturing operation has been shut down in Durbanville recently after metro police discovered more than 2 000 litres of homemade gin being produced at a property in Zebra Street. Five suspects, aged between 18 and 39, have been arrested in connection with the operation, which involved counterfeiting popular alcohol brands and potentially putting public health at serious risk. The bust happened on Monday 5 January after concerned residents reported suspicious activity to the Public Emergency Call Centre (PECC). Metro Police Neighbourhood Safety Officers responded to the tip-off and gained permission to search the property. What they found shocked investigators: 11 large drums filled with homemade gin, a machine used to distill alcohol, and bottles of two popular alcohol brands being filled and packaged with the counterfeit liquor to imitate legitimate products. The operation was clearly designed to fool consumers into believing they were buying genuine branded alcohol, when in fact they were purchasing potentially dangerous homemade spirits. MULTIPLE ARRESTS MADE Three men and two women were arrested at the scene and face charges of illegal manufacturing of alcohol, contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act, and possession of presumed stolen property. The homeowner, identified as a Chinese national, was arrested at a later stage. All suspects appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court. The scene has been handed over to Durbanville police for further investigation, while the confiscated liquor has been sent for forensic analysis.

Police warn of sophisticated telephone scam Con artists are using the Provincial Commissioner's office number for fraud. The police has issued an urgent warning about a sophisticated telephone scam using the cloned number of the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner. According to Col André Traut, provincial police media spokesperson, the fraudsters call from 021 417 7148 to impersonate police officers and trick people into paying large sums of money to avoid arrest or prosecution. HOW THE SCAM WORKS The scammers contact victims, sometimes appearing in police uniform during video calls, and claim that the person is linked to a parcel allegedly containing contraband. Using intimidation tactics, they coerce victims into making payments to avoid legal consequences. The criminals employ caller ID spoofing technology to make their calls appear legitimate. Similar scams have been reported across South Africa. Traut emphasised that legitimate police officials will never demand money in exchange for avoiding arrest or prosecution, and payments will never be requested via telephone or video calls. If contacted by someone claiming to be from law enforcement, citizens should: Never make payments via telephone or video call. Verify the caller's identity through official channels. Report any suspected scam immediately. Remember that police will never demand money to avoid prosecution. Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by this scam should report it to their nearest police station or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Durbanville police have opened a comprehensive investigation into the operation, with detectives working to determine the full extent of the illegal manufacturing network and how long it had been operating. The authorities are particularly concerned about the sophisticated nature of the counterfeiting operation, which involved replicating the packaging and branding of legitimate alcohol products. Die klub het onlangs donasies oorhandig aan die Alpha-tehuis in Boston en Huis Ravenzicht in Kraaifontein. Huis Ravenzicht is een van Helpende Hand Durbanville-tak se projekte, en die skenking is in samewerking met hierdie organisasie gemaak. "Ek doen geweldig baie werk vir Helpende Hand en het gevoel die groenteskenking sal 'n groot bydrae maak in baie bejaardes se harte," vertel Lorinda Smit, wat die tuin gestig het. Die klub het groot planne vir 2026. Saam met Helpende Hand en AfriForum sal hy as deel van sy gemeenskapsprojekte 'n groentetuin by die Alta du Toitnasorgsentrum in Boston tot stand bring. Hierdie inisiatief het ten doel om die tehuis selfonderhoudend met groente te maak en ook 'n bron van inkomste te skep. Die Alpha-tehuis, wat slegs twee blokke van DF se groentetuine geleë is, het reeds belangstelling getoon. Volgens Smit lees inwoners van die tehuis graag oor die klub se aktiwiteite en wil nou graag groente direk van die skool af aankoop. Bellville Library will remain closed for an additional week as repairs following December's cable theft is taking longer than initially expected. The City's Library and Information Services announced that the facility, which was scheduled to reopen Monday (12 January), will only open on 19 January due to unforeseen delays in the repair process. The library has been closed since 29 December after cable thieves struck leaving it without electricity. While City technicians have been working steadily to replace the stolen electrical infrastructure, the extent of the damage and complexity of the repairs has proven more challenging than initially anticipated.

“The work to repair stolen cables is ongoing, and the Bellville Library is therefore unable to reopen just yet,” the City stated in its latest update. During the extended closure, residents are encouraged to continue using their nearest alternative library facilities including: Tygervalley Library Brackenfell Library Kraaifontein Library Durbanville Library Parow Library “The City apologises for any inconvenience this extended closure may cause and thanks residents for their patience and understanding,” officials stated.

UWC develops nano health sensor

niversity of the Western Cape researchers have achieved a major breakthrough in medical diagnostics, developing an innovative electrochemical sensor capable of detecting cancer, tuberculosis, and long COVID-19 at a fraction of traditional testing costs. The cutting-edge sensor, developed at UWC's SensorLab in the Department of Chemistry, represents a significant leap forward in addressing South Africa's dual burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases. This portable device uses nanotechnology to detect specific disease biomarkers in blood samples, offering rapid and highly sensitive results that could transform healthcare delivery in underserved communities. Dr Jaymi Leigh January, the lead researcher and recent PhD graduate who spearheaded this development, emphasised the technology's relevance to local health challenges. “This research addresses a very real South African health challenge by providing accessible, sensitive, and affordable disease diagnostics,” she explained. HOW THE TECHNOLOGY WORKS The innovative sensor operates using light-based electrical signals to measure trace amounts of disease-linked proteins in patient blood samples. Its remarkable sensitivity allows detection of COVID-19 spike proteins at levels as low as 0.04 picograms per millilitre — far exceeding the capabilities of many current diagnostic tools. The device identifies specific biomarkers for each condition: CapG proteins for cancer detection, interferon gamma for tuberculosis screening, and spike proteins

BREAKTHROUGH WILL HELP BRIDGE GAP IN HEALTHCARE EQUITY for identifying COVID-19 infections and long COVID-19 risk. Unlike traditional laboratory-based diagnostics that require expensive infrastructure, this sensor delivers fast, reliable results in a portable format. South Africa faces significant challenges with tuberculosis, cancer, and ongoing COVID-19 complications. Traditional diagnostic methods often require costly laboratory facilities and lengthy processing times, creating barriers to early detection and treatment, particularly in resource-limited settings. This breakthrough technology offers a game-changing solution by providing immediate, accurate results at the point of care. The sensor's ability to detect diseases at earlier stages could dramatically improve treatment outcomes and patient survival rates. For long COVID-19 detection, the technology proves particularly valuable in identifying hidden viral reservoirs and patients at risk of developing prolonged symptoms — a growing concern as the pandemic's long-term effects become clearer. The project represents successful international collaboration, with January working under the supervision of Prof Emmanuel Iwuoha from UWC's Chemistry Department, alongside Dr Nelia Sanga, a UWC postdoctoral fellow. The team also partnered with researchers from the University of Ghent in Belgium, including Prof Jan Gettemans and associate researcher Olivier Zwaenepoel.

This collaborative approach has been instrumental in developing a sensor that demonstrates excellent stability, reliability, and reproducibility – essential features for routine clinical application. The technology's most significant advantage lies in its potential to improve healthcare equity. By providing affordable, portable diagnostics, the sensor could bridge the gap between advanced medical facilities and underserved communities across South Africa and beyond. January reflected on the broader implications of her research: “Every challenge during this journey has been a formative moment that strengthened me, and I'm grateful for the guidance of

supervisors, family, and co-researchers.” LOOKING AHEAD The research team now focuses on scaling up development and production for widespread clinical use. Future plans include comprehensive clinical trials to further validate the device's effectiveness and expand accessibility in resourceconstrained healthcare systems globally. new resident from Oakdale fears for his family safety as criminals use a tree outside in the street to access his property for criminal activities. Sayed Adonis has turned to the City of Cape Town for help after criminals began using a tree outside his property to gain access to his home, forcing him and his family to live in fear. Adonis, who moved to what he believed would be a “safe haven” for his retirement years, now finds himself installing expensive CCTV cameras and worrying about violent confrontations as intruders exploit the tree positioned against his vibracrete wall. “I brought my family from Mitchells Plain to come live out here and thinking that it's a safe haven.” “The tree is right against my wall and criminals are using it to climb over and get onto my property,” said Adonis. “We thought we were moving somewhere safe, but now I fear for my family’s safety.” The desperate pensioner has provided video evidence showing exactly how the tree can be used as a criminal access point, with footage captured on 1 December 2025 demonstrating the security vulnerability. The ongoing security threat has placed an unexpected financial strain on Adonis, who has been forced to invest in surveillance equipment despite his limited pensioner’s income.

ELDERLY FORCED TO SPEND PENSION ON SECURITY

“I shouldn’t have to spend my pension money on security cameras because the City won’t deal with a tree that’s helping criminals break into my home,” he said. "All I wanted is for the City or Parks and Forest to come to my premises and assess the situation and advise,” he explained. CITY RESPONDS The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has acknowledged Adonis’s concerns and made contact to address the situation. “The tree removal request has been referred to an arboriculturist who needs to complete an assessment of the situation,” Francine Higham, Mayco member for community services and health, confirmed. “Following the assessment, the complainant will receive a detailed update.” “Tree removals are governed by relevant by-laws and national legislation,” the Higham stated, indicating that proper procedures must be followed before action can be taken. Whilst the City has not provided a specific timeline for resolution, officials have committed to expediting the arboriculturist’s assessment and maintaining regular communication with Adonis throughout the process. Meanwhile, Adonis will have to deal with this situation which is very concerning to him.

Birthdate surprises For an explicable reason, all of my seven daughters’ birthdays are clustered around or on special days. Between 1 December and 2 January our family celebrated five birthdays. Suffice to say, I am all festived out. We will have a few months break from birthdays before we celebrate my two non-Christmas season babies' birthdays — around Easter. A lot of people think I’m lying when I tell them about how weirdly clustered my children’s birth dates are, but most of their birthdays are truly on, or very close to, significant calendar days, such as a week before Christmas (daughter number two) and then 10 years later daughter number six was born on Aids Day (1 December). That’s two in December. Daughters one and five were both the second babies to be born on New Year’s Day at Mitchells Plain hospitals — 10 years apart — and both got prizes for their luckily-timed arrivals. And then, not to be outdone, daughter number four was born on 2 January, locally known as Tweede Nuwejaar — though this year the minstrel festival traditionally celebrated on that day was held later and on a different route, much to the annoyance of the participants. So, if you are not managing to keep track, that’s another three birthdays over two days a week after Christmas. Daughter number three was born on April Fools’ Day — after I went into false labour multiple times in the month before she was born (she pranked me even before birth).

MY CHILDREN NEVER SHOWED UP WHEN THEY WERE EXPECTED TO...

Her birthday usually coincides with the Easter period and the year she turned five, she unwrapped her birthday present and Easter chocolates on the same day. It's much less fun for her when her birthday falls mid-Lent. My seventh daughter was born five minutes before Workers’ Day on 30 April, 10 years and one month after her April Fool sister. I think she did it just to thwart her daddy’s planned witticisms because, as my labour approached midnight, he was already practicing saying: “May the first, be the last”. So, to recap; all my babies born in the same months (December, January and April) did so 10 years apart — and yes, all of my children were born naturally. And, just to freak you out more, here’s another weirdness — none of them, were born on their expected due dates. Not even the two that were induced due to my gestational diabetes. They were all either early (daughter number two) or late (all the others). This may be due to their size because they were also bigger than normal due to gestational diabetes. My smallest baby was daughter number six, who weighed a puny 3,8kg at birth. Their size confused the scans so they were projected to be older than they actually were in utero and therefore their estimated due dates changed with every doctor’s visit — and none of them were correct. The calendar-calculated due dates were also off because it has a built-in two week margin of error. My point is, my children never showed up when they were expected to, even the last two who were induced because they wouldn’t budge after the first induction attempts and hung around a day longer. Stubborn little buggers. But what is the point of all this, you might be wondering. Well, I'm not complaining or harking after ended festivities. To me, this time of year is an annual reminder that God does indeed have a very quirky sense of humour. - LAUREN O'CONNOR-MAY

WARRINGTON SWIMS FOR SPCA: Guinness World Record holder Howard Warrington’s epic seven-hour battle against False Bay’s unforgiving waters has netted nearly R65 000 towards the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s animal sterilisation programme in December last year. Despite enduring jellyﬁsh stings and battling challenging onditions for seven hours, covering more than 22 km, Warrington fell short of reaching Rooi Els. However, his efforts proved that sometimes the journey matters more than the destination. The fundraising success adds to Warrington’s impressive track record of using his athletic achievements to support animal welfare. “Howard Warrington plunged into False Bay at Millers Point this morning, with extraordinary courage,” said Belinda Abraham, for the SPCA. “He didn’t reach the Royal shore, but he did reach an entire community in need instead.”

City boom brings infrastructure challenges A recent opinion piece praises Cape Town for being a better run municipality experiencing a strong property boom, but raises concern about infrastructure to cope with accelerating development, particularly around traffic congestion in the CBD and Atlantic Seaboard areas. Residents can however be assured that the City will continue making the necessary infrastructure investments and is currently refining the mobility plans to back this. In the short-term, an independent traffic engineering assessment is under way on tactical interventions to address event-related congestion in the CBD and Seaboard areas. Overarching strategies to assist with traffic flow in central Cape Town have also undergone two rounds of public participation this year, first with the draft CBD Local Spatial Development Framework, and in November, with the draft Mobility and Access Plan for the Cape Town CBD. This is a plan to transition to a CBD where access is easy and convenient, sustainable transport options are within short walking distance for all, the city feels safe and inclusive, and people of all abilities are provided for. The main ideas include improving walkability in the heart of the CBD and around public transport stations; promoting walking and cycling within the CBD by creating a decongestion zone; diverting through-traffic onto bypass roads; and better use of off-street parking methods. Granted, it will take time to implement and achieve

these outcomes, but this is a workable alternative as we head into the future. It is also a given that improved public transport is critical to the future success of the CBD and Seaboard. Thankfully, the building blocks for this are coming into place. A large portion of the current commuter volumes already arrive in the CBD via public transport, mostly around the Cape Town Station area, either by minibus-taxi, GABS buses, rail, and MyCiTi, which serves the CBD via the northern corridor along Table Bay, the N2 Express to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, and Victoria Road to Hout Bay and Imizamo Yethu. The progressive restoration of passenger rail, its future devolution for the City to take over operational control, and the ongoing expansion of the MyCiTi system — including the over multi-billion rand metro south-east route development — will increase access to scheduled public transport and make it the ﬁrst choice for traveling to the CBD. Likewise, major City investments on the Seaboard over the years — including the Sea Point Promenade and Green Point Urban Park — remain an excellent foundation for the future. There is also no false choice between redeveloping public land and channelling infrastructure investment into central Cape Town. Land release does precisely that: it rejuvenates precincts with private-sector led mixed-use developments that bring in critical revenue for the city, alongside all the economic beneﬁts and residential opportunities.

Halting state land release and planning approvals more generally, as the recent opinion piece implies, would only entrench the problem of high demand for limited housing supply which Cape Town experiences, like other thriving cities globally. As Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis notes, there are only two options: reduce demand — and with it the beneﬁts of economic progress and growth — or increase supply by building more housing. This is why the City is working on making it much easier to build more affordable housing, with Cape Town leading the way nationally on several initiatives. The City is already systematically identifying these violations of the existing rates policy and working on mechanisms to further improve compliance. Looking at the big picture, Cape Town has a South African record R40 billion infrastructure budget over the next three years, and a R120 billion ten-year pipeline. Whatever your income level, or wherever you live, Capetonians can be assured that Cape Town — as South Africa’s city of hope — is poised to keep making progress towards being an even better place to live in future, underpinned by transparent planning, record infrastructure investment, and clear long-term mobility strategies. Cape Town’s approach is neither fanciful nor reckless — it is a pragmatic, data-driven blueprint to manage growth, expand opportunity, and build a more inclusive, connected and resilient city for decades to come. Water shortages hit Cape Town as illegal settlements grow Our energetic mayor is showcasing a project to extract millions of litres of water from the Philippi aquifer — a major water project underway in the DA-led Cape Town. This in an attempt to "feed" the masses with water whilst the Rietvlei lagoon in Milnerton is a sewerage cesspool and thousands of new arrivals from the Eastern Cape are building illegal structures under Eskom’s high-voltage lines in Dunoon. We, the ratepayers, are constantly advised to reduce our water consumption and then slapped with a “basic charge" when we adhere to this call — from water to electricity to “street cleaning”. The disgraced ANC member Ebrahim Rasool, also the erstwhile premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008, famously made the iconic statement that "Cape Town is a home for all". Well in 2025 ALL have arrived and now Cape Town

has a major water shortage. Ditto for Overstrand Municipality when the Onrust lagoon has dried up, but the council keeps on approving new developments. Currently Tehran, the capital of Iran (our good friends), with an estimated population of 15 million, has run out of water as I write. Visit the link: Iran's largest water line is gone — Tehran faces mass evacuation as 15 million people without water. Since 2001, due to catastrophically bad policy decisions by the Iranian regime, Lake Umeria is dying and Tehran’s main water supply has dried up. On top of this Tehran’s population has jumped from 4 to 15 million due to unemployment and devastation of the agricultural sector in the north of the country. They have also built numerous dams in the rivers that feed into Lake Umeria, which has changed the lake into a salt bowl.

Tehran, the city, is now paying the price for these irresponsible policies and are now going to buy water from it’s neighbours and cannot feed its population. And how is Cape Town different from this apocalyptical scenario? When will this madness stop? The unbridled population growth of Cape Town, the densiﬁcation of neighbourhoods and the deforestation of the environment of which the Butler property is just another example. The current dust bowl on Bolandweg reminds one of the American Midwest dust bowl of the 1930’s. Where are our scientists in this scenario? I have concluded that our municipal officials actually do not understand what their functions are and are willingly compliant to the popular policies of the political leaders. FRANCOIS J. Mini traffic circles need better signage and awareness The growing concern remains regarding motorists’ misunderstanding of the rules governing mini traffic circles. Despite clear signage, many drivers fail to apply the fundamental principle: “First at the yield line, ﬁrst to proceed.” This simple rule ensures smooth traffic ﬂow and

reduces accidents, yet non-compliance remains common with nobody apparently with any understanding of how the circle works. Maybe the following could be considered to improve the current situation: Additional yield signs and road markings could be added at mini circles.

here is a saying among writers: your first book teaches you about writing, your second book teaches you about publishing. For author Craig Jaftha, from Rondevlei Park, Mitchells Plain this lesson came all in one package. He wrote and recently published a fantasy novel with Christian themes, The Cynewards and the Serpent Trials, through Blue Weaver. The book is a supernatural tale that weaves mythology, magical realism and personal experience. Jaftha said the process was an eye opener in terms of publishing, adding the process was mostly positive. “I decided to go with assisted publishing because I was still new at writing, and particularly this calibre of project, and I wanted to put the best possible final product out.” Jaftha said from now on he would probably try the traditional publishing route instead. “Hard as it may be I would love to try traditional publishing. I’ve seen the additional work that goes into making one’s book a success after it’s been

FIRST BOOK TEACHES WRITING, SECOND PUBLISHING published, and I now have a deeper respect for the process. “What one doesn’t find out until after the book is published that the hard part has just begun. Launching promotions campaigns, advertising, finding the right distributors, social-media obligations and just plain building an online presence, definitely a lot of work one has to juggle with a full-time job.” PUBLISHING STREAMS Helen Holyoke, who does niche public relations for authors, publishers and book sellers said each publishing stream has its own pros and cons. With decades of publishing experience under her belt, she advised that authors do thorough research before choosing which stream to pursue. “One of the biggest pitfalls for independent authors is signing with a publisher offering ‘packaged’ publishing contracts that do not include essential professional services, such as proper editing, production and printing. A potentially strong book can be undermined by inadequate editing, which is detrimental to the author’s credibility and can be costly, often with little return on investment. TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING Children’s author Makhosi Dewette Dludla, who recently published her fourth book, said landing a traditional publishing contract can be a lot of hard work. “At first I didn’t know much about publishing, so the journey involved a lot of trial and error. “I rewrote my work many times, asked for feedback and faced many rejections along the way. “ It seemed as if I had sent my first manuscript to every publisher in South Africa,” Dludla said. “My first book was published by Ndalo Publishers, but unfortunately the company later went into liquidation. Despite that setback, I kept going, and eventually my second publication lined up. Seeing my work published with Penguin Random House South Africa made all the challenges worthwhile.” Dludla’s most recent book, My Unicorn Speaks Zulu, was published earlier last year. PUBLISHING OVERSEAS For Goodwood fantasy and romance author Shameez Patel, the traditional publisher route looked different and came with other challenges. “My publishing journey has had many ups and downs,” she said, “and I am deeply aware of how this is only the beginning. I’ve come to understand that publishing success, whatever your version of success, is a marathon and not a

sprint.” Patel has published five books, a fantasy series, The Selene Trilogy, and two interlinked romance novels, the most recent of which, Next Level Love, has just hit the South African shelves. She had eventually got her books on the shelves by applying to publishers overseas. ADVICE FOR AUTHORS Despite their varying publishing routes all the authors agreed publishing is hard work and not lucrative, unless one is JK Rowling. “The journey to publication can take

time, and there will be moments of rejection or self-doubt, but persistence is key,” Dludla said. “It’s also important to understand that being published doesn’t mean your work will automatically sell itself. As an author one plays a big role in marketing one’s book, and without that effort there may be little or no royalties.” Regarding the hard work publishing entails Jaftha said: “There will be days when one’s ideas run wild and days when they conflict with the plot, but seeing your completed work and hearing people’s honest thoughts are some of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever experienced.”

mergency crews battled a fast-moving fire that tore through Site 5 in Dunoon on Friday 9 January, after multiple informal structures caught alight shortly after 10:25. The blaze spread rapidly through the densely built settlement, driven by strong southeasterly winds and a heavy fuel load. According to City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the first arriving officer immediately requested additional resources due to the scale and intensity of the fire. A total of 12 fire engines and water tankers were deployed, with operations coordinated by an Incident Management Team (IMT) Type 4. “The strong winds and fuel load are presenting a challenge to firefighting efforts,” Carelse said, adding that conditions remained volatile throughout the day. Potsdam Road was closed to traffic as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, with the Table View Neighbourhood Watch urging residents and motorists to remain alert and allow unhindered access for emergency vehicles. FIREFIGHTERS ASSAULTED AMID EXTREME CONDITIONS As crews battled the inferno, public order policing resources were called in after firefighters were assaulted while attempting to contain the blaze. One firefighter was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment for heat exhaustion. Carelse said the dense layout of the informal settlement severely hampered

City Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the structural conditions in Site 5 made direct firefighting extremely difficult. “The dense structural layout has made it nearly impossible for appliances to access a rapidly growing fire line,” Smith said. “Materials used in informal structures allow fires to spread quickly and make them extremely difficult to extinguish once fully engulfed.” Despite this, crews implemented innovative tactics, including the use of an aerial appliance as a water tower, dronebased thermal imaging to guide water streams, and helicopter water drops. “Our top priority is protecting lives and property. We plead with communities to support firefighters and comply with instructions during these difficult moments,” Smith said. The fire was eventually brought under control and extinguished at around 19:00. Amid the emergency, an urgent appeal was issued by Little Brinks, a safe house supporting abused and abandoned children and vulnerable mothers, after two of its homes were threatened by the advancing flames. Shan Hoffman of Little Brinks said women and children were placed in immediate danger, particularly two ill mothers unable to endure heavy smoke and ash exposure. The organisation appealed for urgent financial assistance

RELIEF EFFORTS BEGIN AS SCALE OF DEVASTATION EMERGES The City's Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) established an on-site Joint Operations Centre to coordinate recovery efforts. DRMC spokesperson Charlotte Powell said officials were awaiting the all-clear before conducting a formal assessment of damage and displacement. Other City services, along with Sassa, the provincial department of social development and the national department of human settlements, were placed on standby, while humanitarian partners were activated to provide immediate relief. A donation drive has been launched, with drop-off points at the following fire stations, open 24 hours: Goodwood, Roeland Street, Lakeside, Constantia, Hout Bay, Strand, Wynberg and Milnerton. Donations of non-perishable food, hygiene items, nappies, baby formula, blankets and bedding are requested. fire, bravely fought by our firefighters under extremely challenging conditions,” Hill-Lewis said. “City teams are working urgently to assist every affected household.” Pophaim renewed calls for national government to urgently release reconstruction kits, stressing the need for faster intervention in high-density informal settlements. THOUSANDS DISPLACED AS FIRE SEASON INTENSIFIES Approximately 5 500 people have been left homeless after more than 1 000 dwellings were destroyed — an incident Gift of the Givers believes to be the worst informal settlement fire in the Western Cape since the 2013 Khayelitsha blaze. Gift of the Givers was on the ground providing immediate humanitarian assistance as recovery efforts began. With dry conditions, high temperatures and strong winds forecast to persist, authorities continue to urge residents nationwide to remain vigilant, avoid open flames and heed all fire safety warnings as the peak fire season continues.

Fire season costs soar to R15m The Western Cape has already spent R15 million on aerial firefighting support as large parts of the province continue to battle intense and fast-moving wildfires. Authorities warn that the fire season could extend beyond March. MEC for local government, environmental affairs and development planning, Anton Bredell, met with senior officials last week for briefings on the mounting challenges municipalities are facing as the holiday season ends, while hot and dry summer conditions persist. “The Western Cape has experienced a particularly challenging fire season so far, with double the number of aerial firefighting support call-outs authorised compared to this time last year,” said Bredell. “The South African Weather Service has indicated that the remainder of the summer will remain hot and dry, which could extend the fire season beyond March. To date, R15 million has already been spent, and we will engage with the Provincial Treasury should additional funding be required.” According to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, 38 aerial firefighting missions have been authorised so far this

season. Preliminary figures indicate that approximately 90 000 hectares have already burned across the province. A total of 45 structures have been destroyed, however no fatalities or serious disabling injuries have been reported. In Mossel Bay, residents in Island View, Vakansieplaas and Aalwyndal were evacuated last Tuesday after a veld fire encroached on urban areas, resulting in property damage. Fire crews remain fully deployed in these areas, with aerial support redeployed and additional water resources brought in as wind conditions continue to be closely monitored. Firefighters battled multiple fires in the Overberg and Garden Route districts. As of Monday 12 January, three major fires were burning in Stanford, Pearly Beach and Greyton. The Pearly Beach fire has spread as far as the Stanford wineries. Overberg District Municipality Fire Chief Reinard Geldenhuys said strong winds remain a major concern. “The Greyton fire was contained, but with strong westerly winds it jumped the road toward Riviersonderend and is now burning in the mountain. There is also a small fire near Villiersdorp that crews are

monitoring,” he said. Garden Route District firefighters battled wildfires in Mossel Bay and Tsitsikamma. The N2 between Dana Bay and Langeberg Mall was temporarily closed in both directions due to heavy smoke and poor visibility, but reopened just after 05:00 on Wednesday. Fire crews from Mossel Bay, Garden Route, Hessequa and George municipalities, supported by multiple water trucks and private volunteers, were deployed. CAPE WINELANDS AND EASTERN CAPE FIRES CONTINUE The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) confirmed that a fire reported late on Wednesday in Languedoc, Stellenbosch, has been contained, with no property damage reported. Ground teams remain on site for monitoring and mop-up operations. However, the situation remained critical in Langrug, Franschhoek, over the weekend. Strong north-westerly winds have pushed the blaze in the direction of Franschhoek town. Two contracted ground teams and a 34-member CapeNature crew were involved in suppression efforts. The N2 between Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay were closed, with all traffic diverted via the R102. An urgent evacuation notice has been issued for residents in the Zwartenbosch area, Oyster Bay Road farming areas, as well as Kromme River and Riverside. Temporary accommodation has been arranged, and residents have been urged to follow instructions from emergency services. One Pearly Beach resident last week described conditions as rapidly deteriorating due to wind, with roads frequently closed because of poor visibility. The Overstrand Municipality declared the situation a "Code Red". Fire crews remain on high alert across the Western Cape as hot, dry and windy conditions continue to fuel an already severe fire season.

As jy nie in die omgewing woon nie, kan jy een van die kamers in die boetiekhotel op Meerendal bespreek of in een van die gastehuise in Durbanville bly. Bespreek plek in die hotel op Meerendal by dieselfde skakel waar jy inskryf. Maar jy moet spring, daar is net 'n handvol kamers beskikbaar. Die staptogte is alles op gruis- en grondpaaie – nooit teer nie. Die 21 kmroete loop oor Dorstberg ('n stywe bult op los klippe) en gewone tekkies gaan nie die mas opkom nie. AFSTANDE BY DIE STAPFEES Vrydag 20 Februarie: 'n 6 km-stap om 18:00 (geskik vir die hele gesin). Saterdag 21 Februarie: Kies of jy aan die 6 km-, 12 km- of 21 km-stap wil deelneem. Die verskillende pret-stappe spring op verskillende tye weg, maar almal is vroegoggend. Sondag 16 Februarie: 10 km-stap om 07:00.
