Hawks arrest City officer

he multi-disciplinary intelligence-led operation comprising the Hawks, the provincial Anti-kidnapping Unit along with provincial Organised Crime resulted in the arrest of a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officer on Monday 9 June on charges of kidnapping, extortion and murder. The arrest of the 43-year-old man occurred after an alleged kidnapping in Kraaifontein on 16 May. "The victim was last seen by a friend leaving for Bellville to view a vehicle he intended to purchase and never came back, following which the friend reported him missing," Lt-Col Siyabulela Vukubi, spokesperson for the Hawks. "Another friend of the victim received a call from him saying he had been kidnapped and was being assaulted." A ransom of R100 000 for the victim’s release was demanded by the kidnappers, but was subsequently reduced to R10 000. "The suspects provided a bank account the money should be deposited into," Vukubi said. "It was alleged an amount of R5 000 was deposited into the account and the suspects continued to demand the balance." On 17 May the Hawks team followed all the leads that led them to addresses in Philippi and Kleinvlei, resulting in the arrest of four men, Mogamat Samuels (33), Thokozani Kamnjunga (36), Existing Mudivari (33) and Yasseen Jele (30), who have already made a court appearance. The team was led to an open field on the dunes between Monwabisi Beach and Macassar, where one of the accused pointed out a shallow grave where the victim was killed and buried. "On further investigation it transpired that a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement vehicle, driven by the suspect mentioned above, was used in the commission of this heinous crime," Vukubi pointed out.

The provincial head of the Hawks, Maj-Gen Mathipa Makgato, said the unit remains committed to rooting any form of criminality within the ranks of the lawenforcement agencies out, people on the wrong side of the law who reflect badly on the agencies. CITY ASSISTS WITH INVESTIGATION Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for City Law Enforcement, confirmed the arrest. "The officer who is stationed at the AntiLand Invasion Unit was arrested amid an investigation by our Safety and Security Information Management Systems Unit in collaboration with the Hawks in connection with the crime in May. "Approached for assistance, our teams worked diligently to aid the Hawks investigation. We will continue to cooperate with the police to ensure a swift conclusion to the investigation and prosecution. “While the arrest of the officer is disappointing, the Safety and Security Directorate is committed to rooting corrupt and criminal elements out, and will not hesitate to investigate and take the required action when wrongdoing is uncovered. This matter is also being dealt with in terms of City policies and procedures, and a disciplinary process is underway."

In a coordinated operation on Friday 30 May, the police's Hawks based in Bellville and George, in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs' Immigration Services and A21, a non-governmental organisation fighting human trafficking, arrested two suspects aged 31 and 34 for trafficking in people. The arrests followed the execution of a search warrant prompted by intelligence, indicating a possible human-trafficking victim being held against her will at a guest house in Goodwood and forced into sex work. During their search officers discovered four women who confirmed they were sex workers. Additionally, five other adults and three small children were also found on the premises. Further investigation established one of the women there as being a victim of trafficking. The two managers were immediately arrested. The victim received medical attention at a health-care facility before being transferred to a safe house. The suspects appeared in the Goodwood Magistrates' Court on Monday 2 June, facing charges related to human trafficking.

Early hearing tests can change lives E

ach year in South Africa, many newborns go untested for hearing loss. The Carel du Toit Centre, located on the grounds of the Tygerberg Hospital in Parow, is working to change this with screening initiatives already making a difference at this hospital. In a statement issued recently, the centre said newborn hearing screening can change the life of a deaf baby. It said babies born deaf can learn to listen and talk just like typically hearing children, if their hearing loss is diagnosed and treated early. This starts with a simple, quick and safe hearing test done shortly after birth, called a newborn hearing screening, the centre said. The centre said testing early matters. HEARING TESTS In South Africa, newborn hearing tests are not routinely carried out at all hospitals and maternity units. However, the Carel du Toit Trust who is the fundraising arm of Carel du Toit Centre where children who are deaf learn to listen and speak, has two dedicated staff members at Tygerberg Hospital who perform these screenings with plans to expand the team, it said. It is important for all parentsto-be to know that your baby’s hearing should be tested soon after birth and if your baby does not pass the test, they should be

Early detection means early help, giving your child the best chance to develop speech and language skills. One of the babies who was fortunate enough to undergo screening, is Bunono Qutwa from Site C, Khayelitsha. Bunono was born very early in August 2023, weighing just 1,1 kg, and stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit until December. Thankfully, he was born at Tygerberg Hospital, where his hearing was tested. At one month old (corrected for prematurity), Bunono did not pass his first hearing test. A follow-up test confirmed he had profound hearing loss in both ears. He received hearing aids at five months old, but because his hearing loss was so severe, the aids were not enough. To help him learn to speak - his family’s biggest hope - Bunono now needed cochlear implants, the centre explained. The school proudly hosted an electrifying netball tournament featuring 24 teams and over 250 passionate young athletes from local primary schools—Bellville Primary, De Tyger Primary, Excelsior Primary, and Labiance Primary. Each player took to the court not only driven by a love for the game but also by the camaraderie and support of their communities. Several students have already been placed in practical internships, gaining on-the-job experience at construction sites.

Cleaning things up With regard to waste reduction, the initiative has already recycled 181 437 kg of waste with the help of 75 businesses, engaged 26 380 learners and 1 884 teachers in the Zero Waste Schools project, prevented 38 610 kg of CO2 emissions, and composted organic waste for 13 gardens. Community digs in to restore fynbos I

n honour of World Environment Day, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted a community-led environmental activation at Jack Muller Park in Bellville last week. It highlighted the importance of biodiversity and ecological restoration, featuring the planting of rare indigenous fynbos species and seed sowing activities. The planting effort focused on the Kraaifontein Spiderhead (Serruria furcellata), a rare Protea species, as part of a broader fynbos rehabilitation initiative. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi) has donated 30 rare protea plants to the City for planting in this area. Over the past two years stakeholders have worked together to clear invasive kikuyu grass and collect more than 20 indigenous seed species in preparation for all the activity at the day’s event. This was made possible through a long-standing collaboration between Recreation and Parks and passionate local environmental groups, including the Friends of Jack Muller Park and the Jack Muller Hack Group. Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad are coming to Cape Town this winter school holidays. For the first time ever, the hit theatre production Bluey’s Big Play makes its African debut at Artscape on Thursday 26 June, running until Sunday 6 July. In this theatrical adaptation of the Bafta and Emmy-winning animated children’s television series, families can see Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad in their first ever theatre show, featuring brilliantly created puppets and sets, live actors and all-new music. The play follows Bluey and her family through a full day from sunrise to bedtime. When Dad feels like a little bit of Sunday afternoon time out, Bluey and Bingo have other plans. Join them as they pull out all of the games and cleverness at their disposal to get Dad off that bean bag. "During my years in practice, I've come to understand that divorce is not simply a legal ending. It is a relational rupture that leaves lasting imprints - not just on the separating couple, but on the child, the extended family and even the community around them. It reaches into the classroom, the clinic, the court and even the workplace. And when not handled with care, it can affect the next generation too," she said. According to the latest divorce statistics in South Africa, between 2021 and 2022 there was a 10,9% increase in the number of divorces, rising to 20 196 divorce

orders, according to Bredekamp. "This represents a notable upward shift pointing to the ongoing fragility of marital unions in our country. A significant gender disparity was observed in divorce initiation - 55,8% of divorces were filed by women, while 32,2% were initiated by men. Among the population groups, women of colour had the highest proportion of female plaintiffs, standing at 63,2. In terms of age, the median age at divorce was 46 years for men and 42 years for women. The peak age range for divorce across all population groups was 35 to 49 years for men and 35 to 39 years for women," she said. "This aligns with midlife transitions where family, work and personal strain often converge. In examining marriage duration, 42,2% of divorces occurred within the first 10 years of marriage, highlighting that the early years remain the most vulnerable period for marital dissolution. The impact of children is considerable - 55,3% of divorces involved children under the age of 18, affecting a reported 18 850 children," she said. ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE "It is an adverse childhood experience contributing to trauma symptoms, hypervigilance, emotional numbing and intrusive memories of parental conflict. Children face various complications when their parents get divorced, such as relocation, changes in schooling, diminished access to one parent and often financial instability. "This crisis is particularly acute in divorces that occur within the first 10 years of marriage, when children are at a crucial stage of development. During these years, children need consistency and emotional security to form stable attachments with their parents. Young children struggling to make sense of their parents' divorce often internalise blame, develop abandonment fears and later struggle with trust and relational stability," she said. conflicts when they feel torn between their parents. This emotional tug-of-war intensifies when they are expected to take sides or act as confidants. "Children fare best when protected by consistent caregiving, reduced conflict and emotional support. It is not the divorce itself but the surrounding instability, unresolved parental conflict and emotional neglect that cause the long-term harm. Stability through predictable routines, housing and schooling helps children feel safe,” she said. THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT "Therapeutic support and responsive schools further aid recovery. Divorce is not just the end of a marriage, it requires forming a new parenting alliance

- a co-parenting relationship that supports the child during the childhood years. "Parental therapy and psychoeducation are vital. Parents must manage their own emotional responses to avoid passing emotional distress on to their children.," she said. "When they work together with their child's best interests at heart, families can rebuild, not in spite of divorce, but through it. Our responsibility as a society is to build environments where children do more than survive divorce, environments where they grow, thrive and feel emotionally secure as they navigate life's transitions. Let us ensure they are seen, heard and protected every step of the way," she said.

Dream big and be the agent of your own life In a world shaped by systems one's mindset is the one thing that can set one free, and set one apart. It's not your background, your bank account, or even your education that determines your future; it's the way you think. All these things are useless when the mind is blind. When you dare to think differently, to question what's around you and craft your own path you step into your power. That's what truly separates those who succeed from those who settle. I learnt this early, not from textbooks but from watching people accept the life they never chose. Where I come from in the Boland it's common to see young people finish school only to end up in predictable jobs on farms, in restaurants, behind counters. Honest work, yes, but not always born from dreams. Too often it's just what's available. Just what's handed to you. But what if we didn't accept what's handed to us? At the age of 10 I began dreaming of a life beyond what I saw, beyond my colourful essays. I didn't know where exactly I was going, but I knew I couldn't allow my environment to shrink my imagination. I crafted a universe in my mind, one where I could break cycles, define my own success and live with purpose. Even at this age I do that. Life is by no means easy. Life tests you in subtle and serious ways, through finances, health, limited access, just to name a few. It throws you a general dish, a one-size fits all blanket and tells you to be grateful.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT; IT’S OFTEN YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH. But I refused to accept the idea that this was all there was. And that refusal became my strength. My father once told me "smooth seas never made skilled sailors, and when you are born into a system your first act of freedom is to question it." That quote has never left me. It's guided the way I move through the world. Systems, political, economic, educational, the media don't just shape what's possible for us, but how we think what is possible. And if you don't break free of the script you were handed you'll play a role you never auditioned for. June is Youth Month and this year's theme, "Skills for the Changing World, Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation", points us towards the future. Mindset is the hidden engine driving our choices, fuelling our creativity and expanding our vision. It's that small spark that says "there must be more than this." Thoughts are powerful. They come from what we consume in our conversations, our culture, our environment. But when you start thinking independently everything changes. You stop chasing appearances and start building substance. You stop measuring your worth by what you wear, where you live or what you drive and start defining success on your own terms. After all, one of the greatest traps of our time is an obsession with looking successful. What sets you apart, really, is how deeply you think, how courageously you act, and how consistently you build, what you're planting when no-one is watching. That's the difference maker. You know, "be the change you want to see." If there's one thing I want young people (like myself) to take from this Youth Month, it's this: Don't be afraid to be different; it's often your greatest strength. Who benefits when property prices explode? An absurd budget yes, a home bought in 1990 for R132 000 is now suddenly R4 million worth. Most of us could afford a home of R130 000 in 1990 but not a home of R4 million today. In the meantime most became pensioners too, and some with zero pension. So what have gone up in the last 30 years of bond period? Building, material and labour cost? So my home still is worth R130 000 because we could afford it, not the property, but the monthly bond payback premiums. Also, are the property marketing companies flairing up the value over the years by comparing property values with replacement cost to earn more sales commissions? The difference between a R130 000 property and a R4 million property monthly bond premiums is way out and for most of us unaffordable! Those fixed tariff benefits can't be legal, because why do pay a monthly property tax? For what? We bought the plots to build, according to the municipal rules and regulations, by the developer or private owner and it's registered on our name, so why the property tax?Is their a binding contract between

home owners and the municipality? Does the contract make room for future additional tarrifs? No, because they think they own us and can do as they feel and get away with it because they think they are every propery owners government. I declare here and publicly that I refuse to pay an extra monthly tariff fee for clean-up. In many property owners's opinion, it's daylight robbery and people are fast asleep (the frog in already boiling water). The City "Masters" must choose: either the property tax go or all the extra tariffs go. I clean my street in front of my paid-up property myself. We are not the waisters. Rus in vrede, Christa Pligsgetrou en hardwerkend was Christa Cronjé van Parow-Noord haar lewe lank. In die jare sewentig was sy baie lank die saalsekretaresse by Tygerberg-hospitaal se hartsaal A6, waar sy 'n leeftyd se vriende gemaak het. Prof. Helmut Weich was haar hoof. Sy was ook een van die eerste mense wat met prof. Chris Barnard gepraat het nadat hy destyds die wêreld se eerste hart oorgeplant het. Dit was in 1974, toe Barnard direk ná die operasie die hoofkardioloog by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, prof. Helmut Weich, bel met dié groot nuus. Baie lank daarna, toe ek as pasiënt by prof. Weich se privaat praktyk was en hy hoor ons is susters, het hy met groot lof van A6 se mev. Christa Cronje gepraat, met baie groete ook aan haar. Kort daarna is hy oorlede. Nou onlangs met my suster se opname in die Mediclinic Panorama se hoësorgeenheid, het sy seun, ook prof. Helmut Weich, die laaste prosedure op haar uitgevoer. Christa is op 19 Mei oorlede. Sy sou op 9 Julie 90 word. Christa was 'n bekende by die markte in Milnerton, Parow en ook by die oudhedehandelaars daar. Sy was baie gesond, het geen kroniese medikasie gebruik nie, het geen oog- of gehoorprobleme gehad nie, maar het begin ly onder rugpyne, wat haar mobiliteit en kragte verswak het. Volgens Renette Bouwer, beoordelaar van die landswye streeksfeeste, verhef ATKV-Applous Suid-Afrikaanse koorsang tot nuwe hoogtes. Sy sê voorts dat ander deelnemers aan internasionale koorkompetisies geïntimideerd is deur Suid-Afrikaanse kore danksy die hoë gehalte van koorsang

wat deur ATKV-Applous aangespoor word. Oudergewoonte is die kore van die laerskole Durbanville, Gene Louw en Eversdal onder die finaliste in die afdeling vir prestige laerskoolkore. Hulle ding vanjaar ook teen die kore van die Laerskool Elarduspark in Pretoria en die Table View Primary School in Kaapstad in dié afdeling mee. Dié eindstryd vind op Donderdag 31 Julie plaas. Die koor van die Laerskool Totius in Bellville is 'n finalis in die merieteafdeling vir Afrikaanse laerskoolkore, wat op Woensdag 30 Julie plaasvind.

PRESTIGE HOËRSKOOLKORE Die meisieskoor van die Hoërskool Stellenberg, ook 'n ou bekende in die eindstryd van dié koorkompetisie, gaan sy slag in die afdeling vir meisieskore in die prestige hoërskole-afdeling teen die kore van die Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria en die Eunice High School in Bloemfontein wys. Die seunskoor van die Hoërskool Tygerberg in Parow het in die merieteafdeling vir hoërskoolkore na die eindstryd deurgedring, maar die koor het intussen aan die kompetisie onttrek. BICYCLE LEAGUE CHAMPS CROWNED AT DEVONBOSCH

highly successful Bicycle League season wrapped up with an exciting Western Cape Regional Final on Saturday 24 May at Devonbosch. Twenty primary schools from four districts competed in a spirited showdown, showcasing strong individual and team performances. Schools competed in genderbased teams, with the top five individual results per school combined to determine overall standings. Gene Louw and Eversdal claimed the boys’ and girls’ titles, scoring 850 and 830 points respectively. In the boys’ division, Mikro placed second with 750 points, followed by Applewood from Elgin (598). The girls’ competition saw a tie for second between Mikro and Bruckner de Villiers of Idas Valley (both on 740 points), with Eversdal taking the win. Independent riders from non-participating schools were also included. Backed by the EduInnov8 Foundation and run by

Cycle2Ride, the Bicycle League is about more than racing. A structured qualification system supports fair growth, with cluster, district and regional events. Categories are capped at 40 riders, and the top five in each earn podium medals. This season, 25 events were held, leading to the finals. Based on the ShortTrack/XCC format, the League uses short, non-technical courses and quick races to keep cycling accessible. Events are held midweek, making it easier for schools to participate. “Courses are beginner-friendly but exciting, and midweek racing fits into the school calendar,” says programme director Meurant Botha. Endorsed by Cycling South Africa and Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA), the League creates a development pathway for official SCSA provincial and national competitions. Over the past three years, cycling development in the Bottelary Hills region has seen remarkable progress. Ten riders
