Road rehabilitation works alongLa Belle Road in Stikland, Bellville areprogressing well, with theCity of CapeTown setting arevised target completion dateofmid-September.
The City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, recently visited the project site —the stretchbetween Strand Road andWillow Street —toinspect progress first-hand.
The road, whichcarriesahigh volume of heavy-vehicle traffic through the industrial area, was found to be in particularly poor condition, requiring afar more intensive intervention than straightforward resurfacing. Existing road layers are being recycled in stages, aprocessthatisless visually apparent to passers-by but fundamental to thelongterm integrity of the road.
“I would like to thank residents, businessesand road users for their patiencethusfar —I knowithas been a lengthy project. The road was in avery poor condition and required amuch deeper treatment thanjust resurfacing, duetothe volume of heavy vehicle movement in this industrial area. Cape Town’s Karl BremerHospital this year marksits 70th anniversary.Several events arebeing plannedfor the remainderofthe year to celebrate this significant milestone, and on Friday lastweek, one of them took place at the nurse’s homewhere guest speakers reflected on the time goneby.
Jonathan Lucas, chief executive ofKarl Bremer Hospital,was one of the speakers whoexplained the rich history behind the hospital, andhow it has changed overthe years.
He described the hospital asone of the Western Cape’s more established and respected hospitals, established in1956 as an academic hospital for Stellenbosch University.
“It served as the university’s primary foundational teaching and training hospital. Over the years the hospital evolved from its academic roots to become an integral healthcare institution serving people of Bellville andthe surrounding communities,” said Lucas.
HISTORY
Karl Bremer Hospital first opened its doors in 1956 at acost —atthattime—of 12 million pounds.
“In the same year the hospital was inaugurated as atraining hospital forStellenbosch University’smedical students.”
Over the years the hospital has seen many changes, Lucas said.
“During the 1970’s the hospitalofficially changedits status from academic training hospital, to an ordinaryprovincial community hospital. Duringthe 1980’s
the hospitalcontinuously underwent minor renovations to accommodate the growing community with diverse health needs. Duringthe 1990’sthe hospital faced stormy periods when its very existence becameunder threat. During the 2000’s the hospitalofficially changedits status fromaregional hospital to adistrict hospital andsaw manyofits specialists transferred to Tygerberg Hospital. Some calm returnedinthe next decade, which saw thehospital confirmeditself as a largebasedmetro districthospital,”Lucas explained.
During this period astate-of-the-art emergency centre was constructed, while abrandnew warehouse was also constructed to keep up with thegrowing supply chain needs. The nursesresidence wasalsocompletely renovated,said Lucas.
In 2020 the hospitalwas alsoonthe frontline, managing theCovid-19outbreak.
“Thehospital providedscreening,testing, treatment andcare to thousands of Covid-19 patients. It was alsoone of the firsthospitals to roll out the Covid-19 vaccinations.”
OPERATIONS
Lucas said to date the hospitalmanages abudget ofover R650 million, has311 inpatient care beds and809 funded posts.
“It hasincreased its medical specialists pool withadditionstoemergency physicians,paediatriciansand orthopedic specialists.”
Lucas also said thatthe hospitalhas strengthened its clinical therapy services, corporate admin andsupport services, and is lookingforward to strengtheningits surgicalservicesoffering, thatwill soon welcome apermanent anesthetist to its pool

“The hospital looks forward to its refurbishment of the main hospital as well as theplanned new acute pshyciatric unit that will be addedtothe hospital in the future,” said Lucas.
Despite theday-to-day challenges such as servicepressures, resource constraints and infrastructure maintenance issues, he said, thehospital is proud to be ahospital of choice for many underprivileged people.
“For the past financial year, the hospital has admitted over 27 000 patients, performed over 7000 surgical operations and provided patient caretomore than 2000 patients, and emergency care to over 34 000 patients. We area hospital that is firmly embedded, ourfoundations remain and we carefor people,” said Lucas.

Cape Town is gearing up to host the world’s top hockey nations after being confirmed as the venue for the 2025–26 FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup, taking place from Thursday 11 June, to Saturday 20 June at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory.
The South AfricanHockey Association said in astatement the prestigious tournament forms part of the global competition structure of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and provides the winning nation with the opportunity to be promoted to the 2026–27 FIH Hockey Pro League, the pinnacle of internationalhockey competition.
The event will feature an outstanding lineup of international teams including South Africa, New Zealand, France, Korea, Japan, Wales, Malaysia, Scotland and Ireland.
Scotland earned their place through promotion viathe FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2, while Ireland enter the tournament following their participation in the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League season.
