The South African Revenue Service (Sars) introduced new digital improvements aimed at making the 2026 tax filing season process faster, simpler and more secure.

The filing season officially begins with the Auto Assessment period from 1to12July, followed by filing for non-provisional taxpayers from 13 July to 23 October.Provisional taxpayershave until 22 January 2027 to submit their returns, while trusts can file from 19 September 2026 until 22 January 2027.

To manage the expectedsurge in online traffic aheadofthe AutoAssessment period, SARS has introduced anew “Waiting Room” on itseFiling platform.

The limited-functionality webpage allows eligible individual taxpayers to securely view their Auto Assessmentresults in read-only mode during peak periods,reducing pressure on the core eFiling system.

Sars said taxpayers selected for Auto Assessment will receive an SMS or email between 1and 12 July informing them whether they qualify for a refund or owe tax. If all the information is correct, no further action is required.

“If you areinagreementwith yourauto-assessment, then there is no need to ‘accept’ the assessment,” said Sars. “If arefund is due to you it will automatically be paid into your bankaccount.”

Taxpayers are advised to wait

for an official SMSoremail before logginginto eFiling or the SarsMobiApptochecktheir Auto Assessment status.

Thosewho do not receive a notification by 12Julywillneed to submitanIncomeTax Return (ITR12) usingeFiling or the Sars MobiApp from 13 July.

Sarshas also introduced several changes for the 2026 filing season, including more prefilled information on tax returns, simplifiedquestions,improved guidance on tax residency, an updated eFilinginterface anda newdeclaration alert questionnaireaimedatreducing verification delays

Another newfeatureallows taxpayerstoreceivetheir Notice of Assessment (ITA34) andStatementofAccountvia WhatsApp, whilesupportingdocuments can alsobeuploadedthrough the messagingplatform.

Sarsencourages taxpayers to ensure their banking,contact and personal detailsare up to date before filingbegins. It has also warnedtaxpayers to remain vigilant against phishing scams and fraudulent emails or SMSes during the filing season.

Taxpayersshouldnever respondtosuspicious messages requesting personalinformation or payment.

Sars said taxpayers should make use of its digital services, includingeFiling,the Sars MobiApp and the Sars Online QuerySystem,toregister, submitreturns,upload supporting documents and resolve queries withoutvisiting abranch

Owners of thousands of older Toyota,Lexus and Hino vehicles are being urged to check whether their vehicles areaffected by the global Takata airbagrecall as Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) launches its renewed "Don't Risk it, Fix it" campaign

This is not anew recall butanenhanced effortto reach owners who have not respondedtoprevious safety notices issued since 2015.

The Takata airbag recall is regarded as thelargestautomotive safety recall in history, affecting multiple vehiclemanufacturers worldwide. According to Toyota, less than 50% of affected vehicles in SouthAfrica have still not been repaired, leavingdrivers and passengers at risk

It says the recallwas prompted after certain Takata airbag inflators were found to be susceptible to moistureintrusion over time. Thiscan cause excessive pressure insidethe inflator when the airbag deploys during acollision, potentially causing it to rupture and propelmetal fragmentsthrough theairbag, increasing the risk of serious injury to vehicleoccupants.

Toyotasaid no injuriesorfatalities linked to thedefect have been reported in SouthAfrica to date.

The recall applies to the following models: Corolla (20022017),RAV4 (2003-2005),Fortuner (2005-2015),Hilux (2004-2015), Yaris (2005-2017),Avensis (20062008),Auris (2007-2013),RunX (2002-2007),Lexus IS (2006-2012), Lexus SC (2008),Lexus RX (2016) and Hino 300 Series (2011-2017) Toyota SouthAfrica Motors CEO and president, Andrew Kirby, said the company wants to ensure every affected vehicle is repaired.

“We are calling on all communities to ‘Don’t Risk It,Fix It’,” he said. “This is not anew recall, but an enhanced campaign to ensure every affected vehicle is accounted for and repaired.

“Our goal is to remove any existing barriers to continuous action and to make it as easy as

possible for owners to get theirvehicles fixed, at no cost to them.” The campaign includes renewed notifications to owners, free safetyinspections and repairs through Toyota’s dealership network and service centres, communityawareness events and multilingual communication to reach more motorists.

Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected by contacting the Toyota Call Centre on 0800 139 111 with their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or by verifying their VINonline through the official recall pages for Toyota, Lexus or Hino. Customers are also encouraged to use the MyToyota, My Lexus and Hino-Connect mobile applications for recall notifications.

“Al die jare het ek gedink ek is in beheer,” vertel sy. “Maar daar kom ’n tyd wanneer jou hele dag se roetine om alkohol draai en jy nie meer sonderdit kan funksioneer nie.”

Wat eers begin hetasietswat plesier gebringhet, het geleidelikverander in ietsveel donkerder. Sy hetplekke vermy waardaar nie alkohol was nie, haarself al hoe meer vanander afgesonder en uiteindelik agter geslote deuregedrink. “Wanneer die lekkerdaarvan eensaamheidword, weetjyietsisverkeerd. Ek wou nooit aanvaar dat alkohol ’n probleem wasnie.”

Die pad na herstel wasnie eenvoudig nie. Volgens Moniquewas sy selfhaar grootste struikelblok. “Ek wou nie myself aan AA oorgeenie. Ek wasbang. Bang oor hoe ek sou oorleef sonder alkohol.”

Dit was deur AlkoholisteAnoniem (AA) dat sy geleer het om haar lewe weer dagvir dagaan te pak. “AA hetmy geleer om sekere plekke,mense en dinge te vermy, en om alles een dagop’nslag te vat.”

Die impak van haar verslawing het byna elke aspek van haar lewe geraak. Sy beskryf haarself in daardietyd as iemand watbloot bestaan het. “Ek was

soos ’n zombie. Ek konnie funksioneer sonderalkoholnie.”

Haar verhoudingshet verbrokkel, haar selfbeeld het verdwyn en sy het haarself begin verloor. “Die laaste verhouding waarin ekwas, waschaos. Familie en vriende hetmynie meer vir kuiers genooi nieomdat hulle skaamwas vir my.Myselfbeeld wasinskerwe. Ek het nie omgegee hoeeklyk nie.”

Vandag klink haar stem anders –sterker, rustiger en vol dankbaarheid. “Ekleefvoluit. Ek leef met’nvaste fondasieen’nsterk verhouding metGod wat eerste in my lewe is.”

Hoewelsyerken datsymense gedurende haarjare van alkoholmisbruik seergemaak het, hoop sy dat vergifnis mettyd sal kom.“Ek hoop die mensewat ek seergemaak het, kanmyeendag vergewe. Ek is gelukkig.Ekbou verhoudingsop’n vaste fondasie. My selfbeeld is terug. Ek kan weer lag en weer na myself in die spieël kyk.”

Volgens haar bestaan daar steeds baie wanopvattingsoor alkoholisme. “Mense dink die persoon het geen wilskragnie enwonderhoekomhulle nie net kan ophou nie. Vir ’n alkoholis werk dit nie so nie.”

Sy beskryf alkoholismeas’nsiekte wat begrip, ondersteuning en hulp vereis. “Ekhet baie kere gesê dit is my laaste drankie, maar ek kon dit nooit deurvoer nie. Mensemoethulself oor alkoholisme opvoedvoordat hulle oordeel.”
