BVMtargets Rawsonvilleand De Wetareas

Facilities upgraded

Breede Valley Municipality (BVM) marked asignificant milestone in advancing community sport and recreation with the officialopening of two upgraded sports facilities in Rawsonville andDeWet on Tuesday (10 March).

The upgrade was co-fundedthrough the MunicipalInfrastructure Grant (MIG).

According to John Bulani, aspokespersonfor BVM,both projects commenced last year and were completedinMarch 2026, with Amandla Constructionappointedthe main contractor.

He said asignificantportion of the construction work, including structures at Rawsonville, was subcontractedto a local contractor, in this waycreating employment opportunitiesfor local residents.

The engineering consultancyfor the project was provided by Kantey& Templer, who oversaw design and quality control throughoutthe process.

Hy saidwith an overall budget of R12 505 412,74, theRawsonvilleSports ground has undergoneacomprehensive refurbishment, transforming it into a modern, safe and accessiblefacility for sport, recreationand community events

KEYIMPROVEMENTSINCLUDE:

• Refurbishmentofthe main sportsfield withnew grass and reshaping of the surface;

• Upgraded rugby/goalposts for the main field;

• Spectator fencing for the main and practice fields;

• Construction of anew practice field with irrigation and rugby/goalposts;

• Bleachers installed forspectators next to the mainfield; Construction of access andemergency roads;

• Repairstoexisting precast walls and replacement of gates;

• Rerouting of sewer infrastructure;

• Refurbishmentofexisting change rooms;

• New ablutionfacilities for males, females,and persons with disabilities;

• Construction of acanteenand kitchen; Pavingand fencing of the courtyard betweenbuildings;

• Installation of security cameras at key buildings.

ChrisSmal, manager of municipal facilitiesatBVM, told Standard Breederivier Gazette:“Therugby season started lastweekend, so we already have[rugby] matches scheduled for the coming weekend

“So theproject finished at the right time.”

AldAntoinette Steyn, Executive Mayor of BVM, said anew sports ground for Rawsonville has been on the Integrated Development Plan’s (IDP) needs list for some time now.

She made an appealtothe community to lookafter their new upgraded sports facility,because the facility nowbelongs to them

According to Bulani theupgrading of the Fanie Otto Sports Ground in De Wet wascompleted at acostofR5675 076,94, delivering significantimprovements aimedatenhancing community recreation andsporting opportunities for localresidents.

“The project included the installation of aspectator fence around the existing sports fields, improving safety and providing amore structured environment forcommunity events andsporting activities.

“Aspartofthe broaderdevelopmenta newchildren’splayareaequipped with playequipmentwas alsoconstructed, creating adedicatedspace where younger residents cansafelyenjoyoutdoor recreation.”

He says adjacenttothe playarea, the projectdeliveredtwo newmulti-purpose combi-courts, designed to accommodate netball,basketball andvolleyball, in this way expanding the rangeofsporting activities available to the community.

Bulanisaid to furtherpromote healthy lifestylesanew outdoor gym facility was alsoinstalledbehindthe courts,allowingresidents to make useofaccessible fitness equipmentinanopen-airenvironment.

“Together with the upgradesatthe Rawsonville SportGrounds,the municipality hasinvestedapproximately R18 million in improving sports andrecreational infrastructure.”

Liezel van derWesthuisen,die hoof van Laerskool Wynland, sê hulle het in die vorige jaar 600 aansoeke virgr.R en gr.1ontvang, maar net ’nbeperkte aantal plekke beskikbaar gehad.“Ouers word vriendelikaangemoedig om hul kinders in te skryf in die huistaal wat die gesin gebruik. National Gardens Week takes place from 9to15March and the Karoo Desert National Garden in Worcester is throwing its doors wide open

Visitors get free entry to this home of South Africa’ssucculent diversity and can see the Brunsvigia bosmaniae (Maartblom) in flower.There willbea plant sale and 10% discount on meals at the restaurant. On Friday 13 March from17:00 there will be food trucks as well as art-and-craft stallstobrowse through.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is offeringfree access to its botanical and zoological gardens for South African citizens and residents to explore the wonders of nature. It saysSouth Africaranks as thethird most biodiverse country in the worlddue to its high levels of endemism(species thatappear onlyinone spot) and being home to more than 95 000 species.

Kirstenbosch, Walter Sisulu and Pretoria National Botanical Gardens are offering free entry from 9to13March. The National Zoological Gardensoffersfree entry until 13 March and asmall entry fee of R26 on the weekend of 14-15 March.

On the theme “Your free passport to nature, celebrate, restore and protect alllife” take apeacefulwalk through the gardens,aguided tour learning aboutconservation efforts or afun family day. Gardens are

known toplayanessential role in valued biodiversityconservation, education and well-being.

At the Walter Sisulu National Botanical GardensinRoodepoort, Johannesburgvisitors can enjoy the nest-building activities and display flightsofthe majestic Verreaux’s Eagles.

AtCape Town’s Kirstenbosch National BotanicalGardens, at thefoot of Table Mountain, explore the iconic Boomslang treetop walkwayand stroll through ancient cycads, proteas and fynbos.

At the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical GardensinPietermaritzburg explore grasslands in searchofendemic Bola spiders.

At the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, near Betty’s Bay, biodiversity is celebrated through art,nature andcommunity. Activities in the garden include hiking, picnicking, birdwatching andguided tours.

TheLowveld National Botanical Gardens in Nelspruit boasts many fruits such as marula (Sclerocarya birrea), sausage tree (Kigelia africana), Cordyla africana andOncoba spinosa.

At the Mokopane Biodiversity Conservation Centre in Limpopo visitors canlearn aboutthe endangered animals at the centre.

TheThohoyandou National Botanical Garden, also in Limpopo, offers guided walks and scenic trails, with the opportunity to learn about unique plants and animals.

The Free State National BotanicalGardeninBloemfontein boasts 43 indigenous trees on its Tree Route, including a200-yearold Olea Africanaaswell as a wide selection of medicinal plants.

Die plakkers wat in die ou motorhuise oorkant die Worcesterstasie gebly het, is deur Transnet verwyder. Die motorhuise en draadhokke is afgebreek sodat hulle nie kan terugkeer nie.

Dit kom as goeie nuus vir inwoners in die omgewing, wat gekla het dat daar misdadige elemente onder dié groep mense was. Daar was klagtes dat werkers vandie Laerskool Wynland deur dié plakkers aangerand is en ’n wapen is glodeur diepolisie tussen hul besittings gevind

Dieskool het skadegely as gevolg van gekniptedrade, die diefstal van krane en waterpype, asook kragbokse waarvan die drade geknip is.

Inwoners in die omgewing het onveilig gevoel en gekla die motorhuise en draadhokke was baie vuil en onhigiënies en vullis is daar gestort.

Volgens dieraadslid dr. Julian Kritzinger was dieplakkers nie op munisipale eiendom nie en konwetstoepassers dusnie teen hulle optreenie.

“Transnet se regsafdeling het

’n uitsettingsbevel bekom om daardie plakkers uit te sit en Transnet het die draadhokke afgebreek,” het hy gesê.

“Die wyksraadslid van Wyk 12, raadslid VernonBedworth, was die hele tydbetrokke by die proses en het met Transnet geskakelomdie probleem onder hulle aandag te bringenoptevolg.” Transnet het gesê die verwydering van dié plakkers was deel van ’n gekoördineerdeoptrede saam met die polisie.

“Die strukture is onwettig bewoon en op ’n manier gebruik wat veiligheids- en bedryfsrisiko’s veroorsaak het,” het Transnet gesê.

“’nOntleding het gewysdat die onwettigebewoners uit nabygeleë gemeenskappekom. Hierdie ingryping is gedoen om openbare veiligheid en verantwoordelike batebestuur te verseker.”

Om te verseker dat soortgelyke voorvalle nie weer plaasvind nie, het Transnet Property aangedui hulle het bykomende veiligheidsmaatreëls ingebring, soos om die vensters en deure van oorblywende geboue in die gebied te beveilig.

Last week Friday (6 March) agreat honour wasbestowed uponEsselen Park Senior Secondary School in Worcester whentwo national ministers paid the school avisit to hand over 10 Smart Identity Cards and 25 tablets to Grade 12 learners.

Dr Leon Schreiber, National Minister of Home Affairs, and SiviweGwarube, National Minister of Basic Education, were accompanied by Yusuf Simons, Provincial Head of the Department of Home Affairs, Desmond Ceasar,Circuit Manager for the Cape Winelands Education District, councillor Antoinette Steyn, Executive Mayor for BreedeValley Municipalityand councillor MargaretSampson.

Before the official handing over of the Smart IdentityCards and devices SchreibertoldGrade 12 learners: “You can’t participate in societywithout an identity.

“The Identity Cards that we are handing overtoday is the most powerful key you havetounlock

opportunities.

“This ID Card is more importantthanyourbank card, because if you don’t have an ID, you can’t open abankaccount. “You actually need that[ID] to prove who you are –toprove that you are aSouth African and then you can getaccess to theservices that you require.”

Schreiber emphasised that even before you open abankaccount, you need the ID towrite matric, and to access opportunities as you move through life.

“If youneed to have apension oneday, you havetohave this powerful ID.

“So whatweare bringing to you here todayisnot apiece of plastic, it is not some routine document that youcan treatasan afterthought. It is the key to your future.

“I amasking you to look after it. Understand the powerofthat ID. It symbolisesthatyou are a South African, that you belongin this country andthatyourfuture isinthis country butalso the practicalbenefits that it unlocks for you.”

“We bring to you smart devices that you canuse so that you can access learning and we make sure that we infuse technology –not only in just alife of its own but also in away in which you learn.

“It is oneofour key priorities as the Department of Basic Education to ensure that everyone has a device in their hand.”

She urged learners to look after the devices so that their fellow learners –when they gettograde 12 –are also able to use it so that they tooare able to openupa world of opportunities for themselves.

“We need to makesure thatEsselen Park learners are able to go outand respond to the demands of the economy because ultimately we have to make sure that learners are leaving here with not just amatric certificate but with a certificate that says Iamready to enter the world of work.

“I am ready to be able to go to university andIamready to be able to changemylife for the better.”

Increase in meningitis cases in Western Cape

Aclose eyeisbeing kepton the numberofmeningococcal meningitis casesinthe Western Cape, according to the province’sDepartment of Health and Wellness.Two caseshavebeen reported in the CapeWinelands.

There have been 11 casesfor the period of 1Januaryuntil 22 February thisyear, with one patient whodied. Themajority of cases were childrenyounger thanone year old

These casesare sporadicand do notconstitute an outbreak, the departmentsaid Eight caseswererecordedin the Cape Town Metro district, two in theCapeWinelands andone case in the Overberg District.

Cases of measles anddiphtheria arealsoconcerningwith 203 confirmedcases in the Cape Town Metrobetween29December last year and15February. Targeted measles vaccination is being doneinnearbyareas This outbreak, says the department, is duetodeclining childhood immunisation rates.

“We aremonitoring disease surveillance data to identify trends, clusters,outbreaks and areasthat must be prioritised fortarget vaccination or outreach,” it said in astatement.

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis.The disease is severe butisuncommon. It spreadsthrough fine droplets released during speaking,coughing,orsneezing, especiallyin situations wherepeople are in close contactsuch as schools, crèches, hostels, andstudent residences

Symptomstolookout for include asuddenonset of fever, intense headache,nauseaand vomiting, stiff neck, irritability, sensitivity to light, arash with small, darkred discolorations on the body.

Parents areadvised to seek immediatemedical help if their childdevelopthese symptoms, as meningitis canbefatal.

Meningococcal disease is endemic to South Africa, occurring all year round, with apeak from June to October.Infants arethe most affected, followed by the 15 -24-year agecategory. It is anotifiable medicalcondition,and all confirmed cases must be reported, with timeous follow-up andprovision of antibiotics to exposed closecontacts

Certainstrains of meningococcal diseasecan be prevented through vaccination.The meningococcalvaccine is notpart of the national immunisation programmebut is accessible at tertiary hospitals whereitis offeredtoindividuals identified as beingathighriskfor invasive meningococcaldisease or privately when prescribedbya doctor

Thedepartmentencourages parents to vaccinate their childrentoavoid preventable diseases, such as measles and diphtheria.

Free childhoodvaccinesare available at all public health facilitiesand catch–updoses canbeadministered if achild hasmisseda scheduled immunisation.Immunisations are alsoavailable through private healthcareprovidersand public–private partnerships

This past weekend Worcester Cricket Club (CC) gave Bredasdorp arun fortheir money when theygave abrilliant performance after defeating themin twoseparate matches

On Saturday (7 March) Worcester hosted BredasdorpatEsselen Park Stadiumin Worcester.

After losing the toss Worcester was asked to bowl,adecision that would later be regretted.

Worcester’sAshwin Lukas(3/27) and Christiaan Strydom (4/8) put up adom-

inantbowling display. Bredasdorp were eventuallybowledout for 56.

The openers of Worcester made light work in their chase of the target and managedtoget the totalin8.3 overs.

Worcester ended their innings on 62 for theloss of no wicket. Morné Scholtz (42* of 32 balls) and Brenden Henning (16 of 19 balls) were the opening batsmen.WorcesterCCwon by 10 wickets.
