Volgens Septemberhet sy omstreeks04:00met moeite alleen deur die watermassa, wat heuphoogte was, gesukkel om hulp te gaan soekvir haar kinders, asook vir ander kindersenbejaardes watinhul informele woonstrukture vasgekeer was

“Ek het sommer van die mansmense wat op pad waswerk toe voorgekeer om tekom help, want die waterwas vir onsvroue te sterk om die kinderstedra.”

Volgens haar het die mansdie vreesbevange kinders op hul rûe en nekke getel en hulle deur die watermassa na veiligheid gedra.

Sy vertel dat bejaardes en gestremdes in dromme gelaai moes word omhulle deur die watermassas na veiligheidteneem

Daar is ook selfoon-videomateriaal wat grootskaalse oorstromings in Hexpark wys.

Maandag moesinwoners van die Spokiesdorp informele nedersetting in Rawsonville ook inderhaas hul woonstrukture ontruim toe die watervlakke van die Smalblaarrivier vinnig gestyg het.

Volgens Theo Botha,hoof van die Breedevallei-munisipaliteit (BMV)sebrand- en reddingsdienste, moesinwoners in Roodewal, Zweletemba,Avianpark en Rawsonville as gevolg van die gure weersomstandighede inderhaas hul wonings ontruim.

Hy sê hierdie mense is na plekke van veiligheid geneem waar hulle van onder meer maaltye, matrasse en komberse voorsien word.

“Vandag (Dinsdag) gaan onsdie situasie herevalueer. Ons sal ook meer hulpbronne beskikbaar stel om die gemeenskap by te staan.”

STAPTOG

Michael se ma, Alex Waltman,het bevestigdat hy blykbaar ’n oornagstaptog wou aanpak. “Ons weet nie watter roete hy wou stap nie,maar dit was vermoedelik vanaf die lodge.”

Daar is verskeie staproetes in die omgewing, vanaf die lodge,sowelas CapeNature-roetes in die Limietberg-na tuurreservaat (die Elandsrivier- en die Kromrivier-staproetes) watnet ’n paar kilometer van die lodge af is.

Afriforum het haar Sondag gekontak en aangebiedomook te komhelpommet hommeltuie te soek sodra die stormweer opklaar.

Alex het haar misnoeëuitgespreek oor mense wat bespiegel en valse kommentaar op sosiale media lewer –soosdat hy gevindis.

Nadat sy verlede week by die lodge was, het sy Michael se motor, wat nogdaar ge-

parkeer was, teruggeneem Kuilsrivier toe.

Ouers van omliggende plase in dieDe Doorns-gebied vrees vir hul kinders se veiligheid omdat daar sedertdie begin van die skooljaargeen leerdervervoer vir hulle is nie.

Die bekommerde ouers hetDonderdagoggend (7 Mei)ingrootgetalle opgeruknadie FJ Conradie Primêre Skool en ’n vreedsameprotesoptogvoor die skool gehou om hul ontevredenheid hieroor te toon.

’n Bekommerde ouer, wat verkies om anoniem te bly, en wat namens die ander ouers praat, sê aan Standard BreederivierGazette dat die skool in ’nstadium aansoek gedoen hetvir leerdervervoer vir 200 kinders. Volgens haar kan die betrokke bus wat beskikbaar gestel is net sowat 60 leerders akkommodeer. Volgens haar is meer as 130 leerders tans sonder leerdervervoer.

Sy sê dit is hoofsaaklik kinders van

dag rondskarrel vir ’n rygeleentheid vir hulkinders.

Volgens haar sê die bestuurders van minibus-taxi’s dathulle nie hul kinders kan akkommodeer nie omdat die kontrak-minibus-taxi’s reeds vol is.

Bronagh Hammond,’nwoordvoerder vandie Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement(WKOD), sê die departement is bewus van die kommer wat ouers in die De Doorns-gebied geopper het rakende leerdervervoer gekoppel aanFJConradie Primêre Skool en omliggende boerderygemeenskappe. Groot kommer oor’ntekortaan leerdervervoer vir sommigeleerders na hul onderskeie skole heers in dielig van die opkomendeeksamen.

Die leerders wathierdeur geraak word, is verbonde aanEsslenparkSenior Sekondêr en Hoërskool Breërivier in Worcester.

Volgens Cliffie September, afgetrede skoolhoof en tanslid van die Interkaap Educatio- gemeenskap- en ontwikkelingsforum, gebruiksowat 300 leerders van die Hoërskool Breerivier,wat in die Rawsonville-omgewing woon,tansleerdervervoer. Hy sê sedert diebegin van die tweede kwartaal vanjaarhet net180 van hierdie leerders leerdervoer,terwyldie res tuis moet bly. September sê dit het ondersyaandaggekom dat die betrokke busmaatskappyvergoeding vir net 180 leerders ontvanghet Hy sê om hierdie rede hetdie busmaatskapp besluitomnet 180 leerders te vervoer.

“Die eksamensbegin binnekort. Suid-Afrika het reeds so ’n hoëwerkloosheidsyfer. Indien nog kinders sonder matriek gaan sit, gaan die werkloosheidsyfer net verder styg.”

Volgens September het ditook onder sy aandaggekom datleerdervervoernet beskikbaarisvir leerders verbonde aan Worcester Senior Sekondere skool, wat in die Scherpenheuvel, Lemoenpoort-, AandeDoorns-,Highlands- en Bo-Doringrivier woon. Hy sê geen leerdervervoerisegter vir leerders van Esselenpark Senior Sekondêr en Hoërskool Breërivier, watindieselfdeomgewings woon, beskikbaarnie.

“Ek kannie dink datEsselenparken Breërivier se hoofdenie om leerdervervoer aansoek gedoen het nie. Daardie leerders [Esselenpark en Breërivier]het dandie eerste kwartaal gery. Hoekom saldie hoofdedan net vir dieeerste

A25year old father fromthe farm De Fonteine, Agterklip-Hoogte in the district of Robertson, has been sentenced to ten years direct imprisonment on Thursday(7May) for neglecting his biological child of one year and nine months old. Twelve days later the child Michyle Plaatjies,was found deceased.

The accused Frederick Galant’s sentence follows after he pleaded guilty on the charge of child neglect.

In his plea agreement Galant admits that on 10 September 2023 he wasat De Fonteine farm, in the rural Agterklip-Hoogte area of Robertson. He further admits that at the time of the incident he and the child’s mother, Elzaan Plaatjies,were still in an amicable relationship,co-parentingand he fulfilled hisfinancial responsibilities in respect of their child.

According to Galant he had been socialising and drinking alcohol with friends the previous day until the early morning hours. He said upon waking up the next day they continued drinking. He admits he hadgone lookingfor Plaatjies. When she was not at home,he decided to take their childfrom the care where the child had been left anddecided to go and search for her (Plaatjies).

According to Galant the carer did not initially want to give the child to him and mentioned his state of intoxication He was upset that Plaatjies was not there and took his child. He admits that in doing so he acted wrongfully and placed his child at physical risk byhis actions. Galant admits thatashetook his child from the carer, he became responsible forhis parental duties towards his child.

Galant says that as he waswalking with his child he felt the need to urinate. He then decided to leave thechild alongthe road and went back to the house to use the facilities

He admits he left the child unattended and that he should have foreseen that this risky behaviour could place the child in physicaldanger due to his young age. According to him he is unable to account for how long he hadleft thechild unattended but that uponhis return, the child wasnolonger where he hadlefthim. He could notfindthe child.

According to Galant he started to searchfor the child foraperiod unknownbefore he raised the alarm for others tohelp searching. He admitsthat innot immediately requesting help to find the child, he acted wrongfully and placed the child sphysicalsafety in danger.

He admitsthatasthe search continued, he was confronted with his behaviourand he gotangry andinconfrontation with Plaatjies and theother community members. He also panicked inrecognising his complicity in the lead up to the child’sdisappearance. He further admitsthathethus did not co-operate as quickly as he should have, further risking his child’ssafety.

According to him acriminalinvestigation then ensued leading to his subsequent arrest.

Galant admits thathis child was found deceased following an extensive andhighly media published search operation, after 12 days. He further admits that although he wasunder the influenceofalcohol, he wasnot intoxicated to the point that he could not appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions.

He admitshis culpability in as far as it relates to his wrongful actions as set out,leading to the child being left unattended, wandering off, getting lost and beingexposed to the elements fora prolonged periodoftime, in that he neglected his parental duties andresponsibilities and omitted and neglected to take the necessary care andprotection stepsinherent to parental duties and responsibilities.

Inquest to probe2friends’ death in tent near festival

The police have launched an inquest into thesudden death of two businessmen from Durban who were founddead in theirtent on aprivate campingsite about 20 km from where the annual AfrikaBurn Festival washeldinthe Tankwa Karooatthe end of April this year.

The deceased, Anban Pillay (48) and Kavish Baldeo (44), were best friends AfrikaBurn is an annual week-long creative art experiment and community-driven festival heldinthe Tankwa Karoodesert of South Africa.

As an officialaffiliate with Burning Men, it focuses on radical selfexpression, participation and communal living, where attendees build “Tankwa Town” from scratch to create art, performances, and elaborate mutant vehicles.

According to Western Capepolice spokesperson, Capt FC vanWyk,itwas reportedthat twomale personsdiedof carbon monoxide poisoning.

“On Saturday 2May Ceres detectives attended ascene on afarm in Ceres. Upon members’ arrival theyfound the bodies of twomales layingon the ground inside astretch camping tent. They werefound by afriend whowas also staying on the premises.

“There was asmell of gas inside the tent and also ablue gas heater. Both of them were declared deceasedonthe scene.”

Aninformedsource told Nova News that whenthe menarrived at theentrance to the AfrikaBurn Festival there was something wrong with their tickets.

Accordingtothe source the menthen wentbacktoafarm stall down the road about20km further to getWiFitosort outthe problemswith their tickets.

“Theyeventually sorted out theproblemswith their tickets. It sounds like they wenttobed with their gasheater on.There were three of them

According to Lorraine Tanner, Executive Director forDevelopment at AfrikaBurn, it is important to note that theunfortunate incident did not occur at AfrikaBurn, and the deceased had not checkedinto the event priortothe incidentoccuring. Tanner says the incident occured atDaBoerCampingsite.

“While the individuals concerned had not checked into the event site, and wecan’t confirm them as attendees, weencourageeveryone to familiarise themselves with the equipment they are usingwhen they are camping.

For those planning to attend AfrikaBurn with no previous campingexperience, we strongly encourage people to team up with experienced campers.
