Die munisipaliteit het gedurende die onderbreking watertenkwaens beskikbaar gestel om inwoners by te staan, en dié ondersteuning sal voortduur totdat die stelsel volledig genormaliseer het.

As SouthAfrica enters the peak of its winter influenza season, health authorities areclosely monitoringa rise in flu casesacross several provinces,including infections linked to the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 strain, previously known as "swine flu"

In astatement issued on Tuesday (26 May), the NationalInstitute for CommunicableDiseases (NICD)and the National Department of Health assured the public thatthe strain is nowregarded as oneofthe regularseasonal influenza viruses thatcirculate annually.

According to the NICD, this year's flu season also includes cases of influenza A(H3N2)and influenza B. "Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 is now recognized globally as oneofthe regular seasonalinfluenza strains thatcirculate each year and management is the same as for other seasonalinfluenzastrains," the institute said.

Health officials explained thatmost healthy individualsexperience mild to moderate illness thatcan be managed at home with rest, fluids andover-thecounter medication. Common flu symptomsinclude fever, cough, sore throat, headaches, muscle andbodyaches,fatigue, as well as arunny or blocked nose

Cameron made thisremark shortlyafter his colleague Nicholas Gotsell, representative on the Judicial Services Commission,led an unannounced oversightvisit to the Worcester Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit(FCS) on Thursday (21 May).

Cameron says in aFacebook post that FCS units are supposed to be specialist policeunits dealing withfamilyviolence, child protection and sexualoffences.

According to him these are some of the most sensitive cases in thecriminal justice system, includingchild rape, sexual offences, abuse, abductionand seriouscrimes against vulnerable victims.

“What was foundatWorcester raisesserious questions about how the police is managing and resourcing thisspecialist function.

“Worcester FCS serves 10 policestations. The furthestis Laingsburg, approximately 175 km away. The unitisalso expected to deal with assault-related matters across all 10 stations, while still carryingresponsibility for child rape, sexualoffencesand seriouschild protection investigations.

The unithas seven vehicles in total,but that includes everything available tothem. One of those vehicles is asingle-cab vehicle, which is not suitable for transporting victims, especially vulnerable victims andchildren.

“The staffing situationisjust as concerning.For five of the stationsserved by WorcesterFCS, there are only threemembers per shift.For theother five stations, there is only one memberper shift.”

Cameronsays it was also indicated that theunit received no meaningful additional support last year. Accordingtohim this is not sustainable.

He says Gotsell hascorrectly raised theconcern that, across rural areas such as the Boland andOverberg, FCS investigators are being required to travel long distances for assaultand domestic violence-related matters that may, in appropriatecases,bebetter handled by localdetectives or designateddomestic violence officers.

“The issue is that the police appears to have expanded the workload of specialist FCS units without giving them the people, vehicles and support needed to do the job properly.

“Every hour an FCS investigator spends travellinghundreds of kilometres onamatter thatcould behandledlocallyisanhour notspent on achild rape docket, asexualoffence investigation, aforensic intervieworsuspect tracing.”

Cameron says if Worcester FCS is expected to cover 10 stations, including one175 km away, then police leadership must explain how this modelissupposed to work in practice.

“We will be asking the police leadership to account for the current FCS mandate, the docket load at Worcester FCS,vehicle availability, staffing per shift, rural travel demands andwhether appropriatematters canbe decentralised back to station-level detectives.

“South Africacannotsay it prioritises women andchildren while specialist units are stretched so thin that they are forced to carry abroad general detective workload without the resources to match it.

“FCS must be properly resourced, properly focused and protected as aspecialist investigative capability.”

An informed official also mentioned to Standard Breederivier Gazette ashortage of sexual assault evidence collection kits.

"This is achallenge and influences the delivery of vital services. Because of this shortage the waiting periods forvictims are longer.

“The geographical isolation of the areas thatare being served are nottaken into account when it comestothis.

"Our people are notclose to hospitals. Some have to drive far to hospitals only to find out there is no sexualassault evidence collection kit.

No progress in cases of missingpeople

The search operation continues for 40-year-old missing truck driver PoovinNarainsamy from Ormford, Phoenix in Durban, who went missing on 11 May in the midst of a devastating wind and rainstorm that hit the Western Cape two weeks ago.

According to Capt FC van Wyk, apolice spokesperson, Narainsamy’s Scania R580 truck left the road on the R43 near Witbrug, Wolseley, andplunged into waternexttothe road.He says the truckdriver’s whereabouts have been unknown ever since but the search operation continues

According to Van Wyk nearby towns’ hospitals including Worcester ProvincialHospital, Worcester Medi-Clinic, Lapa Munnik, Porterville, Paarl and also Tygerberg Hospital were contacted to find out whether a man with his name or fitting his description had been brought there, but to no avail.

He says the wreckage of the truck has been recovered. According to him the police diving unit, Emergency Medical Services andWolseleyPolice wereinvolved in the search for

the missing truck driver.

“Waste is no longer simply something to dispose of. It is increasingly recognised as a resource with economic value," Bredell said.

To see whether their idea to train visually-impaired students in cybersecurity was feasible,Crause wassent to the UnitedStates for three monthstocomplete courses at the World Services for the Blind. Back home, he had to transfer this knowledge to agroupofstudents. It was aresounding success.Viljoen,top student in that firstclass, now leads the training programme. “Wesoon realised that we’ll be able to complete muchmore advanced courses than the onesthat wereavailable to the visuallyimpaired Today, we are the only institution in the world that offers training to the visually-impairedonthisscale,”saidViljoen.

Large corporates suchasAbsaand Primedia sponsorthe course, with Absa offering internships and employmentin its cyber security departmenttomany of the students. The second co-hort of studentsfor this three-year programme has started this year

Thecourse comprisesseveral international certifications from companies such as Comptia, AWS, Microsoft, Cisco and others as well as artificial intelligence training. Authorities are clamping down on a shadowy network of illicit manufacturers androguedistributors of unregistered GLP-1and GIPmedicines containing Semaglutide, Tirzepatide or combination products promoted for weight loss.

Theproblem has spread countrywide, with generalpractitioners in Worcester reporting an increase in patients struggling with side effects after purchasing substances onlineorfrom informal distributors. Consumers seeking acheaper, quicker fix are unknowingly purchasing unverified chemicals that pose severe health risks.

The South African Health ProductsRegulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and theSouth African PharmacyCouncil(SAPC) have intensified enforcement action against the unlawful manufacturing and distribution of these medicines. They initiated ajoint investigation at iDexis (Pty) Ltd, trading as Sentra Pharmacy, in Silverton, Pretoria on 11 May. Theinvestigative team discovered criticalregulatory non-compliance and seized all GIP/GLP-1 injectable products. The company was producing and supplying medicines under the pretextofcompounding, but outside the legal framework permitted under local laws.

Compounding is strictly limited to the preparation of medicines for individual patients based on valid prescriptions. The facility allegedly manufactured and marketed GIP/GLP-1-basedproducts for commercial distribution, mainlyfor weight loss. The team found serious deficiencies in quality, safety andregulatory compliance.

Semaglutide andtirzepatide active pharmaceutical ingredients were illegally imported with no analytical testing to confirm identity, potency and purity. Manufacturing conditions were not sterile andposedahigh risk of contamination, with equipment insufficient for aseptic medical preparations. The room allocated for producing GLP-1/GIP productsdid not meet requirements for aseptically prepared

products. No pharmacovigilance system was in place to monitor or respond to adverse drug reactions.

“SAHPRA has also noted reportsof adverse events, including hospitalisations, linked to theuse of these products, as well as concerns regarding possible illegal importation of active pharmaceutical ingredientsand promotional activities targeting healthcare providers and consumers,” the organisation stated All productscontaining semaglutide, tirzepatide and related combinations were confiscated.The company has been instructed to initiate afull recall of affected productsdistributed through health-care providers, pharmacies and other channels.

“SAHPRA will continue to take decisive regulatory and enforcement action against any entity that contravenes theMedicines and Related Substances Act,” said the authority’sChief ExecutiveDrBoitumelo Semete-Makokotlela. Pharmacy professionals involved in illegal manufacturing will face further action. “Unlawful manufacturing, promotion and distribution of unregistered GLP-1 medicines for weight loss is aserious violation of thelaw and adirect threat to public safety. Following theinspection at Sentra Pharmacy theSAPCwill pursue decisive regulatory action against those involved,” said Vincent Tlala, Chief Executive of theSouthAfrican Pharmacy Council. Pharmacists and pharmacy-support personnel found selling, compounding or distributing unregistered medicines risk severe disciplinary action and may be removed from theregister. Healthpractitioners have asked patients hoping to use drugs for weight loss to consulttheir doctor. One Worcester doctor said patients had presented withexcessively high testosterone levels, blood-pressure problems and abdominal pains, some requiring hospitalisation. “We advise patients not to use medicines that havenot come through formal channels but were bought online or from someone who was not amedical professional,”the doctor said

Die Langeberg Skaakklub bewysdat skaak meer as net ’n spel is. Dit is ’n instrument om selfvertroue, dissipline en trots onder jongmense in die gemeenskap te kweek. Week na week maak dié klub sy deure oopvir leerders van verskillende skole wat ’n veilige en gestruktureerde ruimte ná skool soek

Om tafelsmet skaakborde leer kinders vaardighede wat hulle ver buite die klaskamer kan gebruik. Hulle beoefen geduldterwyl hulle wag op die regte oomblik om te skuif. Hulle leer fokus, want ’n enkele oomblik se afleiding kan’nhele spel verander. En hulle leer vooruit dink, deur te beplan en die moontlike gevolgevan elke besluit te oorweeg.Vir baie leerders is dit die eerste keer dathulle in ’n omgewing is waar stil konsentrasie en gesonde kompetisie waardeer word.

Ouers en onderwysers hetalopgemerk hoehierdie vaardighede terugspoel in die skoolwerk. Leerderswat gereeld skaak speel, is dikwels meer gefokus tydenslesseenmeer bereidomuitdagende problemeaan te pak. Die klub het ook’nplekgeword waar leerders vanverskillende agtergronde en ouderdommemekaarontmoet. Hier ontstaan vriendskappeoor skoolgrense heen,en ouer spelersneem dit dikwels op hulself om nuwer lede te help en te lei.

“Skaakleer jouomverantwoordelikheid vir jou eie besluite te neem,” sê die voorsitter vandie skaakklub, Michael Edons. “Jy kannie iemand anders blameer as jy ’n fout maak nie. Maar jy leer ookdat elke fout ’n geleentheid is om te verbeter. Daardieingesteldheid help kinders nie net op die skaakbord nie, maar ookindie lewe.”

Dieklubsebenadering is ondersteunendmaargestruktureerd. Beginnerskry tyd om diebasiesereëls en strategieë te bemeester,terwyl leerderswat meer gevorderdis, begeleiwordomhul spel verderteontwikkel.
