Pepe Dass,chair of theSouth AfricanCemeteriesAssociation(SACA), said that while vandalismand theftatcemeteriesare not unusual, they have become more prevalentin recent years. SACA aims to be theleading organisation coordinating thedevelopment of cemetery and crematoria services in SouthAfrica.

Dass said:“Over thelast20years we have seen increasing levels of vandalismand the difficultythatmunicipalitiesfaceinpreventing this.It’scostlytoprovide security at cemeteries.”

He acknowledges that municipalities face shrinkingbudgets,large populationsand rapid urbanisation,makingitdifficult to allocate the proper resources.

“Ifyou look at therevenue that municipalities

receive, it is notsufficienttohandleofall of its functions.”

Dass encourages communities to take ownershipofcemeteriesintheir areasand to establishsafetygroups.

NoticeisherebygiventoallinterestedandaffectedpartiesthatSANParksisdevelopingthemanagement plan for the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area (TMNP MPA) and reviewing the management plan for Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in terms of sections 39, 40 and 41 of the National Environmental Management: ProtectedAreasAct, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003) (NEM: PAA). The purpose of these management plans is to guide the management of the national park and MPAfor the period2027–2036.
