Theduo made thejourney in aReliant Robin, acheap fibreclass carthathas motorcycling ambitions. Thecar is considered iconic in Britain whereitwas produced between 1973 and2002 andwhere it canbedrivenwitha motorcycle licence.

Theprocurement of adeveloper viaaRequestfor Proposals(RFP) is scheduledtobe advertised on Friday 10 April. Theproject also includes strict contract participationgoals to ensure thedirectempowerment of locallabour andSmall Medium andMicro Enterprises (SMMEs)

Locatedata consolidated site bordered by Somerset,Buitengracht, Chiappini, andPrestwich streets, theproject will transformapproximately6700m²ofwell-locatedlandintoa vibranturban hub.

BasZuidberg, CTCRAand NoordhoekRatepayers Association(NRA) chair, said that while theCityhas indicatedanaverage residential property valuationincreaseof17%,feedback from theirmembers suggestssignificantly higher hikesinmanycases

Theassociation, whichrepresentsaround 10%ofresidential properties in Cape Town and accounts forabout 60%ofcollected residential rates, reportsvaluation increasesranging from 25%toashighas140%.

Theupdated rateswillcomeintoeffecton Wednesday1 July.“In most instances, these increaseshavebeen applieddespite therebeing no improvements to thepropertiesconcerned Thesenew valuations will exacerbate theaffordabilitycrisisaffecting Cape Town housing,”he said Objections arecurrently open untilThursday 30 April.

“Unfortunately,rates arenot rising in line with salary growth formostmiddle- andlower-incomehouseholds, placinghomeowners under financialpressure.Althoughhighervaluationsmeanassets areappreciating,itisnot good forthe averagecitizen’s monthlybudget. This addedstrainonhousehold finances will likely affectthe broadereconomy as consumers cutbackonspending,”Bernitz added.

“The CTCRAisofthe view that theCityhas actedirresponsiblybyannouncing significant valuationincreases withoutgivinga complete pictureofthe effectthese will have on municipalbills.The City knew howconcerned ratepayers wouldbeafter last year’s increases, andshouldhaveupdated theMunicipal Rates Calculator simultaneously to show theeffectof thechanges,” he said
