Despite recovering from an illness oneyoung Fish Hoek swimmer persevered andcontributed to the WesternCapecelebrating an emphatic victoryatthe Autumn National School Sports Swimming Championships.

RohinDesai,a learneratFishHoekPrimary School,playedhis part in helpingthe province secure tophonours at thecompetition,held from Friday 24 to Monday 27 Aprilatthe Universityofthe WesternCape(UWC)

Theprovincialteamdelivereda commanding performance, finishingasoverall winners with an impressive 128medalsacrossvarious age groups andevents.

People’s Post spokewithDesai,who said being selected to representhis province wasalready a significant achievement, butbeing part of the winning team made theexperienceevenmore meaningful.“Beingpartofthe winning team made me feel as if Icould rule theworld.I felt so privileged to be selected to join ateamof such greatswimmers,inand outofthe pool.” Behind that moment of pride, however, was ademanding build-up that tested hisphysical andmentalstrength.

Training everyweekday, he focusedparticularlyonthe breaststroke,the discipline in which he hadqualified forSANJ. Thecompetition schedule proved intense. It took placejusta monthbeforeSASchools,followedimmediately by sixdaysofSALifesavingChampionships

As he prepared to return to training afterthis packed period Desaifellill andrequiredantibiotics, asetback that disruptedhis routine. Despitethe interruptionheremainedcommittedtocompeting at hisbest.

Thedisappointmentcould easily have derailed hisperformance forthe remainderofthe championships, butDesai stayed resilient. With guidance from hiscoach he quicklyregrouped andshifted hisfocus to theraces ahead. “I spoketomycoach andgot over theracequickly so Icould focusonmynextevent.”

He believes theWestern Cape team’s success wasrootednot only in talent,but also in a

po antpeopleinyou e, esai said “Theysupported me by giving me inputafter my races, encouragingmeand making sure we were comfortableand caredfor.Myteammates always kept us in thebestofmoods; they had thebestjokes I’ve ever heard.”

At itssimplest, framingisthe processofselecting certainaspects of realityand making them more prominentincommunication,so that aparticularinterpretationis encouraged.The same issuecan thereforeproduce entirely different reactionsdepending on theframe attached to it

In many ways,I wasnot standing as an individual in that moment, butasa reflection of abroader reality, youngSouth Africans navigating politics with adegree of awareness, butwithout consis-

tent spaces that nurture, challenge anddeepen that understanding. Thereiscuriosity,but notalways guidance

Notwhether youngpeoplewill vote,but whethertheyare being prepared to decide

Becausevoting, on itsown,isnot theendpointofdemocracy

It is only meaningful when it is informed.A ballotcastwithout clarityisparticipation in form,but notalwaysinsubstance

We cannotcontinuetomeasure civicengagementpurelyby turnout, whileignoringthe uneven foundation on whichthatparticipation rests.

Politicalunderstanding remains fragmented.Insomespacesitis actively discouraged, treatedas divisive or unnecessary

In others,itisreduced to slogans,party loyalty, or surface-level debatesthatdolittletobuild critical thinking

Theresultisa generation expect-

ed to participateina system they arenot always fully equippedto navigate

This is notanargumentagainst voting.Itisanargumentagainst shallowengagement.

The MetroPolice’santi-hijack unit recoveredtwo stolen vehicles on thesameday in aswift operationon Thursday 16 April.

But whatabout FishHoek?Our beach is one of the bestinthe area,but nothing is done to improve the infrastructure.Wehavebeen told forseveral yearsthat the leasefor the restaurant willbetaken up by winners of auctionbids, but despitetwo auctions some time ago, nothing is happening.
