The City of Cape Town says more than 3600 toiletshavebeen installed across informal settlements since July last year as part of ongoingefforts to improvebasic sanitation.

TheCarbonSmart BeachClean-Upforms part of theCity’sCarbonSmart Skills Development Programme,which aims to integratesustainable construction practiceswithcommunity empowermentthrough theExpandedPublic Worksprogramme Andrewswarnedthatplasticsbreak down into smallerparticles over time andcan enterthe food chain.
“One of themainthemeswas thebioaccumulation of plastics in aquaticenvironments. Small itemslikewrappers left on thebeach break down over time,are eatenbymarinelifeand move up thefood chain, eventually ending up on ourplates,”hesaid.
