Theinaugural meetingofthe Community in Blue (CIB)unitwas convened on Monday,16 February by thePinelands Community Policing Forum(CPF) andSouth AfricanPoliceService at PinelandsPoliceStation
Theinitiativeoperatesasa volunteer extension of police visibility andreports throughthe CPFtoensureoversight andaccountability.
FOURMEMBERSOPERATIONAL
PinelandsPrecinctcurrently hasfouroperational CIBmembers,withplans to increase the number to eightbythe endofMarch this year, accordingtothe CPF.

ResidentsinPinelands were reminded that road safety andcommunity protection requires joint effortduringOperation Shanela II,a targeted safety roadblockheldonTuesday 17 February
Thetwo-houroperation,from10:00 until noon,saw 91 vehicles checkedand 100peoplescreened,resulting in 32 finestotalling R41000.
Theroadblock wasset up on JanSmuts Drive, identified by thepoliceasa hotspotfor traffic violations
“The operationreinforcesthatsafetyisa shared responsibility.Effective resultsare achieved when residents, lawenforcement,and community structures work together,” said Lt ColDarleen Koopman, PinelandsPoliceStation commander
Alongsideenforcement,organisersfocused on prevention throughawareness
Volunteersand officers distributed250 pamphlets covering safe driving, domestic violence support,and safety tips forvulnerablegroups.

OperationShanela II involved an integrated deployment of thepolice, MetroPolice, law enforcement, ADT, andlocal community partners,including thePinelands CPF, Neighbourhood Watch, Community in Blue,and Victim Support
TheCPF ChairMarietta Hopley said active participationfromresidents strengthensprevention.
“Reporting suspicious activity early, supportingvictims,and promotingroadsafetyall contribute to asafer environment,”she said
BUILDINGACULTUREOFCOLLABORATION
Theprecinctcontinues to encourageresidents to participateininitiatives that improveneighbourhood safety,frompatrols andwatches to volunteeringatawareness campaigns.
Accordingtoorganisers, this colaborative policing brings jointplanning,sharedaccountability allowing faster response,better identification of crimehotspots, anda stronger deterrent effect.
