STREET dwellers illegally occupying municipal and public spaces were removed in Newton Park on Thursday July 31

The bylaw enforcement operation, led by the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality’s Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Nompumelelo Mrubata, and the Land Invasion Unit, occurred along Westbourne Road

In a social media statement, the Municipality commented that the operation addressed the growing concern of people, including vulnerable children, occupying public toilets and spaces

“These conditions have led to safety concerns, damaged facilities and disturbances for residents, businesses, and commuters,” the statement read

“This intervention is part of a wider municipal drive to stop the illegal occupation of public spaces, prevent the misuse of essential services, and curb the vandalism of infrastructure ”

The joint operation was aimed at improving the use of municipal resources, reducing vandalism and infrastructure strain, protecting public spaces for community use and the development of longterm solutions to homelessness

“These problems not only put strain on our limited budget but also delay critical service delivery in neighbourhoods that need it most,” the statement continued

The NMB Municipality shared that it is working on a long-term, multi-stakeholder strategy that includes social development partners, law enforcement, and community organisations to address the root causes of homelessness and informal living

Meanwhile, Ward 7 Councillor, Brendon Pegram, shared that street dwellers remain a big concern in the community

“The problems we are facing are that many of the street dwellers are not actually homeless Many times we have taken them home ”

He added that Newton Park has become a place of opportunity for street dwellers because they receive support

“There are many businesses in Newton Park, so you will find street dwellers begging at traffic lights and unfortunately people are still supporting them with money and food ” Efforts to discourage the community

and churches from giving money and food directly to the homeless have, however, been futile

“Since COVID, we have had this massive influx of street dwellers across the metro A year ago, the stats stood at 4000 street dwellers, which includes Kariega,” he added

“It is important to educate the community that they can support shelters instead of giving money and food to the street dwellers Rather give the soup or donations to MES ”

Pegram is once again appealing to the broader community to rather donate food and money to Mould Empower Service (MES), which provides services to the homeless

“I am trying my utmost best by asking people not to support street dwellers because that just keeps them in the area,” he added

Churches have soup kitchens, and then we find street dwellers sleeping outside the church three days in advance, which causes an issue ”

SWIMMMING lessons at the age of three to initially become water safe alongside friends turned into a lifelong passion for Keira van Heerden (17), who recently walked away with nine medals at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships

The teenager represented South Africa at the prestigious RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Swansea, Wales, from July 11 to July 13

Her mother, Hanlie, shared how Keira set multiple new South African records, in the Senior Women’s division, during three days of intense competition, which pushed team South Africa to an overall second place in the team standings

“Sport has given Keira the opportunity to explore the world Despite the demands of training and travel, she is currently completing her matric year with full commitment to her academics,” she said Keira, who is a matric learner at Pearson High School in Summerstrand, was introduced to various sports from a young age, such as ballet, gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline, biathle, triathle, laser run, tetrathlon, fencing, biathlon, swimming and lifesaving

“She has proudly represented Eastern Province in all of these sports and has broken numerous Eastern Province (EP) and South African records in athletics, biathlon, swimming and stillwater lifesaving,” her proud mother beamed

The teenager has also represented South Africa internationally in biathle, triathle, laser run, surf lifesaving, stillwater lifesaving, and swimming

She holds the South African U19 Girls’ Biathlon Record and is also a talented 400m runner, having been coached by Leonardo de Villiers and Jessi Kahn

However, due to the demands of her swimming commitments, she has stepped away from athletics to focus on her primary sport

“Hardworking and humble, Keira makes daily sacrifices often giving up social events to focus on her training, recovery, and studies,” Hanlie shared

With plans to further her education in the United States in 2026, Keira will continue her swimming career with the dream of one day representing Team South Africa at the 2032 Olympic Games

“She also hopes to stay involved in lifesaving and give back to the sports that have shaped her journey,” said Hanlie Training and participating in sport is no easy feat; it takes dedication and support to succeed

“Keira follows a demanding schedule that includes eight swimming sessions and two gym sessions per week, adding up to approximately 13 hours of swimming time,” Hanlie shared

Her training programme is structured

ra peaks at the right time and continues to progress toward her long-term performance goals ”

As parents, seeing their daughter excel in sport has been a rewarding journey, Hanlie added

“Watching Keira grow and succeed in sport has been an emotional and rewarding journey From early mornings and long training days to competing at national and international levels, every moment has been worth it ”

However, the journey hasn’t always been easy with highs and lows and various sacrifices along the way

“Keira has had to make difficult decisions, often saying no to parties, sleepovers and social events to prioritise training, recovery, and academics Balancing her schoolwork, sport, friendships and family life has taken remarkable maturity and commitment,” Hanie shared

“Her achievements reflect her strong work ethic and character As parents, we are incredibly proud not only of what she has achieved, but of who she is becoming ”

According to Hanlie, Keira’s faith gives her the strength to achieve anything she sets her mind and heart on

“Keira has a personal relationship with the Lord and firmly believes that her talents are a gift from him,” said Hanlie

NAACAMShowtobeheldinNelsonMandelaBay

THE countdown has begun to this year’s National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) Show, which for the first time will be taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay from August 13 to August 14

Presented in partnership with the Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC), the event will be hosted at the Boardwalk Hotel ICC in Gqeberha

With over 1,200 visitors expected, the NAACAM SHOW expects to bring together a diverse group of automotive component manufacturers, sector stakeholders and service providers that play a pivotal role in advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration within the local automotive components sector

NAACAM CEO, Renai Moothilal, said the decision to host the event in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) was due to the metro being regarded as an important hub of South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector

"The NMB metro is at the centre of South Africa’s automotive industry Being home to 42% of our members and more than half of the automotive original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in South Africa, it makes sense to celebrate this industry in the province that derives a substantial economic benefit from it in terms of job creation, skills and technology transfer, and related services "

The NAACAM Show is the premier forum for showcasing the breadth and depth of capabilities within the South African automotive component manufacturing sector while exploring global developments influencing the future of the automotive industry

This world-class exhibition is expected to have more than 130 cutting-edge exhibiting brands and affiliated networking and knowledge-sharing events Events over the two days will consist of site tours, a golf day, an industry dinner and a conference featuring international and local speakers who will share

insightful presentations and engaging discussions

Thabo Shenxane, CEO of AIDC Eastern Cape, said the organisation is honoured to support a platform that brings together key stakeholders from across the automotive component manufacturing value chain

"This show is a vital platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and promoting the component value chain Partnering with NAACAM reaffirms our dedication to the development of the component manufacturing sector and the broader automotive ecosystem, and we are pleased to host the event in the Eastern Cape, the heart of the automotive manufacturing sector "

In delivering his State of the Province address earlier this year, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane was clear in his administration’s commitment to manufacturing and excitement for Gqeberha to host the NAACAM SHOW 2025

“This faith not only guides her in competition but also keeps her grounded through the challenges and sacrifices of high-performance sport ”

Keira draws daily inspiration from her favourite Bible verse: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me ” –Philippians 4:13

The teenager is also a member of the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club, where she gives back to the community through voluntary lifesaving duties

With local component manufacturers, sector service providers and support agencies on show, the exhibition promises a dynamic platform for highlighting the scale of the automotive component sector and its supporting ecosystem

The conference will address the critical topics that are shaping the future of a rapidly evolving automotive industry, ranging from global trade, component design, supplier requirements and aftermarket development, to sustainability, mineral beneficiation, transformation and skills development in a digitised era

Attendees will gain invaluable insight from a diverse range of local and international industry leaders, policymakers and experts who will engage in thought-provoking dialogue to advance the sustainable growth of the South African component manufacturing sector

For more information on the conference and exhibition or to book a seat, visit https://naacam.org.za/naacam-show-2025/

State-of-the-artAI,Coding&RoboticsCentreforAstraPrimary

ISUZU Motors South Africa (IMSAf) recently handed over a purpose-built AI, Coding & Robotics Centre to Astra Primary School

The centre, developed in partnership with the implementation partner, Sifiso EdTech, and supported by the LPR Group, underlines IMSAf’s commitment to improve the quality of education and narrow South Africa’s skills gap by aligning learning outcomes with the needs of the future

The initiative is part of IMSAf’s broader mission of aligning classroom learning with the demands of the future workforce This contributes to inclusive, equitable and quality education, while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all

“The handover aligns with our corporate strategy, which identifies education as one of the key focus areas in our societal leadership pillar,” said Celestin Ndhlovu, Executive Vice President: Corporate Services at Isuzu Motors South Africa

“It is aimed at driving meaningful change in communities within which IMSAf operates ”

With a total investment of over R1 2 million, the facility includes robotics kits, laptops, tablets, advanced coding software and a fully customised computer lab designed to give learners early exposure to future-facing technologies

Learners are set to develop foundational skills in robotics, programming, mechanical design, and digital citizenship aligning with global trends in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) education

“Through this project, IMSAf is building a digitally competent generation prepared for the world of technology today and into the future,” said Ndhlovu “As a company that is deeply rooted in Nelson Mandela Bay, we are proud to invest in such a facility that opens new opportunities and helps young learners from communities like Gqeberha become creators, not just consumers of technology ”

The initiative enables schools to deliver the DBE’s CAPS-aligned Coding and Robotics curriculum

It goes beyond providing equipment, offering immersive five-day teacher training workshops, structured lesson plans, assessments, and 12 months of educator support

The centre is the first step in building learners’ confidence in STEM early on, laying a strong foundation for subject choices and skills development as they progress from primary to high school

“The establishment of the AI, Coding & Robotics Centre at Astra Primary is more than a technological upgrade it is an investment in the potential of our learners and the future of our province

“The centre will redefine the learning experience for children, and as the Eastern Cape Department of Education, we are proud to witness a programme that prepares our children to actively participate in a rapidly changing and digitally driven world,” said Lutho Kota, Eastern Cape Education Department Director for e-Teaching and e-Learning

The facility will also be used to host robotics competitions and cod-

ing showcases, promoting learner engagement and community pride

Through its partnership with Sifiso EdTech, IMSAf is working to make this a replicable model for future school rollouts in underserved areas

“At Sifiso EdTech, we believe no child should be left behind in the digital age This centre is not just

about teaching technology It is about supporting young people to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and see themselves as creators of technology opportunities, not just followers

“Together with Isuzu Motors South Africa, we are showing what is possible when we invest in learners and the teachers who guide them, un-

locking potential in classrooms and communities,” concludes Dr Sizwe Nxasana, CEO of Sifiso EdTech Isuzu Motors South Africa also gratefully acknowledges the LPR Group, whose R50,000 contribution towards this project reflects a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities for learners in Gqeberha

At the recent Eskom Expo Young Scientists event, Curro Westbrook was named the number one school in the Eastern Province for 2025, and walked away with six gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze medal Top winners in their categories include Nur’ain Senekal (Grade 9, Computer Sciences and Software Development), Layla Ahmed (Grade 8, Engineering and Top Innovation Award Winner), Tyler van der Nest (Grade 8, Plant Sciences) and Erik Cremer (Grade 8, Plant Sciences). COMPETING against the best dance crews around the world, local dancers from the King Dance Studio earned third place in the Global Dance Supreme

The Gqeberha dance crew walked away with bronze at the biggest dance competition held in Dubai from July 7 to July 12

Despite initial funding challenges, the team were able to showcase their passion and unique dance skills on the world stage

Choreographer and coach, Junior King, explained how funding

came through three weeks before the competition

“At first, we weren’t sure whether we were going to Dubai because we didn’t have the necessary funds, so we didn’t rehearse as much as I would have liked ”

King expressed gratitude for the funding that came through via Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie

“A shout out to Gayton McKenzie and everyone from the Patriotic Alliance, when they came through for us and sponsored the rest of the money we needed ”

The group’s journey to the world finals began with the nationals,

where they won gold in Cape Town earlier this year

“We were the only crew from Gqeberha to qualify,” he shared “We won a gold medal and that is ultimately what qualified us to go to the World Dance Championship in Dubai ”

At the national qualifiers, dance crews needed to be in sync with one another, their routine original, authentic and powerful while also making a statement

“Your facial expression, stage presence and attire were very important,” King added “There are many dance styles they used in the competition, but we used hip

hop and isolation/robotics , which fall under isolation We also did a South African dance style called Amapiano, which I feel set us apart from other dance crews ”

King Dance Studio won Gold at the National Global Dance Supreme held in Cape Town, and in Dubai they walked away with bronze

Originally from Fernwood Park in Bethelsdorp, where he grew up, King’s passion for dance started at the age of 8

“I started dancing at the age of 6 and became a choreographer since the age of 8 and was the leader of my school dance group, the Nappy Boys, at the time,” King recalled

“I’ve been choreographing my twin sisters and have my own group, so it has been more than 20 years ”

King described dancing as a passion he simply fell in love with

“When I grew up, everyone else was playing soccer, rugby or cricket and everyone wanted to play sport,” he shared

“I played sport but never fell in love with it; I never had a passion for it until I found dancing ”

He showcases his talent and passion on TikTok, which “keeps the lights on ”

“Today it is paying all the bills and keeping the lights on, so I invest a lot of time into this one craft ”

His advice to young people with exceptional talent and passion for dance is to never give up

“Many adults are going to tell you that dancing or music is just a hobby and that you need to fo-

cus on getting a 09:00 to 17:00,” he said “When your passion is your job, you will never feel like you’ve worked a day in your life I dance and make music full time; it is, and I absolutely love doing it ” King, however, emphasised the importance of having a solid education while pursuing a passion in dance

“It is very important to have an academic qualification behind your name because anything can happen in the space of dancing

You could break a leg, so you need an education as a backup,” he said

“Work on your passion as hard as you work on your academic studies because your passion can change your life ”

CHILDHOOD best friends, Gregory Rousseau and Wesley Botha, have shared nearly three decades of laughter, resilience, and wild imagination

Their story began in Grade 4 at Herbert Hurd Primary School, where classroom antics and playground games like four-square (“Bambie”), open-gates, and marbles laid the foundation for an enduring bond

Raised in the Gqeberha suburbs of Gelvandale and Sydenham, respectively, Gregory and Wesley came from humble beginnings but they always dreamed of building something bigger than themselves

As millennials, they’re part of a generation shaped by transformation, tech, and nostalgia, now channelling those experiences into a bold vision for the future

Describing themselves as “brothers from another mother and father,” the pair have leaned on each other through life’s challenges

Through the years, they’ve weathered personal loss, including the passing of their mothers, and in Gregory’s case, his father too all powerful influences in their lives Their shared hope is simple:

that their parents would be proud of the legacy they’re now working to create

In 2017, they stumbled into the world of tabletop gaming through friends and pop culture icons like Stranger Things, sparking a passion that would later blossom into something extraordinary

That spark became Geeks X Gamers a pop-up events company rooted in inclusivity, creativity, and community

With their debut event set for August 9, from 09:00 to 23:00 at the Walmer Town Hall, the duo is rallying a network of like-minded enthusiasts who share their love for board games, cosplay, roleplaying, and geek culture

True to their values, Gregory and Wesley are committed to compensating all contributors not just with thanks, but with remuneration because they believe that time and talent deserve recognition Their mission?

“To build a community for all gamers in Gqeberha to enjoy A space where fellow fans can meet up, be themselves, and have fun ”

Record-breakingseasonsetforracingawards

EXPECT some special awards for a special season at this year's East Cape Racing Awards evening

Achievements on the race track during the recently concluded 2024/25 season will be honoured at the awards ceremony on a date soon to be announced

It was an extraordinary season for racing in the province The East Cape made an enormous impact on South African racing with some outstanding performances

Leading the way was the Alan Greeff stable, which won graded races all over the country

Greeff has the three best two-yearold fillies in the country: Golden Palm, Direct Hit, and Anotherdanceforme in his yard

They all won graded races in the same season, something that is very seldom achieved in world racing

Greeff also saddled the East Cape's first Hollywood Durban July runner since 2004 in My Best Shot My Best Shot became the first horse to win all three legs of the East Cape Sophomore Challenge this year

Jockey Richard Fourie made regular trips from Cape Town to the Fairview track in Greenbushes to ride mostly for the Greeff stable

He also had an incredible season, demolishing his own record of 119 for the most wins in a Fairview season Fourie s new record is 139 wins, an astonishing number

It is no surprise then that the Greeff representatives will have their hands full carrying all the silverware back to the stable after the awards evening

Even when one pushes the Greeff heroics aside, there were other wonderful performances which could have made it a special season on its own

Trainers Jacques Strydom and Zietsman Oosthuizen reached exceptional milestones with some of their horses

Strydom broke the Western Cape stranglehold on one of the province's most prestigious races, the Algoa Cup, by winning with Firealley

Before this victory, Surfin' USA was the last local horse to win the Algoa Cup Surfin' USA was also trained by Strydom, which makes Strydom the only local trainer to win the Algoa Cup in 20 years

There was a unique achievement by Oosthuizen with the horse (then) eight-year-old El Romiachi El Romiachi was a winner in his 100th track appearance, not something one witnesses every day

Oosthuizen and El Romiachi took it even further The horse went on to win his next two races, his career runs number 101 and 102!

Early in the season, we also had the first winner of all three legs of the popular East Cape Poly Challenge – the Cape Town visitor King Regent

And don't forget that trainer Gavin Smith also had a brilliant season He saddled 116 winners, one of only three in the country (Justin Snaith and Greeff the others) to pass 100 winners

The next Fairview meeting is this coming Friday on the Polytrack

HENK STEENKAMP

THE magnificent season of the Pearson U/19A rugby teams is just getting better and better

The boys from Summerstrand in Gqeberha achieved another milestone this past weekend with a rare away victory over Marlow Landbou in Nxuba

But what a nail-biter this was! Pearson had to fight hard to win this thrilling contest 2624

They looked completely in control in the first half after leading 12-0 after just eight minutes and extending the lead to 19-0 at half-time

In this half, Pearson, although under pressure at scrum time, used their opportunities to put points on the board They were also very organised in defence and forced the home side into making mistakes

Marlow is known as a team that never gives up and fought back strongly to level the scores at 19-19 with just ten minutes remaining in the contest

Pearson scored the next try, and the conversion made it 2619 Marlow wasn't done yet and came back with a try in the corner, but missed the conversion which would have levelled things up

The winning side has to say a massive thank you to fullback and vice-captain, Denilo Jordaan He scored two absolutely sensational long-distance tries for Pearson

The first one was just one minute into the match, and the second proved to be the winning try in the end

Both teams scored three tries apiece Pearson added three conversions and Marlow two It was the last home match of the year for Grey High at the Kolisi Field this past Saturday, and it was a tough one

They faced the classy Bloemfontein visitors, Grey College, in this annual traditional fixture Grey College won 48-15 after leading 38-0 at half-time Grey College kept up with the clock in the first half, averaging a point a minute by scoring six tries It looked like a really massive score was on the cards but the visitors took their foot off the pedal

In fact, it was a second-half victory for Grey High, scoring three tries against two in this period

Noah Mbizi (wing) helped himself to a brace after centre, Bradley Myburgh (off to the Sharks next year), opened the scoring for the home side Meyer Prinsloo (full-back) and up-front lock, Ed Scorey, were always full of running, and Ed had one of his best matches for Grey High
