JUNIORKING:

Familyseeksanswersmonthafterhisfatalcrash

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

MORE than amonth after the untimely deathofpopular TikTok personality and hip-hop artist Dugulth Ferreira, aka Junior King, his family is calling for answers.

King died in ahead-on collision on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei in the Free State on 11 December.

At the time, acase of culpable homicidewas opened.

The accident left King’s young daughter with severe injuries. Aquilla Frost, the mother of two of King’s children, has expressed deep frustration and heartbreakover what she says has been an absence of feedback from authorities.

“It has been alittle over amonth since the accident that resulted in the death of my children’s fatherand caused severe injuriestomydaughter,”Frost said.

According to Frost, her young daughter sustained bilateral femur fractures and required surgery on both legs. The child also sufferedbroken ribs, which are currently heal-

ingwithout surgical intervention.

Frost shared that the severity of her daughter’sinjuries requires round-the-clock care, forcing her to declinework opportunities in order to carefor both her injured daughter and herson, who she said is traumatisedbythe accident and the loss of hisfather. Shealso claimed alack of communication from the investigatingofficers

“Multiple attemptstoobtain updates from SAPS have yielded no results, leaving us without clarity on thestatus ofthe investigation,”Frost said.

Frost said shewas not seeking special treatment, but accountability and transparency.

“I am asking for answers. Iamasking for accountability. Iamasking for justice —for my children and for their father,” she said Meanwhile, King’s mother,Marian Ferreira, issued astatement on social mediaurging the public to show empathy amid widespread speculation surrounding the accident.

“There have beenmany assumptions made aboutthe accident in

whichmyson lost his life, and his children were injured,”Ferreira said. She explained that Frost’spublic response stemmed fromgrief and emotional pain.

“Asamother, she has to look at her children every day, not only dealing with their physical injuries but also the emotional trauma they carry. Thatkind of pain does not simply go away,” Ferreira said

She added that the family believes certainfactorsleading to the accident could havebeen avoided and that unanswered questions remain

“We know exactly what happened and what should not have happened. We know exactly what was said that could have avoided this accident. Thefamily, therefore, has questions that need answers,” she said.

Commenting on the progress in the case, Free State policespokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel ThaboCovane, said that the investigation was ongoing.

“When Ispoke to the station commander, he indicated that the photo album of the accident scene and

Failuretoact on 2024 maintenance plansblamedfor poweroutages

REPEATED electricity and water outages in Nelson Mandela Bay are the result of maintenance commitments made in 2024 that were not implemented, according to the Nelson Mandela BayBusiness Chamber.

Largeparts of the metro were left without electricity and water for several days this week following the collapse of two 132kV electricity transmissiontowers on the Greenbushes–Bethelsdorp line from the Chatty substation.

The failure disrupted the electricity supply across wide areas of the city, with direct consequences for water provision, households and businesses.

The Business Chamber said the incident follows apattern of infrastructurefailures that should havebeen addressedafter earlier warnings.

In August 2024, high-voltage transmission towers on the Chelsea–Summerstrand–Arlington line collapsed during gale-force winds, leaving areas including Summerstrand and Walmer without power for more than aweek.

Subsequent investigations identified rust and corrosion as the root causes of the failures, with afurther prolongedoutage occurring at the same site in May last year.

“Promises and commitments were made nearly two years ago that damaged infrastructure would be reconstructed and thatpreventative maintenance wouldbecarried out on other pylons and transmissiontow-

ersacross themetro,” saidBusiness Chamberchief executive officer, Denise vanHuyssteen. “Littleprogress appears tohavebeen made in implementing those commitments.”

Van Huyssteen said the Chamber hadrepeatedlyurged the municipalitytorenew critical 132kV maintenancecontracts andwarned of the risks associatedwithneglecting key electricityinfrastructure.

“Wehave consistentlycautioned that thelack of adequate maintenanceand securityofcritical municipal infrastructure placesthe metroathigh risk of prolonged and widespreadoutages,” she said. “That strident wake-up callhas not been heeded.”

Accordingtothe Chamber, the economic impact of the outages has been substantial.

Businesses have experienced lost sales, cancelled bookings, delaysin fulfillingordersand reputational damage, whileresidentsand businesses have incurredadditional costs relatedtospoiledfood, damagedappliancesand the implementation of emergencybackupmeasures.

“For businesses, the costs quickly addupinlost revenueand operational disruptions,” said van Huyssteen.

“For residents, there are direct financial costs, as well as growing frustration at ongoing poor service delivery.”

The Chamber also raised serious safety concerns, particularly for vulnerable residents reliant on electrici-

ty-powered medical equipment.

“Lives are put at risk, especially infants, the elderlyand thosedependent on oxygen suppliesand other life-sustaining devices,” van Huyssteen said. “Darkstreets and non-functioning securitysystems further place livesand propertyin danger.”

Whilethe municipalityhas cited vandalismand strong windsascauses of the latest tower collapses, the Chamber saidtheremustbegreater honesty about contributing factors.

“Lack of maintenance, together withinadequate securityofcritical infrastructure, aremajor contributingfactors,” van Huyssteen said.

“Municipal statements haveconfirmedthat the theftofbolts and steel components weakened the towers, withhigh winds beingthe final trigger. The question that must be asked is whether thissituation could havebeen avoided.”

Van Huyssteen warned that continued delays in implementing maintenance commitments madein2024 aredamaging investor confidence in Nelson MandelaBay.

“It is time to implement comprehensive maintenance plans, renew vital maintenance contracts, ensure effective use of infrastructurebudgets and put robustsecuritymeasures in place,” she said.

“Transparency, accountability and decisive action are essential if the metroistoretainand attract much-needed investment and jobs.”

APARTNERSHIP between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and PRASAisexpected to bring significant investment and new train services to NewBrighton TrainStation, one of the Metro’s busiest rail hubs.

Officials from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and thePassenger RailAgency of South Africa(PRASA) met at NewBrighton Train Station on Friday, 30 January, to discussaccelerating rail service improvements across the Metro

The meeting, which was attended by NMBM’sActing Chief Operating Officer, Nkosana Dunjana, Intergovernmental Relations Director,Lulamile Moolman, and Human Settlements Directorate officials, focused on addressing infrastructurechallenges and enhancing passenger services.

PRASArepresentative Andile Silo expressed the facility’s critical importance to the Metro’s transportnetwork.

“New Brighton Station is amongst the highest revenue-generating stations along the corridor, and PRASAplans to invest significant funding in upgrading thefacility,” Silo stated.

The station upgrades form partofbroader infrastructure improvements that will address longstanding commuter concernsrelating to delays, accessibility challenges and missed trains caused by congestion and infrastructureconstraints

To immediately improve pas-

telephonecalls or visits to theiroffice regardingthismatter.

Important conditionsapplytothe registrationprocess:

1. Assistance to organisations remains subjecttofunding availability

2. Registration on thedatabasedoesnot guarantee assistance

3. The invitation excludes beneficiaries alreadylistedontheir database

All submissions mustbee-mailed to sandya@cchestpe.org.za and must reach theorganisation on or before theend of February 2026.

senger experience, PRASAhas reportedly adjusted operations to allow trains to remainstationary for approximately five minutes at NewBrighton Station duringpeak periods, giving passengerssufficient time to board.

Silo acknowledged that rail infrastructurehas deteriorated but stressed that the focus is now on implementing solutions rather than dwelling on past challenges.

“Our rail infrastructurehas deteriorated; however, weare where we aretoday, and instead of focusing on the past, our priority is to turn the situation around and implement solutions,” he stated.

As partofthe service enhancement plans, PRASAconfirmed that an additional train service will be introduced on 12 and 13 February.

Theagency is also planning to introduce improved midday transportservices in response to requests from studentsand elderly residents.

“Thereisstrong demand from studentsfor amidday train service, and we aretherefore planning to launch an off-peak train that will primarily serve university studentsand elderly citizens who need to travel to town and back,” Siloadded.

Meanwhile, Dunjana expressed the broader significance of the NewBrighton Station upgrades in restoringrailasasafe, affordable and reliable mode of transportfor residents

ToplocaltrainersprepareforGuineasmeeting

THE top Fairview trainers,Alan Greeff and Dean Smith, are once again showing they are not afraid to travel withtheir best horsesto take on the rest of the country.

They will represent the Eastern Cape at Saturday’s prestigious Guineas meeting at Turffonteinin Johannesburg.

Smith trains All Systems Go, that is the only visiting horse prepared to take his place in the R1 million Gauteng Guineas over 1600m.

One of the biggest stars in the Greeff stable, Golden Palm, runs in the R750 000 Gauteng FilliesGuineasover 1600m.

The East Cape racing public loves to support the Fairview horses when they travel to the otherracing centres.

It is achallengingand expensive exercise tohit the roadfromGqeberha withthe horses. The trainers whoare preparedtodothat deserve all the supportfrom their home province

The Hear The Drums Room on the first floor at Fairview will be open from early on Saturday. Local racingfansare invited to followthe Guineasmeeting andsupport the Greeff andSmith horses.

The totalisator will be operating so punters can place all their bets. The barand kitchen (for those famous curry dishes) willalso be open.

Thispast weekend, the Western Cape Stayersrace over 2800m in Cape Townunderlined just how difficult it is for the Fairview horses to produce top performances after travelling

Zatara Magic (Smith) and Bournemouth (Greeff) weren’t at their best, but will be back to fight another day.

The Fairview meeting thiscoming Fridaywill start with aJuvenile Plate forfillies. The recent Fairview Juvenile races havebeen very exciting and we should see another interesting start to the day.

Last Friday’s Fairview meeting was ared-letter dayfor trainer Kelly Mitchley. The Mitchley stable won two of the three features on the day.

Both winners, Bad Medicine and Roman Agent, were ridden to victory by Muzi Yeni and areowned by Mervin Govender.

Bad Medicine wonthe Lakeside Handicap by two lengths. He was way too good forthe opposition

over the 2400m.

Mitchley saddled the Exacta in the Fairview Merchants to make the feature double even morespecial.

Roman Agent and Yeni had to work veryhardtoget the better of stablemate Anuschka’s World, which had Luyolo Mxothwa in the irons.

Mxothwa had hismoment in the sun earlier in the day in the other feature race, TheFairviewMile, when Zinovi produced aclassy performance for the Greeff stable.

Zinovi carriedthe top weight of 62.5kg to asolidvictory over the 1600m. Mxothwa was hugely impressed with the five-year-old gelding’sperformance.
