FAMILIES in Motherwell who lost their homes in fires over the festive seasonreceived building materials fromthe NelsonMandela Bay Municipality(NMBM) on Wednesday, 21 January.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management unit, together with Ward 57 Councillor Zanele Boyana, and in partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), delivered temporary housing materials to 10 families in Motherwell.

The fire left families, including children, elderly residents and othervulnerable community members, without shelter, posses-

sions and basic necessities. Meanwhile, multiple fires have raged relentlessly acrossthe metro throughoutJanuary, leaving trails of devastation.

On Thursday, 8January, afire threatened the Animal Welfare SocietyPEshelter, while later thatevening aseparate fire claimedthe lifeofone of the organisation’s workers

Two days later, on 11 January, the Municipality’s Fire and EmergencyDepartment warned the publicabout awildfire at Wedgewood Golf Estate and near theN2WindFarm.

Later, an emergency notice issuedon13January alerted residents to vegetation fires in several areas across the Metro,

including Windomayne Road, Stone Hedge in Beverly Grove, Victoria Drive and Happy Valley.

In astatement on 14 January, the Municipality said Fire and Emergency Serviceshad been workingnon-stop to combat veld firesacrossthe Metro, withcommunity safety as thetop priority. Meanwhile, aschool wasevacuated on Thursday 22 January due to abushfire duringstrong winds

WITH combined dam levels at 46.62% and usable water at 37.64%, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has called for urgentwater conservationamid worsening drought conditions.

Accordingtodata releasedon Monday, 26 January, combined dam storage has declined to 46.62%, with only 37.63% of usable water remaining once dead storage is taken into account.

The municipalityhas warned that without immediatereductions in consumption, stricter water restrictions and possible supply interruptions may become unavoidable.

Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe shared thatthe Metro continues to experienceaclimate-driven drought. She conducted asite visit to Impofu Dam on Tuesday, 20 January.

“As we call on residents and businesses to reduce water usage, the Municipalitymust also demonstrate accountability. Ihave instructed the CityManager toprioritise the repair of water leaks as amatter of urgency. Aturnaround plan hasbeen developed, and procurement processes are being accelerated to improve responsetimes,”she said.

Basedoncurrent consumption trends and in the absenceofsignificant rainfall, Nelson Mandela Bay

is estimated to have approximately 236 days of water supply remaining, althoughthis projection maychange depending on rainfall, consumer behaviour andoperationalconditions.

AlthoughGroendal Damremainsrelatively stable, it is the second-smallest dam in the system, with acapacityof11,638 megalitres, limiting its ability to offset declining levels in larger dams.

Themunicipality said water consumptionremainsamajor concern, with current usage averagingapproximately 331 megalitres per day, significantly exceeding the City’s target of below 280 megalitres per day. The situation is further complicat-

ed by abstraction restrictions imposed by theNational Department of Water and Sanitation, which came into effect on 1November 2025.

These include a25% restriction on the Kromme sub-system, which includes Churchilland Impofu dams, anda10% restriction on theKouga sub-system, comprising Kougaand Loerie dams.

According to themunicipality, poor rainfallhas worsened thewater shortage, with 2025 recorded as oneofthe lowest rainfallyears of the past decade, particularly at Churchill Dam. Only 2019 recorded lower rainfall levels, and precipitation remained consistently below thelongtermaverage throughout 2025, with no recovery laterinthe year. Whilst thedrought has not yet been declared alocal disaster under theDisaster Management Act,2002, themunicipality said it is actively managing drought-related risks in linewith its legislative obligations under theDisaster Management Act,the Water Services Act and applicable municipal by-laws. Residents are urged to immediatelyreduce householdwater use by takingshorter showers, reusing waterwhere possible, limiting lawn watering, and reducing car washing. Water leakscan be reported via themunicipality’s 24-hour hotline on 0800 20 50 50 or by emailing waterleaks@mandelametro.gov.za

THE controversy surrounding the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s animal poundintensified last weekfollowingconfirmation thatanew serviceprovider has assumed responsibilityfor the facility

In astatement,Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Health,Councillor Thsonono Buyeye, said the municipalanimal pound is open and ready to receive animals after an assessment of the facility and engagements with the newly appointedservice provider.

Buyeye shared thatthe service provider was appointed in the first weekofJanuary 2026, following what he described as athorough and compliant SupplyChain Management process in line with applicable regulations. He added that engagements with the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services to upgrade the pound and establisha fully functional animal clinic at the facility are at an advanced stage.

that the municipality is not legally obligated to renew contracts, citing government procurement regulations.

“The completion of an open, fair, transparent and competitive bidding processhas resulted in the appointment of anew serviceprovider, signalling anew era,” said Buyeye. He added that officials had briefed him on the experience of the new provider, which he said broughtreassurance regarding the quality of services to be rendered.

Buyeye said that the operation of the municipal pound would improve road safety and reduce health risks associated with roaming animals.Henoted that uncontrolled animal movement can result in accidents and diseaseoutbreaks, and that the municipality has aresponsibility to care for vulnerableanimals.

However, the SPCAUitenhage &District has expressed serious concern over the municipality’s decision not to renewits contract.

THE Association for the PhysicallyDisabled(APD) is breathing new life into the Bay’s textile manufacturing sector while creating employment opportunities for bothable-bodied and disabled individuals.

After 18 years of operating amanufacturing space at its North End premises, the non-profit organisation(NPO) has expanded with anew high-capacity textile facility.

APD Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Director,Cecilia Fourie, highlighted the decline of textile factoriesinthe region and stressed the importance of passing on sewing and needlework skillstofuture generations.

Last year, the APD secured the National Casual Daymerchandise contract, producing 47,000 T-shirts and30,000 caps

Allitems were assembled, printed, packagedand dispatched withinthree months, demonstrating the facility’sefficiency.

“The factory embodies APD’smission of maintaining a50/50 disability-to-able-bodied workforce ratio,” said Fourie. “The facilityproduces arange of products, including PPE workwear, school uniforms, corporate jackets, golf shirts, T-shirts and retailgarments, working on orders received from clients while ensuring quality output.”

The main purpose of the new facility is to create sustainableemployment,startingwith60staff members and 17 trainees, withagoal of reaching 200 jobs within one to two years.

With plans for asecond factory, APD projects employing around 300 people over thenext threeyears.

“We are reviving the textile industry, and the retailsectorwantstosupport local,” Fourie shared

Last year, the NPO celebrated 85 years since its foundingwith thelaunchoftwo legacy projects, including the Motherwell DisabilityHub, aimed at empowering the community through skills training, support services and sustainable opportunities.

Bernadette Mattheus, atrainer at the facility, said it was rewarding to see the growthinyoungpeople: “Iwas given the opportunitytotrain youngpeople, which Ilove. It’s incrediblyrewarding tosee how they growand progress from where they started.”

Clinton Kay-Clark,Head of Manufactur-

ing, shared the vision for the new facility withthe PE Express.

“Myrelationshipwith APD dates back to2020, when Iwas head of manufacturing at Prestige Clothing, which is part of TFG,” he explained Kay-Clark, who started working at APD inFebruarylast year, explained that assembling ateam was the priority.

“We brought in young graduates and someoneexperienced in garment construction to workwith bothdisabled and able-bodied individuals. We moved in by July, trained staffand purchased new equipment, and TFG has now givenus ourfirst fiveorders.

“Wehavea multi-business approach and actually manufacture PPE for the agricultural sector, as well as other corporatess, and we have the pageant component. To have all that multifacility that started a year ago, it is phenomenal what we have achieved in such ashortperiod of time.”

FairviewFridaypromises action-packedafternoon

MANYofthe best older horsesin the EasternCapewill be in action in three featureraces which form part of Friday’s bumper meeting at the Fairviewtrack in Greenbushes.

The features over different distances will cater for every racing fan, but the babies are not forgotten.

The two-year-olds will get the meetingstarted. The Juveniles have already shown what they are capable of this season, and an exciting starttothe afternoon is guaranteed.

Those who feel the need forspeed will be lookingforward to the FairviewMerchants.Top sprinterswill takeeach other on over 1200m, and anail-biting finish is on the cards.

The horses suited to 1600m racesget theirchance to shine in the Fairview Mile. This is always ahighly contested affair, and some tough old campaigners will be readytofight it out for the victory.

TheLakesideHandicap is run over 2400m, whichmeans your horse hasto be fit, very fit, to win. Bournemouth, from the stable of champion trainer Alan Greeff, has won this race in thepast twoyears.Heisthe reigning Champion Stayer (long distances) in the province, which proves that plenty of staminais needed to succeed in this one.

Bournemouth will not be goingfor the hat-trick, butwill be in action at oneof the biggest meetings of the year on Satur-

day at KenilworthinCape Town.

TheR5million WSB Cape Town Met is the headliner, but Bournemouth is oneof two EastCape champions who will run in the R500,000Western Cape Stayers.

ZataraMagic from the Dean Smith stable will also contest this race over 2800m It is asmall but strong field of eighthorses which will face the starter at 13:00.

ZataraMagic is aformer East Cape Champion Stayer and is enjoying a wonderful season in whichhehas won the Algoa Cup and the Fairview 1900. It should bevery interesting to see how the two Gqeberhahorses do against the top opposition

HoldingThumbs fromthe Glen Kotzen stable isthe overwhelming favourite to win the race. The Zatara Magic fan club will pointout that their chargehas beaten Holding Thumbs in the AlgoaCup and can do it again.

Zatara Magic will be ridden by Craig Zackey, and Calvin Habib is Bournemouth’s jockey.

Trainer Jacques Strydomhas invited the racing public to gather at Fairview on Saturday in the Hear TheDrumsRoom to support thelocal horses.

“Thetotalisator will be open forthose who wantto take abet. There will be food and bar facilities, and all the races on the day can be followed,”Strydom said.

The Cape Town meeting starts at 11:50 with the first of 12 races. The Met is race 8at16:05.
