THE National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued urgent recall notices for thousands of vehicles across South Africa, affecting popular models from Ford, Nissan, and Citroen manufactured between 2009 and 2025
The recalls, announced on Tuesday, 19 August, highlight serious safety defects that could lead to accidents, injuries, or even death if left unaddressed Among the manufacturers, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa is dealing with three separate recall campaigns affecting some of its most popular models
In the most widespread recall, 2021 to 2025 model vehicles, the Mustang, Everest, Ranger, and Transit Custom vehicles are being recalled for faulty infotainment systems that freeze
and display black screens This critical safety concern arises when the rear-view camera becomes frozen, missing, or delayed during reversing manoeuvres, potentially creating false images of the vehicle's surroundings
A second Ford recall affects 2019 to 2023 Mustang, Everest, Ranger, and EcoSport models with SYNC system errors Repeated short ignition cycles can cause system instability, resulting in blank rear-view camera displays or images that remain frozen after reversing has ended
Another concerning recall is that of the 2025 Ford Ranger Wildtrak vehicles, where transmission defects may cause vehicles to move forward unexpectedly while in reverse or neutral gear Drivers may also experience
complete loss of reverse motion when the gear selector is in reverse position Meanwhile, Nissan has recalled its Qashqai model vehicles sold between September 2021 and April 2024
According to the NCC the vehicles reportedly have incorrectly assembled battery harness connections In those cases, the loose retaining nuts may cause significant resistance increases under specific driving conditions, potentially leading to dangerous heat buildup in extreme cases However, the most serious recall involves the Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 vehicles sold between 2009 and 2016 Stellantis South Africa has identified a critical flaw where driver airbag inflators may rupture during deployment, potentially releasing metal fragments into the vehicle cabin
"This could cause metal fragments to be released into the vehicle cabin, posing a serious risk of injury or even death to the driver and passengers," the NCC statement warned Vehicle owners are urged to take immediate action by contacting their nearest authorised dealership to arrange recall repairs All recall work is typically performed free of charge to consumers
The NCC emphasises that continuing to drive affected vehicles without addressing these defects significantly increases the risk of accidents and injuries
Vehicle owners can verify if their specific vehicle is affected by contacting their authorised dealership with their vehicle identification number (VIN)
THE felling of two pine trees in Lorraine has reignited residents' concerns about developers prioritising housing over environmental protection
Local resident, Samantha Barnes, shared her disappointment and dismay when she came across two "well-established" Pine trees cut down earlier this month
"Lorraine used to be so pretty with all the trees," she mused "I take a long walk every day and we as residents are so sad about these trees; it has been going on for decades "
Barnes, who lives in a townhouse complex, says she is not against housing developments, but it was worrying that the natural habitat of birds and other wildlife was slowly being removed
"The Pine trees were healthy; they supported bird life, insects and other life," she added "When they build new housing developments, they cut off all the trees and it is just wrong " Barnes said she has memories of trees

lining the streets of Lorraine but sadly they had changed drastically
"There used to be a row of 20 pine trees off Longwy Road that were cut down," she shared "I'm not opposed to new developments, but developers need to consider the broader impact "
She is hoping for more environmental awareness
"I am greatly saddened that every open space is steadily being filled up with townhouse developments What especially disturbs me is that established trees are cut down and destroyed " Ward 8 Councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, explained that in the case of private property, developers had the right to build
"When it s private property, like in this case, and many other cases, an application for the development is submitted to the Municipality and if there is rezoning involved, the municipality informs my office as the ward councillor and then I discuss it with my ward committee," he
explained
He further explained that before developing a townhouse complex development is approved, an environmental impact assessment is done
“The developer approaches the environment services organisation that does the inspections; then the developer has the right to proceed and cut down the trees When it comes to the trees here (in Lorraine) there are mostly alien trees such as Bluegum, Pine trees and Port Jacksons ”
When it comes to protected trees, however, it is highly unlikely the trees would be removed
"I had a case where a Yellowwood tree
a protected tree - on a verge in front of a house needed to be trimmed," he continued
"This person asked permission from the Municipality to trim it and the Municipality responded that it was not within their mandate So he had to approach
cause Ward 8 has a very high-water table " He explained how trees helped to absorb water which minimises flooding during winter rains
"What happens with heavy rain is that the water doesn't sink into the ground, which then causes flooding," he shared "In those instances, the trees help in our area "
To ensure that Lorraine remains a "leafy suburb" and does not turn into a "concrete jungle" counteracting the impact of the thousands of trees removed, Rautenbach started an environmental project to plant trees
"In Ward 8, there are around 123 townhouse complexes, so all those trees were
removed, especially the Bluegum and Pine trees; hence, I have started the Go Green project "
According to Rautenbach, over 2000 indigenous trees have been planted with the assistance of the Parks Department and local residents since the launch of the project in 2008
"The Parks Department provides the trees, digs the hole and then I invite residents and organisations such as schools to plant the trees," he shared
"Residents have to apply to plant trees on verges, on condition, that they take care of the tree for two years, watering it and keeping it clean
"I don't want to see Ward 8 change into a concrete jungle "
THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) has secured another major sporting coup for the Eastern Cape, with the DHL Stormers set to return to Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for a high-stakes Investec Champions Cup clash on 13 December
The Cape Town-based franchise will face French powerhouse, Stade Rochelais, in a Round Two fixture, marking the second consecutive season that Gqeberha has hosted European rugby's premier competition With DHL Stadium in Cape Town unavailable due to a scheduling conflict with the World Supercross Championship, the Nelson Mandela Bay venue has once again stepped up as the Stormers' alternative home ground
The announcement comes as welcome news for the city's economy, with last year's Champions Cup fixture between the Stormers and RC Toulon generating significant financial returns The December 2024 event attracted 31,000 spectators and injected R8 2 million into the broader city economy, while creating over 1,000 temporary employment opportunities
MBDA CEO, Anele Qaba, said the return of top-tier rugby validates the city's credentials as a world-class sporting destination
"Last year, the Stormers spoke of the incredible support they received from the people of Gqeberha and the high standards delivered by our stadium team," Qaba explained "That feedback stayed with us It affirmed
that Nelson Mandela Bay is not just viable as an alternative venue, but it is a preferred one "
The venue's reputation has been further enhanced by recent high-profile events, including hosting the Springboks in July Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Executive, Raaziq Poole, highlighted the positive feedback from international visitors
"We received glowing reviews from the RC Toulon staff and management contingent They complimented the pristine pitch conditions of the stadium, cleanliness, operational staff professionalism, and our city's friendly atmosphere," Poole said
The stadium generated direct revenue of just under R5 million through kiosk and bar sales, VIP suites, and ticketing income during the 2024
event Beyond the immediate financial benefits, Qaba emphasised the event's wider economic ripple effects throughout the region
"Events like these bring visitors into the city, fill our hotels and restaurants, and create temporary work opportunities," he said "There are tangible benefits for our residents and local businesses "
The temporary employment created by last year's event spanned multiple sectors, including security, cleaning, medical services, and concessions The MBDA also utilised the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) to source hospitality staff for the event
As an agency of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the MBDA continues to focus on activating the
North End and Stadium precinct as an economic catalyst for the region
"The MBDA continues to operate according to its mandate, delivering results for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay through strategic partnerships, efficient operations and a commitment to inclusive growth," Qaba concluded
Tickets for the December 13 fixture between the DHL Stormers and Stade Rochelais will go on sale in October
The match represents another milestone in Gqeberha's growing reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events, building on the success of previous international fixtures and cementing the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium's status as a national sporting asset

SEPTEMBER promises to be a blockbuster month for local horse racing with six meetings, which include three eagerly awaited feature races
To make it an even more memorable month, the East Cape 2025 Awards evening will also take place in the Bold Silvano Room at the Fairview racecourse in Greenbushes on Saturday, 6 September
The action will start with the first of the six meetings this coming Monday on the Fairview Turf track
The three features lined up for September are the Speedsters Stakes over 1000m (5th), the Friendly City Stakes over 1800m (19th) and the second leg of the East Cape Poly Challenge over 1400m on the 26th
Already, racing fans are discussing what is going to happen in the Speedsters Stakes, after the entries for this sprint race became known
All three horses nominated to be crowned as the Champion Sprinter at the Awards evening, Fairy Knight, Cruise Control and King-
dundee, have been entered for this race
If all three take their places in the Speedsters Stakes a day before the Champion Sprinter is announced, it will indeed be a race worth watching
The outcome of the race will, of course, have no effect on this years awards, but will come into play for the current season which started at the beginning of the month
There is also excitement about the second leg of the popular Poly Challenge after Mercantour won the first leg over 1200m at this past Fridays meeting
The Poly Challenge is known for its nail-biting finishes, and this race was no exception It was a fantastic race for champion trainer, Alan Greeff, who saddled the Exacta Mercantour won it for Greeff with S'manga Khumalo in the saddle, just getting to the winning post in time ahead of the fast-finishing stablemate Fairy Knight
It is safe to predict that we will
have another close finish in the second leg of the Challenge Mercantour and Fairy Knight won't have any problems stepping up to 1400m, and it would be great to see them back for the second leg
The stables of Greeff and Kelly Mitchley dominated last Friday's meeting with three winners apiece Greeff also dominated the nominations for the Awards evening It will be no surprise if the Greeff stable walks away with most of the trophies at the awards
The most prestigious award on which the judges must decide is that of Horse of the Season Henk Steenkamp is again the convenor of the judging panel, assisted by Nico Kritsiotis and Neil Pretorius
