WHEN it comes to clearing invasive plants in the city and creating space for indigenous fynbos-type vegetation to thrive, you need not only knowledgeable specialists but also, more importantly, people who love the beauty and sustainability of native flora – people willing to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work themselves

Although the clearing of alien plants has been planned for some time, there has been renewed focus in recent years

Fortunately for Nelson Mandela Bay, multidisciplinary teams are working hand in hand with communities, forming groups of committed individuals who come armed with garden gloves, loppers and saws, making a continuous effort to restore and maintain the balance of our biomes one plant at a time

With the help of experts in conservation ecology, willing volunteers are guided on how to tackle invasive plants to ensure the restoration and long-term sustainability of the area’s biodiversity

IPAN (Invasion Plant Action Network) is an information campaign, started simultaneously in Wards 3 and 6, providing residents with practical advice and support, as sustainability starts with awareness and community-driven action

The Green Baakens Initiative focuses on revitalising and protecting the Baakens Valley for future generations, while encouraging learning opportunities about both indigenous and invasive fauna and flora

The Baakens River Valley encompasses approximately 500 hectares of public open space, with the 23km Baakens River flowing through the city Often described as our city’s “green lung” or “green corridor,” the valley highlights the importance of conserving our natural heritage and

its significant location

The Green Baakens Initiative and WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) currently run various small projects within the Klein Kabega tributary, which flows into the Baakens River Reinier van der Kuip, the driving force behind this campaign, uses his expert mapping skills and, through tireless efforts, identifies and monitors biodiversity’s greatest threats

Invasive plants suffocate indigenous flora, disrupt water flow and increase fire and erosion risks, transforming whole landscapes

Education is therefore crucial

Clearing dense patches of Port Jackson Willow, for example, is hard work due to its aggressive growth and regrowth It must be completely uprooted or treated with herbicide after cutting close to the ground Because its

long-lasting seedbank responds to fire, follow-ups and maintenance are essential – fires even offer a window of opportunity for effective control

Invasive Eucalyptus Bluegum trees have massive root networks that send up shoots after being felled unless treated with herbicide

Growing as much as 2m per year, these oncesmall seedlings can become large, water-consuming giants that outcompete indigenous plants

Biological control agents – a natural enemy of the invasive plant, such as fungi or bacteria – are sometimes introduced to curb invasive growth without harming native flora, helping with long-term, cost-effective control However, these organisms cannot remove all invasives, so human help remains essential

Gisela Bräuer, who has been wholehearted-

ly involved in alien plant clearing in Nelson Mandela Bay, comments: “For me personally, the most important part of the work is to educate and inform people about invasive plants, to understand the necessity of restoring indigenous environments and the fun and loving aspect at the heart of it Everybody can work towards maintaining a smaller area, ensuring local vegetation has a chance to re-establish itself and support biodiversity sustainably People also need to dispose of garden waste responsibly, as many exotic plants spread when garden waste is fly-tipped ” Clear legislation and by-laws exist prohibiting the fly-tipping of garden waste

Gisela’s involvement began in 2017, when she worked monthly for four years with WESSA to eradicate Rooikrans, a threat to the sensitive indigenous bush in the Sardinia Bay Conservancy In 2023, she held the Invasive Plant Clearing portfolio at WESSA together with Mervyn Brouard, whose experience and networks play a key role Having started with no prior background, Gisela now feels that she has learnt and continues to gain valuable knowledge and skills

Collaborative efforts throughout our bay aim to save our natural heritage by allowing native flora to grow unhindered in its natural environment, showcasing its indigenous beauty, enabling wildlife to flourish in its natural habitat and bringing communities together Nevertheless, more help is always needed For more information on Wards 3 and 6’s campaign and to receive informative flyers containing information on invasive plants and how to eradicate them, contact Noreen Burton on 083 277 8269; contact Gisela Bräuer on 073 124 2045 to actively become involved; or visit the Instagram page @green baakens initiative, where Reinier Van der Kuip shares findings, information and strategies, encouraging people to learn and get involved

WITH soil-stained hands community members gathered on Friday, 21 November, to transform a green space in LeMorne Street into a symbol of environmental renewal with a tree-planting ceremony

For Ward 8 Councillor Gustav Rautenbach, the tree-planting ceremony was the continuation of a 17year passion that has already seen over 2,000 trees planted throughout the suburb since 2008

“We are here today alongside the stream at LeMorne Street,” explained Rautenbach, gesturing towards the planned route extending to Circular Drive “The trees will be planted on both sides of the stream, running all the way through to Circular Drive This is the first phase of the 50 trees we are planning to plant ”

All indigenous trees, such as White Ironwood, White Plum and Tree Histeria, will provide shade and joy for generations to come

“In 2008, due to the extensive townhouse development, many trees disappeared because they were on private land,” Rautenbach shared “These included blue gum trees and pine trees that were highly valued,” he reflected

But the tree-planting initiative is about more than just replacing what was lost during urban development

“Lorraine has always been known as a leafy suburb, and I have made it my passion to bring the trees back to the area because they beau-

tify the area And trees are a vital sign of life,” Rautenbach explained The environmental benefits extend far beyond aesthetics With the area’s high water table, these indigenous trees serve a crucial ecological function whilst simultaneously restoring the wildlife corridors that once made Lorraine special

“The trees bring back our wildlife such as otters and birds,” Rautenbach continued “You’ll notice these days there are many guinea fowl running around here, and that’s what Lorraine was known for It simply brings something special to a community ”

Peter Graham, Chairman of the Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch,

brought a refreshingly honest perspective to the morning’s activities

Despite admitting he has “absolutely no green fingers,” Graham found himself wielding a spade with enthusiasm

“We are here on behalf of Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch, supporting our Ward Councillor and

his tree planting ceremony,” Graham explained “And my team are the ones who look after the neighbourhood at night and keep our crime as low as possible And we are very proud to say that Lorraine’s crime is the lowest in the metro ”

The connection between community safety and environmental stewardship wasn’t lost on Graham, who works hand-in-hand with the Walmer police also present at the ceremony

“I’ve been pulled into planting trees, and I hope these trees will outgrow me,” he chuckled

Simoné Appolis from Rise and Create shared her promise, as part of the youth, to continue the legacy of protecting the environment

“As a young person, I realise that the choices we make today will shape the world our children inherit,” she shared

“Planting these trees is more than just an activity; it’s a promise A promise that we are willing to do the small things that lead to big change That we will take responsibility for protecting our environment and that we care enough to leave behind a future that is better than the one we found ”

The trees planted on Friday will take two years to become fully established

“Today we have community members, Walmer police, the Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch, Ward 8 committee and our greatest thanks goes to the Parks Department for providing the trees,” Rautenbach concluded

Petitionforspeedhumpson‘highwaytohell’

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

THE tragic death of an elderly pedestrian has reignited community demands for urgent safety measures on a notorious stretch of road in Central

On 8 October, Nicholas Nel died after a vehicle struck him in Western Road, dubbed the “highway to hell” In honour of his memory and to call for safer streets, Ward 5 Councillor Terri Stander laid flowers at the accident site on Tuesday, 18 November

“An elderly gentleman tragically lost his life while crossing Western Road, directly in front of Cuyler Homes,” she shared

Stander has dubbed Western Road the “highway to hell” due to the alleged speeding and traffic infringements occurring in the street Nel, who lived at Cuyler Homes old-age home, was one of many elderly residents who regularly cross the street to run errands or visit the nearby shops

which is dangerous Education around pedestrian crossings is essential, specifically for Western Road There need to be stop streets or traffic lights on all four corners ”

She pointed out that the intersection was especially dangerous and challenging for the elderly

“There are also complaints of people not adhering to stop streets, motorists who are disregarding pedestrian crossings and inadequate enforcement across the ward ”

Stander further led a petition to be handed to the Roads Department for speed hump consideration “My community has asked for these speed humps ”

According to Stander, speed humps cost in the range of R75,000 each

Last week, Stander gathered with local residents to petition for speed bumps to make Western Road safer for elderly residents, students and all pedestrians to cross

“On the Cuyler Homes side of Western Road there is no stop street and no traffic lights, only a yield sign,” Stander explained “On the other side of Western Road, there are two traffic

Stander explained that Nel, who struggled to walk, was allegedly walking slowly as he tried to cross the street “He tried to cross the road and a car came from the High Court side, and unfortunately, he was hit,” said Stander “He was bleeding from his head and his ears and was taken away by ambulance, but sadly passed away ”

lights and a pedestrian crossing, and the complaints are that when the pedestrian button is pushed, a red-light flash, but it’s still not making cars stop ”

She added that there was a general disregard across the country when it comes to pedestrian crossings, where motorists believe they have the right of way “Pedestrians often also don’t know how to use a pedestrian crossing,” says Stander “They are crossing all over the place,

Retro fundraiser to support Zachary Francis

A FUNDRAISING event is set to take place this month to support 22-year-old Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student, Zachary Francis, who is battling aplastic anaemia whilst searching for a life-saving stem cell donor

The Old School Retro Event will be held at The Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club on Friday, 29 November, from 17:00, featuring entertainment from Gqeberha's Old School DJs The eve-

ning aims to raise funds to help cover Zachary's mounting medical expenses

Zachary, a Bachelor of Education Foundation Phase student, was diagnosed with the rare blood disorder earlier this year after a routine doctor's visit revealed unusually low blood pressure Aplastic anaemia affects just two to seven people per million annually and occurs when the body stops producing sufficient blood cells

Despite having medical aid, the family faces significant out-of-pocket expenses, with treat-

ments costing nearly R400,000 in recent months "His savings are depleted, and we have to make 20% co-payments for medication and doctor's visits now," explained Zachary's father, Marlon Francis

Zachary urgently requires a stem cell donor, but none of his family members are a suitable match According to DKMS Africa, only 0 36% of South Africans are registered as potential stem cell donors, making it challenging for patients from certain ethnic groups to find matches

For event details, contact Tammy on 081 2111 321 Those interested in registering as stem cell

“It is important for residents to know that if they want a speed hump in their street, they need at least 50 per cent of signatures from the residents living in the road to be handed to the Roads Department ”

Stander has, in the meantime requested that traffic officials conduct monitoring and enforcement along Western Road Meanwhile, the Electricity & Energy Department has been asked to repair the pedestrian crossing signals, as the stop light and pushbuttons are currently faulty

Residents joined Ward 5 Councillor Terri Stander

SolardonationtransformsMotherwellschool’seducation

A BRIGHTER, more reliable future has dawned for Elundini Primary School in Motherwell with the handover of a new solar-powered learning container, donated by Engen through its long-standing partnership with the Mark Headbush Foundation (MHF)

The 15kW portable solar container – designed and delivered by Engen Business & Energy Solutions (EBES) and implemented by the EBES Engineering team – will provide the school with a dedicated power supply to support robotics and STEM studies

As a standalone energy solution equipped with an integrated UPS unit, the container ensures uninterrupted electricity for the learning activities conducted inside it

Principal Yoliswa Mfazwe thanked Engen for investing in the future of the school’s children and for strengthening the quality of education it is able to offer

“Elundini Primary is one of the few schools in the Eastern Cape to offer Robotics as part of its curriculum, making consistent power essential to run equipment, coding tools, digital devices and other STEM learning resources,” she shared

Engen CSI Manager Olwethu Mdabula says reliable power is fundamental to modern education

“By providing a solar-powered container dedicated to robotics and STEM studies, we are helping unlock opportunities for learners to thrive in technology-driven subjects This investment supports both sustainable development and meaningful educational impact ”

With the new solar-powered learning container now in place, Elundini Primary School is set to shine even brighter, ensuring that learners have uninterrupted access to robotics, coding and STEM education

“Investments like these bridge the digital divide and prepare learners for a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world,” adds Mdabula “We are proud to support schools that are extending themselves in innovative ways to

empower young people ”

The solar container will provide a secure and uninterrupted power source for robotics lessons, coding activities and digital literacy sessions, shielding learners from the frequent power outages that disrupt teaching time

“This system is compact, scalable, and designed for educational environments,”explains Kevin Singh, Head of EBES “Because it is completely self-contained, the solar container ensures uninterrupted power to the space it serves, offering a stable platform for robotics and STEM learning, even during outages ”

Engen’s involvement at Elundini Primary School is rooted in its 10-year partnership with the MHF, which has driven substantial improvements in early learning education across Nelson Mandela Bay

The partnership has already contributed to raising over R5 million to enhance early childhood and basic education in the region, supporting infrastructure upgrades, learning materials and digital resources

Unveiling the container, Principal Yoliswa Mfazwe thanked Engen for investing in the future of the school children. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

THIS year, PEMADS (Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society) promises once again to dazzle Gqeberha audiences with its much-loved annual Peter Pan-tomime and, yes, the pun is very much intended!

A highlight on the city’s cultural calendar, everybody is invited to join in this exceptional, family-oriented and affordable production brought to the stage at The Little Theatre, part of The Atheneum Complex on Athol Fugard Terrace

Audiences can look forward to a delightful mix of highly entertaining and popular music, dance, clever gags and laugh-out-loud comedy, complemented by awesome on-stage scenery, spectacular lighting and eye-catching costumes

The iconic story of Peter Pan – featuring enchanting and unforgettable characters such as Peter’s sassy fairy friend Tinkerbell, the well-natured Lost Boys, loyal Princess Tiger Lily and villainous and sly Captain Hook – first premiered on stage in London in 1904

It became an instant success for children, but also for those who are children at heart, and since then has captured the hearts of audiences all over the world

This festive season, soar with Tinkerbell as the Darling children – Wendy, John and Michael

An adventure awaits, which in-

cludes pirates, a saltwater CROCodile of monstrous proportions (this CROC’s fashionable look will definitely surprise audiences) and Captain Hook’s wicked trap set to crush the Lost Boys for good Come down to The Little Theatre to see who will come out on top and win the fray!

Celebrating the timeless values of friendship, bravery and responsibility for self and others, this captivating and heart-filled production echoes Peter Pan’s belief that “all the world is made of faith and trust and pixie dust ”

Filled with wonderful acting, laughter and fun for young and old, whilst delivering a heartfelt message with strong moral values, PEMADS’ yearly pantomime attracted well over 4000 patrons last year, showcasing the popularity of this beloved tradition

As a 76-year-old theatrical NPO, PEMADS could not be prouder to have been supporting and providing a platform to youth dramatic arts within our city throughout this time

To create this on-stage magic, an enthusiastic and highly talented creative team has worked tirelessly behind the scenes In the director’s chair sits Kelsey Scheepers, a seasoned drama teacher who directed the musical, Bonnie and Clyde, for Victoria Park High School earlier this year Having collaborated with PEMADS before, she brings her expertise once again to the PEMADS stage, this time in her directorial debut with the society

The dynamic duo, Caeleigh-Anne Heradien and Jody Koesnel, are the vocal directors and are sure to wow with exceptional harmonies and keep audience members’ hands clapping and feet tapping

THE Young Park Primary School in Algoa Park made history by becoming the first school in South Africa to introduce wrestling as an official school sport

Former wrestler and now trainer with several successful courses, JP Botha, said the decision to get the scholars involved is a runaway success

“I was called in by the principal, suggesting that we should start our own club, as I have a lot of experience And we did exactly that

“The enthusiasm was overwhelming

“In just a few weeks, we already have 70 scholars from Grade 1 to Grade 7 The talent of these young boys and girls is amazing

“I’m over the moon with what we achieved so far

“Even the reaction and excitement shown by the parents show that we are heading to bigger things

“Now we can teach the learners discipline, how to wrestle and keep them off the streets

“We will also hold trials on 7 March to try and get some of our learners in the EP team for the SA beach championships later that month

“We would also like to ask for sponsorships and donations as we now have to buy weightlifting shoes, suits and mats, which can be quite costly for a school,” Botha said
