MOUNTING frustration over illegal dumping and vandalism across several suburbsinNelsonMandela Bayhas prompted renewed calls forurgentintervention.

In Summerstrand, the Summerstrand NeighbourhoodWatch has closed off aproblematic illegaldumping area off Strandfontein Road following repeated dumping and alleged criminal activity.

“Thisstrip of tar would be clutteredwith taxis and people going with bakkie loadsofgarbage, while nefarious activities would happen in theevenings. It was abad spot,” saidSNW chairman Ian Miller

Theneighbourhood watch has since blocked access to the illegal dumping area, usingsecured drums filled with rocks andwarning signage.

“Ithas anodumping sign, and the barrels have‘hazardous’ written on them. If you want anything done, you need to do it yourself,”he shared.

Additional community clean-ups havetaken place at the corners of Gomery Avenue and Dana StreetinSummerstrand, while fencing has been installed near atownhouse complex close to the municipal tip to curbfurther dumping.

“Our community is extremely frustrated becausethe gates to the municipal tip areoften closed as aresult of the contractor not maintaininghis trucksand bins. Bins don’t arrive, so people offload illegally,”Millerclaimed

TheStrandfontein municipal drop-off tip catersfor various areas such as Walmer, Summerstrand,Humewood and the university.

“Themunicipality needstoget the tip sorted out.Weneed to havebins there on time;itisa focusareathatneeds to be dealt with.”

Miller added, “Our tips aren’tefficiently run. We need rangers out theresothat they canfine these guys.”

Concernsabout service delivery have also been formally raisedinHelenvale. In amemorandum dated11February, Deputy Executive Mayor Gary vanNiekerk submitted an urgent request for interventioninWard32tothe Acting City Manager.

“Thismemorandum serves as aformal and urgent request forassistance to the Communi-

ty of Helenvale in Ward 32,”hewrote.

Van Niekerk said the community had reported “a massive water leak and an illegal dump site” next to Helenvale PrimarySchool and near the Helenvale ResourceCentre

“I’ve visited the area, and it’s inhumane for not only people to be living in theseconditions, but also the fact that young scholarsattend the very school,”hewrote.

He further noted that “the roads around the school are also riddled with potholes, making the area almost impossible to access”

“Can you please send ateam to assess, repair and clean thisarea?” he requested, adding,“I urgeyou to treat thismatter with the highest level of priority and provide atimeline for the commencement of this critical intervention.”

In Kensington,Ward7CouncillorBrendon Pegram hasalso voiced strong concerns over illegal dumping andvandalism of community infrastructure.

“I feel it necessarytoexpress my extreme frustration anddisappointment upon observing thestate of affairs in the Kensington area, specifically pertaining to the regular occurrence of illegal dumping,”Pegram said last week.

“It has become abundantly clear that despite concerted efforts to maintaincleanliness, the area reverts to its previous state within amere week or two, indicating adisturbing trend of residents engaging in illegal behaviour within their own community.”

He saidhestruggled to understand the behaviour,“particularly given that refusecollection services arethe same across all areas.” Pegram appealed to residents to refrainfrom dumping illegally.

Despite the challenges, community groups say they remaincommitted to restoringaffected areas

“After yearsofwatching this strip of road become adumping ground for rubble and junk, along with taxis and (e-hailing cars) parking there andother unwantedactivity, we have nowtakenaction,” Millershared

“This is afirm step toward preventing further misuse of the area. TheSummerstrand Neighbourhood Watch will continue with the clean-up efforts and remaincommitted to restoringand protecting this space.

“Together,wetake back our neighbourhood.”

StraylivestockintakepausedamidFoot-and-MouthDiseaseconcerns

WHILE the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM)has announced ametro-widelivestock quarantine programme to curb the spreadof Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), operators at

the municipal animal pound say they are not accepting straycattle, citing health andbiosecurityconcerns.

The Municipality recently confirmed that, in

partnership with State Veterinary Services, it will roll out the initiative from its animal pound in Kariega next month.

Theprogramme aims to impound and quarantine stray livestock that may pose arisk of spreading FMD, particularly to semi

tion, the service provider operating the pound says it is not prepared to take in high-risk animals without written confirmation that there arenoactive FMDcases in the area.

IT was more thanjusta day of competition -itwas apowerful display of unity, respect and shared purpose.

MJ’s Judo Dojo hosted its official trials this weekend to select athletes for its Elite Squad and the Sarah Baartman District Team ahead of the 2026 South African Judo Championships, set to take place in Gqeberha.

From six-year-olds stepping onto the mat with nervous determination to seasoned seniorand veteran competitors fighting for another shot at provincial glory, the dojo was alive with energy.

The high-intensity tournament gave senseis and coaches the opportunity to carefullyevaluate talent for district representation -but beyond thethrowsand groundwork, something deeper stoodout. Judokas were divided into their respective age and weight categories, with advanced athletes-thosewho have previously competed at the district levelseparated from aspiring novices hoping to earn their first opportunity to compete at the SA Championships later this year. Yet what truly definedthe day was not

only the skill on display, but also the spirit in the room.

“It’s incredibletowitness,”saidSensei Reece Kramer. “Today wasn’t just about selection. It was about growth, courage and community.

“You could see the support from every corner of the dojo -parents backing every child, athletes lifting each other up. That’swhat buildschampions long before medals do.”

“I am truly honoured to be partofsuch an exceptional team, dedicated to creating lasting memories and providing apositive platform for our judokas to grow and expressthemselves,” said Tournament Director and Coach Matthew Spear

The second round of Elite Squad and Sarah Baartman District Team trials will take placeon21March 2026, as athletes continue theirjourney towards national competition.

Withthe South African Championships on the horizon, this weekend provedthat

MJ’sJudo Dojo is not only developing strongcompetitors -itisalso building apowerful judo family, united in discipline, resilience and unwavering support.

Smith will definitely visit other racing centres in thecountry more and more with some of his horses.

LikeGreeff, he has been successful on many of his visits.

The stable is confident that they have thestock to travel withand take on stronger competition elsewhere.

They combined with four winners, including theR175,000 Ibhayi Stakes for three-year-olds over 1400m,which was won by theimpressive Buffalo Bill.
