Smith takes the King’s win
Dean Smith is taking the South African horse racing world by storm. He obtained his trainer’s licence in October 2025, saddled his first winner at Fairview early in November, and this past Saturday, he won one of the biggest sprint races in the country. The four-year-old Kingdundee stormed home to win the R1.5 million World Pool Cape Flying Championship over 1000m convincingly at the L’Ormarins King’s Plate meeting in Cape Town. Smith dedicated this emotionally charged victory to his dad, Gavin, a multiple East Cape champion trainer who passed away in October after losing his battle with cancer.
