Concernraisedovertarballsfoundwasheduponbeaches

THE Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has warned that tar balls washing up on several beaches along the coastline posea serious risk to wildlife, particularly seabirds.

The organisation raised concern following the appearance of tarballs on beaches, including Algoa Bayand surrounding areas.

In astatement, SANCCOB described the tar balls as “small, sticky

clumps of weathered oil” that were observed over the weekend of 1February and reported to the relevant authorities for urgent attention.

SANCCOB cautioned that the material is hazardous, stating that tar balls are “toxic to both people and wildlife”.

The organisation urged members of the public not tohandle the tar balls and advised that they “should not attempt toclean up the material themselves”but instead report sightings to the appropriateauthorities.

While SANCCOB is actively involvedinresponding to the impact of oilpollution on seabirds, it clarified its role in suchincidents.

“SANCCOB is mandated to rescue, rehabilitate and release seabirds thathave been affected by oil,”the organisation said.

However, itstressed that SANCCOB has no mandate to conduct oil spill clean-up operations, noting that these responsibilities fallunder South Africa’s National OilSpill Contingency Plan and applicableLo-

cal Oil SpillContingency Plans.

The organisation highlighted the severe threat oil pollution poses to seabirds, explaining that “even small quantities of oil can damage feathers, reducing theirwaterproofing and insulation and leaving birds exposed to cold and exhaustion”.

SANCCOB further warned that “if oil is ingested during preening, it can cause severe internal damage”, and without rapid rescue and treatment, oiled seabirds often do not survive.

ASEAL found at SardiniaBay in Gqeberhahas tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case in thecity. The incident is the second recorded caseinthe Eastern Cape, following aconfirmed case in Jeffreys Bay latelast year. According to marine mammal biologist, Dr Greg

Hofmeyr of Bayworld, the latest incident occurredatSardinia Bayon 8January, duringthe late afternoon.

“The seal was reported by amember of thepublic tothe lifeguards on duty, and they contacted me.”

Theanimal was foundtobedisplaying abnormal behaviour, prompting concern among officials.

The seal was suspected of being

rabid because it had good body conditionand yet washaving seizures and was foaming at the mouth,” said Hofmeyr. “We collected asample on 9January, and we received the results on 26 January. This is the first case confirmed for Gqeberha.”

Thetest confirmed the presenceof rabies, marking the first confirmed case of rabies in aseal in Gqeberha

Dr Hofmeyr added that the closest priorcaseand the firstrecorded case in the EasternCape occurredinJeffreys Bayon16November.

“Four other seals with similar symptoms were recorded in the wider area duringthe same week. However, three tested negative, and we could notrecover the carcass for the fourth.”

FORTY-TWO birds —38hens and cocks, threegeese and one Muscovy duck—have been rescued from two spaza shops in Korsten where they were allegedly being kept in illegal abattoir conditions, raising serious concerns about both animalwelfare andpublic health.

The rescue took placeduring a jointmunicipal complianceoperation conducted at spazashopsinthe areaonWednesday, 4February

Accordingtothe Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague PE (AACL PE), the birds were found in “filthy, dark, overcrowdedcages of neglected birds” duringinspections at the shops.

AACL PE spokesperson, Karien van Schalkwyk, said the birdswere being keptfor slaughterand sale to the public in contravention of the Meat Safety Act. “The birdswere keptintwo shops for slaughter, food consumption and sale of meat to the public. Illegal abattoir operations, contravening the Meat Safety Act, meaning the abattoir is not reg-

istered, and no meat safety inspectorinspects the qualityand safety of meat sold,” shesaid.

Shewarned thatconsuming meat from illegal abattoirs carries significanthealth risks.

“Peoplemust be cautious when consuming the meat as it is often cheaper but no meat inspector has confirmedthathealthy animalsare slaughtered. The meat might be contaminated,”Van Schalkwyk said.

Withoutveterinary oversight and formal inspection, there is no guarantee that animals are disease-free, slaughteredhygienically or that the meat hasbeen handled, stored and transported under safe conditions Thisincreases the risk of foodborne illnesses andthe potential spread of disease to unsuspecting consumers

VanSchalkwykadded that while some of the birds wereinpoor physical condition, the living conditions forall were appalling.

“Some cagesweresolow that thebirds could not stand up. Overcrowdedconditionscause discomfort andstress, and often fighting, especially toget to limited water

and food sources. Theselivingconditionsare unnatural as they cannot display normal behaviourand havelimited space and movement. No natural sunlight.”

She further highlighted the cruelty associated with illegal slaughter practices.

In registered abattoirs, animals arepre-stunned to render them unconscious before slaughter. “In theseillegal abattoirs, the birds’ necks areslit when they arefully conscious,” shesaid. “Often knives are not sharp enough and this causes severe pain and sufferingwhen the bird’s neck is beingsawninto repeatedly, often also by peoplewho havenoknowledge or training to slaughter humanely.”

AACLPEconfirmed that the rescued birds have since been relocated to safe homes, where they will live as pets rather than be used for food

“Thanks to our inspectors, life for these birds will now be much better at theirnew homes, where they will be free to spread their wings and live as pets, not food,” the organi-

sation said in astatement, thanking Metro SAPSand health inspectors fortheir support.

Thejoint compliance operation was led by the MMC for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Bassie Kamana, together with Nompumelelo Mrubataand Ward 11 Councillor, Graham Gelderbloem. It was carried out in conjunction with officials from SAPS, Safetyand Security, TownRangers, Building Inspectors,WasteManagement, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), aFire Safety Officer, Budget and Treasury, Community Liaison Officers, Metro SAPS and health inspectors.

Theoperation resulted in several enforcement actions, including aR5 000 fine for thesale of non-saleable species, 18 fines for road user and vehicle-related offences, unregistered licences and unlicensed permits, and12municipal by-law fines forother regulatory contraventions.

Non-saleable species valued at R14 900 were confiscated, livestock was removed, and warning letters were issued.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any marine-related oil spills to the SouthAfrican Maritime SafetyAuthority’s (SAMSA) Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre on 021 938 3300, as well as to their local municipality’s disaster management centre. Sightings of oiled seabirds should be reported directly to SANCCOB. Contact numbers include 041 583 1830 for Gqeberha, and 064 019 8936 for after-hours assistance in the Gqeberha area.

Authoritieshave againurged membersofthe publictoavoidcontact with seals or any wildlife displaying unusual behaviour and to report such incidents to lifeguards or local authorities.

Any sightings ashore, or of seals behaving strangely, or any carcasses of seals, should be reported to the Bayworld stranding hotline 071724 2122

Acompliance operationwas carried out in Korsten on Wednesday,4 February.

“No arrests weremade, as all business documentation checked was found to be compliant,” themunicipalitysaid, adding that where non-compliance is identified, it works with SAPS and Immigration to effect arrests.

Members of thepublic are encouraged to report suspected illegalabattoirs to their nearest animal welfare organisation, theDepartment of Health or Metro SAPS.

VOLUNTEERS from ASEZ WAO took climate action into their own hands on Sunday, 1February, planting trees at two Nelson Mandela Bay schools as part of a global environmental campaign.

The tree-planting initiative, carried out at Khumbulani High School and Newton ParkTechnical High School, formed part of theMother’s Forest Project, aglobal environmental campaign ledby ASEZ WAO.

ASEZ WAO,which stands for Save the Earth from AtoZ,WeAre One Family, is an internationalvolunteer organisation composedofyoung adults.

According to ASEZ WAO representative, Lutho Jonas (27), tree planting remains one of the most accessible and effective ways to respond to climatechallenges

“Tree planting is the starting point in respondingtothe climate crisis,” Jonas said. “Trees absorbcarbon dioxide, and helpmitigatethe urbanheatisland effect, reducing boththe causesand impacts of climate change.”

He said the project was alsoaimed at strengthening environmental awareness among youngpeople

“Young adults came together with a sharedcommitmenttoimprove the environment of schools where future generations continue theirlearning and to raise students’awareness of environmental protection,” Jonasadded

The Mother’s Forest Project promotes tree planting as apractical responseto climate change, with trees planted as a symbol of amother’s care for the well-being of families, communities and future generations On Sunday, the activities began at 10:00 and brought together around 32 partici-

pants, including ASEZ WAO members and residents. Volunteers worked for approximately

Awide range of police stations wereaffected, from rural towns such as KwaBhaca, Libode, Qumbu and Willowmore, to urban centres including East London, Mthatha, Mdantsane and Gqeberha.

The Department of Community Safetyhas acknowledged that escapes are often linked to wrongful release, transportation failures and official negligence.

In response, the DA has written to the MEC demanding urgent intervention, including “a clear accountability plan to prevent further escapes”, immediatereporting on disciplinary outcomes, stricter compliance enforcement at the station level and decisive action against negligence.

three hours, transporting seedlings, digging holes, plantingsaplings, covering them with soil andwatering them.

Thsonono Buyeye, Memberofthe Mayoral Committeefor Public Health in NelsonMandela Bay, visited theplanting site andwelcomedthe initiative

“This is what we wanttosee –citizens of theworld coming together and making sure that they fightagainst climate change that is seriouslyaffecting poor communities,” Buyeyesaid. “With an initiative like this, we arebuilding resiliencesothatthe impact of climate change is notassevere or as devastatingasit normally is.”

The projectwas undertaken at the request of theDepartmentofForestry, whichsupplied 20 seedlings, whilstNelsonMandela Universitycontributed an additional 10 seedlings andcompost.

On thesame day, ASEZ WAO also planted 250 trees in thevicinity of Khayelitsha Hospital in Cape Town, where they were joined by theMinister of Forestry, Fisheries andEnvironment For the volunteers, theexperience carried personalmeaning.Simnikiwe Mqwebedu (25) described thetrees as symbols of long-term impact.

“The trees we planttoday aremorethan just greenery;they aresymbols of care, stewardship andhope for future generations,” she said

MeanwhileUnathiXuba(25) said the activity left her feeling fulfilled.

“I find plantingatree very satisfying. I can’t wait to see howthis treewill grow.”

IT’S that date again, Friday the 13th, whichmakes horse racing fans abit nervousabout the Fairview meeting.

Thereare many superstitious people in the sport of kings. Someof them see the date as bad luck, but others have had huge success when racing takes place on Friday the 13th.

There will be no feature race this Friday at the Greenbushes venue, but there will be plenty of exciting and competitive racing as usual.

AClassified Stakes and aConditionsPlate (fillies and mares) are only two of the interesting-looking races on the card

There is also still plenty to look forward to later in February, which is always abig month for racing in the Eastern Cape

The Ibhayi Stakes, Lady’sPendant and Breeders Guineas are allonthe menu for laterinthe month

Last Friday, the two starsofthe show were both horses trained by the East Cape Champion trainer, Alan Greeff.

One of the stars is aprovenfiveyear-old, but the other eye-catching

performance wasfroma two-yearoldinher veryfirst run.

Casperita was an impressive winner of theMaiden Juvenile Plate forfillies over 1000m. She wonby almost seven lengths and is clearly above average.

One wouldhavethought it wasa seasoned campaigner in the race, because Casperita handled her debut in aprofessional manner. Her career going forwardwillbefollowedwithgreat interest by the racingpublic

FairyKnight was the otherstar when he finished strongly under regularjockeyRichard Fourieto winthe Pinnacle Stakes.

Thiswas FairyKnight’sthird win in arow, andthe Greeff stable is doing agreat jobkeeping him at hisbest. He hadhis many supportersbiting theirnails beforeheproduced hisfamiliarlate burst to seal the deal.

“Heisa gutsy horse and always finds extraat the end of the race. He is an amazing horse,”Fouriesaid.

FairyKnight was locallybredby

Ascot Studand was the first syndicate horse in the Greeff yard.He hasnow won13ofhis 25 starts for

the Halo Syndicate.

“All the owners in the syndicate must know they areincrediblylucky to be involvedwith this horse,” Greeff commented.

It is alwaysa bitofanoccasion at Fairview when Fairy Knight runs. The passionate syndicate members thoroughly enjoy shouting their horse to victoryand leading him to the winners’enclosure
