STUDENTS from Eastcape Midlands TVET College in Heath Park took to Stanford Road on Tuesday, 25 August, in a passionate plea for authorities to tackle escalating crime and gender-based violence plaguing their community
Student Liaison Officer Victor Jantjies, who organised the event, said it was time the community stood up against rising crime
"There is a diverse range of crimes taking place, from rape to kidnapping and murder of women, which have become more prevalent," he commented "Gun violence, drugs and gangsterism are tearing our communities apart and having a negative impact on them "
He explained that they hoped to raise awareness, especially during Women's Month
"We want to raise awareness about the violent crimes that are escalating in our areas," said Jantjies "Safety is not only the responsibility of the community, but we also as students need to mobilise behind the community and speak out about these heinous crimes "
Jantjies, who hails from Bethelsdorp, called on police to be more proactive in fighting crime
"It is not only affecting the community outside, but our own students are being victimised, and it is about time that the police do something about the crime "
Anastatia Thorne, a 25-year-old student from Bethelsdorp, said they have had enough of violence in their community
"We are saying, enough is enough," she shared "A few weeks ago, the community had to bury a five-year-old who was raped and murdered "
According to Thorne, the com-
munity simply does not feel safe
Meanwhile, student Keesha McPherson shared how the simple act of walking down the street fills her with fear
"I am scared because anything can happen and nobody does anything about it," she said "I feel as though I'm constantly living in fear "
For student Siyolise Tshazibana, she's had enough of the gender-based violence prevalent in the community
"We've all had enough because women are being kidnapped; women are being cut into pieces, and with GBV we are all suffering, men and women," she shared
"We do not feel safe where we live, with our own families, our friends, the malls We don't feel safe "
Her hope is that the police will be able to curb crime
"We want them to hear our cries as women "

FORD South Africa announced mass layoffs affecting over 470 workers at its Silverton vehicle plant in Pretoria and Struandale engine facility in Gqeberha Trade Union Solidarity confirmed, in a statement, that Ford South Africa has sent an official notice to the union and others in which the company announces its intention to retrench more than 470 employees These retrenchments affect both the Silverton vehicle factory in Pre-
toria and the Struandale engine factory in Gqeberha
According to the notice, Ford says the job losses follow a "realignment" of its production capacity to match current and expected market demand In reality, this means the termination of 391 operator positions in Silverton, 73 at Struandale and 10 administrative positions
"We see this announcement as the beginning of possible greater job losses facing the entire automotive
industry in South Africa," says Willie Venter, deputy general secretary of Solidarity
According to Venter, economic pressure, international political uncertainties, and the government's unfavourable policies are causing this industry to become increasingly uncompetitive
"When an automotive giant like Ford takes such drastic steps, it is a warning to the entire sector We fear that further retrenchments in this
industry may be inevitable if the circumstances do not improve quickly," he warns Solidarity confirms that it will attend the consultation process under the guidance and supervision of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and that all its affected members will receive full support
"We will explore every possible alternative to limit job losses, and we will ensure that Ford not only fulfils its duty, but also that employees are
treated fairly," says Venter Solidarity also pointed out that these retrenchments will have a serious impact on the communities in Pretoria and Gqeberha and that it once again shows how vulnerable South African industries are under the current economic climate "Without effective intervention and economic reform on the part of our government, our country will have to endure even more job losses," says Venter

LEADING wildlife organisations,
BirdLife South Africa and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), have condemned new ship-to-ship fuel transfer regulations as inadequate to protect the critically endangered African Penguin, despite government claims that the measures represent a conservation lifeline
Minister Dion George signed the shipto-ship Transfer Regulations aboard the SA Agulhas II research vessel on 22 August, but conservationists warn that the rules contain fatal flaws which could accelerate the African Penguin's slide towards extinction
The regulations govern offshore bunkering, the practice of refuelling ships at sea rather than in harbour, currently permitted only in Algoa Bay
Whilst the activity saves time and costs for shipping companies, conservation groups argue that it poses devastating risks to marine ecosystems through oil spills and underwater noise pollution
"The correlation between increased vessel traffic noise and the dramatic decline in penguin numbers is undeniable," said Dr Alistair McInnes, Seabird Conservation Programme Manager at BirdLife South Africa “The Algoa Bay closure will be meaningless unless the negative consequences of bunkering are avoided "
St Croix Island, once home to South Africa's largest African Penguin colony with nearly 8,000 breeding pairs in 2015, now only has 700 pairs
According to conservationists, this 91 per cent decline coincided with the introduction of bunkering operations in 2016
The regulations permit night-time operations despite heightened spill risks and difficulties in detecting marine life in darkness
Nicky Stander, Head of Conservation at SANCCOB, emphasised the cumulative impact
"It is not only the ships actively involved in bunkering but also vessels stationed in the anchorage areas as they wait for fuel and move in and out of these zones, that will contribute to pressures on the African Penguin colony on St Croix "
Since bunkering began, four oil spills in Algoa Bay have been attributed to the operations, resulting in hundreds of oiled penguins and seabirds
Conservation groups argue that the government should exercise emergency powers under environmental legislation to ban bunkering entirely
"With fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remaining globally, every regulatory decision could determine whether this iconic species survives or joins the growing list of African wildlife extinctions "

IN recognition of their dedication to musical excellence, Algoa Music Ministry has been invited to perform at Mary McDonald’s This is Christmas concert in New York
The invitation to perform on the world stage in New York is a dream come true for the Algoa Music Ministry from the Eastern Cape
The concert, on 28 November, forms part of the Distinguished Concerts in the New York Concert Series (DCINY) taking place at the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall
The event will celebrate the retirement of renowned US composer, Mary McDonald
However, due to financial constraints, the choir, which consists of more than 50 choristers, needs financial assistance to meet their goal
Algoa Ministries Choir represents 29 churches from the Eastern Cape, with a total of 110 choir members aged from 17 to 76, of which only half will be travelling to New York
Choir conductor, Venita van Wyk, who is responsible for music development in the Algoa Ministry churches across the Eastern Cape, explained how the opportunity came about
“When DCINY sent me the email, they informed us that they had picked up on our work,” she shared
“A well-known Christian composer is retiring in New York at the end of the year, and we happened to perform one of her pieces on social media
“This is how we were noticed and invit-

ed to the event in New York They invited me to be part of the end-of-year concert in honour of Mary McDonald and wanted me to identify choristers to be part of this event ”
The choir will be part of a global mixed choir performing the cantata, This is

Christmas, which has been composed by Mary McDonald for this event
Whilst in New York, the choir will have two separate performances at local churches as part of their outreach and fellowship programme
“We will perform some Christmas mu-
sic and traditional pieces, as well as Afrikaans music,” said Van Wyk
“We have a few South Africans in the USA looking forward to hearing some congregational hymns, and the young choristers have committed themselves to performing My Jesus Ek min U as their highlight piece ”
They will be performing in New York from 28-30 November and will take a few days to explore the city
“We need to leave by 26 November, and the cost per person is R50,000,” said Van Wyk “It is very daunting and our biggest challenge ”
Each member has been tasked with raising half of their own fees
“We ask members to come up with R25,000 each, and then we raise the rest ”
The fundraising efforts for flights, accommodation, meals, entrance fees and spending money still have a long way to go, with a shortfall of R600,000
“It is challenging for us We need to give the members time to raise their own funds, but we have a shortfall of R600,000,” Van Wyk shared
Choir members have been working tirelessly with various fundraising initiatives
“They are working hard and are very excited,” Van Wyk shared
“Going to America, for the majority of the choir, will be their first time travelling abroad ”
The opportunity represents not only a chance to perform at one of the world’s most prestigious venues but also a celebration of South African musical talent on the international stage

CENTRESTAGE at Baywest proudly presents the inaugural performance at their spectacular new venue: Voices of Our Time, a breathtaking tribute to four of the world's most beloved vocal powerhouses – Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, and Adele.
Meet the extraordinary performers
Sisipho Mangqishi, a music student at NMU, brings her church-trained foundation and passionate delivery to Celine Dion's most treasured ballads. "I'm mainly covering Adele, and it's such a thrill to sing these classic songs with such a small, fun and talented group," she shares.
Jody Butler, a born-and-bred Gqeberha vocalist inspired by legends like Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross, brings his warm, versatile voice and international cruise ship experience to Josh Groban's operatic contemporary style. "Music is my way of telling stories and creating moments people never forget," he explains. "I can't wait for the people of Gqeberha to experience how we tell the story of these incredible songs."

AND the Horse of the Season is?
This important question will be answered on Saturday night when the East Cape Horse of the Season is crowned This is the most prestigious award of the year at the annual East Cape Racing Awards evening
The Awards will take place on Saturday evening at a glittering occasion in the Bold Silvano Room at the Fairview race track in Greenbushes
There were many unique achievements and performances of the past season which must be celebrated in style by the local racing fraternity
The equine and the human achievers will be honoured at the awards
The champion stable of Alan Greeff dominated the nominations after a brilliant season It won’t be a surprise if this stable picks up most of the awards
Two awards that will definitely go to the Greeff stable are those of
regional
Champion Two-year-old filly and Champion Three-year-old filly
Which horses will be the winners is still unsure though but only Greeff horses have been nominated in these two categories
Before the winners can be celebrated, there is work to do at a good-looking meeting of eight races on Friday at the Fairview Turf track
The speed will be on in the feature race, the R175 000 Speeders Stakes, over 1000m Top sprinters will contest this one (race 6), and it should be a fantastic race
The Gavin Smith stable dominated the Speedsters Stakes in recent years Smith will be aiming to win the race for the fifth year in a row after the victories of Cruise Control (2024 & 2022), Slim Jannie (2023) and Stranger Danger (2020)
Pinnacle Stakes races at Fairview are always full of quality and ultra-competitive events Friday’s

Victory Raceway will host the final Regional Round and Club Championship Round 8 on Saturday, 6 September at their premises in Victoria Drive in Walmer The classes competing are: 1600 Saloons, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Hot Rods, Heavy Metals and American Saloons. Gates open at 13:00 and racing will start from 17:00. Entry is R70 per adult and R30 for children u/12. Track parking is R50 per vehicle There will be a variety of food stalls available. fourth race over 2400m will be one of those - don’t miss it!
The busy September racing month started with a Turf meeting two days ago but there are still plenty to look forward to, including the Friendly City Stakes and the second leg of the Poly Challenge
Another Poly meeting was added to the programme only last week and will take place on Wednesday, the 10th This means Friday’s meeting will be the first of three Fairview meetings within seven days - no time to rest!
This makes September the busiest month of the year at Fairview with seven meetings in total October will host six Fairview meetings, November five and December also five
The current season started last month, and we saw some excellent rides from many of the jockeys As expected, the Greeff stable was quick out of the blocks and saddled 15 win-

ners in the first month There were also strong showings from trainers Kelly Mitchley and Smith Most of the trainers had a taste of victory in the first month to set them up
for the rest of the season

Clubreceivessponsorship
THERE were joy and smiles as Bay Labour Solutions provided generous sponsorship to the Motherwell NU11 informal settlement
club Prince Academy in Emjondolo informal settlement, on Saturday

Prince Academy founder and chairman, Prince Maginxa, who was visibly chuffed, stated that his reason for establishing a football academy was that children and young people committed crimes at Emjondolo on a daily basis Maginxa said, "I requested the community members so that we could combat crime through sport It was only a handful of people who heeded my call I told myself that I should not give up I knew that there were people who would join us if the club had been established Today, we have six teams We started the teams without kits, but I bought a very cheap ball "
Parent Nosipho Mthirara thanked Bay Labour Solutions for coming to the rescue of their children "I would like to thank Prince Maginxa for establishing the club for our children and young people He is more than just a coach we see him as a parent to our children and young people in our community Lastly, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Bay Labour Solutions for this generous sponsorship that will leave lasting memories in our community," said Mthirara
