TheMinisterofPublic Works andInfrastructure (DPWI),Dean Macpherson,has instructed his regional office to dispatch the task team to the barracks and submit areport to his office within 10 businessdays.

In response to questions from PE Express about the condition of the Algoa Park police barracks, the provincial police spokesperson, BrigadierNobuntu Gantana, confirmed that the Department of Public Works andInfrastructure(DPWI) had been madeaware of maintenanceconcernsatthe barracks.

“SAPS is aware of the condition of the buildings andthe DPWIhas also beeninformed of themaintenance concerns,” she said. “An inspection of the premises wasconducted by DPWI during May2026 to assess the condition of thebuildings.”

She added that SAPS attends to day-to-day maintenance matters within its mandate as and when faults or complaints are reported. “Matters requiringmajor repairs andmaintenanceare referred to the DepartmentofPublic Worksand Infrastructure for the necessaryattention.”

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has allocated R5.6 million in its 2026/27 budget for maintenance and upgrade projects at several of the metro’s beaches as part of ongoing efforts to improve public facilities and support tourism.

The funding will be used for infrastructure upgrades, repairs and maintenance at Brighton Beach, Wells Estate, Maitlands, Sardinia Bay and Kings Beach.

According to the municipality, R2 millionhas been allocated for newfencing at Maitlands Beach to improve access controland safety, while R1.5 millionwillbe spent on upgrading the balustrade at the Wells Estate beachfront precinct.

Afurther R1.5 millionhas been budgetedtorepair and upgrade the vandalised ablution facilities at Sardinia Bay Beachand R500,000 will be usedtorestore fencing and braai facilities at Brighton Beach.

The Kings Beach kiosk will also undergo aR500,000 upgrade, including improvements to the building’s infrastructure and the replacementofits roof.

In addition to these projects, the municipality said maintenanceworkwould include tree felling where necessary, grass cutting, parkmaintenance, cleaning, improvementstopublic lighting and sidewalk main-

tenance at beaches including Sardinia Bay.

The metro currently has four Blue Flag beaches and said it has experienced steady growthinvisitor numbers in recent years.

The municipality recently launched aBeachSafety Programme under which young people were trained as peace officers topatrol the Humewood and Summerstrand beachfront areas in an effort to improve safety and help prevent crime.

Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the municipality remained committed to investing in its beachfront infrastructure through its Integrated Development Plan and budget process

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have experienced asteady increase in both local and international touristsvisiting and enjoying our beaches,” she said.

“The vandalism that occurred during the lockdown caused significant damage to our beach infrastructure. We are now working to restore our beaches toahigh standard that has always been enjoyed by both residents and visitors ”

Lobishe said the municipality aimed to continue investing in its beaches, with further upgrades and maintenanceplanned in the next financial year at facilities including Wells Estate and Brighton Beach.

HUIS Louisa Meyburgh celebratedits 50th anniversary on Wednesday, 15 July, markingfive decades of providing residential and frail care for older people in Gqeberha.

According to historical information provided by Helen Fourie, Head of InstitutionatHuis Louisa Meyburgh,the home was established in July 1976 by the Dutch Reformed Church’s EasternCape Synod and the Synodical Commission forthe Service of Mercy (SKDB). It was named after Louisa Meyburgh, whose work in Gqeberha, previously known as Port Elizabeth,during theearly 1900s inspiredthe facility’s founders

The historical records state that Meyburgh arrived in 1900aftertravelling from theFree State to recoverfrom illness. She remained in thecityand became involved in church andcommunity workover the followingdecades.

Accordingtothe home’srecords, Meyburgh dedicated much of her time to missionary work and supporting people in need before her deathin1950 at the age of 76. The facility that bears her name opened with accommodationfor 60 residents, including 40 frail care beds. Today, 50 years later, it is registered to accommodate 66 residents, of whom 43 receivefrail care. Over the years,the home hasexpanded itsservices to supportresidents’ physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Nursing staff and caregivers provide 24-hourcare, while meals areplanned with guidance from adietitian and adapted to residents’ individual dietary requirements.

Residents also enjoy avariety of activities, includingexercise sessions, movie afternoons, concerts, monthly high teas and games.

Hairdressing and beauty servicesare availableonsite,whilelearners from nearby Kabega Primary School regularly visit residents duringspecial occasions.

THEonce-empty play area at Heatherbank Primary School has been transformed into acolourful road safety bike track, giving the school’s youngest learners afun and interactive space to play while learning valuable road safety skills.

The projectformed part of aMandela Day initiative coordinated by The Community Chest of the Eastern Cape and DG Capital.KelstonMotorGroup joined several local businesses in volunteering their timeand resourcestouplift different areas of the school.

Each participating organisation selected aproject where it could make the greatest impact. Kelston Motor Group adopted theschool’s pre-primary play area, where employees spent the day painting aminiature road safety bike track, installing miniature road signs and donating push bikes to createanengaging outdoor learning environment.

Designed to encourage active play while introducingchildren to thebasicsofroad safety,the completedbike track will provide alasting benefit for the school’s youngest learners.

HeatherbankPrimary School has aremarkablestory of resilience. After closingin2012 due to declining enrolment and infrastructure challenges, the school reopened in 2013 with just 33 learners.
