Motherwell, KwaDwesi flagged as Gqeberha crime hotspots NELSON Mandela Bay remains a concern in the Eastern Cape’s latest crime statistics, with KwaDwesi and Motherwell singled out over persistent levels of murder and attempted murder. The warning comes as the Eastern Cape SAPS released its latest crime statistics at Moses Twebe Hall in Dimbaza on Thursday, 10 September, covering the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year from April to June. While the province recorded declines in several serious crime categories in the previous quarter, the latest figures show that nine of the 17 community-reported serious crime categories increased during the first quarter. Attempted murder was among the increases, rising by 17 cases, or 3.1%, from 540 cases in the first quarter of 2025/26 to 557 cases in the same period of 2026/27. Common assault also increased slightly, by three cases or 0.1%, to
MEC for Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha. 3,419 cases. Other increases included attempted sexual offences, which rose by 13.8% from 94 to 107 cases, while contact sexual offences increased from 14 to 25 cases. Malicious damage to property in-
Livingstone Hospital employees arrested in alleged theft probe FOUR employees of Livingstone Hospital and a community member have been arrested following alleged theft incidents at the Gqeberha hospital, with medicine among the items allegedly stolen. The arrests followed a two-week security operation at the hospital, according to the Eastern Cape Department of Health. TYEKS Security Services officers apprehended the five suspects and handed them over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), which subsequently made the arrests. The department said the suspects were linked to alleged theft from several parts of the hospital, including the kitchen and laundry departments. “Other items reportedly involved include air-conditioning equipment and medicines,” the department said in a statement issued on Tuesday. SAPS will lead the criminal investigation into the allegations. The department has not identified the four employees’ positions at the hospital. The arrests have been welcomed by the Department of Health, which praised both TYEKS Security Services and SAPS for their response. “The arrests demonstrate the importance of strong security partnerships, vigilance and a proactive approach in protecting public healthcare facilities and the resources entrusted to them for the benefit of patients and communities,” the department said. The department said theft from a hospital affects more than the insti-
tution itself because the resources are intended to serve patients and communities. “Stealing from a hospital is not merely stealing from an institution; it is stealing from patients, families and communities who rely on these services,” it said. The department also issued a warning to employees and others who may be involved in criminal activity within the public health system. “The Department wishes to send a clear message that there is no place for criminality, corruption or misconduct within the public health system,” it said. Any employee found to have taken part in unlawful activities will face consequence management, including possible disciplinary action, in line with labour relations procedures. The department said internal labour relations processes had already begun. “Labour Relations processes have been initiated to ensure that all internal procedures are followed and that accountability measures are implemented where necessary,” it said. The Department of Health said it would continue working with security companies, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen security at healthcare facilities. Members of the public and employees are also encouraged to report suspicious activities that threaten public resources or compromise healthcare services.

ous quarter showed an overall improvement in serious crime across the province. Between January and March, the 17 community-reported serious crimes fell by 6.6%, with 35,921 cases recorded compared with 38,475 during the same period the previous year. Nelson Mandela District accounted for 20.2% of the province’s serious crime during that quarter, making it the second-largest contributor after Buffalo City at 20.5%. However, Nelson Mandela District recorded an 18.6% decrease. It also contributed the largest share of contact crime at 19.5%, although this category fell by 16.1% in the district. The province’s overall murder figure also decreased by 7% in the fourth quarter, from 1,020 to 949 cases, while attempted murder fell by 14.1%, from 610 to 524 cases. However, SAPS identified Nelson Mandela Bay, along with Buffalo City and OR Tambo, as among the province’s most problematic dis-
tricts, contributing significantly to murder, attempted murder, assault, robbery and sexual offences. MEC for Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, said the focus must remain on areas experiencing persistent crime. “We cannot have hotspots forever,” he said. The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, said the crime figures must be viewed in terms of their impact on communities. “Behind every crime statistic is a person, a family and a community affected by crime,” he said. The province is also deploying 135 new vehicles to police stations, comprising 78 Crime Detection and 57 Support vehicles. For Nelson Mandela Bay, however, the continued focus on Motherwell and KwaDwesi shows that despite broader improvements in several crime categories, serious violent crime remains a key concern in parts of Gqeberha.
Political parties snub Nelson Mandela Bay SOMA amid service-delivery crisis NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT SEVERAL political parties stayed away from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s State of the Metro address, with the political boycott overshadowing Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe’s presentation of the metro’s plans. The address and gala dinner, held on Thursday night, 10 September, came amid criticism over the cost of the event and ongoing water, electricity, roads, sanitation and other service-delivery challenges. According to media reports, several political parties either stayed away from the event or opted to attend virtually. The Democratic Alliance (DA) had announced before the event that it would not attend, saying money spent on the occasion could instead be used to fix roads, restore streetlights, address water challenges and keep communities clean. DA mayoral candidate, Retief Odendaal, subsequently delivered the party’s “True State of the Metro” in a social media address. He described Nelson Mandela Bay as a city with “enormous potential” but said it was struggling to perform basic local-government functions. “Sadly, we are currently a broken City, but I want to say clearly that it does not have to be this way,” Odendaal said. He raised concerns about the metro’s qualified audit opinion for 2024/25, irregular expenditure, water losses and electricity infrastructure.
Odendaal said non-revenue water had reached 60.39%, that about 7,000 leaks had been reported in July and that there was a 64% vacancy rate among plumbers, engineers and officers in water services. He also claimed there were about 22,000 faulty streetlights and said electricity losses had reached about R1.48 billion in 2024/25. “We need to invest in infrastructure before it fails, not after it collapses,” he said. The EFF separately explained its decision in a statement issued by the EFF Eastern Cape. It said its caucus had decided not to attend the SOMA or gala dinner because communities continued to face unemployment, poverty and service-delivery problems, including water outages and leaks, sanitation and drain spillages, deteriorating roads and electricity challenges. The EFF also said it accepted political responsibility for the Electricity & Energy and Budget & Treasury portfolios under its control, highlighting work including the Booysens Substation, expanded electrification and electricity infrastructure interventions. Lobishe, meanwhile, presented a contrasting assessment of the metro. “The State of Nelson Mandela Bay is therefore one of progress under pressure, opportunities amidst challenges and a city that refuses to stand still,” she said. The municipality reported that 97.7% of households had access to water and 95.7% to improved sanita-
tion. Lobishe said about R1.3 billion had been invested in drought mitigation projects aimed at preventing Day Zero. The metro had replaced 23,570 water meters and repaired 1,186 indigent leaks. On roads, Lobishe highlighted 17km of gravel roads tarred over two financial years and 23,565 potholes repaired. The current MTREF includes R1.7 billion for roads and stormwater. Electricity interventions included 297 new public lights and 3,708 retrofitted lights, while the municipality is developing the 15MW Greenbushes Solar Farm and 25MW Parsons Power Park. The municipality also reported R1.45 billion in investment facilitated, 1,240 permanent jobs created and 16,492 work opportunities through the EPWP and public employment programmes. However, Lobishe acknowledged the metro’s 33.1% unemployment rate. “The metro must be investment-ready, infrastructure-ready and skills-ready and we must ensure that local people benefit from the economic opportunities created in their own city, particularly women, youth and people with disabilities,” she said. Lobishe also acknowledged that challenges remained. “A credible State of the Metro Address cannot merely be a catalogue of achievements. We must also be honest about the challenges that remain and the work that still lies ahead,” she said.

From Motherwell to the world stage NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT TWO young models from Motherwell are celebrating national pageant titles that have opened the door to an opportunity to represent South Africa on the international stage. Lwazikazi Johannes (17) was crowned Miss Junior Teen Planet South Africa 2026, while nine-year-old Ayabukwa Makuluma was crowned Miss Pre-Teen Planet South Africa 2026 during the Pageant SA competition in Johannesburg from 4 to 8 July. Both girls, who are members of the Lwazikazi Foundation in Gqeberha, were selected to represent South Africa at the Miss Junior Planet International and Miss Pre-Teen Planet International competitions in Ephesus, Turkey. Lwando Johannes, director of the Lwazikazi Foundation, said the girls’ dedication and commitment had helped them earn the opportunity. “Lwazikazi was selected to represent South Africa through her participation and achievements in pageantry and modelling,” he said. “Her dedication, confidence, discipline and commitment to representing young South Africans made her a suitable representative.” For Ayabukwa, the journey into modelling began with a desire to build her self-love and confidence. The Grade 4 learner at Parsons Hill Primary School has since developed a growing pageant portfolio, including Queen Face of Motherwell 2024, first princess in Miss Pre-Teen Eastern
Cape 2024 and Queen Junior Miss Diverse Eastern Cape 2025. Lwando said the young model had found more than confidence through her involvement with the foundation. “She found more than confidence; she found love, family, support and the joy of caring and sharing,” he said. Her latest title has now given her the opportunity to represent South Africa internationally — something she hopes will help her become more confident, learn new things and meet young contestants from around the world. She also hopes to experience different cultures, make new friends and inspire other children to follow their dreams, work hard and believe in themselves. Meanwhile, Lwazikazi has been on the pageant journey for almost a decade. The Grade 11 learner at Kabega Christian School began competing at the age of eight with the support of her family. Since then, she has won titles including Miss Teen Port Elizabeth, Miss Junior Eastern Cape and Miss Teen Grand South Africa, and has served as an Ambassador of TMA Models. Her modelling experience has also taken her beyond South Africa, with Lwazikazi participating in a fashion show in Botswana in October 2025. But her journey has not been limited to the stage. Lwazikazi founded the Lwazikazi Foundation in 2018, using modelling and pageantry as platforms to empower young people, build confidence, encourage leadership and promote
community involvement. According to Lwando, the foundation’s work extends beyond modelling to include youth development, community upliftment, charity work, leadership and creating positive opportunities for children and young people. One of its initiatives is Face of Motherwell, which provides children and young people with opportunities to participate in positive activities, develop confidence and feel valued within their community. For Lwazikazi, giving back is another part of her journey. She hopes her opportunity to represent South Africa will allow her to build positive relationships and learn from young people from other countries. She also wants to inspire other young South Africans to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. Both girls are preparing for the international competition through pageant and runway training, public speaking, interview preparation, confidence building, deportment and stage presence. They are also being encouraged to understand the responsibilities that come with representing South Africa and to speak confidently about their communities, aspirations and the positive messages they want to share. The international competition was initially scheduled for 30 September to 10 October but has since been postponed to next year. Lwando said the postponement would give national directors and models additional time to strengthen their fundraising efforts.

Gqeberha strategist joins Ster-Kinekor SK Squad A GQEBERHA brand and business strategist has put the Eastern Cape on the national creative map after being selected as one of five creators for the 2026 Ster-Kinekor SK Squad. Delon le Roux is the sole Eastern Cape representative on the national panel, having been selected from entries across the country following a competitive final held in Johannesburg on 4 September. The finalists pitched their content concepts to a four-member judging panel during a Shark Tank-style event streamed live on TikTok, with each finalist given five minutes to present a content concept and two minutes to defend it under questioning. The five creators named to the squad are Le Roux, Ayanda More, Matthew Louw, Keenan Collison and Priya Bandu. The appointment carries a 12-month contract with Ster-Kinekor Theatres, alongside creator training and access to exclusive screenings and content experiences. Finalists were asked to choose one film from a shortlist of five and build the content campaign they would run if contracted to cover it. Le Roux chose The Devil Wears Prada 2, a film about a magazine losing its authority to social media, and built his pitch around a se-
ries filmed in a Ster-Kinekor foyer in which members of the public are asked who decided what they are wearing and watching. “I pitched a film about print media losing its power to the algorithm,” said Le Roux. “I previously wrote for a Cape Town-based women’s magazine back when magazines still decided what mattered, and I now work in the industry that replaced them. My lived experience was the one strategic advantage nobody else in the room could copy.” Le Roux, a former model who now holds an Executive MBA and runs a strategic brand and business consultancy, THE G.O.A.T GROUP, has worked across South Africa and South Korea over a career spanning close to 20 years. He directed the inaugural Eastern Cape Fashion Week, a provincial first, and has done brand work for the National Arts Festival, SANParks, Ford, OMODA, Woolworths and MAC.
