Work on Oval begins

onstruction of the Boland Oval Lifestyle Estate in Paarl has officially got underway, with enabling works commencing on Monday (7 September). The latest phase of the development will see work begin on the grass embankments and associated civil infrastructure, marking the move from planning and preparation into construction. The estate is being developed by Boland Gateway, with Staytus Collection serving as the development-management company and ASLA appointed as the contractor. The project includes the establishment of the Boland Oval residential estate as well as the expansion and upgrade of the existing Boland Park cricket grounds. Once completed the upgraded cricket facility will

be a significant sports and community asset for Paarl and the wider Boland region. CIVIL WORK BEGINS The commencement of the civil works is also part of the development’s progression towards the fifty over 2027 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. James Fortuin, Boland Cricket Chief Executive Officer, labels the development as “a very big milestone”. “The project that we are busy with at the moment is to reconfigure and enlarge our grass embankments. So, that will take our capacity up from 7 500 to just over 12 000, which means there’s more for everybody, more seating in general. That’s going to stand in good stat for the years to come, and not only for the World Cup but also for SA 20, where we are at the moment under capacitated. “This particular project is one element and then we are also building our new

player management and officials area, and we’re upgrading seating around the stadium. All in all we’ll spend just under R45 million in preparations, capital and other preparations for the World Cup.” With construction now underway the development team said it was looking forward to seeing Boland Oval take shape and to the long-term vision of creating a destination bringing together residential, sporting and community-focused opportunities in Paarl. DAY SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN “We have received approval from the municipality for 1 000 residential units,” says Handré Basson, Director at Staytus Collection. “Along with this there is a day school for children, there are swimming pools, delis and more. It is really going to be a miniature estate in itself.

According to Basson their market for the residential units is for the middle-class people. “It is for our community because we feel there is a big need. It will also be the first stadium in Africa where we have a residential component around a sports body. “In England they do it everywhere. Our need here is to create something in Paarl that does not exist here yet. Everyone has houses with plots. If a young first time home buyer can buy an apartment here then we feel that we are really serving the full market in Paarl, because I don't think Paarl serves our average person. That is our need. “We are going to start on 1 November with the first two blocks which will hopefully be finished before the start of the World Cup. Then probably after about three years the whole residential development should be finished."

Franschhoek Pass still being ﬁxed Chantélle Hartebeest Repair work is still underway at the Franschhoek Pass after it was hit with more damage during severe weather in May this year. The Pass initially suffered extensive damage in October 2023 after heavy rainfall. Western Cape MEC for Infrastructure Tertius Simmers previously said that heavy downpour caused "slope failures, debris build up and deterioration of the road and the drainage systems". Jandré Bakker, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure, said at the end of October 2025 that contactors were hard at work filling slopes along the affected part of the road. At the time they were busy installing self-drilling soil nails, high-strength steel mesh, anchored gabion walls, and reinforced shotcrete. "The road surface and subsoil drainage systems in the affected portion of road are being reinstated and improved. Damaged road pavement layers are being reinstated and stormwater drainage systems are being repaired. Erosion protection measures, such as rip rap and erosion control blankets, are also being installed," said Bakker. Early in May the South African Weather Service (SAWS) put out an Orange level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall for "mountainous regions of the Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, the western parts of the Theewaterskloof, Breede Valley and Witzenberg local

municipalities of the Western Cape from Sunday to Tuesday (10 – 12 May 2026)". The heavy cold front wreacked havoc across the Western Cape and the Franschhoek Pass was not spared. As part of a flood recovery update Simmers confirmed at the end of July that the Pass suffered extensive flood damage. DU TOITS RIVER BRIDGE "The route remains one of our highest-priority recovery projects. In addition to multiple slope failures and slips, significant damage to the Du Toits River Bridge requires further engineering intervention. Our teams remain on site, and the necessary repair works form part of the Western Cape's broader flood recovery programme." At the time Simmers said the department's projection to reopen the Pass for traffic by the end of October 2026 is subject to construction progress and weather conditions. Recently Paarl Post reached out to the department about the recent developments on the ongoing construction. Melchior Botes, another spokesperson for the Department, confirmed with the publication that the Franschhoek Pass will remain closed until further notice. "It remains closed to all traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, light and heavy motor vehicles. An update on reopening will be provided at the beginning of October 2026." Botes added that "Good progress is being made on the Du Toits River Bridge

Contractors are still busy with repair work. Since the extensive damage three years ago Franschhoek Pass has not been fully reopened due to construction. The storm in May led to the full closure of the Pass while construction work is underway. The Department will provide an update in October.

Workers across South Africa are being pushed into poverty by fuel-price increases that have left official inflation figures looking meaningless, the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has warned. While the country's headline inflation rate sits at 4,3% the cost of filling a tank has surged far beyond what wage increases can cover. A litre of 95 unleaded petrol now

costs R26,92 inland, compared to R15,16 just five years ago, a 77% jump. Diesel prices tell an even grimmer story. Inland drivers now pay R30,05 per litre, up from R12,46 in 2020, a 141% increase. The crisis is not confined to South Africa. Diesel prices in the United States hit a record high on Friday, reaching $5,85 per gallon, up from $3,71 a year ago.

The surge follows further disruption to global oil supplies with fresh strikes on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in the US-Iran conflict. It began in late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which prompted Tehran to block the strait, a critical waterway for energy transit. Fuel is not the only pressure point. Electricity tariffs climbed 8,76% for Eskom customers in April and 9,01% for municipal users in July, roughly double the inflation rate. Food prices continue to climb, with the average household food basket now costing R5 479,80 according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group. The combined effect is catastrophic for low-income families. Data from the group shows transport and electricity costs alone eat up 65,8% of a minimum-wage worker's monthly income before a single rand is spent on food. For a family of four it leaves just R413,34 per person, nearly half the national food poverty line. Martlé Keyter, chief executive officer for operations at MISA, said workers faced impossible decisions. MISA is calling on government to reform the fuel-price structure urgently.

Skool se skootrekenaars in nagtelike inbraak weggedra Chantélle Hartebeest Misdadigers het die afgelope naweek Nederburg Primêr in Paarl-Oos geteiken en verskeie skootrekenaars gesteel. Volgens Marco Walters, die waarnemende skoolhoof by Nederburg Primêr, het die inbraak Sondagoggend (6 September) omstreeks 02:44 gebeur. Walters sê sowat ses skootrekenaars is tydens die misdaad gesteel. Hy meen die gebeure raak ook die leerders van die skool. “Leerders sal nou nie in die rekenaarkamer kan ingaan nie. Fietsryer met hart in Paarl Chantélle Hartebeest Wat vroeg vanjaar as ’n fietstoer van Bloemfontein tot in Kaapstad vir ’n goeie doel begin het, het in ’n sprokiesverhaal geëindig. Nadat Bea Labuschagne in Maart vanjaar die Paarl tydens haar fietstoer tussen Bloemfontein en Kaapstad besoek het, het sy nou besluit om haar hier op dié dorp te vestig. Boonop is sy nou verloof! Dit het als begin toe dié jong biokinetikus die harte van Suid-Afrikaners geraak toe sy die pad van haar tuisdorp tot in Kaapstad per fiets aandurf. Die reis was meer as 1 000km lank. Vir Labuschagne (23) het dit nie oor haarself gegaan nie, maar oor die talle leerders in wie se lewens sy ’n verandering wil maak. Om hierdie droom te verwesenlik het sy ’n organisasie sonder winsbejag, Prosper in Life with Christ, gestig en fokus veral op finansiële ondersteuning. Ons trou later vanjaar. Ek het nooit in my wildste drome gedink dat ek teen die einde van vanjaar getroud sal wees nie.” Labuschagne het sedertdien ook haar praktyk in die Paarl gevestig. Die geld wat Labuschagne tydens haar fietstoer ingesamel het, het sy aan haar oud-skool op Bloemfontein, Willem Postma Primêre Skool, geskenk. In ’n sosialemedia-inskrywing kort ná die oorhandiging het Labuschagne die volgende gedeel: “Met die geld wat gaan vir akademiese en sportontwikkeling, vertrou ek dat die Here ook hier kinders sal bemagtig om eendag hul eie stories te vertel en terug te gee.”

Dylan sal van 18 tot 28 September aan dié wêreldkampioenskap deelneem. Dit is nie die eerste keer dat hy die geleentheid kry om Suid-Afrika op dié vlak te verteenwoordig nie. Met die vorige junior wêreldkampioenskap is hy twee weke voor die span se vertrek in die hospitaal vir ’n operasie opgeneem en moes die geleentheid laat verbygaan, nadat sy ingewande geknoop het en gesondheidswerkers ’n paar sentimeter moes verwyder. Volgens sy pa, Riaan Pietersen (61), was dit ná Dylan se herstel duidelik dat hy nie meer ’n slagoffer wou wees nie. Reeds op 12-jarige ouderdom het Dylan hom gevra: “Pa, sal jy my oplei om ’n vegter te wees?” Riaan sê hy kon in Dylan se oë sien dat hy gereed vir dié uitdaging was. Sedertdien het Dylan hom met groot toewyding aan boks en skopboks gewy, met die doel om die beste moontlike vegter te word. Buiten sport studeer Dylan tans sakewetenskap deur die Cambridge Universiteit by die GenX College in Kaapstad. Vir Riaan lê sy grootste trots nie in sy seun se prestasies as vegter nie, maar in sy karakter. Hy beskryf Dylan as iemand met ’n sagte hart wat vinnig is om ander te help. Geloof en dissipline speel volgens Riaan ’n sentrale rol by die huis en in die gymnasium. “Ons probeer altyd beter doen vandag as wat ons gister gedoen het.” Nou kry Dylan ná die teleurstelling van die vorige wêreldkampioenskap nog ’n kans om die wêreldverhoog te betree – dié keer in Italië, met Suid-Afrika se naam op sy rug.

Só gesels die Wellingtonse fotograaf Willem Mulder, wie se foto-uitstalling “Woordsketsers” by die 15de Tuin van Digters-fees by die Breytenbach Sentrum op Wellington te sien sal wees. Onder die bekendes wat hy in die altesaam 15 portret- en geleentheidsfoto’s in die uitstalling vasgevang het, is Antjie Krog, Anton Goossen, Ian Robberts, Gert Vlok Nel en Koos Kombuis. Oor die naam van sy uitstalling, sê hy: “Ons word groot met woorde. Dit verwoord ons eerste liefde, en gee sin aan wat ons vir mekaar wil oordra. Met hierdie versameling portretstudies wil ek eer bring aan ons lewende woordsketsers wat vir ons wys dat ons nie alleen is nie.” Mulder woon die afgelope vyf jaar in Wellington. Heelwat van die foto’s in die uitstalling is daarom tydens geleenthede in die Breytenbach Sentrum, of in die ATKV Bordienghuis Teater op die terrein geneem. Onlangs het hy as fotograaf vir die regisseur Niel van Deventer met ’n musiekvideo van Anton Goossen se “Bly by my (my lief)” gehelp. Dit is ’n toonsetting van ’n Antjie Krog-gedig. Pas het hy ook foto’s geneem vir Wie ein Fahrrad im Gegenlicht (oftewel “Soos n fiets teen die lig”), ’n Duitse bundel wat gedigte uit drie van die digter Charl-Pierre Naude se bundels sal bevat. Mulder het in Stellenbosch grootgeword en sy eerste kamera op 19-jarige ouderdom gekry, in ’n tyd toe filmkameras nog die norm was. Gou het ’n beter Pentax gevolg. Oor die jare het hy ’n gereelde gesig agter die kamera by Bolandse en Kaapse musiekvertonings of teaterproduksies geword, of in woordmakers se huise. Benewens sy swart-en-wit portretstudies en straattonele is Mulder ook bekend vir sy dramatiese volkleur landskapstonele van veral Wellington en die Tankwa-Karoo. “Monochroom het nog altyd vir my

uitgestaan, vandat ek as 15- of 16-jarige die eerste keer op die fotograaf Cloete Breytenbach se werk afgekom het. Later het die monochroom landskappe van Ansel Adams en die foto’s van Santu Mofkeng en die tydskrif Life gevolg. Swart-en-wit gee net vir my meer karakter en fokus aan ’n beeld,” vertel hy. Sy uitstalling sal in die Cloete Gemeenskapsgalery in die Breytenbach Sentrum van 11 September te sien wees, as deel van die Tuin van Digters-fees. Haar vier drieë het haar persoonlike seisoentotaal op ’n indrukwekkende 12 drieë te staan gebring. Zanilee Fransman en Shauntay Small het elk twee drieë gedruk, terwyl Rene Orian, Danielle Cronje, Farren Poole en Maudeen Dampies ook hul name op die telbord geplaas het. Met die Roses-aanval wat aanhoudend momentum opgebou het, het Candice Esau drie doelskoppe suksesvol deur die pale gestuur, terwyl Dampies nog twee bygevoeg het. Vir Williams was die groot oorwinning ’n besonderse manier om ’n

seisoen af te sluit waarin sy haarself as een van Roses se gevaarlikste aanvallers gevestig het. Sy skryf haar sukses egter nie bloot aan individuele talent toe nie, maar aan haar geloof, haar liefde vir rugby en die rol wat Roses United in haar ontwikkeling gespeel het. “Eerstens vat ek God saam met my in elke wedstryd. Elke wedstryd is vir my iets groots, want elke dag wou ek ’n bal op ’n rugbyveld vashou,” het Williams gesê. Hoewel sy bewus is van haar vermoëns met die bal in die hand, bly haar benadering volgens haar gefokus op die span se wedstrydplan en haar verantwoordelikhede op die veld.
