Cape AmalgamatedTaxi Association (Cata) president Siviwe Kiva (42) appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ CourtonMonday (8 June), where his schedule 6bail application was due to commence.
According to Eric Ntabazalilla, Communications Manager of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape, the matter was rolled over to yesterday (10June) forarguments by the state anddefence Aschedule 6bail application involves serious crimes where bail is granted only in exceptional circumstances
These include crimes such as murder, aggravated rape and armed robbery. In such cases the burden of proof lies on the accused to convince the court that exceptional circumstances exist that justify his or her release.
According to the charge sheet Kiva faces one countofmurder in connection withthe death of Odwa Kohli,who waskilled, or hiskilling was allegedly arranged by Kiva on 27 November 2023 in or near Drommedaris Street, Mbekweni.
Kiva was being represented by William Fullard of Mathewson Gess Attorneys in Cape Town.

Amajor breakthrough in the fight against HIV has arrived in the Western Cape, with the provincial health department launching thephased rollout of Lenacapavir, along-acting prevention injection that offersprotection against HIV for up tosix monthsata time.
The new medication is expected to expand prevention optionsfor peopleat riskofinfection and strengthen efforts to reduce newHIV cases across the province.
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness on Monday(8June) commencedthe phasedintroduction of Lenacapavir, aform of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) that helps prevent HIVinfection and provides an alternative to daily oral PrEPfor eligible individuals.
Western Cape Minister of Healthand Wellness, MireilleWenger,described the introduction of Lenacapavir asone ofthe most significant developmentsinHIV prevention in recent years.
"The rolloutofLenacapavir represents amajor scientific breakthrough in HIV prevention, one of the most significant advancesinthe fieldinrecent years, and givesusanother opportunitytostrengthen HIV prevention in our communities. It expands the choices available topeople who may benefit from along-acting prevention optionand brings us one step closer to afuture with fewer newinfections," said Wenger.
Sheadded that while HIV treatmenthas transformed millions of lives, preventing new infections remains akey priority.
"Formore than two decades, South Africans have shown what is possible when communities, healthcare workers, researchers and government work together. While treatmenthas transformedmillions of lives, preventing new infections remains one of our most important priorities," Wengersaid.
Health officials stressed that it is nota vaccine, but along-acting HIVprevention medicine thatoffersanalternative todaily oralPrEP.
The first phase of the rollout took place
at 22 healthcare facilities serving communitieswith the highest HIVburden in the province. The phased approach is intended toensure thatavailable supplies reach those most likely to benefit while implementation systems are established and monitored.
PaarlPost reached out to the department asking if Lenacapavir will be available at any clinics within the Cape Winelands region.Shimoney Regter, aspokespersonfor thedepartment, confirmed howeverthat thismedication is notyet available at local clinics here.
"Phase 1currently includes 22 facilities, primarily in the Cape Metro. In addition, alimited number of additional supported sites, including the George area in the Garden Route district, are set to be brought online early as part of partner-supported implementation. The programmewill expand in phases, with further implementation from April 2027 andfollows the National Department of Health’s guidance. We will continue to provide updatesasthe programme evolves."
However, Regter says the department remains committed to providing access to a range ofHIV preventionoptions. "These include condoms, daily oral PrEP,post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), andother prevention services, which continue to be widely available at public health facilities across the province, including Cape Winelands."
Dr KeithCloete, Head of Department for Healthand Wellness, said the department would continue to assess opportunities to expand access as additional supplies becomeavailable.
Provincial Council on AIDS and TB Co-Chairperson Amelia Mfiki welcomed theintroduction of Lenacapavir, sayingit would provide people with more prevention choices.
"Different people require different prevention options. Forsome,asix-monthly injection may be easier to manage than takingadaily pill. Whatmatters most is that people are empowered to make informed decisions about their health and haveaccess to preventionchoices that suit their lives," shesaid.

trips recorded in the province.
According to Meyer, the Western Cape continues to achieve the highest averagespend per trip nationally. Despite growing travel volumes, however, tourism spending hasdeclined.
Nationally, trips increased by 11.1% to 44.7 million,while overall expenditure dropped by 18.5%, bringing average spending per trip down to R2 498. Meyer said the challenge facing the tourism sector is to convert increasing travel activity into greater economic benefit for local communities. More than53% of domestic trips involve visits to friends and relatives, while over70% of travellers staywith family members during their travels.
Meyer said this presents an opportunity for Paarl andthe wider Drakenstein Valleyto encourage visitors to spend more on local attractions, experiences andservices.
“Regions like Paarland Drakenstein are already showing how partnerships, local experiences
andcommunity-based tourism initiatives can unlock economic value,”hesaid. He commended local tourism stakeholders for driving inclusivegrowth through strategic partnerships, including collaborations between thePaarl Wine Routeand Franschhoek, community-based tourism projects,affordable travel packages, year-round eventsand festivals, andoutdoor tourism offerings.

Karin Hougaard, Anna Davel, Ilse Klink, Andriëtte Norman, Stephanie Baartman en Gracia Louwisvan die vrouestemme wat op Saterdag 4Julie die verhoog vir die ATKV-Crescendo Goud: Divas in Afrikaans by die Daisy Jones-teater op die Summerhill-landgoed in Stellenbosch betree. Saam methulle tree ’n jonger geslag Crescendo-stemme op, onder wie Lizl Simoes, Tamryn Madalé en Janine Fourie, in ’n konsert wathulde bring aan die vroue wat oor 52 jaar uit Crescendo gegroei het en die oorspronklike Afrikaanse musiek watuit hul stemme, penne en stories gebore is.
Volgens Morné Ayeni, die projekkoördineerder van Crescendo, is die gedagte agter die konsert om erkenning te gee aan die groot rol wat vroue in Crescendo se geskiedenis gespeel het.
“’nMagdom musiek is oor 52 jaar binne Crescendo geskep en ’n groot deel daarvan komuit vroue se penne en stemme,” sê Ayeni. “Ons wil nie net huldebring aan die sielryke stemme nie, maar ook aan die pragtige, oorspronklike Afrikaanse musiek wat deur vroue in Crescendogeskep is.”
