THE Central Special Rating Area(SRA),a non-profit organisation run by volunteersand supportedbyhomeowners, has been taking proactivesteps to addressneglected buildings andimprove safety in the area.
Coveringthe area between RinkStreet, Russel Road, Donkinand the BaakensValley, the SRAhas dealt withseveral problem buildings
“A few years back, there were manyproblem buildingsinthat area. Some were sold and redone into student accommodation,” saidDavid Edwards, chairpersonofthe Central SRA.
“We havehelped in the pastownerstohave buildings renovated and assisted with demolition and getting approvals.Therewas abuilding taken down in Hout Street. When it comes to problem buildings in the Central Special Rating Area, not many are left.”
Last week, the SRA secured an abandoned building on Prospect Hill.
“There is adispute on who owns thatbuilding, and it has outstanding municipal bills,”he explained
“The bylaws allow the municipality to take actiononbuildingsthat are neglected and abandoned. Unfortunately, it takes time, though, and we have not seen it successfully implemented.”
As atemporary solution, CentralSRA bricked up the front of the building to make sure it asafer spacefor the St Augustine Church and St Augustine School
“We brickedituptostop easy access and criminal activity. Sincewe’ve done it, in the pastfew days, the principalhas said there has been asignificant improvement,” Edwards shared. “I think as atemporary solution, it has solvedthatproblem.”
TheCentral SRA also focuses on improving overall safetyand cleanliness in the area.
“We have 75 cameras, monitored by the Citywide controlroom and armed vehicles patrolling 24/7,” Edwards explained of their pro-
active measures to reducecrime.
“We have seen areduction in crimereported, and if only more people implemented aproactive approach in their area, they could alsosee the improvement.”
Formed as anon-profit associationunder municipal regulations, the Central SRAoperates with ateam of volunteers and employees
“We are an Association not for gain, agroup of directors who are volunteerswho want to see improvement in the area. We alsohave ateam headed up by an operations manager with six employees doing waste management.”
According to Edwards, several tons of waste aretaken out of the area and disposed of at the municipal tip per month.
The SRA also runs community initiatives such as heritagetours.
“On amonthly basis, we sponsor aheritage walk, where we have atourguide retained forathree- to four-hour walkaround Central, providing historical information,”Edwards shared.
“The publiciswelcome to come to an activity that is free of charge and safe with security provided on the day.”
Other planned monthly activities include Saturday clean-ups.
ACONCERNED mother from Gqeberha says her adult daughter has been left without vital psychiatric medication for weeks, highlighting fears that supply problems in the Eastern Cape health system are affecting vulnerable patients.
The local mother, who asked to remain anonymous, told PE Express that her daughter relies on antipsychoticmedication prescribed afteranervous breakdown.
However, attempts to obtain the medication from localhospital pharmacies, clinicsand privatechemists have been unsuccessful.
“We were told they don’t have stock because the government has not purchased the tablets,” shesaid.
Themedicationiscommonly used to treat
that psychiatric patients don’t have their medication,”she said.
Themedicationhas reportedly been unavailable since January, leaving families anxious about theconsequences forpeople who depend on treatment to remain stable.
Concerns about shortages come as pressure mounts on the Eastern Cape Department of Health over millions of rand owed to suppliers. In January, the Democratic Alliance securedunanimous support in the provincial legislature for amotion compelling urgent action on unpaid health suppliers, including a debt of about R90 million to medical gascompany Afrox.
DA Shadow MEC forHealth, Jane Cowley, said themotion was aimed at forcing accountability.
“The resolutions forcethe executive to ac-
department’sunpaid invoices runinto the billions.
Under the adopted resolutions, MECfor Health, Ntandokazi Capa, must establish a multidisciplinary task team to ensurehospitals continue receiving essential supplies suchas medical gas. TheMEC is also requiredtotable adetailed payment planoutlining how the department will settle outstanding invoices
In addition, Premier Oscar Mabuyane must report on steps to bring the department onto the “Have IBeen Paid?”platform, asystem aimed at improving payment transparency for suppliers.
“These resolutions create clear executive obligations to stabilise hospital services, protect businesses in the health supply chain, and end
acultureofdelayed payment,” Cowley said For families already struggling to accessessentialmedication, however, the crisis is more than apolitical debate.
“Paying suppliersontimekeeps wards open, protects jobs, and safeguards patient lives,” Cowley said
“A unanimous vote means everyparty accepted thesesteps. Now the executive must deliver.”
Themother saidthe shortages aredeeply worrying. “People depend on these tablets to live normal lives,” shesaid.
The PE Express reached out to the Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson, Siyanda Manana, but no feedback was received at thetimeofgoing to print on Monday.

SEVERAL former members and leaders of ActionSA in Nelson Mandela Bay have joined the Democratic Alliance (DA),a move that both partiessay reflects shifting political dynamics ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The DA in the Eastern Cape announced this week that it had welcomed anumber of former ActionSA members, including regional leaders, into its ranks.
According to the DA, the new members include ActionSA Nelson Mandela Bay regional chairperson, Sherwin Nel, former provincial spokesperson, Luzuko Gedze, and ActionSA Kariega sub-regionalchairperson,Sinclair Baatjies.
DA EasternCape provincial leader, Andrew Whitfield, said the move strengthens the party’s prospects in the metro.
“The Democratic Alliance(DA)
in the Eastern Cape haswelcomed several former leading figures and members of ActionSA in NelsonMandela Baytothe party,” Whitfield said.
Whitfield saidthe announcement was made alongside DA Eastern Cape provincial chairperson Yusuf Cassim, DA Nelson MandelaBay mayoral candidate, Retief Odendaal, and DA Winterhoek constituency leader,Horatio Hendricks.
“Our newest membersbelieve that uniting behind agrowing DA is the onlyway to get Nelson Mandela Bayworking again,” he said.
“They recognisethe DA’s strong track record of excellent service delivery where wegovern, and our proven abilitytodeliver meaningful change for all.”
Whitfield added that the party believes the additions will strengthen its efforts to regain controlof the metro
“Under the DA banner, we are confident thatwecan win Nelson
Mandela Bay in 2026 and restore effective governance and excellent servicedelivery.”
He further said the party remains open to membersofother organisations who share its values.
“The DA in the Eastern Cape will continue to serve as apolitical home formembers of other parties who share our values and principles, and we will gladly welcome them into our ranks.”
ActionSAchief whip in the National Assembly and former Nelson Mandela Bay executivemayor,Athol Trollip, acknowledged that some individuals had left the party, but said such shifts arenot unusual in politics.
“ActionSA is disappointed that recently current membershave left the organisation,” Trollip said.
“Essentially, politics is about making choices; people join political parties voluntarily or freely and leavethem voluntarily or freely and in this case, some of
the members left ActionSAatthe conclusionofthe lastelection, perhaps disappointed that they themselvesdidn’tget elected and othershave left on theeve of this election, thelocal government election.”
Trollip said thepartyhad taken astrategic decision about where it would contest elections.
“Weasapartyhavesaid we will only contest municipalities where there are existing vibrant membership and branch structures. Now we havebeen battling to achieve thatinNelson Mandela Baysomaybe people haveidentifiedgreener pastures and we wish themwell.”
He addedthat building anew political party wasa challenging process.
“What we as ActionSA are trying to do is very difficult, where anew political organisation is trying to offervoters something different from theexistingpolitical role players that havebeen around forthe last 30 years and
havenot been able to deliveron thefullpotential that this country holds.”
“So, people will come and go, and that is unfortunate, but we are determined to stay thecourse and to give theelectoratesomething different to votefor.”
Trollip also suggested that not allindividualswho joined theDA were currently activeActionSA members.
“Some of themembers paraded left ActionSA forother political formations afterthe last election, so they are technically not current members butformer members. Others might have been supporters butaren’t registered ActionSA members,” he said.
“Having said that, though, it is unfortunate.”
He said political shifts arecommon in the periodleading up to elections.“It’sthat season before elections wherepeople make determinationsabout wherethey thinkthe grassisgreener for their prospects.”
Former members and leaders of ActionSA inNelsonMandela Bay have joined the Democratic Alliance(DA).

Two-year-old fillies in the Greeff stable have been producingwonderfulperformancesinrecent times, and it could be more of the same in Friday’s race over 1200m. Anotherdanceforme was an impressive winner of the Nursery last year, Splicethemainbrace won it the year before, and LunaHalo was the Greeff winner in 2023
All these winners were ridden to victory by top Cape Town-based jockey Richard Fourie, who has been dominating the jockeyranks at Fairview over the last three seasons.
