Suid-Afrika se Masterchef-wenner Andrew Benjamin, oftewel Benjie Baby soos hy op die televisieprogram bekend gestaan het, het Woensdag in Kimberley tuisgekom nadat hy op Sondagaand 16 Augustus in die eindronde van die jongste Masterchef-tuiskok-kookkompetisie koning gekraai het oor die naaswenner, Candice Meth van KwaZulu-Natal.

Benjamin en Meth het 120 minute gekry om ’n driegangmaaltyd te berei wat hul reis in die kompetisie weerspieël. Benjamin het pangebraaide salm met preie en ’n witwynsous as sy voorgereg bedien; gevolg deur varkpens met vinkel-en-appelpuree, ertjiemoes en ’n rooiwyn-jus. Vir nagereg het hy ’n meringue, vanielje-sponskoek, sjokoladeroom-pâtissière met framboos coulis en vanieljeroomys bedien. Dié Kimberliet wat aan die Laerskool en Hoërskool Homevale skoolgegaan het, het al kleintyd saam met sy ouma Aletta Benjamin in die kombuis gekook. Hy het ’n plakboek gemaak en resepte daarin geplak en geskryf. “Ongelukkig was daar nie geld om ná matriek na ’n sjefskool in Bloemfontein te gaan vir verdere studie nie,” vertel hy.

Hy het toe ’n elektrisiën geword, en werk steeds by Eskom; deesdae in die Nasionale Transmissie-maatskappy van Suid-Afrika (NTCSA). Hy kon aan die einde van verlede jaar, toe die episodes opgeneem is, vooruit verlof vat. “Ek is gek oor my werk as elektrisiën, én mal oor kook. Ek bied van tyd tot tyd opwip-restaurant-etes by die McGregormuseum se Dunluce House-museum, waarmee ek sal aanhou.” Hy gaan sy prysgeld van meer as R1 miljoen gebruik om sy kombuis op te knap, op aandrang van sy vrou, Salomé. “Ek sal haar en ons kinders, tweeling Andrew en Alicia (8), en seun Allistair (5), ook bederf met ’n wegbreek-vakansie en presente. Hulle sê hulle moet beloon word omdat hulle agt maande lank moes stilbly daaroor dat ek die wenner is. “My gesin was op die TV-stel met opname van die laaste twee episodes, wat wonderlik was. Sou ek verloor, sou hulle leer en besef dit is deel van die lewe.” Sy werkmense het heeltyd probeer uitvis wie die wenner was, “maar ek het hulle gesê ek het vergeet.” Sy eerste verskyning in ’n TV-kookprogram was met kykNET se Kokkedoor: Vuur en Vlam. “Ek het ingeskryf omdat my skoonma gedink het ek kan lekker vleis braai. Dit was wonderlik om saam met ervare sjefs te werk; ek het geweldig baie geleer.” Hy was die naaswenner in dié reeks. Benjie se forte is kosmaak oor ’n oop vuur. Een van sy kenmerkende geregte is

Ek het strategieë ontwikkel om my tyd doeltreffend te bestuur en geleer ek moet geregte gelyktydig gaarmaak en vooraf goed voorbereiding doen. “Die laaste episode was uiters stresvol. Mense het opgemerk dat ek baie kalm voorkom, maar ek het geweet ek moes my absolute beste lewer om ’n droom waar te maak.” Hy sê hy sal ’n balans vind tussen sy werk en sy passie vir kosmaak. “Ek sal voortgaan met die opwiprestaurant. Wat ek veral wil doen, is ’n platform bied vir klein voedselprodusente om hul bestanddele te gebruik en om sjeftalent in die Noord-Kaap te vertoon.”

‘Yellow Fleet’ idle as city crumbles CHARNÉ KEMP The EFF in the Northern Cape have raised an alarm over the whereabouts and utilisation of the provincial government’s new R98 million “Yellow Fleet,” claiming the machinery has been sitting idle since its high-profile launch just one month ago. In a statement released on 14 August the EFF claimed that the entire fleet, purchased with public funds to repair potholes and maintain gravel roads, is currently parked at the Frances Baard District Municipality offices rather than being deployed to the city’s deteriorating streets. Shadrack Tlhaole, provincial leader, expressed concern that this latest investment is following a pattern of “maladministration” and “costly optics.” The party pointed out that a previous R28 million fleet launched in 2011 reportedly failed to fix a single pothole in the five years following its unveiling. The party is demanding a public accounting of the fleet’s maintenance, fuel, and staffing budgets, threatening to involve the Auditor-General (AG) if no satisfactory explanation is provided. Cabinet reshuffled amid infrastructure concerns CHARNÉ KEMP Premier Dr Zamani Saul announced a reshuffling of the Northern Cape Executive Council late Friday afternoon, 14 August, following the resignation of Fufe Makatong, the former MEC for Roads and Public Works. The move comes at a critical time as the government faces mounting pressure over stalled infrastructure projects and the efficacy of its road maintenance campaigns. The reshuffle sees Bentley Vass moving from Cooperative Governance to take over the high-pressure Roads and Public Works portfolio. Other appointments include Lebogang Motlhaping to the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), and Newreen Klaaste, the former speaker of the provincial legislature, as the new MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform. Mirriam Kibi has been appointed to the premier’s office to oversee Children, Women, Youth, and Persons living with Disabilities. Saul challenged the notion of his “interference” in department, which Makatong allegedly cited in her resignation, stating that his role involves “vigorous oversight” and “intervention” when targets are not met. A central point of contention remains the upgrading of the Mamatwan road between Kathu and Hotazel. Despite an initial investment of about R200 million (with R147 million specifically cited as “unaccounted for” or wasted due to delays), the road remains in a state of “mess,” Saul said. He revealed that the project, a 60/40 partnership between mining houses and the provincial government, has been plagued by irregular appointments and lost court cases, which forced the project to

DA MPL Isak Fritz issued a blistering response to the appointments, particularly questioning the track record of the moved MECs. Fritz noted that Vass’ record at Coghsta “fills one with trepidation,” citing his failure to deliver on a pivotal R1 billion housing project where only 480 of 6 500 promised homes were delivered. Contractors spoke of frustration with flawed geotechnical reports issued by the department, which delayed much-needed homes and contributed to the unnecessary escalation of construction costs, while the persistent non-payment of contractors forced individuals into bankruptcy. Furthermore, the DA characterised Motlhaping as having “much experience of being an MEC, but no experience of being effective” across his previous portfolios. “The latest cabinet reshuffle is the desperate rearranging of deckchairs on a sinking ship. “The decisions announced by the premier seem motivated by political infighting rather than a genuine desire to improve service delivery, and the Northern Cape deserves better than this,” the DA stated.

Learning to plough back More than 1 000 learners of two Kimberley schools are acquiring the knowledge and practical skills needed to care for their school environment and contribute to a healthier, more resilient community through a newly launched environmental learning and action programme delivered in partnership with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) Eco-Schools. Funded by Droogfontein Solar Power, the programme officially launched at the Waterworks Primary School and the Beacon Primary School. It involves a range of initiatives, involving topics such as environmental education, ecoclub establishment, recycling, food gardens, composting, waste reduction, upcycling, ecobrick projects and learner-led green business opportunities. Here learners of Waterworks Primary are having fun with a practical composting lesson. This iconic image of a little boy playing a mouth organ (more commonly known as a harmonica) was taken in about 1908 at Mauritzfontein, the Oppenheimer family’s stud farm outside Kimberley. The subject is “Mooi,” the ﬁve-year-old son of staff employed by the Herring family who lived at Mauritzfontein. The boy was called “Boetie”, but gave himself the name “Mooi” after seeing his face in a mirror. As an adult he worked in a butcher shop and then in a mine at Brakpan. In 1941 he was presented with a copy of his youthful portrait. Little gem With cellphones capable of taking photos since the year 2000, with a built-in 0.1-megapixel camera producing heavily pixelated, grainy photos, the art of photography is no longer restricted to those with professional high-end cameras at their disposal. On 19 August every year, World Photography Day is observed as part of World Photography Week, stretching from 12 to 26 August. This year the theme is “Home”. Before snapping a few shots in seconds, indulge in these facts: ■ The ﬁrst photograph ever taken, by a French scientist in 1826, took eight hours to capture because of the long exposure needed. ■ Some of the most popular subjects of photography in the 1800s were corpses. Many individuals were photographed after their death, and it was not uncommon to have a deceased family member set up as part of the family photo. ■ Chemicals used for the development of photos and for ﬂashes used to be extremely dangerous, leading to illness and sometimes the death of photographers. – Source: photoion.co.uk

Op ’n dag gebeur dit: Iemand noem jou “oom” of “tannie”. ’n Gevoel van verontwaardiging is gewoonlik die eerste wat beleef word. Hoe durf iemand jou so noem? Want al het die verjaardae fluks hul pad tot ver verby die 50-jaar-merk gestap, is jy g’n oud of iemand se oom of tannie nie. Dan gebeur dit weer. En weer. Dalk is dit die aanvaarding wat ouderdom bring, maar later stribbel jy nie teë nie, en jy kry dit reg om dié nare woorde nie te hoor nie. Op ’n dag vra iemand jou, gewoonlik met ’n betaalslag iewers: “Kwalifiseer u al vir pensioenafslag?” Weereens verontwaardiging, want lyk ek dan só oud, wil jy vra? Maar jy hap na lug en sluk jou woorde. Jy onthou waar jou ouderdom trek, en jy onthou die gesig van die gryskopmens – glad nie meer ’n kuiken nie, hoor – wat jy die oggend in die spieël gesien het. Jy dink aan jou ouers, hoe hulle gelyk het en waarmee hulle te doene gehad het toe hulle so oud was soos jy nou – toe jy geglo het hulle was stokoud. En jy weet: Indien jy die lewe hou, is die laat

sestigs net hier op die voorstoep, die sewentigs op die stoeptrap, en die tagtigs kom reeds in die tuinpaadjie aan. Hulle kom vanself aan, jy hoef hulle nie te nooi nie. Ongeag daarvan dat jy glo jy jouself “opgepas” het en onheilige en ongesonde gewoontes sover moontlik vermy het, weet jy nie hoe die jare jou gaan behandel nie. Ook dié wat vroeër met slegte gewoontes aan die hand graag gesê het: “Ag, mens kan nie gesond doodgaan nie”, sluk dié woorde vinnig soos glase vol gaskoeldrank af, want die pyne en kwale het geluister en sommer ’n hele busvol by jou afgelaai. Boonop vang jy jouself dat jy dinge vergeet, stadiger word, gesprekke herhaal en graag wyshede uitdeel. Op Vrydag 21 Augustus vind Wêrelddag vir Senior Burgers plaas om die bydraes, prestasies en wysheid van ouer volwassenes te erken, en om bewustheid te skep oor die mishandeling en uitbuiting van bejaardes, asook hul unieke gesondheidskwessies en welstand. Mag dit ook ’n dag wees waarop elkeen wat jonger as ’n bejaarde is se ingestelheid teenoor seniors só verander dat jou optrede dit weerspieël van hoe jy eendag behandel wil word.

Laat vergeet hand aan hand gaan met onthou HANNES NOËTH Verlede week toe skryf ek oor hoe wonderlik die gawe is om te kan en te mag onthou. Hoe kosbaar dit is om te kan terugdink aan mooi en goeie tye en soms ook aan die slegte tye. Hy bel my uit die Noord-Kaap. Sommer toe hy begin gesels, kan ek agterkom ek en hy sal oor ’n skaapkop heerlik kan kuier. Ons gesels dadelik asof ons mekaar jare ken. Hy het baie moeite gedoen om my nommer te kry. Hy wil graag gesels oor wat ek geskryf het. Hy onthou ook baie mooi hier van sy groot-

word plaas, van familie wat oorlede is, van mense en tye en plekke. Maar dit is nie hoekom hy my bel nie. Hy wil nie daaroor gesels nie. Hy wil my boodskap so ’n bietjie verder vat. As ek wil, kan ek dit skryf. Ek wil. Daarom skryf ek dit. Wat ek geskryf het, sê hy, is belangrik, maar daar is meer. Hy stem met my saam. Onthou is mooi. Onthou is goed. Onthou moet gekoester word. Daar is wel iets wat net so groot is. Hy hou my aan die raai. Ek is later doodnuuskierig oor wat hierdie belangrike saak is wat groter is as om te onthou.

Ewe skielik kom hy tot sy punt. ’n Belangrike punt. “Hannes, jy is reg, die gawe van onthou is groot en goed. Maar die gawe van vergeet, is net so belangrik. Soms selfs groter.” Hy vier môre sy 92ste verjaardag. Hy hou van onthou, maar soms wens hy dat hy kon vergeet. Van mense wat hom te na gekom het, van gebeure wat seergemaak het, van tye toe dinge verkeerd geloop het. Hy vat saam. Onthou is belangrik. Om te kan vergeet, is net so belangrik. As jy wil onthou, moet jy ook die gawe wil hê om te vergeet. Ek leer by hom. Soms moet ’n mens wil vergeet.

“As jy slim kinders wil hê, moet jy met ’n slim vrou trou,” sê hy. Daar gaan mans wees wat van hom verskil. Daar gaan mans wees wat met hom saamstem. Alle vroue gaan met hom saamstem. Hy neem hierdie stelling van hom baie ernstig op en dit kan, volgens hom, gestaaf word. In die eerste paar jare van ’n kind se lewe bring hulle gewoonlik meer tyd saam met die ma as saam met die pa deur. Om hulle na die beste van hul vermoë te laat ontwikkel, moet kinders gestimuleer word. As die ma ’n slim mens is, is die kans goed dat ’n kind baie goed gestimuleer gaan word – en eindelik slim sal wees. Dieselfde geld vir ’n ma met logika. Sy redenasie maak in ’n groot mate sin. Deur die jare het ek op hierdie stelling probeer let. Dit is nie in alle gevalle van toepassing nie, maar daar is

beslis ’n patroon te bespeur. Daar is baie faktore wat tot ’n kind se ontwikkeling bydra. Iemand anders verwys nie net na die slim ma nie, maar ook na die voorbeeld wat vir ’n kind gestel word. Woorde wek, maar voorbeelde trek, lui die spreekwoord. As ’n kind te midde van baie slegte voorbeelde grootgeword het, gebeur een van twee dinge. Die kind volg dieselfde pad; of die kind besluit om heeltemal die teenoorgestelde pad te volg. Ongelukkig is dieselfde pad in baie gevalle die bekendste en dus die maklikste pad. Dalk stem jy met albei die bogenoemde stellings saam. Dalk nie. Soveel mense, soveel kombinasies van huwelike. Baie mense het baie slim kinders. Dit verbeter die kans dat hulle kinders ook slim kinders gaan hê. Of jy met die stelling saamstem, of nie, waarom die kans waag? Trou met ’n slim vrou.

GERDA-MARIÉ VAN ROOYEN Rooyma se boervrou-vriendin het Mzansi vir die States verruil danksy ’n H-2A-visum. Sy sou nege maande uitstedig wees. Voor die halfpadmerk kom die skoknuus: Sy gaan nie weer terugkeer nie. Haar 18-uur-skof laat min tyd vir ’n WhatsApp-gesprek. Boervrou – eerder ’n plaasentrepreneur en nie bloot boer se vrou nie – het nooit met leë hande gekom nie. Ook nie sonder ’n onbaatsugtige oor of ’n welkome skouer nie. Tussen die bekers koffie het die gesprekke gewentel van houtwerk en oefenwenke tot toekomsdrome en selfs bek-en-klouseer. Daar was altyd iets om te vertel, iets om oor te lag, iets om te deel. Min sou Rooyma weet dat daar ’n einde aan hierdie “glitters” sou kom. ChatGPT adviseer: “Onthou die goeie oomblikke en waardeer die mense wat steeds in jou binnekring is.” Rooyma is opnuut dankbaar. Dankbaar vir die vriendin wat steeds ’n koppie tee aanbied, haar in ’n penarie laat sit en glo dat Rooyma haar kan help. Dankbaar vir die een wat op kort kennisgewing wil kom inloer. Want dalk is dit wat ’n kaktus haar leer: Nie alles wat ver van jou af groei, verdor omdat dit vergeet is nie. Party dinge oorleef net op ’n ander plek. En party vriendskappe laat, selfs nadat hulle verdwyn het, ’n groen blaartjie agter wat jou herinner hoe mooi dit was om hulle te hê.

High school learners’ mascot designs awaited South Africa has never had a formal symbol to represent its national space programme. That is about to change, with the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) launching a competition inviting high school learners to design the country’s first official space mascot. Open to learners in Gr. 8 to Gr. 11 at registered public, independent and home schools across South Africa, the competition invites entrants to submit an original mascot design, together with a short written explanation, through the official online entry portal by midnight on 14 September. No prior design experience or training is required. The winning design will be professionally developed into Sansa’s official mascot for use at schools, youth outreach events and public engagements across the country. Sansa is the national agency responsible for promoting the peaceful use of space and advancing space science, technology and innovation for the benefit of South Africa. NUWE STEMME ONTGIN Die Jakes Gerwel-stigting, in samewerking met die Sentrum vir Kreatiewe Skryfkunde en Afrikatale, bied vanjaar van 14 tot 16 Oktober ’n gratis werksessie vir ontluikende Afrikaanse skrywers, digters en dramaturge aan by die Sol Plaatje-universiteit (SPU) in Kimberley. Die fokus van die projek is om nuwe skrywerstemme te ontdek en stories, gedigte en toneelstukke te ontwikkel wat die Suid-Afrikaanse letterkunde verryk. Veral word gesoek na verhale oor gemeenskappe wat nog nie voldoende oopgeskryf is nie. Dié geleentheid sluit aan by die breër visie van die Jakes Gerwel-stigting, wat gestig is ter herdenking aan wyle prof. Gert Johannes (Jakes) Gerwel. Die stigting is deur sy weduwee, Phoebe Gerwel, in die lewe geroep om sy erfenis en ideale, asook maatskaplike transformasie, te bevorder. Enige aandag is hul kos Hiermee die volgende aflewering in ’n reeks wat ’n Noord-Kapenaar oor die lewe saam met ’n narsistiese ma geskryf het. Lees vorige aflewerings onder “Opinion” op novanews.co.za/ noordkaapbulletin. Dit is ongeveer ’n maand voor my pa se afsterwe. Hy het sy heup gebreek en ’n gedeeltelike heupvervanging gekry. Daarna is hy na ’n rehabilitasie-eenheid oorgeplaas. Die dag nadat hy sy heup gebreek het, het hy my vanuit die hospitaal gebel om my met my verjaardag geluk te wens. Dit is hoe ek van sy val uitgevind het – geen oproep van my ma om ons te laat weet nie. In die dae ná sy operasie het ek haar geskakel, maar sy het nie geantwoord nie. Daarna het ek met hospitaalpersoneel gepraat wat my op die hoogte van my pa se vordering gebring het. Byna twee weke nadat hy sy heup gebreek het, het my ma my die eerste keer geskakel. Die enigste doel vir haar oproep was om te hoor of ons geld vir my pa se versorging sou bydra wanneer hy ontslaan word. Ek het geen geheim van my ontsteltenis gemaak nie. Ek was kwaad. Ek wou weet waarom sy ons nie laat weet het nie. Ek wou weet waarom sy nie my oproepe antwoord nie. “Jy het net een probleem in hierdie lewe,” het sy my kortgeknip. Ek het stilgebly en gewag. Sy gaan my in elk geval sê. “Jy wil altyd ‘the centre of attention’ wees,” het sy vurig gesê.

Ek het diep asemgehaal en gesluk. Dit gaan my nie eens in die minste ontstel nie. Narsiste projekteer hul probleme op hul slagoffers. Dit wat hulle weet hulle verkeerd doen, is nie eintlik húl probleem nie; dit is hul slagoffers se probleem. Hulle, wat narsiste is, maak selde ’n fout. En as hulle die dag ’n fout maak, neem hulle geen verantwoordelikheid nie. Ek kan hoor sy raak ongemaklik met my stilswye. Wat het sy verwag? Dat ek myself gaan verdedig? Narsiste is aandagvrate. Hulle floreer op aandag – positief of negatief, dit maak aan hulle geen verskil nie. Solank hulle die onderwerp van bespreking is, is hulle gelukkig. As hulle jou so ontstel dat jy aan niks anders kan dink nie, is hulle gelukkig. In hul wêreld bestaan daar net een persoon: die eie ek. Volgens hulle is hulle belangrik. Onvervangbaar. Die beste. Die mooiste. Die slimste. As jy met iemand buite hul hoorafstand gesels, aanvaar hulle dat jy oor hulle praat – selfs al het jy nie. Hulle moet altyd die middelpunt van aandag wees. Die onsigbare dekmantel wat oor emosionele mishandeling hang, veroorsaak dat slagoffers nie herken of gehelp word nie. Jy moet self probeer oorleef. Ek skryf oor hierdie littekens wat ek in my hart ronddra om ’n fisieke bewys te hê van ’n lewe wat ek nie wou leef nie. As dit iemand kan help om uit die wurggreep van narsisme weg te breek, soveel beter.

Griquas top of standings DUSTIN WETDEWICH The Griquas delivered a brutal lesson in forward dominance at the Suzuki Stadium on Friday 14 August, mauling the Sharks into submission with a comprehensive 55 – 21 victory that sent the defending champions surging to the top of the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division standings whilst condemning their coastal visitors to a painful seventh-place reality check. This was a demonstration of setpiece supremacy so complete, that the Sharks had no option but to absorb wave after wave of Northern Cape brutality as their Currie Cup campaign took a significant hit.
