Matthews skuldig aan mo

Sugte van verligting is gehoor en trane het op Donderdag 20 November in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley gevloei toe Alberto Linden Matthews (47) onder meer daaraan skuldig bevind is dat hy sy gewese vrou, Mandy Bailey (43), op 27 Desember 2023 by haar huis in Beaconsfield, Kimberley, met ’n verbode 7.65mm-pistool doodgeskiet het.

Waarnemende regter Danie Olivier het Matthews benewens moord ook skuldig bevind aan twee aanklagte van poging tot moord omdat hy die vuurwapen op twee Bailey-familielede tydens die voorval gerig het Matthews het die vuurwapen probeer afvuur, maar dit het geweier

Matthews het ook die beskermingsbevel wat Bailey teen hom verkry het, oortree Hy is ook skuldig bevind aan die onwettige besit van ’ n vuurwapen waarvan die reeksnommer afgevyl is (verbode handwapen) en ammunisie

Hy is onskuldig bevind aan huisbraak met die doel om ’ n misdryf te pleeg en aan aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer omdat die staat nie sy saak kon bewys nie

Matthews as getuie het sy eie verklaring en weergawes wat aan getuies gestel is, weerspreek wat die regter allermins beïndruk het Vrae oor sy teenstrydighede met ander getuies se weergawes het hy ontwyk of bloot ontken sonder om verder te verduidelik Die regter het ander getuies, onder wie Matthews se niggie, as

Under a blazing Northern Cape sun, a few hundred men and women, mostly dressed in black with a purple accessory, lay down in silence on the square of the Central Campus of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley

This formed part of a nationwide peaceful demonstration, the G20 Women’s Shutdown, from 12:00 on Friday 21 November during which participants lay down for 15 minutes to honour the 15 women murdered daily in the country

The demonstrators wore black as a sign of “mourning and resistance”

Marang Itulemeleng, third-year student at SPU and activist against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), who addressed the crowd, said perpetrators of GBVF were going on as if nothing had happened, while their victims were scared and scarred Several times she asked the rhetorical question “where do you go?” if you cannot go home, to church, to work, or to friends as GBVF can take place at any of these “safe” places

She asked victims to promise themselves to take the courage to stand up and speak up

’n Tyd gelede het iemand vir my iets gesê en ek het daarop reageer. Ek was glad nie kwaad of ongeskik nie, maar die persoon wat aan die ontvangkant was, was sigbaar ontsteld oor my reaksie.

Op my beurt het haar ontsteltenis my ontstel Ons was albei ontsteld Ek het probeer uitpluis waarom ons so ontsteld was, maar kon nie agter die kap van die byl kom nie

Agterna het ’ n persoon wat ons albei ken my daarna uitgevra Omdat ek self nie verstaan het waarom ons albei ontsteld geraak het nie, was dit vir my moeilik om dit verstaanbaar te verduidelik

“Dit is soos om iemand skrik te maak,” het ek ingedagte gesê Die persoon het in stille afwagting my aangestaar Daar was geen teken van enige emosie op sy gesig te bespeur nie

Ek wou ’ n skrywer word, maar wou nie nuus skryf nie Ek wou stories vertel met helde en gelukkige eindes en mooi meisies Stories waarin net die “bad guys ” seerkry en kinders kan speel sonder vrees om seergemaak te word Waar mense in vrede saam lewe Toe beland ek in die joernalistiek Omdat ek van ’ n klein dorpie af kom, was ek baie beskerm teen die wreedheid van die lewe Toe ek vir koerante begin werk het ek, ’ n arme protestante laaitie, besef boosheid is oral Ek kan nie eens onthou hoeveel stories ek oor moorde en verkragtings geskryf het nie

Maar steeds voel ek iets gaan binne-in my dood as ek hoor van ’ n kind wat leed aangedoen is Deesdae as ek ’ n man en ’ n jong kind saam sien, kyk ek na die kleinste detail Ek doen al hierdie dinge omdat my kop vir my sê dat ek binnekort oor hierdie kind moet skryf
