A political dispute has emerged in the Northern Cape over the procurement, budgeting and execution of the “Premier’s Bafana Bafana Fan Park” held in June.

Congress of the People (Cope) has levelled allegations of unbudgeted spending and bypassed safeguards, while the Office of the Premier has strongly defended the legality of the initiative. The controversy began when Cope leader Pakes Dikgetsi challenged the provincial government over an expenditure of R3,1million of public money at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley. Dikgetsi claims the fan park events on 28 June were neither properly planned nor budgeted for, despite the dates of the 2026 Fifa World
Cup being known four years in advance. He questions why an emergency was seemingly created to bypass an open competitive tender process. A central point of contention is the decision to route organisation and funding through the Northern Cape Economic Development Agency (NCEDA). Dikgetsi questioned why a provincial agency with an economic-development mandate was burdened with tasks that belong under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). He alleged this formed part of a “disturbing pattern”. He claimed while ordinary businesses face months-long delays for government payments, politically connected beneficiaries were paid with “remarkable speed”, citing invoices INV48/NCEDA and INV198/NCEDA. He said documentary evidence would be handed over to law enforcement. In its response the Northern Cape Office of the Premier rejected allegations, characterising them as hearsay presented as facts. media liaison officer for the Office of the Premier, clarified the decision to host the fan park was not made unilaterally by the premier’s office, but was a taken by the Northern Cape Executive Council (exco). The public viewing was in response to Bafana Bafana’s historic qualification for the round of 32 of the Fifa World Cup against Canada. The office stated procurement was conducted through a standard three-quotation process. Because the total value fell below the prescribed quotation threshold, an open competitive bidding or tender process was not legally required. “No emergency procurement or deviation from the applicable SCM (supply chain management) prescripts was invoked or approved,” it stated. According to the statement, Exco had resolved that NCEDA was the most appropriate entity to implement catalytic projects aimed at economic development and tourism, with specific sports codes recognised as primary economic drivers.

Kgalagadi se leeus bestudeer ’n Nuwe, omvattende leeu-opname is in die Kgalagadi-oorgrenspark bekend gestel en word deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Parke (SANParke) in vennootskap met Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) gedoen. Die navorsingsprojek sal tot Oktober duur en het ten doel om ’n beter begrip van die park se leeubevolking te verkry, insluitend getalle, verspreiding en hoe hulle oor die landskap beweeg. Luidens ’n verklaring is leeus ’n noodsaaklike skakel in die Kgalagadi-ekosisteem. Betroubare inligting oor die bevolking is noodsaaklik om ingeligte bewaring- en bestuurbesluite te ondersteun. Veldspanne word oor verskillende sektore van die park ontplooi; hulle doen voertuiggebaseerde opnames en gebruik strategies geplaasde kameras om data oor die leeus in te samel. As deel van die navorsing sal die spanne af en toe naby leeus stilhou om foto’s van hul snorbaardkolle te neem. Elke leeu het ’n unieke snorbaardkol-patroon, wat navorsers help om individuele diere te identifiseer en ’n akkurate beeld van die algehele bevolking op te bou. Besoekers aan die park kan tydens die opname navorsingsvoertuie van SANParke en die EWT teëkom, wat duidelik met amptelike handelsmerke gemerk is. Parkbesoekers word versoek om voldoende ruimte aan die navorsingspanne en hul voertuie te gee en ’n respekvolle afstand van die leeus en ander wild te handhaaf.Dit is noodsaaklik dat diere, asook die navorsingsvoertuie, nie gesteur word nie en dat instruksies van SANParke-personeel en navorsers altyd nagekom word. Die inligting wat met die opname ingesamel word, sal regstreeks bydra tot die bestuur en bewaring, op die duur, van die leeus in die oorgrenspark.
Sol Plaatje Municipal Manager Thapelo Matlala, alongside Mayor Martha Bartlett and Speaker Dipuo Peters, commended the decisive municipal action taken to drive major infrastructure upgrades across the region, acknowledging the vital support of the mayor, council and local community in bringing these key developments to fruition. He said this at the unveiling of the new 20 MVA transformer at the Galeshewe Substation in Kimberley on Wednesday 19 August. Concurrently, the local power grid received a substantial boost following the delivery of the new R21.7 million transformer. Operating on a single transformer since the winter of 2018, the substation’s capacity expansion was made possible through an Integrated National Electrification Programme (Inep) grant from the Department of Energy alongside dedicated capital allocations approved by the Sol Plaatje Council. Matlala addressed the crucial infrastructure improvements implemented at the substation, emphasising how these developments have transformed local grid stability. Reflecting on the municipality’s history of service interruptions, Matlala noted that the municipality had effectively been “living on the edge” and experiencing “sleepless nights” due to the prolonged absence of an essential backup transformer following a major explosion roughly two years ago. This lack of redundancy left the community highly vulnerable to severe outages, such as a recent instance where an exploded protector caused prolonged delays because a spare unit was out of stock and had to be sourced from Eskom. To resolve these recurring vulnerabilities, Matlala highlighted the procurement and installation of the new 20 MVA transformer, funded through the Inep grant alongside additional budget allocations approved by the Sol Plaatje Council. Matlala emphasised that this infrastructure upgrade shifts the system to an N-1 operational configuration, establishing a reliable backup that allows maintenance to occur on one unit without interrupting power flow to the public. The upgrade drastically shortens fault response times, prevents widespread blackouts and secures almost 90% of the area served through HA Morris Substation. “The municipality is now robustly equipped

to handle future growth and upcoming community electrification projects, reassuring residents that the local power network is finally secure and protected from major transformer-related failures,” Matlala said. “The additional transformer unit provides vital operational flexibility and redundancy, significantly alleviating pressure on existing grid infrastructure during peak demand periods. It enables the municipality to perform necessary maintenance and resolve unexpected faults far more efficiently without subjecting surrounding businesses and households to major power disruptions,” Bartlett said. She stressed that the substation expansion extends far beyond stabilising existing connections; it actively enables regional growth by facilitating planned connections for approximately 300 new households across Marikana, Platfontein, and Tshwaragano in the current financial year. In an earlier statement, Bartlett expressed
deep gratitude to residents for their cooperation during planned water interruptions, emphasising that community preparedness greatly assisted teams in executing bulk valve replacements and pipework upgrades at the Newton Reservoirs Complex. During these maintenance periods, the municipality made it a compassionate priority to maintain emergency water supply to critical entities, including local hospitals, retirement homes and households hosting funerals. Bartlett framed the ongoing work under the National Treasury’s R2.5 billion Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) as a vital, shared investment embraced by the community to guarantee long-term access to stable, high-quality water. Backed by the BFI investment, the Newton Reservoirs have undergone extensive structural upgrades, with expenditure reaching R34.5 million (excluding VAT) on completed projects. These achievements include the removal of ageing fittings and the installation of new valves across all four primary reservoirs – the 102 megalitres (ML), 91 ML, 45 ML and 23 ML facilities – headlined by upgraded 1 200 mm bulk valves on the site’s largest 102 ML tank. To drastically improve the city’s drinking water quality, a year-long sanitisation, cleaning and desludging campaign was successfully executed across the complex. Network reliability was further strengthened through the replacement of critical ageing pipes leading from the tower to high-lying distribution zones. The municipality completed a R4 million perimeter security fence installation, with additional plans underway to construct a new guardhouse and install CCTV surveillance.

“No dictionary is ever completed or perfect, there is so much more that must be added. But Kaaps is a language, and this dictionary is a source that did not exist before,” said Dr Theodore Rodrigues at the launch in July at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, hosted by its Faculty of Humanities. Rodrigues is a senior lecturer in the Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He was joined by Prof. Quentin Williams, professor of Linguistics in the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), and Prof. Victor Teise, director of the Centre for Creative Writing and African Language at the SPU. During their conversation with Dr Natalie Smith and Sisca Julius, Williams said in compiling the dictionary, they had to make many decisions, for example whether they were using the words of Adam Small or Nathan Trantraal. Rodrigues added that as editors of the dictionary, they are not the “spelpolisie” and do not aim to standardise Kaaps in the book. Kaaps started centuries ago on ships when people of many identities and languages were on their way to the Cape. With time, “Kaaps

Die seuns was nie oor lenteklere gepla nie; vir hulle het dit net ’n kortbroek en kortmouhemp beteken, en beslis kaalvoet. Vir hulle was dit meer as genoeg dat hulle op daardie dag met hul perd skool toe kon ry. Getrou aan tradisie was die meeste Lentedae ysig, met ’n snerpende wind vanuit die suide. Die laatnaggeskepte rokkies was onder truie verberg en hoendervel van pure koue het heeldag oor die meisies se bene uitgeslaan. Gelukkig, by dié plaasskool met sy drie klaskamers waarin tot drie verskillende grade of standerds in een klas onderrig ontvang het, was daar in elke klaskamer koolstofies. Byna elke wintersdag is op een van die stofies ’n groot pot sop gekook – genoeg vir die ongeveer 60 leerders van die skool. Dit was nie vreemd om Lentedag te vier terwyl jou ysige hande om die warm koppie sop gevou was nie.
Deel van winters by dié plaasskool was rugby- en netbalwedstryde teen dorpskole. By dié plaasskool, soos by die drie ander in die omliggende gebied, het elke leerder deelgeneem – anders was daar tussen dié vier skole nie genoeg om ’n span in ’n spesifieke ouderdomsgroep vol te maak nie. Benewens die onthou dat netbal gespeel is in dieselfde drag as waarin atletiek gedoen is – ’n leotard met ’n rompie – word die koue kaalvoete op die hardgerypte grasnetbalbaan onthou. En die nerf-af knieë en stukkende tone van die seuns. Tekkies was ’n vreemdheid vir dié kinders. Met rustyd is lemoenskyfies op skinkborde aangedra. Dié kinders het nie geweet dit is ’n algemene gebruik, en nie net in hul wêreld nie. Hulle het niks geweet van die informele uitdrukking “cutting the half-time orange” wat beteken om halfpad deur ’n aktiwiteit op te hou, of ’n blaaskans te vra en die ondersteuning van ’n moederfiguur te soek wanneer jy uitgeput is. Vir hulle het die lemoenskyfies die dors geles en energie gegee. Dit het moed gegee vir dié wat nie die spelreëls verstaan nie en maar net binne perke tydens die wedstryd rondspring om besig te lyk – vir hulle was lemoenskyfie-tyd die teken dat die wedstrydmarteling darem halfpad verby is.

Dit was ’n goeie reëling. ’n Mens raak besonder geheg aan hulle. Hulle ken jou deur en deur, en die vak se aanbieding word een saak en die vorming van jou menswees ’n ander. Hoe baie my lewe so gevorm is, kan ek nooit genoeg beskryf nie. Daar was altyd daardie onderwysers soos wie ek gedroom het om eendag te wees, en dan was
daar daardie waaroor ek vandag nog dink: Mag ek tog nooit so wees nie. Hierdie week het ek weer gedink aan een van daardie lesse binne ’n klas van ’n onderwyser soos wie ek altyd sou wou wees. Sy het met ons gesels oor mense in ’n mens se lewe. Sy het dit konserwatief opgesom. Daardie dag het ek nie alles verstaan nie, maar dit het genoegsaam vasgesteek dat ek nou nog daaraan dink. Maar, het sy ons gewaarsku, jy gaan gou leer daar is mense in jou leefwêreld op wie jy nie kan staatmaak nie. Omring jou met mense op wie jy kan staatmaak. Nou, dekades later, wens ek dat ek vir haar kon dankie sê vir daardie stukkie wysheid. Ek wens so ek kon vir haar vertel hoe reg sy was. En dat ek dit ter harte geneem het. Soms het ek vergeet; dan was daar mense om my op wie ek nie kon staatmaak nie, maar wanneer ek kon staatmaak op ander mense was ek sterker. KARIN MULLER Die winkel is vol en die ry is lank. Almal wag geduldig. Die persoon voor my haal sy selfoon uit sy broeksak en bel iemand. Hy praat hard en duidelik. Hy maak verskoning dat hy nie die middag se vergadering kan bywoon nie. “Daar is dood in die familie,” sê hy. “Ek koop nou juis ’n paar goedjies vir die pad. Ek is jammer hieroor, maar jy weet ek is nie ‘two-minute noodle’ nie.” Ek probeer hard om nie te glimlag nie. ’n Mens verstaan presies wat hy sê. Daar is mense wat heeltyd van plan verander. Voortdurend. Sonder ophou. Hulle sê nou een ding en wanneer jy weer met hulle praat, sê hulle heeltemal iets anders. Hulle het ’n magdom planne, waarvan die meeste net praatjies is. Hierdie planne kom selde tot iets.
Hulle verbind hulle nie tot iets nie. Hulle wil. Hulle sou graag wou. Hulle sê hulle gaan. Hulle belowe hulle sal. Maar as daar om die tafel gesit word of die projek van die grond af moet kom, skitter hulle in hul afwesigheid. Daar het iets voorgeval. En weer voorgeval. En weer voorgeval. Hulle kan nie hulle tot iets verbind nie. Die meeste entrepreneurs het baie planne. Baie van hierdie planne kom nie van die grond af nie. Die wat wel van die grond af kom is in baie gevalle ’n sukses. Buitestanders sien gewoonlik net die planne wat gewerk het, nie die magdom planne wat nie gewerk het nie. Deursettingsvermoë word onderskat. As iemand my sou vra om ons met kos te vergelyk, weet ek nie of pasta my eerste gedagte sou wees nie. As ons wel met pasta vergelyk word, hoop ek die meeste mense is die duursame pasta wat ’n ruk moet kook voordat dit sag is. Nie “two-minute noodles” nie.

Finish en klaar. Want daar is iets besonders aan ’n verjaardag, nie net oor dit geskenke mag inhou nie, maar omdat dit die een dag van die jaar is waarop die wêreld, vir ’n oomblik, om jou draai. Boodskappe stroom in van mense van wie jy nie altyd gereeld hoor nie: ’n ou skoolvriend, ’n tannie van ver, ’n kollega wat onthou het. Elke boodskap is soos ’n klein kaartjie wat sê: “Ek dink aan jou vandag.” Dit is die klein oomblikke wat verjaardae spesiaal maak. Nie die koek nie, nie die geskenke nie, hoewel dit lekker is, maar die wete
dat jy, vir minstens een dag, in soveel harte en gedagtes teenwoordig is. In ’n wêreld waar ons almal so besig is met ons eie lewe is dit vertroostend om te weet dat mense steeds tyd maak om te onthou, te bel, of net ’n kort boodskappie te stuur. Ons mensdom raak te negatief, ek wens elke dag kan stilstaan soos ’n verjaardag. Verjaardae herinner aan hoeveel liefde rondom ons is, al sien jy dit nie altyd raak nie. Jy kyk terug na die jaar wat verby is, en vorentoe met hoop en dankbaarheid. Dit is ’n dag om te vier dat jy hier is, dat jy bestaan, en dat jou bestaan vir ander iets beteken. Dis een van die min geleenthede waar jy toegelaat word om jouself in die middelpunt te plaas, sonder skuldgevoelens. Maar dan ook, meer belangrik, vier elke ander dag soos iemand anders se verjaardag. Gee ander mense die liefde, aandag en die waardering wat hulle nodig het.

Kunsteweek weer gehou Te danke aan ’n skare kunskamerade is beplanning van die tweede Van Zylsrus-kunsteweek goed op dreef. Dit vind van 29 September tot 1 Oktober plaas. Vanjaar geniet drie kernaspekte aandag: gratis kunsklasse vir kinders in die gemeenskapsaal; betaalde kunsklasse vir volwassenes in die NG kerk-saal; en die letterkunde- en storievertelaktiwiteite by die El Shaddaigemeente. Met hierdie kunsteweek wil Bridge Co-Creators kunstebewustheid in die NoordKaap stimuleer deur deelnemers praktiese en doenbare geleenthede te bied om aan hul drome uiting te gee, soos om byvoorbeeld ’n eerste maal ’n houtskoolskets te skep. Dit is boonop ’n ideale geleentheid vir instellings

of individue wat die waarde van die skeppende ekonomie besef om deur borgskappe betrokke te raak. Dié is ’n kunsteweek en nie ’n kunstefees nie. Die Van Zylrus-kunsteweek bied tyd vir kunspleging en ’n verposing vir inspirasie. Die klem val op
die wonder van skep, hoewel uitstallers die geleentheid kry om gratis met eie toerusting buite die onderskeie kerksale uit te stal. Nog ’n oogmerk is om vir kunstenaars in alle genres ’n gratis platform te skep. Hier kan hulle vriende maak met ander kunssinniges en kun-
sliefhebbers uit ander oorde. Slegs twee van die gebeurtenisse wat gaan plaasvind, is ’n fotografie- en teken-inspirasiesessie deur ’n dosent van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) se visuelekunstedepartement; ook gaan ’n multimedia-aanbieder vanuit Botswana bo-op die duin wat oor die aasvoëlgeoglief uitkyk, ’n buitelug “groet-die-son”-gebeurtenis lei. Deel van die suksesvolle eerste kunsteweek wat verlede jaar aangebied is, was die pak en aanpak van die aasvoëlgeoglief, wat deur Site_Specific Collective in samewerking met Bridge Co-Creators in Mei vanjaar voltooi is. Inquisitive minds share their findings Curiosity was transformed into meaningful research at the Eskom Expo Kimberley Regional Science Fair, where young scientists confidently shared their investigations, ideas, and solutions.
Take centre (national) stage by earning top title Choirs of St Patrick’s CBC in Kimberley respresented the school with distinction at the national Cantamus Choral Festival and Competition, which took place in George from 7 to 10 August. The St Patrick’s CBC High School Girls’ Choir (photo) was crowned the best high school girls’ choir in their category, while the St Patrick’s CBC Senior Primary Choir achieved third place in the category for senior primary choirs. “While the results are certainly worth celebrating, opportunities such as these are about so much more. Our learners had the chance to perform, grow in confidence, experience a national competition and share the stage with talented choirs from across the country,” the school stated, also thanking the St Patrick’s CBC School of Music and senior primary staff for the many hours of preparation, guidance and support that made this experience possible. in Douglas presented the best development project. Hosted in the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Multipurpose Hall on 15 August, the regional science fair featured 120 research projects presented by 162 learners in Gr. 4 to Gr. 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students NC(V) level 2 to level 4. A total of 32 gold medals, 23 silver medals and 60 bronze medals were awarded. The St Patrick’s CBC received the award for the highest number of entries at
the district expo, while De Aar was the best performing school at the regional science fair. Additional awards include: ■ best young scientist: Tshegofatso Mackenzie of the Vooruitsig Primary School; ■ best problem-solving project: Dane Swanevelder of the Douglas Combined School; ■ most creative project: Ethan Oberholzer of the Upington High School and Charles Coetzee of the Prieska Combined School; and ■ best community impact project: Reatlegile Oliphant of the Thabane High School.

Gewigte sy speelgoed HELENA BARNARD Met sy heel eerste deelname aan ’n kragoptelkompetisie het die 16-jarige Ruben Krüger van Kimberley ’n goue medalje verwerf én vir deelname aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe gekwalifiseer. Ruben het hierdie prestasie behaal nadat hy in Desember 2025 vir die eerste keer in ’n gimnasium ingestap het om kragoptel aan te pak. Behalwe dié goue medalje wat hy op 14 Februarie tydens die Noordwes Classic and Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Fochville verwerf het, het hy op 20 Maart in Johannesburg ’n silwermedalje tydens die SA Classic Powerlifting Championships ontvang. Op 8 Julie, by die Asia Pacific African Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships in Potchefstroom, het hy ’n bronsmedalje verdien. Hy neem in die sub-junior 66 kg-kategorie deel. Met sy prestasie op internasionale vlak het Ruben boonop sy junior Protea-kleure verwerf, en is hy as reserwe vir die World Junior and Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championships aangewys wat later vanjaar by Sun City plaasvind.
Ruben vertel hy en sy pa, AJ Krüger, het in Desember besluit om saam by die Pirates-gimnasium te begin oefen. Krüger het in sy jonger dae aan kragoptel- en Strongman-kompetisies deelgeneem. Toe Ruben, ’n gr.10-leerder aan die Hoërskool Diamantveld, en sy pa saam in die gimnasium begin oefen het, het sy pa hom baie met tegnieke gehelp en om sy potensiaal met die swaar ysters raak te sien. Kragoptel is ’n kragsport waarin atlete hul maksimum krag deur middel van drie kernbewegings toets: hurksit (squat), bankdruk (bench press) en doodoptel (deadlift). Deelnemers probeer om die swaarste moontlike gewig vir ’n enkele herhaling in elke beweging op te tel. Kragoptel is nie dieselfde as gewigoptel nie. Ruben pas sy kragoptel-gimnasiumsessies en -kompetisies tussen sy skoolwerk en rugby-oefeninge in. Hy het egter onlangs tydens ’n rugbywedstryd ligamente in sy skouer geskeur en weens dit mag hy nou vir vier tot ses weke nie oefen nie. Vir die korttermyn wil hy ’n goue medalje op die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe verwerf, en op die langtermyn op die wêreldverhoog verskyn. Intussen, soos hy vertel, leer hy dat elke uitdaging jou sterker maak, en oefen hy saam met sy pa en “maak memories.”

Jong skuts mik na SA’s Jong skuts wat in die Noord-Kaapse Skole Skietspan ingesluit is gaan die provinsie op die Suid-Afrikaanse Kampioenskappe in Bloemfontein, vanaf 26 September tot 1 Oktober, verteenwoordig. Dié span is ná afloop van die NoordKaap Skole Skietvereniging (NKSSV) se jaarlikse liga-eindronde, wat begin Augustus in Kimberley aangebied is, bepaal. Hierdie liga-eindronde is die hoogtepunt van die NKSSV-skietseisoen en dien as die provinsiale byeenkoms waar die beste jong skuts in die NoordKaap meeding. Hierdie geleentheid bring skole van oor die Noord-Kaap byeen, onder meer van Upington, Hotazel, Springbok, Kuruman, Orania en Kimberley. Pistoolskuts ding mee in 10m-staan en 10m-pistool-sporterklas, terwyl die veer- en sporterklas in verskillende posisies van kniel, staan en lê moet meeding. Die eindronde is ook NKSSV se spoggeleentheid waar ’n formele dinee aangebied word. Hiermee saam vind die jaarlikse prysuitdeling plaas en die aankondiging van die Noord-Kaap Skole Skietspan. Boemo Mothibi was captivated during a recent visit to the Kimberley Library. The Gr.1, Gr.2, and Gr.3 learners of St Future Academy enjoyed an educational tour to the library on 12 August. In addition to being entertained with a puppet show, they listened to stories read to them. It was explained how to properly care for books, and time was allowed for them to select books to read.

Sechogela went beyond the required coursework, completing the computer literacy module alongside her trade training. “I like to learn,” she says simply. It was that initiative that caught her manager’s attention and opened the door to employment. A wife and mother of two, Sechogela had been a stay-athome mother building her skills for years. The call inviting her to interview for the programme was the moment that opened a new chapter. Her message to youths in the Northern Cape is straightforward. “The short courses that people often undermine are the ones that gave me confidence. Engage with the opportunities in front of you. Volunteer if you can. And be patient.”

The 32-year-old from Kuruman is a graduate of the Portable Skills Programme by Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore. It offers young people in its host communities accredited trade training in disciplines such as carpentry, plumbing, welding and bricklaying. Sechogela enrolled in November 2024. When her six-month carpentry course concluded in June 2025, she left the B-Safe Africa Academy, the accredited institution that partnered with Kumba to provide the training, with a new trade qualification, a toolkit, and plans to start her own small business. A day later she received a call: B-Safe Africa wanted her back as an administrator. “They told me: ‘We saw your potential, your drive, and the effort you put in. That’s what made you stand out.’ They recognised my background as a receptionist and administrator, along with my computer qualifications, and that’s where they placed me,” she says. Within three months, Sechogela had moved into a facilitation role. By October 2025, she was running the computer lab. She has since qualified as both an assessor and a moderator, funding the certifications herself. Today, she facilitates computer skills training, supports human resources (HR) administration, and volunteers in the kitchen whenever extra hands are needed. “I didn’t even know I had this potential,” she

For Kathu resident Lesedi Tshedimosetso Thankane (34), hard work has paid off in more ways than one. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering qualification from the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, and has secured a graduate engineering position at Vedanta Zinc International’s Gamsberg Mine in Aggeneys. As one of Kathu Solar Park’s bursary beneficiaries, Thankane’s journey reflects the long-term impact of investing in local young people. “The appointment of Lesedi, one of our bursary beneficiaries, as a professional-in-training at a mine is a significant milestone and testament to the impact of the programme,” said Sandisiwe Mntonintshi, socio-economic development manager at Kathu Solar Park. “As funder, this achievement is meaningful to us because it reflects the successful application of the skills and knowledge gained through our investment in his education. This is precisely the type of outcome the programme is designed to achieve – developing skilled professionals who are equipped to make a meaningful contribution to the mining sector while remaining in the Northern Cape.” His passion for electrical engineering began while attending a technical school. “I enjoyed Electrical Technology more than any other subject. goal is to become a registered engineering technologist and obtain a Government Certificate of Competency, a professional qualification issued by the Department of Employment and Labour that is required for engineers working in factories and mines. “I believe that while hard work is a major factor in career success, we rarely talk about how much the company you join matters,” said Thankane. “A company’s structure, the quality of its graduate programme, and the amount of time and resources it invests in your development make a massive difference.” He is one of 18 students to have graduated through Kathu Solar Park’s bursary programme since its launch
in 2022. Education and skills development remain central to the Solar Park’s socio-economic development strategy. The bursary programme supports students from local communities across a wide range of fields of study and institutions, helping remove financial barriers to higher education while preparing students for successful careers. The programme covers tuition fees, accommodation, books, travel expenses, laptops, data and a monthly allowance. Students also receive mentorship, career guidance and psycho-social support to help them navigate university life, build resilience and successfully transition into the workplace.

Puik halfeind-aksie beloof NICK PRETORIUS Die rugbyspanne van die Defence Force Collegians (DFC) en die Sunwolves het op Saterdag 22 Augustus ná hul ZF Mgcawu-ligakragmeting op die Eilandveld na eerskomende Saterdag se halfeindstryde deurgedring. Die DFC het die Sunwolves met 34 – 14 pak slae gegee in ’n wedstryd wat in ’n mate aan die verwagtinge voldoen het. Volgende gaan die DFC met Upington Dorp op die Eilandveld in Upington kragte meet. Sunwolves het ’n afspraak met die nommereen-span in die ZF Mgcawu-liga: Kakamas-rugbyklub, in Kakamas. Twee opwindende en taai halfeinstryde word verwag. Volgens ’n woordvoerder van die liga gaan albei wedstryde om 15:00 afskop sodat die spelers geleentheid kan kry om die tweede Greatest Rivalry-toets tussen die Springbokke en die All Blacks in die DHL-stadion in Kaapstad op TV te volg.
