‘Polismafia’ in die spervuur HELENA BARNARD

Beweerde en sogenaamde “polissmokkelaars” wat glo by die Roodepan-kliniek in Kimberley bedrywig is, was in geen onduidelike terme nie in die visier van inwoners tydens ’n vreedsame opmars na dié kliniek. Die “March against Policy Mafia” na die Dr. Winston Torres-kliniek, ook die Roodepan-kliniek genoem, het op Wêreld Pasiëntveiligheidsdag,

17 September, plaasgevind en is deur die gemeenskapsorganisasie Community Alliance South Africa (Casa) uitgeroep. Tydens die opmars is ’n memorandum aan ’n verteenwoordiger van die Noord-Kaapse departement van gesondheid oorhandig. In die memorandum word talle besware en beweerde ongerymdhede uiteengesit betreffende pasiëntveiligheid in mediese geriewe, insluitend die Roodepan-kliniek  waar agt van 16 werknemers glo onlangs geskors is.

groeiende skare gesê. Bewerings is dat honderde duisende rande by die beweerde ongerymdhede betrokke is en dat dit waarskynlik na ander klinieke en departemente strek. Die memorandum is deur Sipho Ndelaphi van die Noord-Kaapse departement van gesondheid ontvang, wat gesê het die departement sal op die memorandum reageer, en dat die departement reeds besig is om op te tree.  Vervolg op bl. 2.

Parties ready for showdown CHARNÉ KEMP At the local government election (LGE) on 4 November, 25 political parties will contest the 65 available council seats in the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley. This comprises 33 ward councillors elected directly and 32 proportional representation (PR) councillors allocated via party lists. Local organisations, including the Kimberley Action Group (KAG), Sol Plaatje Service Delivery Forum (SPSDF), and Community Alliance SA have fielded candidates in numerous wards alongside their PR lists. Additionally, the South African Communist Party (SACP) is competing independently for the first time. The governing ANC is fielding a mix of returning ward representatives alongside a strategic turnover that excludes several former executive figures. revamped candidate line-up aimed at capitalising on vulnerabilities within traditional ANC strongholds. The ANC has submitted a 26-member PR list led by mayoral nominee Tebogo Emmanuel “Pantsi” Obusitse. Obusitse, an employee at the Department of Education, is best known as the chairperson and co-founder of the community crime-fighting group Operation Wanya Tsotsi. He is followed on the PR list by Marope Sonja Bosman-Mogorosi (position 2) and Charmoné Hilary Swartz (position 3). Current Council Speaker Elizabeth Dipuo Peters occupies position 8, whilst outgoing executive mayor Martha “Barbara” Bartlett is notably absent from the election. The party is contesting 31 individual wards. Longstanding councillor and pastor Heinrich Pieterse leads the DA as its mayoral candidate, focusing on infrastructure repair, financial recovery, and service restoration. Incumbent ward 24 councillor Chris Whittaker holds position 2 on the PR list whilst

re-contesting his ward. Brandon van Wyk occupies position 3, with sitting PR councillors Chris Phiri and Carol-Ann Pearce placed at positions 16 and 17. The DA is contesting 31 wards. Lorato Florence Tito, a former Sol Plaatje councillor and current member of parliament (MP), tops the EFF PR list as its mayoral candidate, championing working-class empowerment and municipal oversight. Current PR councillor Kenneth Corneels Kock is contesting ward 16, whilst PR councillor Pontsho Moses Mocwana stands in ward 12. The EFF is fielding candidates across 31 wards. Achieving full-scale ward coverage, the FF Plus is fielding candidates in all 33 individual wards. Its PR list is led by Wilhelm Lourens Reichert at position 1, followed by El-Marie Wilken (position 2) and James Kilgour van Wyk (position 3). Sitting PR councillors Francois Reichert and Johan Smit hold positions 5 and 6. Lezelle Jackson holds position 1 on the PA PR list, a party current-

ly holding three PR seats in the municipality. The PA’s 26-candidate list includes Clive Gerald Jaftha at position 8. The party is contesting 31 wards, deploying prominent local organisers across high-density areas, including Klaas Katz in ward 1 and Zenobia Charday Barker in ward 2. Sitting PR councillor Dennis Pienaar leads the SPSDF list at position 1 as its mayoral candidate. The party’s PR list also features Adriana Justine Esau, Poelo Elizabeth Nathane, and Margaret Kereditse Molatudi, supported by candidates in several individual wards. The KAG PR candidate Kagiso Makodi holds position 1 whilst simultaneously contesting six individual wards. The party is contesting all 33 wards. This newly registered party has also fielded one PR candidate for the broader Frances Baard District Municipality. As Election Day approaches, the ANC relies on established leaders to maintain its municipal majority, whilst opposition attempt to convert turmoil into electoral gains.

Weens bewerings dat medikasie wat vir pasiënte bestem is, vir eie gewin verkoop word, versoek Casa dat die uitgee van medikasie daagliks gemoniteer word. “Jy is nie veilig by die kliniek as daar ’n polis op jou lewe is nie,” sê ’n inwoner. AO Molefi Shemane, polisiewoordvoerder, bevestig die polisie ondersoek ’n bedrogsaak wat by die Roodepan-

polisiekantoor aangemeld is. Die dossier is op 17 September na die provinsiale eenheid vir kommersiële misdaad vir hantering en ondersoek oorgeplaas. “Die ondersoek duur voort. Geen inhegtenisnemings is nog uitgevoer nie.” Navraag is aan die provinsiale departement van gesondheid gerig, wat ontvangs erken het. Die terugvoering sal gedeel word sodra dit ontvang is.

A former manager of Clover South Africa appeared briefly before the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crimes Court on Friday 18 September on charges of defrauding his former employer. Werner Veldman (45) faces charges of fraud, theft, contravention of the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act, and contravention of the Companies Act. Veldman was arrested on 17 September in Johannesburg by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team and transported to Kimberley for his court appearance. The charges relate to the period 1 January 2024 to 30 April 2024, when Veldman was employed as a manager at Clover South Africa’s Kimberley branch. He allegedly manipulated the company’s accounting system by capturing invoices paid in cash as bank transfers. During the bank reconciliation process, discrepancies were discovered between cash received and bank transfers. The company suffered a loss exceeding R3 million. Veldman was granted R10 000 bail and the case was postponed to 14 October.

Inspirasie ingeasem Die inasem van inspirasie om self skeppend te wees. Dit is die klem van die tweede Van Zylsrus-kunsteweek wat vanaf Woensdag 29 September tot Donderdag 1 Oktober in dié Kalahari-dorpie plaasvind. Pieter Pienaar, organiseerder, vertel dat die kunsteweek drie fokusareas het: kuns, letterkunde en gratis kunsklasse wat op die duin vir plaaslike kinders aangebied word. Behalwe dit vind unieke geleenthede plaas, soos groet-die-son-ervaring, ’n kaas-en-wyn geselligheid by die eiesoortige en bekoorlike Van Zylsrus Hotel waar ’n uitstalling van die unieke aasvoëlgeoglief plaasvind. ’n Kunsuitstalling word opgerig en die kunsteweek word met ’n middagkonsert afgesluit. Kunsklasse vind by die NG kerk se saal plaas. Hier demonstreer Abel van Heerden mesmaaktegnieke (deelnemers kry hul eie mes) en Alicia Wambach bied waterverfklas aan en inspireer koekversierders. Deelnemers stap weg met hul eie versierde koek. Christiaan Snyman bied beeldhou met pottebakkersklei aan. Hy vervoer dan elke skepping na Pretoria waar hy dit in sy oond gaan bak. Silent walk addresses barriers The Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF), working with the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, recently joined the Kimberley community and learners of the Re Tlameleng Special School for the visually impaired and hearing impaired for the inaugural #SilentWalkAndRun event to raise awareness about issues affecting the deaf community. “Excluding the deaf community inflicts deep emotional and psychological damage,” said Gen. (Ret.) Riah Phiyega, chief executive officer (CEO) of the SSAF. “We are bringing attention to systemic failures, including substandard schooling for deaf children, gender-based violence (GBV), and widespread communication barriers at police stations, clinics, courts and transit hubs. By bringing people together through interactive events, we create an open environment where participants can voice their struggles and solve problems.” Learners of the Thabang and Vuyolwethu secondary schools showed their support alongside officers and officials of

the police, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Department of Correctional Services, and traffic department. They met with learners to explain legal processes and personal safety. “Mainstream society routinely excludes the deaf community, leaving many without access to vital information about their human rights and civic responsibilities. Today’s sessions directly addressed this gap,” said Col. (Ret.) Abram Tsoone, Northern Cape provincial coordinator for the SSAF. “Our job is to make sure deaf learners get clear information and equal support when dealing with law enforcement.” The SSAF works with under-resourced communities to build safety awareness and improve working relationships with law enforcement agencies. It runs youth education, research and community security campaigns. This year’s International Week of the Deaf takes place from 21 to 27 September, themed “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights."

In ’n Facebook-plasing noem Raisins South Africa dat agter elke ton rosyne ’n wingerd is, en agter elke wingerd mense. So is daar produsente wat in hul wingerde belê het lank voordat die uitkoms van die seisoen bekend was. Daar is plaasspanne wat die oes deur wisselende weerstoestande en produksie-uitdagings heen bestuur het; en verpakkers, uitvoerders, tegniese spesialiste en bedryfsvennote wat saamwerk om te verseker dat Suid-Afrikaanse rosyne steeds aan die verwagtinge van kliënte wêreldwyd voldoen. Die United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) beskryf erfenis as “ons nalatenskap uit die verlede, dit waarmee ons vandag leef en dit wat ons aan toekomstige geslagte oordra. Ons kulturele en natuurlike erfenis is albei onvervangbare bronne van lewe en inspirasie.” Hierdie beskrywing is sekerlik pure speelklei en sal in elkeen se hand ’n ander vorm aanneem. Só kan een as deel van nalatenskap uit die

July deel wysheid vir elke maand van die jaar HANNES NOËTH In my jonkwees het July se antwoord by my verbygegaan. Eers noudat ek ouer word, begryp ek meer wat hy bedoel het. Op die plaas, naby die werkers se huisies, was ’n bos bloekombome. Groot en reusagtig, en tog met die jare het die wind van tyd tot tyd een omgewaai. Dit lê vandag nog so. Jare geil gegroei en toe neergevel deur stormwind. Dit was in daardie bloekombos waar July sommer net kon wegraak. As kinders het ons gelag vir hierdie Engelse

naam en selfs met ’n mooi kinderhart grappies gemaak: “Hoe gaan dit in Augustus met July?” Hy was ’n geduldige ou werker, lui op sy tyd, fluks op sy tyd, ’n huis vol kinders en ’n huis vol moeilikheid (sy woorde). Maar July kon so in die bloekombos wegraak. As pa dan vra wat het hy so lank daar gaan soek, dan was sy antwoord: Die stil wind. Daar waar niks raas nie. En dan het almal weer gewoon aangegaan. Nou, jare later, verstaan ek dat July soms die stilte gaan soek het. Of die stil wind, soos hy dit genoem het. Ek begryp nou meer as toe dat ’n mens soms wil wegkom van die geraas van baie dinge en net die stil wind wil hoor.

Toe ons ons motorhek wil oopmaak, merk ons op dat iemand besig is om die straat teenaan die sypaadjie te vee. Ek wonder hardop of dit ons bure se tuinhulp is wat vandag effens wyer vee. My man klim uit en gesels met die vreemdeling met die besem. Ongeag die slaggate en grasse op die sypaadjies lyk alles inderdaad soveel beter. Iemand kla onlangs by my, juis oor ons sypaadjies. Sy ontsteltenis is duidelik te bespeur. Hy kla oor sypaadjies waar klippe gepak is dat

’n mens nie daar kan stap nie. Hy kla oor sypaadjies wat so verwaarloos is dat dit veiliger is om in die pad, met al die slaggate, te probeer stap. Hy kla oor die veiligheid van kinders wat huis toe en skool toe stap. Kafee toe stap. Die onmiddellike omgewing om ons lyk gehawend. Om dit sagkens te stel. Die strate is byna onbegaanbaar. Die sypaadjies is heeltemal onbegaanbaar. Wanneer ons ’n entjie gaan stap vir oefening en stresontlading, haal ons eintlik meer spanning op die hals. Die ongesnoeide bome, teerpaaie vol slaggate en onbegaanbare sypaadjies maak dit haas onmoontlik om ongedeërd terug by die huis te kom. As ons gaan wag totdat iemand hul werk doen en opruim, gaan ons waarskynlik baie lank wag. Ons moet begin om voor ons eie deure te vee. Agterdeure. Voordeure. Sydeure. Letterlik, sowel as figuurlik. As die bure nie tyd of hulpmiddels hiervoor het nie, vee sommer voor hul deure ook.

Die res is leesstof vir middagete. Dan, ’n vinnige paar strekoefeninge voor hy gereedmaak vir die dag. Hy rek sy hande na die hemele en dan vinnig na sy tone... loer tussendeur sy bene en steek sy tong uit vir die bruinoë wat hulle aan die roetine verkyk. Daardie twee stelle bruinoë, sy hele lewe. ’n Vinnige stappie word ingepas. Saterdae, en in die somer ook deur die week, werskaf hy in ’n tuin wat nooit klaarkom nie. Sondae sing hy uit volle bors in die kerkbanke.

Die hoogtepunt van sy week is die Sondagmiddag-uitstappies - son en swem, stap in die natuur, of as dit te koud is, ’n lekkerny - verkieslik melktert - by een of ander padstal. Vakansies word by die see baljaar, altyd net mooi naby genoeg om ook by sy eie ma - diep in haar negentigs - te gaan inloer. Die dekades stap verby. Twee dinge bly konstant: die Afrikaanse koerant saam met sy oggendkoffie en die bruinoë wat steeds sy hele lewe is. Van die tuig neerlê en versit na ’n makliker heenkome, wil hy niks weet nie. Maar selfs daardie dag breek aan. Die bruinoë kyk nou met ’n ander soort deernis na hom. Waar hy hulle vroeër oor die drumpel gedra het, is dit nou hulle wat sy arm stewig moet vasvat as die huppel in sy stap soms huiwer. Sy lied is ’n geneurie met vergete lirieke. Die jare is baie, maar die lewe is kort. Koester jou geliefdes terwyl jy kan. Wonder in a package Pledging season is officially open for the Santa Shoebox Project. This year the children’s charity is celebrating its 20th birthday. To celebrate this milestone, the project has set the goal of delivering shoeboxes to 84 663 children in need across South Africa. “The Santa Shoebox Project is made up of more than a million and a half beautiful chapters of giving and receiving joy since 2006. With 70 drop-off points around the country, in every single province, and thousands of volunteers and donors making the magic happen, we are truly grateful for the collective impact of our incredible community,” says Santa Shoebox Project chief executive officer (CEO) Deb Zelezniak. For children who are not used to much, the first surprise is often that the entire gift belongs to them. The shoebox they receive is beautifully decorated, their name is on the label, the new set of clothes is their size, and the toy and stationery is chosen for their life stage right now. Everything is new and hand-picked just for them. Each year, team pledges start on 1 August and individual pledges on 1 September, when lists of names go live on the Santa Shoebox website and everyone gets to choose a

Voorligting belig pad In Springbok is 135 gr.12-leerders besig om daadwerklike stappe na hul toekoms te neem. ’n Paar het reeds terugvoer ontvang oor hul aansoeke vir universiteite, kolleges en beurse. Dit is vordering wat moontlik gemaak is deur ’n loopbaanvoorligtingsprogram. Hierdie program help leerders om die aansoekproses te navigeer en ingeligte besluite oor hul opsies vir studie en toekomstige loopbane te neem. “Die ondersteuning wat ons ontvang het, het werklik ’n verskil vir ons as gr.12-leerders gemaak. Ons is aangemoedig om verdere studie te oorweeg en daar is vir ons gewys dat geleenthede en ’n toekoms vir ons voorlê. Die span was vriendelik, toeganklik en altyd bereid om te help. Hulle het

Verbeter veiligheid met verfwerk AfriForum se Kakamas-tak het onlangs ’n veiligheidsprojek by die Laerskool Kakamas Sentraal en Hoërskool Martin Oosthuizen afgesluit, moontlik gemaak deur verskeie borge en betrokkenes. Dit het onder meer die oorverf van twee spoedhobbels in Voortrekkerstraat behels. Noudat die merke weer duidelik sigbaar is, verbeter dit veiligheid vir leerders en ander voetgangers. Die tak het ook twee toegee- en twee voetganger-tekens vervang. Twee lede van die uitgebreide openbarewerkeprogram het met die verfwerk gehelp. Riaan Bruwer, raadslid by die Kai !Garib-munisipaliteit, het sy kragopwekker beskikbaar gestel vir boor- en skuurwerk en om boomtakke wat die padtekens versper het te snoei. “Dit wys dat ’n gemotiveerde gemeenskap nie hoef te wag vir iets om te gebeur nie, want ons spring self in. Obstacles conquerable HELENA BARNARD In a gathering that blended personal testimony with practical guidance, caregivers and families affected by dementia received a clear message on World Alzheimer's Day: you are not alone, and preparation through legal planning can protect both dignity and vulnerable individuals. At the event on 21 September at the Acacia Retirement Village in Kimberley, attendees learnt that dementia is projected to become the third leading cause of death globally by 2040. Currently, more than 57 million people live with dementia worldwide, with nearly 10 million new cases diagnosed annually. World Alzheimer’s Day is observed each year on 21 September as the focal point of World Alzheimer’s Month to raise global awareness. This year’s theme, “The earlier you know, the more you can do: A dementia diagnosis matters,” highlights the critical importance of early diagnosist. Emsie Malan, regional manager of the Association for Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa (Adasa) in the Northern Cape, delivered a message to the frontline work-

She emphasised that a caregiver can be any person involved in caring for someone with dementia, whether at a retirement village, care centre or private home, where a family member often assumes this role. Malan stressed that the sooner dementia is diagnosed, the sooner the person can become involved in making their own decisions about the way forward and how care should be executed. Although there is no cure for dementia, promising research is underway. She referenced Dr Ben Moodie, a Pretoria-based surgeon

who in April carried out the continent’s first experimental lymphovenous bypass on an Alzheimer’s patient, showing early signs of improvement, though the procedure remains investigational. Judge Lawrence Lever shared his family’s unprepared encounter with the disease. “My mother had dementia. The experience was something we were not prepared for.” He described how denial complicated other issues and spoke candidly about the adaptation required when someone you love suddenly

disrupts your life in unexpected ways. “Through the whole process it helped to be in contact with support groups and caregivers,” he said, reinforcing Malan’s message about the importance of support networks. Judge Lever’s central advice was unequivocal: overcome any denial and be prepared by creating a living will. A living will is a legal document that states your choices for end-of-life medical care if you become unable to communicate or make decisions for yourself. This covers life support, resuscitation, nutrition and hydration, pain management and organ donation. A living will applies while you are still alive but incapacitated, guiding your ongoing medical treatment. Sr Maria Lekhobo, care manager at Acacia, reinforced this message from the practitioner's perspective. She said a living will protects and respects dignity, and they encourage everyone to have one. Kimberley’s Brad Balie claimed fourth place on the international stage at the grand final of the ninth KARDO International Street Culture and Sports Competition.

‘No stress, I’ve got this’ All six Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC) Grand Slam qualifiers are done and dusted. Since June, the qualifiers rolled through Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Durban, Kimberley, Johannesburg and Hout Bay in the Cape Town area. The top three skaters from each qualifier have earned their spot in the championship on 5 December at Kimberley’s Skate Plaza. The KDC is a premier showcase for amateur and professional skateboarding, with the annual grand slam pulling in top talent from countries across the globe. The professional skateboarder competed against some of the best riders from around the world from 16 to 20 September in Vladivostok, Russia. Balie’s Russian adventure came after he took top honours at the inaugural KARDO event in South Africa. That event took place in August in Kimberley through a partnership between the Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC). Korkie, ’n mededingende Suid-Afrikaanse bergfietsryer, het dié fietsren wat oor twee dae strek en op 12 en 13 September vanuit Ulco plaasgevind het, in 4:22:21 kafgetrap, terwyl hy dit in 2025 in 4:18:33 voltooi het. In die vroueafdeling het Johanet Heymann, wat deurlopend oor die land heen podiumplekke behaal, gewen deur dit in 5:34:14 te voltooi. Op haar spoor was Marisca Steyn met 5:58:13, wat dié afdeling in 2024 en 2025 in onderskeidelik 5:19:30 en 5:35:24 gewen het. In die kort afstand vir mans was Reinardt van Heerden (o.16) eerste in 3:41:16, en Muriel Richards het die vroue-afdeling in 5:23:33 gewen. Op die kampeerterrein in Ulco word ’n feestelike ruimte geskep waar deelnemers, gesinne en ondersteuners vir ’n naweek van sport en

kameraadskap byeenkom. ’n Mini-wedren vir kinders is ook op die kampterrein aangebied. Wedrenorganiseerder Pieter Niemann vertel dat daar vanjaar meer nie-ryers as gewoonlik was, maar minder ryers. Die aangename kampeeromstandighede, vermaak en etes wat verskaf word, maak daarvan ’n ideale gesins- en kuiernaweek. Op albei dae moes deelnemers deur water ry, en gladde en modderige dele aanpak. Die weersomstandighede was egter “perfekte fietsry-omstandighede” en die wind wat daar was, het fietsryers gehelp.

The 13 disciplines are open to competitors aged 14 and over. Netball’s next generation nurtured With nearly 30 years of teaching experience and currently at the Newton Primary School in Kimberley, Roleen van Niekerk’s role in the PEP Mini Netball programme brings together two of her passions: working with children and developing netball. Van Niekerk, who is the provincial manager of the Northern Cape Schools Netball Committee under South African Schools Netball (SASN), says nothing beats watching children grow each day and develop their own personality. As provincial manager, she supports the growth of school netball in the Northern Cape. She serves on the SASN Selection Sub-Committee, helping select players whilst upholding fairness and standards. Van Niekerk finds it rewarding that the programme impacts both the young players and the adults supporting them. What stands out most is seeing the young girls take to the court, experience the festivals and leave smiling. Her impact extends to the teachers and coaches in the programme. Van Niekerk hopes to see it reach more young girls whilst creating opportunities for teachers and coaches to develop alongside them. This year, PEP Mini Netball hosted 45 festivals across the country, with four in the Northern Cape: in Hartswater, De Aar, Kimberley and Kuruman; with the coaching course in Springbok. Districts and towns are alternated each year. This is a grassroots programme that hosts festivals in all nine provinces for girls aged U7, U8

and U9. It focuses on fun, inclusive non-competitive play to teach fundamental skills and build confidence. Coaching sessions empower local netball coaches to teach foundational skills to young players. There are nine coaching sessions across South Africa, one per province, hosted by expert coaches using modern and scientific techniques.
