‘Hy was dood’

“Dit was nie my of my man s’n nie, dit was die skieter s’n.”

Pioneer passes away

A pioneer and activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, Dorothy-Anne Howitson, passed away on the afternoon of Monday, 20 October, two days before her 70th birthday. Howitson, who contracted polio when she was a child, was also a ghter working towards eradicating polio through polio vaccines.

“As a polio survivor, I cannot bear to think that anyone should get this preventable virus, which changes your life forever,” Howitson used to say.

For most of her life, she was dependent on a wheelchair, and a few years ago she was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome. Howitson was an active member of society, serving with organisations including Rotary International and the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).

Until recently she was the secretary of the Association of and for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Frances Baard District.

On Facebook, Sharon Steyn, on behalf of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nocci), wrote: “Dorothy stood for what she believed in; she fought for the rights of people with disabilities and was always thinking of ways to make a di erence.”

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, 1 November, at the Dutch Reformed Church Newton. e time will be con rmed.

Empowering oneself through art

At the opening of the 41st annual Matric Art Exhibition of the Kimberley Art Centre (KAC), students were praised for empowering themselves. Not only did they overcome obstacles in this art journey, but they were also honest in showing their inner feelings and thoughts through art.

"Art is not a thing, but a specific way of thinking," commented Anelle Liebenberg of KAC in her opening remarks.

The opening event of the exhibition at the William Humphreys Art Gallery (Whag) in Kimberley took place on 15 October.

Liebenberg advised the audience to become inspired when “you see the beauty of the art through your heart”. With topics such as “reflection”, “then and now”, “rituals”, “place”, “time”, “identity”, “protest art” and scars in society”, each artwork has a story to tell. Liebenberg said it is always inspiring to see how these different topics are interpreted.

Chepape Makgato, chief curator of Whag, said this Matric Art Exhibition is one of the important events on the gallery’s programme.

He praised KAC for its contribution to the development of art. For the students, it is an immense privilege to be able to exhibit their artworks in this gallery. Whag is one of only three national art museums in the country, and the only one in the province.

To their surprise, Chepape announced the inaugural Chief Curator’s

Award, for which the curatorial team made a selection. The recipient of this award is Daniele Petersen.

His advice to the students, who will be completing their school careers, is to always carry art with them in their hearts, regardless of the careers they follow. “Never forget the joy of creating art,” he said.

The exhibition will be on display at Whag until the end of October, and members of the public are invited to come and experience the artwork of these young “shining, dazzling stars”as they were described by Liebenberg.

When visiting Whag, visitors might bear in mind Chepape’s words: “Look at artwork; approach it silently until it lets you speak”.

Besoek ‘boomrestaurant’

Die Engelse uitdrukking is wel “donkey’s years”, maar dit was oorspronklik “as long as donkey’s ears”. Bron: Facebook / VivA Afrikaans

Twyfelhoekie

Watter soort is jy?

Mense word soms met diere vergelyk. So kry jy buffels of trapsuutjies. Mense kan ook met vrugte vergelyk word. Jy kry jou harde koejawels of suur pruime.

Onwrikbaar.

buitelaag breek, is daar ’n snoesigheid binne.

Watter soort lekkergoed-mens is jy?

Daar

Trauma system the difference between life and death

Trauma is a deeply disturbing experience and severe shock that causes great distress. It can be brought about by severe injuries or shock to the body, often caused by accidents, violence, or natural disasters.

It remains one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. To raise awareness about preventative measures and support offered to trauma victims, World Trauma Day is commemorated annually on 17 October.

Access to a rapid and well-coordinated trauma system - involving emergency medical services (EMS), qualified medical personnel, and well-equipped hospitals - can mean the difference between life and death. On the

day, ER24 in Kimberley, in collaboration with Mediclinic Gariep, Rocket Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), the fire and traffic departments, and PathCare, presented an exhibition featuring a simulated vehicle accident and rescue attempt in MacDougal Street, outside Mediclinic Gariep. Albert Hensberg, branch manager of ER24 in Kimberley, advises that if you encounter a vehicle accident where help is already present, do not stop to observe, as vehicles accumulating can cause secondary accidents.

“If EMS are not yet present and you know first aid, you can assist the injured. However, if you do not know first aid, it’s better to stay away and call for emergency assistance,’’ he suggests.

When calling EMS, provide as much detail

as possible: how many people are injured; how many vehicles are involved; whether passengers are trapped in vehicles; whether the accident is blocking the road; and any other relevant information. Further advice on er24.co.za states that when calling EMS, remain calm and speak clearly.

Never move injured persons unless you must relocate them to a safer place - they could have broken bones or internal injuries that movement might worsen. Hensberg’s primary advice when taking the wheel is: “Do not drink and drive, and avoid distractions whilst driving.” Additionally, ensure you carry your ID and medical aid card.

According to ER24, the leading causes of vehicle crashes are distracted driving through texting, applying makeup, eating, adjusting the

radio, removing clothing, or arguing with passengers; drunk driving; reckless driving, including speeding, unsafe overtaking, disregarding traffic signs, and dangerous lane changes; poor road conditions; and lack of regular car maintenance, which is essential to prevent accident. caused by mechanical failures.

At home, falls, electric shocks, and accidental poisoning are common causes of trauma. Store medicines, swimming pool chemicals, and household cleaning products in cupboards where children cannot reach them. Keep emergency service numbers readily available and fire extinguishers in easily accessible places. Assemble a well-stocked first aid kit. Call ER24 on 084 124. Passion for electronics turns into success

The determination and talent of a learner of the Dibotswa High School in the Dithakong village in Kuruman, has earned him recognition as a promising young innovator in the Northern Cape.

Recently, Kalafo Matsebe (18) was awarded a bronze medal at the 45th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) held at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Kempton Park from 6 to 10 October.

Apart from his bronze medal, Kalafo is one of eight young scientists who were awarded the Durban University of Technology’s Young Innovator Award. Winners received tablet computers and entry into a 12-month mentorship and incubation support programme valued at R15 000.

“To win an award was very exciting and a very good moment. It left a feeling of greatness and also motivates me to keep going,” he said.

The ISF brought together hundreds of top young scientists from South Africa and around the world. Learners could showcased groundbreaking research and inventive projects across a wide range of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation fields.

For Kalefo, who represented the Kalahari Region, his adventure to the ISF began with a deep-rooted fascination for how things work.

“What drew me to Eskom Expo is the love and the ability I have when it comes to working with electronics,” he said. His research project, “Organ Transport Container”, reflected his natural talent for problem-solving and creativity in building and understanding electronic systems.

He said the Eskom Expo experience has had a profound impact on how he views science and perseverance.

“Eskom Expo has given me motivation to

keep on doing what you believe you can do. Even when you fall, you must pick yourself up and not give up. It has taught me to never let any circumstances define my life,” he said. He hopes to inspire other young scientists from rural areas like his own. “Even when there are challenges that set you back, you should never stop dreaming. Make the impossible possible, because it is only you who can make that difference,” he said.

Matric exams commencing

A total of 16 056 candidates have registered in the Northern Cape for National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

When the NSC examinations commence on 23 October, 14 210 full-time candidates and 1 846 part-time candidates from the province will sit for this important examination. It concludes on 27 November.

In a statement, the Northern Cape Department of Education said it is fully prepared to administer the 2025 NSC examinations.

In 2024, the Northern Cape achieved a pass rate of 84,2%, representing an improvement of 18,2% over the past five years and up from 66% in 2020.

“The Class of 2025 now carries the responsibility of building on this achievement, with the aim of not only improving on last year’s performance, but also exceeding the national average,” the department stated.

The department has implemented a range of targeted interventions to support all learners, with particular focus on progressed and borderline candidates to maximise their potential.

A total of 148 examination centres have been registered in the Northern Cape. The department said all necessary measures have been put in place to prevent irregularities, particularly related to dishonesty and the unauthorised use of electronic devices.

Some 148 chief invigilators have been appointed and trained to manage and monitor exam processes.

All 81 question papers have been set by the Department of Basic Education. The printing, packing and distribution of papers are coordinated with robust security protocols to ensure integrity and traceability.

A rigorous selection process

has been followed to ensure high-quality marking. The following personnel have been appointed: 916 markers; 186 senior markers; 85 chief markers; 21 deputy chief markers; 85 internal moderators; 3 centre managers; 6 deputy centre managers; and 250 examination assistants.

Marking will take place at three designated centres, which will open on 1 December. The marking and capturing of marks will be completed by 12 December.

The Minister of Basic Education will release the national results on 8 January.

The Northern Cape's results will be released on 9 January, followed by the annual matric awards ceremony.

The department urges the Class of 2025 to approach their examinations with honesty, discipline and integrity, in line with the oath they have taken.

Principal wins national award

CHARNÉ KEMP

Micheal Ludick, principal of Kimberley Technical High School (THS), is heading to China to enhance his educational expertise after being named national winner in excellence in Secondary School Leadership at this year’s National Teaching Awards in Johannesburg.

It is annually hosted by the Department of Basic Education acknowledging teachers who achieve extraordinary results with categories including Gr. R, primary and secondary school teaching and leadership, special needs teaching, and subject-specific excellence.

The 38-year-old Ludick expressed shock and honour at receiving the award.

“The award serves as a platform to demonstrate that technical schools and their learners can compete and excel nationally, even against mainstream academic schools,” he says.

“Our vision focuses on being a leading technical institution, implementing a technical curriculum, a three-stream model, and equipping learners with 21st-century skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Central to his success is a measurable and implementable educational leadership and management model that has transformed Kimberley THS from a struggling institution into a national leader in technical education. Under his four-year leadership the school's academic performance has significantly improved, achieving better pass rates and producing a top achiever in the Northern Cape. The school also excels in extracurricular achievements and implementing various sports programmes. Learners have won national competitions, including the Heritage Educational Outreach programme twice. The school was the first from the province to participate in the Constitutional Board, and the provincial junior station commissioner is from the school.

Ludick’s approach focuses on developing learners into job creators. This includes fostering innovative solutions, with 14 learners receiving

bursaries from the Department of Water and Sanitation for their innovations. The school has strong relationships with external companies. It is a national leader in implementing the General Education Certificate and pioneering models for integrating technical subjects in the curriculum.

The award includes international study opportunities in Denmark and China. Ludick plans to learn from these countries’ educational models and bring back best practices. He is currently pursuing a master’s in Educational Leadership and Management, specialising in Technical Education.

His leadership model is centered on empowering educators, learners, and parents by shared decision-making, acknowledgement, and selflessness. He emphasises a positive mindset, hard work, and believing in one’s potential, regardless of humble beginnings like his own in Wrenchville, Kuruman.

“I want to inspire learners to realise that achieving greatness is possible. You determine your achievements through working hard, putting in the effort and caring about other people.”

‘Skoonmaakspan’ se bestaan nodig

HELENA BARNARD

Kontak haar by ronellev@ewt.org.za.

Vanderkloof bounty reaped

A total of 60 anglers from several provinces recently battled it out at Vanderkloof Dam in the Northern Cape for the title of South Africa’s top artificial lure angler.

Anglers and teams from North Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Central Gauteng and the Cape Winelands competed in the South African Artificial Lure Angling Association’s (Saalaa) national championships from 5 to 10 October.

After two challenging days of team competition, Limpopo was crowned the overall winner. The anglers from Limpopo were not only the B-team winners, but also conquered the juniors’, women’s and managers’ competitions.

Northern Gauteng was

crowned A-team winners, as well as champions in the masters’ and development competitions.

The competition week commenced with practice days, giving participants a chance to familiarise themselves with the vast dam and its unique fish populations. For many, it was their first time at Vanderkloof, and the long distances travelled by boat tested both endurance and strategy.

Saalaa competitions demand of anglers to rely solely on artificial lures soft plastics, flies, artificial baitfish and jig heads with no bait allowed. Points are awarded based on species variety and fish size, and all fish are photographed on a measuring board before being released, ensuring sustainability and aligning with International Federation of Sport Angling in Fresh Waters (FIPSed) standards.

Target species included barbel, carp, largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish, largemouth bass, Orange River mudfish, moggel and several kurper species. Cooler water temperatures slowed the normally aggressive yellowfish, requiring careful technique, whilst barbel and

pre-spawning carp provided thrilling opportunities. A standout surprise was the healthy largemouth bass population, with the largest tipping the scales at 3,4kg.

Over the following two days, 22 top anglers faced off in the National Protea Trials, a gruelling individual competition to determine qualification for the 2026 Protea team. With just one angler per boat, strategy, skill and endurance were pushed to the limit.

Junior anglers fished independently, supported only by a skipper driving the boat. Competitors could catch a maximum of five fish per species, adding a strategic edge to the battle.

The three top places in the senior category were claimed by Francois Joubert, Rudolph Venter and Daantjie Botha, while the juniors’ top three places were taken by Tiano Alberts, Josh Stobbart and Christiaan Visagie.

The next national championships will be held at Loskop Dam in 2026, promising bigger competition and even more excitement as artificial lure angling continues to grow in South Africa.

are to the benefit of the projects of the honorary rangers of the South African National Parks (SANParks). Visit the club on Facebook for more information.
