Oor die wêreld heen bestee gesinne glo gemiddeld 156% van hul maandelikse inkomste aan die feestyd, met diegene in Lebanon wat glo tot 688% bestee en dié in Nederland slegs 19%, aldus ’n verslag van World Remit. Volgens die 2024-verslag wat deur TGM Research oor koopgewoontes tydens feestyd saamgestel is, verkies Suid-Afrikaners eerder begrotingsvriendelike en bekostigbare uitgawes, met ’n redelike fokus op versigtige besteding. Klere bly die gewildste

artikel om as geskenk te koop (86%); gevolg deur kosprodukte en drank (72%); speelgoed (48%); elektronika (41%); geskenkbewyse (41%); elektriese huistoestelle (38%); skoonheidsprodukte (37%); versierings (30%); juwele (30%); en reis (23%). Onderaan dié lys is boeke, en skenkings aan liefdadigheid, elk met 19%. Skenkings aan liefdadigheid hoef nie noodwendig ’n uitgawe te wees nie aangesien talle organisasies liefdadigheidswinkels besit, onder meer die Kimberley DBV. Dit is te danke aan liefdadigheid dat die bestuur van die Helen Bishop-huis in Kimberley, waar meer as 60 kinders met spesiale behoeftes en erge gestremdhede heeltyds gehuisves en versorg word, met dankbaarheid op 2025 kan terugkyk. So ook is die bestuur van

die Sally Aucamp-huis, waar volwassenes met fisieke gestremdhede versorg word, “ongelooflik dankbaar vir engele” wat hulle met skenkings ondersteun. Die Walk-By-Faith-sopkombuis in Santa Centre, Kimberley, kon vanjaar weer honger mense voed en behoeftiges met noodsaaklikhede help  te danke aan skenkings. Ook Solly’s Beacon of Hope van Upington plaas ’n lys van dit waaroor dié sopkombuis dankbaar is, en bedank elke skenker persoonlik. Volgens talle bronne word ’n sewe-geskenkreël vir Kersfees voorgestel wat verhoed dat die gee van geskenke buite beheer raak: Iets wat hulle regtig wil hê, iets wat nodig is, iets om te dra, iets om te lees, iets om te doen, een geskenk vir die hele gesin, en een geskenk om aan ander te gee.

High Court dismisses director’s bid to stop own operations CHARNÉ KEMP The High Court in Kimberley has dismissed an urgent application by a disgruntled company director seeking to block his own company from conducting mining operations near Upington. In a judgement delivered on 5 December, Judge Mhpo Mamosebo ruled against Johannes Kruger, a director of Synchroplex (Pty) Ltd, who had alleged the company was engaging in illegal mining activities on Farm Areachap No 426.

The court dismissed the application with a punitive costs order in what appears to be a bitter battle for control within the mining company. Kruger had approached the court, seeking a supervisory interdict to prevent Synchroplex from continuing operations until it could prove it possessed the necessary statutory authorisations. He argued that the company, which holds a mining right awarded in March 2025, was operating unlawfully on three main grounds: absence of a valid Water Use Licence (WUL), inadequate zoning for mining activities, and failure to obtain other relevant

This year’s annual Gun Run in Kimberley saw teams of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), as well as community teams from Galeshewe, the SAPS and Correctional Services, each pulling and pushing a 23mm anti-aircraft gun through the city streets on 10 December, manoeuvring the heavy gun for approximately 7,2km. Beyond resilience and effort, camaraderie and unit pride were also enhanced. This year’s winners were the team of the 104 Battery of 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment, followed by the Galeshewe Community, with 3 South African Infantry (SAI) Battalion in third place. environmental permits. Represented by senior counsel, Kruger relied heavily on reports from external experts John Maré and Geza Douglas Nagy to support his claim. Judge Mamosebo systematically dismantled the applicant’s arguments, accepting Synchroplex’s version that its current activities were lawful. On the zoning dispute, the court rejected the expert opinion of town planner Nagy, who claimed the property was zoned solely for agriculture. Synchroplex produced a zoning certificate from the Dawid Kruiper Municipality during proceedings, confirming that “Portion 2” of the farm, where the

Die wonderlike evangelie van die Kersverhaal is dat die Here die stal, die krip en ’n moedige Maria en Josef gebruik; en dan lees ons van skaapwagters en die heerlikheid van die Here wat rondom hulle geskyn het. Die Here laat ongemaklike plekke van gedaante verwissel na ’n plek waar sy heerlikheid openbaar word. Mag elkeen sy heerlikheid in dié tyd ervaar.

Onthou, dit kan die laaste keer wees KARIN MULLER Die tyd vir die laaste plasing van my rubriek in 2025 het aangebreek. Dit is altyd met gemengde gevoelens dat ek my laaste rubriek van die jaar skryf. Teen hierdie tyd wonder ’n mens hoe dit moontlik is dat die jaar so vinnig verbygevlieg het. Selfs die weke en maande wat gesloer het, is iets van die verlede. Om die laaste rubriek vir die jaar te skryf breek gewoonlik vinniger aan as wat verwag was. Daar is ’n laaste keer vir alles in die lewe. Diegene wat verlof ingesit het, het onlangs hul laaste werksdag vir 2025 gewerk, of gaan binnekort hul laaste werksdag werk. Vir diegene wat aftree, het die laaste werksdag in hul lewe aangebreek. Vir die matrieks het die laaste skooldag aangebreek en die laaste skool-

eksamen is afgelê. Vir studente wat hul studie voltooi het, het die laaste dag op universiteit aangebreek. Om te weet wanneer die laaste van iets gaan aanbreek maak ons opgewonde; en ons kan daarvoor beplan. Daar is egter baie wat ons vir die laaste keer doen of ervaar, waarop ons nie voorberei kan word nie. Mense raak onverwags siek en sukkel om te herstel. Mense is in motorongelukke of beleef liefdesteleurstellings en besef agterna dat daar sekere dinge is wat ’n laaste keer gedoen of ervaar is. Ons gesels dalk vir die laaste keer met iemand sonder dat ons besef dit gaan die laaste keer wees. Ons stel uit om te kuier. Om daadwerklik iets goeds te doen. Om gesonder te leef of meer te oefen. Uiteindelik word ons vir die laaste keer in ons lewe wakker of staan vir die laaste keer op. Vir alles in die lewe is daar ’n laaste keer om iets te doen of iets te beleef. Koester dit.

Nadia Schwirzer ’n skrywersmiddag in dié dorp bygewoon het. Schwirzer, ’n Suid-Afrikaner van geboorte, het op kweekskool haar Duits-Suid-Afrikaanse man ontmoet. Tydens haar onlangse besoek aan Suid-Afrika het sy van die aasvoëlgeoglief by Van Zylsrus gehoor en op haar roete soontoe die skrywersmiddag bygewoon. Sy het nagraads in kreatiewe skryfwerk spesialiseer, is ’n fotograaf, bedrewe hommeltuigloods, en een van haar kortverhale gaan moontlik in ’n kortfilm gestalte kry. Saam met Pieter Pienaar, organiseerder van die kunsteweek en betrokke by die aasvoëlgeogliefprojek, vier persone wat die kunsteweek bygewoon het, asook twee verteenwoordigers van die ATKV-tak Kalahari, het ’n spontane

‘Note suspicious acts, aid victims’ Considering the seasonal influx of farm labourers during harvest time in the Northern Cape’s vinyeards, a rural safety programme by the police’s Social Crime Prevention unit was conducted at a farm on Kanoneiland. The aim was to raise awareness and curb gender–based violence (GBV), femicide, and related crimes affecting workers and the broader community. “The police are committed to sensitising the public, building trust, and reducing the likelihood of crime impacting our community. We urge everyone to report suspicious

activities and support victims of violence,” says Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson. The non-profit organisation Famsa says GBV remains a serious concern in the Northern Cape, where the per capita rates are amongst the highest in the country. Famsa urged victims of violence to seek help by applying for a protection order at the nearest magistrates’ court, developing a safety plan with trusted contacts, emergency numbers, and safe spaces, and accessing counselling through Famsa and the victim empowerment centres of the police. Famsa offers practical support, including drafting safety plans, counselling for

victims, couple counselling services, and programmes for perpetrators such as anger management and conflict resolution. Famsa runs anger management programmes, conflict resolution workshops, and men's dialogues across the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, guiding men to manage anger and adopt constructive dialogue. Violence leaves deep scars: Children exposed to violence often suffer trauma and anxiety, and may normalise aggression. Academic performance, emotional stability and future relationships are affected. Adults carry stress, depression and broken community bonds. Contact Famsa on 0800 014 520.

Dit kan kinders se veiligheid direk beïnvloed. “Ons sien jaarliks dat kinders makliker verwaarloos of selfs mishandel word wanneer volwassenes hul aandag na sosiale aktiwiteite verskuif. Ouers moet verantwoordelik omgaan met alkoholgebruik en ten alle tye in die beste belang van hul kinders optree,” sê September. Kinders word soms alleen by die huis gelos of selfs uitgesluit, veral wanneer ouers by ander geleenthede is. Alkoholmisbruik vererger die situasies en verhoog die kans op verwaarlosing, mishandeling en molestering. “Talle kinders swem in damme en ander waterplekke sonder toesig. Dit is ’n ernstige risiko. Ouers moet seker maak kinders ontvang toesig, en dat kinders nie alleen rondloop of alleen swem nie,” waarsku September. Sy moedig ouers aan om openlik met kinders oor gevare in die gemeenskap te praat, en om duidelike reëls en perke vir die vakansie te stel. Wanneer gesinne na plekke soos strande, winkelsentrums of feeste gaan, beveel September aan dat ouers vooraf met kinders praat en verduidelik dat hulle naby hul ouers of familie moet bly. Jonger kinders moet hul volle name ken, asook hul ouers se name. “Dit help baie as ’n kind verdwaal. Ouers kan ’n eenvoudige armband maak met kontakbesonderhede daarop wat die kind kan dra. Koerant beloof nuwe lewe vir Afrikaans in gedrukte media In ’n era waar talle Afrikaanse koerante hul deure gesluit het, het Novus Media aangekondig dat ’n nuwe weeklikse Afrikaanse koerant, Die Papier, op 6 Maart 2026 bekendgestel sal word. NoordkaapBulletin is een van 21 gemeenskapskoerante in Novus Media se stal, saam met Soccer Laduma, Kick Off en Rooi Rose. Hierdie vernuwende stap volg op die skielike sluiting van toonaangewende Afrikaanse titels soos Beeld en Rapport verlede jaar. Veerpyltjies trek mooi Vanjaar se Pieter Fourie-veerpyltjietoernooi was weer ’n hoogtepunt. Dit is ’n 18de keer in Bloemfontein aangebied, en twee spanne van die Kathu-veerpyltjieklub het meegeding. Die Kreapers-mansspan en die Mygestic4-vrouespan was twee van die 33 spanne van oor die land heen wat hulle vir die toernooi van 5 tot 7 Desember ingeskryf het. Altesaam 23 mansspanne, 8 vrouespanne en 2 junior spanne het deelgeneem. Ook het 100 mans hulle vir die enkelspel ingeskryf, en 49 pare vir die dubbelspel. Paul Groenewald, een van die Kreapers, het twee 180’s gegooi. Faan Maritz van Double Trouble +2, wat bestaan het uit drie lede van Kathu en een van Kimberley, het ook twee 180’s gegooi. Die Vuil Pere-mansspan van die Oos-Vrystaat het die mansafdeling van die toernooi teen die Sharp Shooters, ook van die Oos-Vrystaat, gewen. Die Mali Dart Club-vrouespan van Lesotho het die vroueafdeling teen die Ducktales van Bloemfontein gewen. Volgende jaar se Pieter Fourie-toernooi vind weer in Bloemfontein plaas, van 3 tot 5 Desember.

Die Kreapers van die Kathu-veerpyltjieklub is van links Abri Janse van Vuuren, Paul Groenewald, Ronald Adams en Jack Draaier.

Draf, stap parkrun elke Saterdag Dieter Meyer (links) en Bruce Fordyce ten tyde van die Kimberley-parkrun op 22 November, waarvoor deelnemers ’n tutu kon dra na aanleiding van die “two-two” in die datum. Meyer het op dié dag sy 657ste parkrun voltooi, en Fordyce sy 600ste. Neem elke Saterdag gratis aan parkrun deel en stap of draf 5km. Dit begin om 07:00 of 08:00, afhangend van elke ligging se reëlings. Daag op by die Kimberley-parkrun, by Rooifontein; die Lieberwalt Farm-parkrun, by Vanderkloof; die Kathu-parkrun, by die perdeklub; die Upington-parkrun, in Middelpos; die Aggeneys-parkrun, by die Lemoenplaas-kampeerterrein; die Springbok-parkrun, by die gholfbaan; die Port Nolloth-parkrun, by Kai Kai; of vind uit hoe om ’n parkrun-geleentheid in jou dorp te begin.
