Matrieks van Noord-Kaap verbeter uitslae weer

Soos die vorige jaar is die NoordKaap die provinsie in die land wat die grootste verbetering in sy matriekuitslae getoon het. Boonop het dié provinsie sy posisie as die een met die laagste slaagsyfer agtergelaat en tot in die sesde posisie van nege geklim. Die minister van basiese onderwys, Siviwe Gwarube, het Maandagaand 12 Januarie die uitslae van 2025 se nasionale seniorsertifikaateksamen bekendgemaak. Hiertydens is aangekondig dat KwaZulu-Natal se matrikulante die beste presteer het en ’n slaagsyfer van 90,6% behaal het. Vrystaat is in die tweede plek met 89,3%; Gauteng derde (89,1%); gevolg deur Noordwes (88,5%); Wes-Kaap (88,2%); Noord-Kaap (87,8%); Mpumalanga (86,5%); Limpopo (86,1%) en Oos-Kaap (84,2%). Gwarube het ook bekendgemaak dat die nasionale slaagsyfer van 88% die hoogste is wat nog ooit in die land behaal is. Soos vorige jare het kleiner skole in die Noord-Kaap uitgeblink. Die Hoërskool Douglas en die Hoërskool Hopetown het vir die vyfde jaar agtereenvolgend ’n 100%-slaagsyfer behaal. Die onderwysstelsel het dus sowat 422 000 leerders lank voor gr.12 reeds in die steek gelaat,” sê Carien Bloem, hoof van Onderwysprojekte by AfriForum. Dinsdag teen spertyd is die toppresteerders in die Noord-Kaap tydens ’n geselligheid in Kimberley aangewys en vereer.

Voormalige vryskutjoernalis Onenigheid duur voort skuldig aan verkragting CHARNÉ KEMP
CHARNÉ KEMP Douglas Mthukwane (45), voormalige vryskutjoernalis en woordvoerder vir die departement van onderwys, is Vrydag 9 Januarie in ’n verdoemende uitspraak in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley skuldig bevind dat hy drie vroue, onder wie ’n minderjarige, in die tydperk 2016 tot 2019 verkrag het. Dit is ook openbaar dat hy in 1999 van poging tot verkragting veroordeel is. Hy is toe ’n opgeskorte vonnis opgelê waarin hy drie jaar lank gemeenskapdiens moes doen. Ondanks dié misdaadrekord was hy ’n departementele woordvoerder, nasionale woordvoerder van die vakbondfederasie Saftu, en ’n vryskutnavorser vir die ANC by die Noord-Kaapse Wetgewer totdat vroulike kollegas hul kommer uitspreek het. Mthukwane is aangekla dat hy ’n 14-jarige meisie van Greenpoint wat hy skool toe sou vat, op 30 Mei 2016 eers na sy woonstel in Beaconsfield gebring, gedreig en verkrag het. ln nog ’n voorval het hy op 20 Augustus 2017 ’n vrou langs die pad in Greenpoint voorgekeer en aanwysings gevra. Sy het ingestem om saam in sy motor te ry. Hy het haar na ’n veld geneem, gedreig en verkrag. Op 15 Mei 2019 is hy en ’n vriendin na sy woonstel waar hy haar met getuigskrifte sou help, maar haar gedreig en twee keer verkrag het. Waarnemende regter Sharon Erasmus het bevind dat sy verweer oor die voorvalle merkwaardig ooreenstem. In al die gevalle het hy die vroue met die besit van ’n vuurwapen gedreig - een van hulle het dit gesien - en het hy in woedebuie verval as hulle nie doen wat hy sê

nie. Toe hy in hegtenis geneem is, het hy ontken dat hy gemeenskap met die drie slagoffers gehad het. Nadat DNS-getuienis die teendeel bewys het, het hy skielik aangevoer die vroue wou met hom seks gehad het. Die regter het die vroue se getuienis as geloofwaardig beskou. Hulle het die voorvalle dadelik by naasbestaandes en die polisie aangemeld, en beserings het getoon dat seksuele gemeenskap sonder toestemming plaasgevind het. Die vroue was getraumatiseer deur die gebeure. Dit het een polisielid vier ure geneem om ’n verklaring van een van die slagoffers af te neem. Dié vrou het Mthukwane as ’n vriend vertrou en was so geskok dat sy daarna ure lank geworstel het. Die minderjarige meisie was histeries toe sy die verkragting by haar onderwyser aanmeld. Mthukwane het ook gedurende die verhoor woedebuie gehad, het die regter gesê. Hy het die aanklaer, polisie, joernaliste en politici beledig en blameer vir die verhoor “wat sy reputasie geruïneer en hom deur hel gesit het.” Mthukwane kon ook nie bewyse vir sy aantygings toon nie. Onder kruisondervraging het hy vrae ontwyk, in onsinnige vertellings verval oor sy lewensgeskiedenis, en homself telkens weerspreek. Sy verweer in al die voorvalle kan nie moontlik redelik waar wees nie, het Erasmus bevind. As die minderjarige meisie die seksdaad geïnisieer het soos hy aanvoer, hoekom sou sy dit in ’n histeriese toestand by die onderwyser en polisie as verkragting aanmeld? Indien hy die weldoener van die meisie se sukkelende gesin was soos hy wou voorgee, sal sy hom nie by polisie aangegee het nie. Dit is onverklaarbaar dat die vrou wat hy vir padaanwysings gevra het, in sy weergawe eintlik geld vir seks wou hê sonder dat ’n ooreenkoms oor ’n bedrag bereik is. Sy het die voorval dadelik aangemeld, hoewel sy nie geweet het wie hy was nie. Weke later is sy na die polisiekantoor om te verneem na die vordering van die ondersoek, waar sy toevallig Mthukwane gesien en herken het. Hy is net daar in hegtenis geneem. Sy weergawe dat die derde slagoffer belustig was, is onsinnig want hulle het eers winkel toe gegaan en sy het sy woonstel uitgevee. Adv. Thapelo Matlala, stadsbestuurder van die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit in Kimberley, het beplan om Vrydag 9 Januarie na sy kantoor terug te keer in nog ’n poging om te begin werk nadat sy skorsingstydperk verval het. Die speaker, Dipuo Peters, voer egter aan hy is steeds geskors ná ’n besluit op die vorige dag se spesiale raadsvergadering. Ingeligtes sê die ANC-raadslede was in die minderheid en wou ’n stemming oor Matlala se terugkeer verhoed. Opposisielede sou glo stem dat hy ingevolge die Wet op Munisipale Strukture weer inval, al is die tugproses hangende. Opposisiepartye beskuldig die speaker daarvan dat sy oneties opgetree en die vergadering summier verdaag het. Pontsho Mocwana, EFF-koukusleier, sê daar was verskeie proseduriële foute. “Die speaker het versuim om die vloer oop te stel vir enige debat of oorlegpleging nadat die verslag ter tafel gelê is. Sy het talle besware en teenstrydige standpunte van ander raadslede bloot geïgnoreer. Enige verdere bespreking is effektief in die kiem gesmoor. Op ’n tydstip het sy die vergadering verdaag maar die DA toegelaat om te koukus en toe met die vergadering voortgegaan,” sê Mocwana. Bewerings is deur ingeligtes gemaak dat die skorsing spruit uit die Begrotingstoelae vir Infrastruktuur (BFI) van meer as R2 miljard van die Tesourie aan die munisipaliteit om die waterinfrastruktuur op te knap, geld wat deur “sekeres misbruik wil word vir die komende munisipale verkiesing.” Peters het na die afloop van die vergadering gesê die VF Plus het die eerste klagtes teen Matlala in ’n vergadering geopper. “Die bewerings van die opposisie oor die onwettige verloop van die spesiale raadsvergadering is onwaar. Die raad het korrek opgetree; prosedures is gevolg. ’n Geleentheid vir ’n koukus is verskaf, insette is gemaak, en bespreking is toegelaat. Ons het gehou by raadsreëls wat spreektyd beperk tot vyf minute per item." Peters het einde verlede week gesê Matlala bly geskors en dat ’n dissiplinêre komitee (DK) verhoor op 13 Januarie sou plaasvind. Die ondersoek is voltooi, en ’n paneel is aangestel om die saak aan te hoor. Die uitkoms van die DK sal deur die raad aanvaar word. Sy verwerp bewerings dat sekere mense en politici hul hande op BFI-toelae wil lê. “Ek raai enigeen aan om bewerings van wangedrag by die polisie aan te meld,” sê Peters. Matlala het vroeër aan joernaliste gesê ‘‘die regulasies bepaal dat indien die dissiplinêre proses nie binne drie maande begin het nie, verval die skorsing outomaties.’’ Hy sê sy skorsing het outomaties in Desember verval, “daar is geen klaer nie’’, die aanklagte is ‘‘flou’’ en ‘‘opgeblaas’’. Matlala bevraagteken die grondslag van die aanklagte teen hom, wat spruit uit mediaberigte in Augustus oor korrupsie, twyfelagtige tender-toekennings en onreëlmatige aanstellings. Hy is “ernstig bekommerd” oor vertragings met die munisipaliteit se BFI-projek weens sy afwesigheid van drie maande. Sy onmiddellike prioriteit is voorbereiding van die munisipale begroting wat teen die einde Mei goedgekeur moet word, asook openbare deelname vir die Geïntegreerde Ontwikkelingsplan (IDP). Met die plaaslike regeringsverkiesings wat later vanjaar plaasvind, meen Matlala druk op die munisipaliteit gaan toeneem.

SAPS condemns TikTok skit CHARNÉ KEMP The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has issued an urgent warning to the public following the spread of several "fake" videos on social media that use the image of a high-ranking police official in controversial skits. The office of the Provincial Commissioner confirmed that it is aware of at least two videos circulating on TikTok depicting Brig. Schalk
Andrews, district commissioner of Namakwa. Authorities have officially declared the content to be fraudulent and a direct violation of the SAPS Act. One of the videos involves a scripted comedic scene featuring a TikTok creator and an individual portrayed as Andrews. In the video a man approaches the officer, claiming his wife has been “taken by a Zimbabwean” and pleading for help. A woman interrupts the conversation, accusing the husband of neglecting his wife and choosing alcohol over his family. The video
concludes with the officer laughing and making a derogatory comment regarding foreign nationals and money. The video uses a split-screen format and includes reaction clips of audiences laughing, further framing the senior officer in a satirical and unprofessional light. SAPS leadership has taken a “strong stance” against the unauthorised use of police members' photos and identities. Brig. Die publiek en ondernemings kan ’n simboliese liggie teen R50 elk borg. Die geld word gebruik om Caritas se terapeutiese dienste, wat gratis gelewer word, te volhou. Maatje Brand, bemarker by Caritas, sê die terapeutiese afdeling het in 2025 meer as 15 000 dienste aan gesinne en individue gelewer. Dit sluit in ondersoeke na kindermishandeling, traumaberading, en die versorging van die 80 kinders wat in die Jannie Roux-kinder-en-jeugsorgsentrum in Barkly-Wes gehuisves word. Skenkings word op die aanlynplatform BackaBuddy onder “Light for Kids Against Abuse” hanteer. Ongeag die vreugde oor babas wat op Kers- en Nuwejaarsdag gebore is, word kommer uitgespreek oor die styging van tienerma’s wat geboorte geskenk het. Op Kersdag 2025 is 43 NoordKaapse babas in staatsklinieke en -hospitale gebore. Hiervan is 21 seuns en 22 meisies. In totaal is 1 668 babas op dié dag in die land se staatsinstellings gebore. Die meeste (428) is in Gauteng gebore, gevolg deur KwaZulu-Natal (302). Die tweede minste (88) is in die Vrystaat gebore, met die Noord-Kaap waar die minste
geboortes aangeteken is. Volgens inligting het 130 tienerma’s op Kersdag geboorte geskenk, 90 meer as in 2024. Op Nuwejaarsdag is 1 669 babas in die staatsinstellings gebore, teenoor die vorige jaar se 1 448. In die Noord-Kaap is 50 gebore, waarvan 28 seuns is en 22 meisies. Die meeste Nuwejaarsbabas is in Gauteng gebore, waar 396 hul eerste lewenslig aanskou het. Die nasionale departement van gesondheid het kommer uitgespreek oor die 160 tienerma's wat op dié dag geboorte geskenk het. Dit is 80 meer as die vorige jaar. Die onlangse wegbreek uit werksroetine veroorsaak dat gedagtes soos trae kamele huiwerig is om ’n oase te verlaat. Maar volgens ’n spreekwoord is die lewe nie ’n somervakansie nie. Daarom is ’n klompie voorbeeldige gedagte-kamele reeds volspoed op die pad van 2026. ’n Mens wonder oor die roete van 2026 se pad. Hoeveel daarvan is ’n hoofweg met vloeiende verkeer en bedagsame voertuigbestuurders? Hoeveel van die roete is smal bane met happe aan die teerskouers waar jy hoe lank wik en weeg, mik en terugval, om ’n stroom vragmotors verby te steek? Hoeveel van 2026 se roete het lieflike vistas en horisonne wat meehelp dat jy die lewe sprankelend beleef? Hoeveel barmhartige samaritane is op dié pad wanneer jy ’n probleem ondervind, en hoeveel padvarke gaan jy teëkom? By hoeveel noodgevalle langs die pad gaan jy bereid wees om te stop? Hoeveel van jou goeie voornemens vir dié roete gaan tot by die eindbestemming met jou wees? Het 2026 se roete stop-en-ry punte; of nog erger: woedende betogers teen powere munisipale dienste wie onskuldige motoriste met klippe bestook, of dit uit pure aggressie
doen? Op 2026 se roete is die padtekens na die plaaslike regeringsverkiesings reeds aangebring. ’n Mens kan hoop dat munisipaliteite oor die land heen vanjaar hul GPS’e ingestel het om by hul pligte aan te doen en tyd daar te vertoef - net hul pligte wat volgens regulasies aan hulle toegeken is, niks minder of niks meer nie. Daarby kan ’n mens hoop dat munisipaliteite hierdie pligte sal uitvoer sonder om telkens lofbetuigings te verwag of ’n mediageleentheid daarvan te maak. Uitvoering van hierdie pligte is immers waarvoor hulle ’n salaris ontvang en waarvoor begrotings in plek is. Lofbetuigings is eers vanpas wanneer daardie ekstra myl of drie gestap of gery word. Ook kan ’n mens hoop dat 2026 se roete nie U-draaie het terug na die verlede nie; so ver terug dat apartheid steeds 32 jaar ná die eerste demokratiese verkiesing steeds die skuld vir onlangse flaters kry. Hopelik is daar ook geen U-draaie en vingerwysing na die Covid 19-pandemie nie. Die pad vorentoe lei ’n mens immers na die toekoms, nie na dit wat nie eens meer in die truspieël sigbaar is nie.

Teen liefde kan selfs die wêreld nie weerstand bied nie HANNES NOËTH ’n Nuwe jaar hou altyd soveel beloftes in. In ’n groot mate weet ’n mens die lewe gaan gewoon voort, elke dag het sy dinge, daar is voorspoed en daar is teëspoed, daar is mooi en daar is seer. Dit ken ons almal. Tog is dit asof ’n mens vol verwagting voor ’n nuwe werksjaar staan, ’n nuwe skooljaar. Ouboet se troue maak dat ons sommer vinnig vinnig hierdie jaar binnegaan met ’n groot fees. Wat is dan nou lekkerder as jou seun en sy aanstaande besluit hierdie jaar gaan hulle as ’n gesin saam aanpak. ’n Nuwe begin.
Dit herinner my aan hoe verandering deel van ’n mens se lewe is. In my gedagtes is hy nog die klein seuntjie wat graag met karretjies speel, maar in die werklike lewe het tyd geloop en gaan hy die nuwe jaar as ’n getroude man binne. Dit is kosbaar. Hul jong liefde herinner my daaraan dat ’n mens moet onthou om die mooi en die liefde in die lewe te soek. Ook in ’n nuwe jaar. Die wêreld kan maak wat dit wil, dit kan nie weerstand bied teen liefde nie. By baie van ons het die werklikheid lankal ingeskop dat nuwejaarsvoornemes ’n mens nou nie juis baat of baie help nie.
Maar hierdie jong liefde herinner my ’n mens het nie baie voornemens in jou lewe nodig nie. Leef net liefde. Dit is en bly tog die belangrikste oor al die eeue. Een van die moeilike dinge vir my om te begryp is die opdrag dat ons selfs ons vyande moet liefhê. Dit kom nie maklik nie; is nie vanselfsprekend nie, maar dit dra die beginsel sterk oor.Wees lief, hê lief. En leef dit. Die wêreld is so stukkend en die wêreld is so boos. Besluit jy, om ongeag alles, ongeag wat, gewoon net liefde te leef. En leef dit opreg, van hart, ook in n nuwe jaar. Leef liefde. Altyd. Orals.

KARIN MULLER Ons is nog skaars besig om van die nuwejaarsvieringe te herstel en trek reeds by die middel van die eerste maand van die nuwe jaar. Tyd hardloop afdraende. Die meeste mense is nie net terug by die werk nie, maar dit voel vir hulle asof hulle skaars verlof gehad het. Leerlinge is terug op die skoolbanke. Roetines word hervat. Navorsing wys dat dit vir die gemiddelde mens makliker is om met die aanbreek van iets nuut ’n nuwe begin te maak of ’n nuwe gewoonte aan te leer. Aan die begin van ’n nuwe week. Aan die begin van ’n nuwe maand. Beslis aan die begin van ’n nuwe jaar. Vir die meeste mense wat aan die einde van ’n lang jaar vir ’n oomblik tot stilstand kom of asem skep of roetine breek, gee dit die geleentheid vir nuwe besluite vir die komende jaar. Gesels jy met mense oor hul
nuwejaarsvoornemens is daar so ’n groot verskeidenheid soos daar mense is. Hulle wil gesonder eet. Meer oefen. Minder skinder. Meer stokperdjies beoefen. Minder konflik beleef. Meer slaap inkry. Nuwejaarsvoornemens stem in hierdie opsig baie met ’n begroting ooreen. Dit werk gewoonlik die beste op papier. Die oomblik wat jy skouer aan die wiel moet sit en inderdaad dit prakties toepas raak dit in baie gevalle onverklaarbaar ingewikkeld.Persoonlik dink ek dat, om op die jaar wat verby is terug te kyk en daaruit te leer, ’n goeie ding is. Dit is dalk wys om die goeie saam met jou te wil neem en die minder goeie te wil verander. Dit is juis hier waar nuwejaarsvoornemens inpas. Vir diegene met nuwejaarsvoornemens, asook diegene daarsonder, geniet 2026. Mag die jaar wat voor ons uitgestrek lê met minder uitdagings gesaai wees as die vorige jaar.

Is dit vernoem na die bokkie? Was daar baie van hulle? Ek het baie onbeantwoorde vrae terwyl die pleknaamborde verbyskiet. Dominionville, Lekkerkryvlei, Opraap en dan Ratzegaaiskraal. Wat 'n interessante naam, en wat beteken dit? Wat van die plaasnaam Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein? Dit is mos 'n hele jagverhaal in een asemteug. Die stroopsoet belofte van Mooinooi, of flankeer by Ogies, en die lekkerte by Lekkersing? Ons voorsate het gely ook. Moed opgegee by Putsonderwater. Die naam skilder 'n prentjie van 'n boer wat sy hoed in die stof gooi. Net so eerlik is Hotazel. Die legende wil hê dat die landmeters destyds gekla het dit is "hot as hell", en so het die Kuruman-omgewing sy eie stukkie hel gekry. As jy lank genoeg na 'n landkaart staar, besef jy ons voorsate het nie net plekke en plase benoem nie; hulle het stories vertel. Daar is min lande in die wêreld waar plekname soos prosa of gedigte klink.

Opening ‘century of silent service’ CHARNÉ KEMP Since 1875, the English Freemasons have been a quiet but steady force of philanthropy in the Northern Cape. Philip Kruger, president of the board for the Central District, says a latest mission is increasing transparency and community engagement. “While many pass the Kimberley Masonic Centre on Du Toitspan Road daily, few realise the extent of charity work occurring behind its doors, work now being shared more openly with the public. "We are involved in charity because we are Freemasons. It flows naturally from the nature of our principles. Respect for others and our integrity as brothers demands it of us.” Operating under the United Grand Lodge of England, English Freemasonry is founded on four key pillars: integrity, friendship, respect, and service. For the Central District, led by Grand Master Peet Louw, charity is an "uncompromisable focus".
This past year has seen a flurry of activity across the region, from Mafikeng to Postmasburg. Rejecting the idea that charity is only about financial donations, the "Brethren" have focused on "sweat equity" and personal presence. Highlights of 2025 initiatives include infrastructure repairs. Members repaired roofs, did storm-water management, and painting at various facilities. A wheelchair was donated to a stroke patient in Mafikeng by the Austral Lodge. Stella Lodge and the Central District renovated three bathrooms at the Belgrave Lodge retirement home. Lodges across Mafikeng, Kuruman, Kimberley, and Postmasburg conducted visits and hosted Christmas lunches at old age homes. A tug-of-war day was held to raise funds for CANSA’s breast cancer research. The district ventured into arts through collaboration with the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley. A wall at the District’s property was transformed into a mural.
Themed "Kindness is Contagious," the artwork serves as a public reminder of the power of small, sincere acts. It was created by renowned Johannesburg-based street artist Themba Dreda Malaza. Malaza, founder of Mzantsi Street Exhibits and artist behind the Soweto Towers, was assisted by Marcia Majavu. It serves as a permanent symbol of how small, sincere acts can have far-reaching effects. Looking toward 2026, the District will host a series of open evenings at their Du Toitspan Road building, inviting the public to learn more about their history and work. "These sessions will feature guest speakers on vital community health topics." Additionally, the District plans to introduce music evenings at nursing homes to provide companionship to the elderly and will hold a formal District Remembrance Day on 11 November. Hiermee die inleiding van ’n reeks oor narsisme wat deur ’n Noord-Kapenaar geskryf is. Die persoon, wat van jongs af daaraan blootgestel was, is eers dekades later gereed om hieroor te praat. Hulle leef tussen ons. Sielkundiges verwys na hulle as narsiste. Hierdie mense wat van ander mense se aandag en energie en emosies, positief of negatief, afhanklik is vir oorlewing. Hul instinkte is baie beter as die gemiddelde, normale mens s’n. Hulle kom dalk nie so voor nie, maar hulle is berekende individue – hulle teiken die goedhartiges, hulle teer op die niksvermoedendes, hul planne is sekuur agtermekaar. Altyd ’n stap of twee voor ons. Die woord “narsis” ontketen onwillekeurig ’n prentjie in jou kop. Ondergrondse kerkers. Ver-afgeleë tronke met dik klipmure. Onversorgde liggame. Verwilderde oë. ’n Lys van veroordelings so lank soos jou arm. Ongelukkig is dit nie so maklik nie. Hulle lyk soos ons. Praat soos ons. Leef soos ons. Meester-manipuleerders wat ons so maklik ’n rat voor die oë draai: die vriendelike buurman, die gewilde onderwyser, die plaaslike predikant. In my geval – my eie ma. Wanneer jou pad op ’n latere ouderdom so ’n mens s’n kruis, kan jy uitredeneer waarom hierdie mens eerder verder op sy eie weg moet gaan. Maar dit is wanneer jy van geboorte af aan so ’n persoon onderwerp word, deur hom of haar geleer word en voorberei word op die toekoms, dat dit ’n tameletjie raak om die paaie te laat
skei. Die emosionele ouer-kind-band is sterker as enige staal. As ’n mens intensief navorsing doen oor die onderwerp waarsku die inligting jou dat jy nie net jou eie afleidings mag maak nie. Almal van ons vertel van tyd-tot-tyd ’n leuen, sukkel in ’n mindere of meerdere mate met paranoia, om heeltyd in beheer te wil wees of om nimmereindigende opwinding na te jaag. Dit opsigself maak nie van jou ’n narsis nie. Dit maak van jou ’n normale mens wat jou weg op aarde probeer vind. Ironies genoeg probeer die narsis en slagoffer albei, om verskillende redes, net oorleef. As slagoffers baie moeite doen en hulleself daaraan toewy om te herstel is dit moontlik. Die trauma wat narsiste aanrig, is onmeetbaar en geweldig ingewikkeld. Om so ’n lewe te oorleef is opsigself ’n uitdaging. Narsiste se ego’s is so opgeblaas dat hulle nie sal oorleef as hul ego’s skade ly nie. Die beheer wat hulle oor slagoffers het, die feit dat hulle byna verafgod moet word, die vernietiging van verhoudings – dit alles ter wille daarvan om hul ego’s te beskerm. In die volgende paar maande gaan ek brokkies van my lewensverhaal weergee. Mense skryf om verskillende redes. Sommige mense is bekend en wil graag deur die nageslag onthou word. Ander het ’n storie om te vertel wat mense kan aanraak. My rede? Om vorm te gee aan die wonde en littekens wat ek in my hart ronddra. Om ’n fisieke bewys te hê van ’n lewe wat ek nie wou leef nie. As dit iemand kan help om uit die wurggreep van narsisme weg te breek, soveel beter.

Bek-en-klouseer: Nasionale ramp? HELENA BARNARD Die voorkoms van bek-en-klouseer onder Suid-Afrikaanse vee het krisisafmetings bereik en toenemende druk bestaan om dit as ’n nasionale ramp te verklaar. Theo de Jager, direksievoorsitter van die Suider-Afrika Agri Inisiatief (Saai) en Agri All Africa, het onlangs die uitbreking as ongekend beskryf en na die vinnigstygende gevalle verwys sedert dit in April 2025 in KwaZulu-Natal begin het. Ongeag daarvan dat meer as 930 000 diere ingeënt is, is die siekte nie onder beheer nie. Dit wakker vrese vir uitvoerverbod en hoër vleispryse aan. Sedert April het bek-en-klouseer oor die land heen versprei met die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga, Gauteng en Noordwes wat die ergste hierdeur geraak word. Volgens Saai het boere reeds verliese van minstens R5,6 miljard gely, terwyl vee nie verkoop of verskuif mag word nie. Veevrektes vind plaas, ook by onder meer varke. Voorvalle is ook aangemeld waar kalwers weens bek-en-klouseer vrek, sonder dat enige noemenswaardige siektetekens opgemerk is. Besmette bulle raak onvrugbaar. Die department van landbou het in November aangekondig dat alle beeste

(ongeveer 14 miljoen) geënt gaan word. Duisende boere is egter reeds finansieel in die knyp omdat vee nie verkoop of verskuif kan word nie, en melkerye word uit besigheid uitgeknikker, aldus Saai. Die aankondiging dat alle beeste geënt gaan word, gaan ’n bykomende finansiële las op boere plaas. R300 per kop wat boere volgens die departement van landbou vir die bek-en-klouseer-entstof moet opdok, is te veel.
Die minister van landbou, John Steenhuisen, sou op Woensdag 14 Januarie ’n opdatering oor bek-enklouseer in die land gee. Hy sou ook die strategie en tydlyne uiteensit om die nasionale kudde in te ent met die doel om bek-en-klouseer-vrye status te bewerkstellig soos deur die Wêreldorganisasie vir Dieregesondheid (WOAH) voorgeskryf. Saai dring aan dat die finansiële oorlewing van familieboere sentraal in
alle pogings moet staan om die siekte te beveg, en om die ernstige ekonomiese impak daarvan op die veebedryf te beperk. Die verklaring van bek-en-klouseer as ’n nasionale ramp, ingevolge Suid-Afrika se Wet op Rampbestuur, hou belangrike voordele vir sukkelende boere in en sal die inperking van die siekte versnel. Dit sal onder meer inentingsveldtogte, padblokkades, kontrolepunte, ontsmettingsmiddele en die algehele reaksievermoë teen die uitbraak versterk. In ’n artikel van NWK Arena skryf die veekundige Dawid van Heerden dat ’n biosekuriteitsplan ononderhandbaar is. Hou sover moontlik ’n geslote kudde. Moenie diere koop uit gebiede waarvan die gesondheidstatus onbekend is nie. Indien diere wel gekoop word of terugkeer na die plaas, moet hulle vir minstens 28 dae in kwarantyn gehou word, apart van die res van die kudde. Beperk onnodige beweging van voertuie op en tussen plase. Beperk die beweging van vee tussen plase. Kontak met siektes langs paaie of in nuwe gebiede kan maklik plaasvind. Dip en doseer diere om kontak met moontlike siektevektore te beperk. Bosluise, muskiete, vlieë, muggies en steekvlieë is almal moontlike draers van verskeie siektes.
Ingevolge artikel 17 van die Wet, mag diere nie geskuif, verkoop of vervoer word teenstrydig met enige kwarantynof permitvereistes of -beperkings nie. Vee mag nie sonder geldige permitte van of na die plaas vervoer word nie. Hou deeglik rekord van diere se herkoms, datum van beweging en permitnommers. Volg ’n entingsprogram wat saam met ’n veearts of dieregesondheidkundige opgestel is. Dit moet nie net aan staatsvereistes voldoen nie, maar ook aangepas wees vir die spesifieke risiko’s van jou boerdery. Ontsmet voertuie en toerusting wat op en van die plaas beweeg. Die gebruik van ‘n voertuigdip kan help om te voorkom dat siektes vanaf openbare paaie die plaas betree. Die ontsmetting van spuitnaalde is noodsaaklik om te voorkom dat siektes tussen diere binne dieselfde kudde versprei. Stel ’n higiëne-beleid vir werkers en besoekers in. Die gebruik van voetbaddens, asook klere of oorpakke wat slegs op die plaas gedra en gewas word, verminder die oordrag van siektes van elders. Identifiseer siek diere betyds. Isoleer siek diere om verdere verspreiding te voorkom. Behandel vinnig en korrek. Verkeerde of onoordeelkundige gebruik van antibiotika en middels kan weerstandigheid veroorsaak.

These sophisticated crimes are increasingly targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly young people in rural communities where unemployment and desperation create prime conditions for exploitation. Through means that can ultimately result in digital human trafficking, criminals are exploiting social media platforms to ensnare victims through increasingly sophisticated methods. By means of social media recruitment, traffickers masquerade as modelling agents on Instagram, offering lucrative photoshoots in Johannesburg with “travel and accommodation included.” What appears to be a golden opportunity often proves to be an elaborate trap. Fraudulent employment offers appear on Facebook as advertisements promising domestic work in Cape Town or “hospitality positions abroad” typically request identity documents and upfront “processing fees” – clear warning signs of trafficking operations. Technological control is then put in place once victims accept these offers, where traffickers monitor their movements through WhatsApp location sharing and demand access to passwords, making escape virtually impossible. A disturbing new trend involves forcing victims to perform via webcams and livestreams, with traffickers selling access to exploitative content. Rural communities face particular risk. A teenager might receive promises of educational scholarships in Pretoria, only to have their documents confiscated upon
arrival and be forced into labour or sexual exploitation. Another threat is cyberstalking, which operates continuously through emails, text messages, and social media. Perpetrators employ spyware, GPS tracking, and false accounts to monitor victims, causing severe psychological harm including anxiety, fear, and social isolation. Fortunately, South Africa’s Cybercrimes Act criminalises cyber harassment and stalking, providing victims with legal recourse. Citizens should remain wary of unsolicited job offers abroad; requests for personal documentation; promises of quick financial gains; repeated unwanted digital communications; and suspicious profiles or spyware on devices. Implement the following protective measures: 1. Restrict Facebook posts to “Friends Only” rather than public viewing. Disable WhatsApp’s “Last Seen” and “Read Receipts” features, and set Instagram accounts to private mode. 2. Protect personal information by never sharing identification numbers, addresses, or phone numbers in public forums. Avoid posting specific school or workplace locations, and refrain from announcing travel plans on social media. 3. Report any and all suspicious activity and alert authorities to suspicious job offers requesting passport copies. Document and report persistent unwanted communications, and inform community leaders of threatening behaviour in local WhatsApp groups Famsa emphasises that every individual has a responsibility to protect themselves and their communities. Citizens should educate family and friends about online safety and report suspicious behaviour immediately. Bursary programme unlocks future Yonela Ngcwelekazi Sicina (25) from the Noupoort community is building her career in social work through her role with the Department of Social Development (DSD) in Philipstown. As a beneficiary of a local bursary programme, she is committed to giving back and hopes to return to Noupoort in the future - whether through a community initiative or her own efforts - to support and encourage others in her hometown. Born and raised in Noupoort, Sicina was brought up under her grandmother's care while her mother worked long hours as a nurse. After her mother’s passing, she briefly considered following in her footsteps, but soon realised her true calling was in social work. “I was always focused on passing and moving forward. Losing my mother motivated me to work even harder to create a better future for myself. “But I realised I didn’t have the heart for nursing; I wanted a career where I could make a real difference in people’s lives,” she explains. Awarded a bursary from the Noupoort Wind Farm in 2019, the financial support helped ease the burden on her father and aunt and enabled her to devote her full time to her

studies at the University of Fort Hare. After graduating in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Social Work qualification, she began her career as a social work intern at the DSD in Philipstown. Now a permanent employee, her daily work involves supporting children, families, older persons, and individuals living with disabilities.
This is a role she describes as both demanding and deeply fulfilling. “Every day brings new challenges. But being able to help someone, sometimes an entire family, makes it all worth it,” she says. Looking ahead, Sicina aims to further her education by pursuing an honours degree and eventually a master’s qualification. She aspires to do so while continuing to gain practical experience in the field. Her message to young people in her community is: “Focus on your studies, find what you’re passionate about, and choose a degree that opens doors rather than limits them. Work hard, equip yourself, and chase what truly excites you.” Launched in 2018, the Noupoort Wind Farm Bursary Programme offers learners from Noupoort the opportunity to study at recognised universities and earn accredited bachelor’s degrees. It covers fund covers tuition fees, accommodation, books and a monthly living allowance. Furthermore, mentoring support is provided to students to help them deal with the pressures and expectations of tertiary education.

CBC: 100% pass rate for 15th year St Patrick's CBC in Kimberley is extremely proud of the Class of 2025 and the excellent results they have achieved. These results reflect not only academic ability, but also perseverance, commitment, and real determination to give their best throughout the year. The school is delighted to celebrate a 100% pass rate for the 15th consecutive year - a significant milestone that speaks to the consistency, stability, and strength of its academic programme. achieved Bachelor's Degree passes, with 51 learners qualifying for Bachelor's study, once again highlighting the high standards upheld at St Patrick's CBC. Adventure awaits those who brave the outdoors
Mounds of thrilling trails up ahead Cyclers can get ready for the commencement of the Oryx Unbound Gravel Series, with Race2theSky first in line on 7 February.
Two adventure rides, which are non-competitive, are scheduled.
This is followed by the Matsa (Petrusburg) on 28 March; Sungazer (Bloemfontein) on 30 May; Race2TheKaroo (Hopetown) on 29 August; and Battle of the Bikes (Jacobsdal) on 3 October. On top of this, two adventure rides, which are non-competitive, are scheduled. The Sandstone Unbound, from 23 to 26 April, takes place in the Witteberg mountains with cyclers aiming to conquer 270km of gravel spanning four days of riding. Taking part in the Unbound 200, from 19 to 23 October, cyclers cover 439km of gravel roads across battlefields in the Northern Cape and Free State. This is a five-day ride. The first event of the Gravel Series, Race2TheSky, takes place in the background of the Uitzicht Game Lodge near Fouriesburg in the Eastern Free State. The route takes cycles over a mix terrain of gravel roads, hills, and farm roads, with 25 climbs in total. Choose from one of three distances - Unbound (100 Miler or 165km), Quest (86km) or Dash (50km). In preparing for a race, hydration
and cramp management “are your best friends,” stated Oryx Endurance, sharing the following advice: ■ Camel pack - Even with water stations provided along the route, carry your own life-support. A hydration pack lets you sip constantly without losing your line on the gravel. ■ Salt and magnesium - Do not wait for the twitch. Pop those electrolytes early and keep the pistons moving. ■ “Emergency shot” - Keep a cramp-blocker or pickle juice in your pocket for that "in case of emergency" moment. ■ Oasis - Pull over at the water stations. Grab a banana, and refill your bottles. ■ Experiencing a mid-climb crisis? Stop and unclip before you tip. Stretch it out, knead that muscle like sourdough, and walk for a minute before spinning away in your easiest gear. Registrations for Race2TheSky is already open. Reflecting on parkrun South Africa’s remarkable success since its inaugural event on 12 November 2011, Bruce Fordyce says the reality has far exceeded their wildest dreams. Fordyce, president and founder of parkrun South Africa and nine-time Comrades Marathon winner, recalls the inaugural day when just 26 people finished and four volunteers helped out. The contrast with today’s figures is striking. Fordyce said participation
remained robust throughout 2025, even during the coldest winter months.The year 2025 saw nearly 1,75 million individual participations at South African parkruns, with 99 893 first-timers taking part. During 2025, 18 new parkruns commenced, bringing the total to 229 events supported by 72 ambassadors and 390 event directors. “The immense health and wellness benefits that parkrun provides cannot be measured.”
