Learnershipoffers valid entrypoint

Five young people from De Aarand surrounding towns have started athree-year artisan training learnership, opening apractical pathway into technical careers,while responding to thegrowing demand for skilledartisans in thearea.

Harrisinah Theka, economic development managerat De Aar SolarPower,saidthe initiativeisaligned with the PixleykaSeme District’s development.

“Asthe renewable energy sector continues to expand across the Northern Cape, thereisa growingneedfor skilledtechnicalworkers

“Atthe same time,many young people struggletoaccesspractical trainingopportunities

“This programme provides a clear, hands-on routetoqualification while improvinglongterm employmentprospects,” shesaid.

DrawnfromDeAar,Britstownand Philipstown, the participants were selected through ascreeningprocess that includedawritten electricalassessmentand interviews

with trainingproviders.

They will completetheir trainingthrough the Artisan TrainingInstitute(ATI) in Kimberley, with practical experience takingplace at De Aar SolarPower

Thelearnership combines structured theoretical training with hands-onexperience,enablingparticipants to complete Phases 1, 2and 3, as well as a qualifyingtrade test to become industrialelectricians

“Although Ihad the theory, it’s difficult to find programmes that offer both trainingand hands-onexperience This is an importantstepfor me.”

Alsopartofthe programme is Patience Bonolo Goeiman (31) from De Aar,the only womaninthe group.

Shealready hasindustry experience,havingpreviously worked on asolar plantasa semi-skilledelectrician and later spentfouryears with the De BeersGroup as amaintenance operator

“Theseroles helpedmebuild practical skills and confirmed that this is the field Iwantto work in,” said Goeiman. At the endofthe three-year programme,the participants will qualifyasindustrialelectricians,improvingtheir chances of securing work within the localeconomy
