Hoewel ’n daling in moordsake in die Noord-Kaap aangeteken is, toon die jongste amptelike misdaadstatistieke vir die provinsie dat ander gewelddadige kontakmisdade en veral seksuele misdrywe skerp toegeneem het. Dié statistiek vir die eerste kwartaal van die 2026-’27-boekjaar wat die tyd-

perk van 1 April tot 30 Junie dek, toon ’n kommerwekkende misdaadsituasie vir vroue en kinders. Hierdie statistiek is op Vrydag 4 September deur brig. Samuel Mathe, provinsiale hoof van die misdaadregister, in die teenwoordigheid van lt. genl. Koliswa Otola, provinsiale polisiekommissaris, aangebied. Luidens die statistieke is messe in 18 moordsake, skerp voorwerpe in 4 sake, vuurwapens in 5 sake, stomp voorwerpe en liggaamsdele en klippe

of stene in drie sake gebruik. Die meerderheid gewelddadige voorvalle (moord, poging tot moord en ernstige aanranding) spruit direk uit argumente, misverstande, uitlokking of bakleiery. Dit was die oorsaak van 14 moorde, 412 pogings tot moord en 759 ernstige aanrandingsake met die doel om ernstig te beseer. Wraak daarenteen was die oorsaak van 1 moord, 2 pogings tot moord en 32 ernstige aanrandings. Hoewel die aantal moorde met 22

sake gedaal het (van 74 tot 52 sake, ’n daling van sowat 29,7%), is die res van die aantal kontakmisdaadsyfers verontrustend. Seksuele misdrywe het met 32,9% toegeneem, van 280 tot 372 sake, terwyl verkragting met 43,4% toegeneem het, van 198 tot 284 sake. Volgens nasionale verhoudingsdata het die Noord-Kaap die tweede meeste verkragtings, met 20,7 verkragtings per 100 000, ná die Oos-Kaap met 22,3 per 100 000 mense.

Hospitaal stel verweer CHARNÉ KEMP Een van die dokters by ’n NoordKaapse private hospitaal het op Vrydag 4 September in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley in sy getuienis beweer die slagoffer van ’n beweerde verkragtingsvoorval het teen medici se advies op bykomende medikasie aangedring. Die dokter het in die siviele geding van ’n onderwyser teen die private hospitaal en een van sy werknemers getuig waarin meer as R1,9 miljoen geëis word. Die eiser beweer dat sy in 2017 verkrag is terwyl sy as ’n pasiënt in die hospitaal opgeneem was. Luidens die hofstukke beweer die vrou sy is gedurende die nag in haar hospitaalkamer deur ’n personeellid wat aan diens was, verkrag. Sy voer aan dat sy weens sterk medikasie wat deur hospitaal-personeel aan haar toegedien is, benadeel is. Dit het haar slaperig, traag en nie in staat gelaat om weerstand te bied of tot die dade in te stem. Sy het weens haar mediese toestand en die medikasie nie wetlik tot enige daad ingestem nie. Weens die voorval eis sy sowat R1,9 miljoen gesamentlik van die instelling en die vermeende verkragter. Die skadevergoeding behels: ■ R750 000 vir algemene skade-vergoeding weens pyn, lyding en post-traumatiese stressteuring (PTSS); ■ R560 000 vir toekomstige mediese, sielkundige en psigiatriese behandeling; ■ R348 000 vir vorige verlies aan inkomste omdat sy 12 maande lank nie haar maandelikse salaris kon verdien nie; ■ R261 000 vir toekomstige inkom-

ste-verlies weens verdere behandeling wat sy moet ondergaan; en ■ R10 000 vir historiese mediese koste. Haar regspan voer aan die hospitaal het ’n wesenlike risiko geskep deur manlike versorgers snags onbewaakte, vrye toegang te gee tot die kamers van kwesbare, vroulike pasiënte wat medisyne gebruik. Die hospitaal ontken enige aanspreeklikheid en beveg die eis ten sterkste. In hul verweerskrif voer die hospitaal aan die man was nie ’n gekwalifiseerde manlike verpleër in hul diens soos beweer word nie, net ’n versorger. Die hospitaal ontken dat enige verkragting op hul perseel plaasgevind het. Hul regspan het in hul verweer aangevoer dat sou die hof bevind seksuele omgang het wel plaasgevind, was dit met die eiser se toestemming, of selfs deur haar geïnisieer. Die hospitaal voer verder aan indien die hof bevind verkragting het plaasgevind, die man buite die omvang van sy dienspligte opgetree het. Gevolglik kan die hospitaal nie aanspreeklik gehou word vir sy dade nie. Hulle hou vol dat hul medikasieen sekuriteitsprotokolle te alle tye voldoende was om die veiligheid en integriteit van hul pasiënte te verseker. In sy getuienis het die dokter aangevoer die betrokke bestuurder het ’n deeglike ondersoek gedoen en dat hy dié bestuurder vertrou het dat sy verklarings van alle tersaaklike personeel wat aan diens was en lig kon werp, verkry het. Die polisie het ook hul eie ondersoek gedoen. Die verhoor is onbepaald uitgestel om ’n verdere verhoordatum te bepaal.

Block-saak sleep steeds voort CHARNÉ KEMP Die uitgerekte korrupsiesaak waarin John Block, voormalige provinsiale ANC-leier, en ander oudhooggeplaaste amptenare van knoeiery met die bouwerk van die psigiatriese hospitaal buite Kimberley aangekla word, haak steeds in die voorverhoorfase vas, met die verhoor wat nog ver in die toekoms lê. Op Vrydag 4 September is voorstelle in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley oor hoekom sekere aansoeke om hul vervolging te staak teruggetrek gaan word, en hoe ander sal voortgaan, dit nog voordat die verhoor eers begin het. Intussen het sekere beskuldigdes ook hul regsverteenwoordigers vervang. Die aangeklaagdes - van wie sommige al in 2023 aangekeer is - sluit in John Fikile Block, voormalige LUR vir vervoer, paaie en openbare werke en voormalige Noord-Kaapse ANC-leier (wat op parool is vir ’n onverwante bedrogsaak); voormalige departe-

mensshoofde soos Patience Mercia Mokhali, Motlalepula Elias Selemela, en Ruth Palm, Babereki Consulting Engineers CC en sy direkteur Tshegolekae Motaung. Die ander is Lourencia Crause, Louis Adriaan van Niekerk, Monyahi Winston Modisa, en Edward Charles Pullen Petzer in persoon en as direkteur van Strabismis Trading (Pty) Ltd, wat in fidusiêre hoedanighede aangekla word. Die beskuldigdes staar klagtes van bedrog, korrupsie, geldwassery en die oortreding van die Wet op Openbare Finansiële Bestuur (PFMA) in die gesig. Die bou van die hospitaal het in 2005 begin met ’n aanvanklike begroting van R297 miljoen. Dié begroting het uiteindelik tot miljarde rande opgeskiet weens herhaaldelike vertragings, swak vakmanskap, onreëlmatige verkrygingsprosesse en die herhaaldelike verandering van kontrakteurs. Die finansiële nadeel vir die staat

word nou op meer as R88 miljoen beraam, wat tot bykomende korrupsieklagtes teen al die beskuldigdes gelei het. Die hospitaal is eers ses jaar gelede teen R2 miljard voltooi. Dié saak volg ook ná die Suid-Afrikaanse Menseregtekommissie (MRK) se verslag oor die krisis by die hospitaal. Die MRK het bevind dat ’n “sistemiese en wydverspreide” krisis die hospitaal in ’n toestand van gevorderde “infrastrukturele verval” en operasionele verlamming gelaat het. Dit het die pasiënte se grondwetlike regte op waardigheid, veiligheid en lewe geskend. Kernfasiliteite soos die apteek, wassery en lykshuis moes reeds gesluit word omdat dele van die hospitaal feitlik onbruikbaar is. Die voorverhoor is tot 5 November uitgestel, en die aansoeke om ontslag word op 23, 24 en 27 November aangehoor.

Gesin van Hoopstad in hof oor vulstasie-bedrog CHARNÉ KEMP Vier lede van ’n gesin het in die hof in Hoopstad op aanklagte verskyn van onder meer bedrog, diefstal en geldwassery by die R700 Truck Stop-vulstasie in die dorp, waar sommige van hulle vroeër werksaam was. AO Fakiswa Matoti, Valke-woordvoerder, sê Pieter (63), Elizabeth (62), Marnu (32) en Estean Smit (32) het op 31 Augustus in die hof verskyn – dieselfde dag as wat hulle in boeie geslaan is. Elkeen is borgtog van R5 000 toegestaan en moet weer op 16 September in die gespesialiseerde handelshof in Bloemfontein verskyn. Ná die ondersoek is lasbriewe vir die inhegtenisneming van die beskuldigdes gemagtig en op 31 Augustus uitgevoer.

Die saak word na die hof vir gespesialiseerde handelsmisdaad in Bloemfontein oorgeplaas, vir verdere vervolging. Luidens ’n verklaring van Lötter and Associates-prokureurs in Hoopstad het dié firma die afgelope drie jaar saam met die Valke die ondersoek oor beweerde onreëlmatighede by die R700 Truck Stop en ander ondernemings in die dorp uitgevoer.

Futuristic cars start journey A fleet of solar-powered vehicles are tackling a journey of more than 2 500 km across South Africa, and not one of them will use a drop of petrol. In this 2026 Sasol Solar Challenge where the futuristic vehicles will also be seen on Northern Cape roads, the real test is not who crosses the finish line first, but who can keep a sun-powered car running, day after day, amidst unpredictable weather conditions. Dr Bruce Crossey, public relations (PR) and communications lead, says what makes the event so extraordinary is not just the distance that needs to be covered, but who is behind the wheel, and who built the cars in the first place. Homegrown teams from South African universities and independent innovators will take on the challenge alongside crews coming in from abroad. To compete, every car on the grid must have been designed and built from the ground up by the team driving it, meaning that no two vehicles are the same. “Each solar car acts as a rolling engineering thesis, the physical manifestation of years of late nights, failed prototypes, and stubborn optimism distilled into a vehicle that runs on sunlight alone,” Crossey remarks. Each day of the challenge, teams need to cover between 250 km to 300 km. Running alongside the Sasol Solar Challenge is the Schools Programme, an initiative designed to spark awareness, excitement, and opportunity for school learners in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem). As the solar cars pass through designated control stop towns (compulsory checkpoints teams must reach along the route), the Schools Programme rolls out hands-on activations. Learners have the opportunity to rotate through stations covering solar technology, e-mobility, and robotics, using real toolkits to get a genuine, practical taste of Stem in action, and members of the public are welcome to join. Herstelstryd duur voort CHARLOTTE BRUCE Vier jaar nadat ’n ernstige kop-aan-kop-motorbotsing op 20 Mei 2022 haar lewe verander het, wag Jolandy Dimond (49) steeds op verdere operasies. Sedert die ongeluk in McDougalstraat, Kimberley, het sy reeds 18 operasies ondergaan en altesaam 24 weke tydens verskeie hospitalisasies by die Lenmed-hospitaal en later Mediclinic Gariep deurgebring. Weens ernstige beserings aan haar regterbeen is sy steeds op krukke aangewese. Dimond was die bestuurder van ’n Volkswagen Citi Golf en was byna ’n uur lank in die verwronge wrak vasgekeer voordat reddingswerkers haar met reddingskake bevry het. Die gebeure van daardie dag is steeds helder in haar geheue. “My voet was agter die versnellerpedaal vasgevang. Die pyn was oorweldigend en daar was onmiddellik die besef dat my lewe nooit weer dieselfde sou wees nie,” vertel sy. Tydens die botsing het sy ’n gebreekte borsbeen, gebreekte ribbes, ’n ontwrigte regterheup en ernstige frakture aan haar regterbeen opgedoen. Haar been het op vier plekke tussen haar knie en voet gebreek en bly een van die grootste struikelblokke op haar pad na herstel. Volgens Dimond het selfs asemhaal geweldige inspanning geverg. Die beserings het haar van haar onafhanklikheid ontneem. “Om van die bed na die badkamer of my rolstoel te beweeg, het soms byna 45 minute geneem. Ek kon nie stort of eenvoudige dinge op my eie doen nie. Daar was dae wat ek uit frustrasie gehuil het omdat ek so hulpeloos gevoel het.”

Nadat een van haar wonde septies geraak het, het sy akute nierversaking ontwikkel en was vier dae lank in ’n koma. Jare se afhanklikheid van krukke het later ook tot ’n skoueroperasie gelei. Haar rehabilitasie duur steeds voort. Haar man, Jonathan Dimond (44), sê die ongeluk het hul lewe onherroeplik verander. Omdat hy aan mitochondriale miopatie ly, ’n toestand wat

Gold struck with top water management The Sol Plaatje Municipality and its consulting engineers, Bigen Africa, have clinched a top national award for engineering excellence presented by the industry association Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa). At the Cesa Aon Awards on 20 August, Bigen Africa in working with the Sol Plaatje Municipality walked away with the excellence award for projects under R50 million – awarded for the game-changing Pressure and Network Zone Management Project (PNZMP). In a press release, the municipality confirmed the project was part of its massive

R2,5 billion Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI), being rolled out for bulk water supply infrastructure repairs and upgrades. The PNZMP uses data-driven pressure management and smart technology to make every drop count. The results are massive: 2 030 megalitres of water saved every year; a 27% reduction in network water losses; capacity unlocked for 6 900 more households; and over R34 million saved annually. “We have improved reliability and built a more resilient network for our people,” Siva Puckree, the municipality’s BFI project manager, enthused.

Green thumb made lucrative For young women, particularly in sectors such as agriculture where access to land, funding, training and networks often remains limited, barriers can be difficult to overcome. Rather than being discouraged by realities, the 24-yearold Reaipela Kgaje saw an opportunity where others saw an unused piece of land. Near Kuruman, the family that owned 2.5 hectares of abandoned riverside land gave her permission to farm it. With no land of her own, no formal agricultural qualification and no start-up funding, Kgaje decided to take a chance. Starting small and learning as she went, she focused on restoring the neglected land. Today, that decision has grown into Molapo Eco Farm, a business creating opportunities for both Kgaje and her community. Growing up in Maruping Village, her connection to farming started early. Watching her mother tend a small garden sparked a passion that stayed with her throughout her school years. Kgaje learned by doing. She started with a single hectare and approached farming one step at a time, solving problems as they emerged. Restoring the neglected land was one of her first challenges. Unable to afford commercial fertilisers, she sourced manure from local households and used it to improve the soil. Today, she also uses artificial intelligence tools to strengthen her farming skills and support decision-making on the farm. Her motivation extended beyond producing crops. From the beginning, Kgaje saw farming as a way to contribute to her community, create jobs and support local food security. “I wanted to build more than a farm. I wanted to create opportunities for people around me, contribute to food security and show that it is possible to

build a successful business in our community,” she says. Like many small-scale farmers, Kgaje’s biggest obstacles extended beyond the field. Agriculture remains a capital-intensive industry, and building a business without funding meant finding creative ways to access the resources she needed. Every input had to be sourced, bartered for or built from scratch. It was while navigating these challenges that Kgaje came across Anglo American’s Enterprise Development Circular Economy Start-Up Bootcamp through a Facebook post. The programme supports early-stage and aspiring entrepreneurs by helping them build the business skills needed to turn promising ideas and small businesses into sustainable enterprises. Participants receive training in areas such as business planning, financial literacy and

pitching, while also gaining the opportunity to compete for seed funding to help accelerate their growth. The programme helped Kgaje strengthen the business side of her operation and provided a platform to showcase its potential. She went on to win R150 000 in grant funding during the final pitch competition, enabling her to invest in equipment and expand production at Molapo Eco Farm. Her ambitions are already set on the next chapter: expanding to six hectares, increasing her retail customer base, and creating more employment opportunities within her community. “Farming is not an easy business,” she says. “You have to have a passion for it. Keep learning, and never give up, because every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Hard work, consistency and patience are the key.”

Wentrofee bly in span se kas NICK PRETORIUS Die Kakamas-rugbyklub het Saterdag 5 September in winderige toestande die ZF Mgcawu-liga-eindstryd vir die tweede agtereenvolgende keer gewen nadat hulle een van die beste spanne van vanjaar, die Defence Force Collegians (DFC), met 24 - 5 gewen het. Weens die lastige wind wat voortdurend tydens dié wedstryd op die rugbyveld van die Hoërskool Martin Oosthuizen in Kakamas gewaai het, is talle hanteerfoute aan albei kante begaan. Die tuisspan het die DFC vroeg onder druk geplaas en dit het in die tiende minuut ná volgehoue druk meegebring dat Heyneke van der Heever hul eerste drie kon druk. Kort voor rustyd het Kakamas se Jean Fourie ná ’n verwoede aanval deur die tuisspan se agttal oorgeduik. Connie de Jager, losskakel, het die maklike doelskop deur die pale gejaag en skielik was die DFC op die agtervoet. Die rustydtelling was 12 - 0. In die tiende minuut van die tweede helfte het Kakamas vroeg toegeslaan toe Heyneke van der Heever vir sy tweede drie oorgebars het ná nog ’n stormloop op die DFC se doellyn. En 20 minute later het die nommer-seweflank, Herman Visser, swak verdediging van die DFC uitgebuit om 50 m af te sit doellyn toe vir Kakamas se vierde drie. De Jager het met sy tweede doelskop geslaag (24 - 0) om die uitslag van die wedstryd bo alle twyfel te stel. Kort voor die einde van die wedstryd het die DFC van sy kenmerkende hardlooprugby uitgestal. Die losskakel Savio Stevens het met ’n individuele poging in die hoekie oorgeskuif vir sy span se enigste vyfpunter. Kakamas se verdediging het die DFC se aanvalle by tye gefnuik. Die DFC het talle hanteerfoute weens die lastige wind begaan. In die vaste fasette het hulle hul man teen die swaargewigte van Kakamas se voorhoede gestaan. Morné Kasper, kaptein van die DFC, het sy hart vir sy span op die aanval en verde-diging uitgespeel. Vir Kakamas het Herman Visser uitgeblink. Die DFC se gereelde heelagter, Cayden Daniels, moes Saterdag op skrumskakel diens doen in die plek van Phillip Green wat onlangs in die Griekwas se o.21-span ingesluit is.

Die DFC het met hul suksesvolle deelname aan die ZF Mcgawu-liga gekwalifiseer om volgende seisoen aan die Superliga-B deel te neem terwyl Kakamas met hul triomf na die Superliga-A afdeling opskuif. Vanjaar se stryd het bewys dat Kakamas en die DFC die twee beste spanne in die ZF Mcgawu-liga was. Kakamas het Saterdag sowat 75% balbesit gehad, maar moes met die wentelling van 24 - 5 tevrede wees. Die wedstryd het ook sy drama opgelewer. Die skeidsregter, Anton du Toit, is by tye uitgejou deur die DFC-ondersteuners oor twyfelagtige beslissings waartydens van die DFC-spelers soms met laat en gevaarlike duikslae gelak was. Daar was talle beserings aan albei kante wat ’n aanduiding van ’n brutale aanslag was. “Ons sal opstaan, ons wonde lek, en aanhou veg vir sukses volgende seisoen,” het ’n DFC-spanbeampte ná die wedstryd gesê. ■ In 2024 het Upington Dorp en Kakamas die trofee gedeel.

Only tenderers who comply with the denition of a Targeted Enterprise under Clause C.2.1.1 and are at least 51% Black owned and who is an EME or QSE or cooperative, are eligible to tender. Hy hoop al jare nie meer nie, droom nie meer nie – hy weet nou daardie dag wat dinge gaan omdraai gaan nie meer kom nie. Hy het eintlik oorkant die pad so bietjie papiere opgetel. Iets positiefs. Vir homself. Uit 'n voertuig word hy geroep: “Ou Flenters, kom hier.” Dit is nie sy naam nie. Toe het hy nog 'n naam gehad. Daarom reageer hy nie eers nie. Eers later besef hy hierdie roep na Ou Flenters, is vir hom bedoel. Hy verstaan nogal dat hy flenters gelyk het. Sy skoene van 'n paar dae op straat was nie meer

Inspirasie steeds onuitputlik KARIN MULLER Op 12 September 2014 het ’n rubriek van my vir die eerste keer onder die naam “Potpourri” verskyn. Die voorafgaande sewe maande is dit onder my eie naam geplaas. Meer as 12 jaar se rubrieke, waarvan 12 jaar Potpourri-rubrieke was. Meer as 600 rubrieke altesaam. Hierdie uitsonderlike pad het my ’n paar dinge geleer. Ons is tot meer in staat as wat ons dink. Ons onderskat onsself maklik. Baie maal gee ons vir ander mense meer krediet as wat ons vir onsself gee. Tyd vlieg. Eersdaags word Kersversierings in die winkels opgehang. Die jaar, wat voel of dit skaars begin het, spoed einde se kant toe. Ons probeer oorleef. Ons probeer staande bly. As ons sien, is dit Maandag. En weer Maandag. En wéér Maandag. So stap die jare aan en gaan ons lewe verby. In baie gevalle kyk ’n mens terug en voel dit

vir jou of jy ’n dekade of twee gemis het. Daar is wonderlike, interessante mense op hierdie aarde. Mense wat vreemde dinge aanvang en unieke dinge vermag. Mense wat alledaagse sleurwerk lekker laat lyk. Mense met deursettingsvermoë wat weier om op te gee. In die alledaagse geharwar skuil interessanthede en snaaksighede – wat alles ons menslikheid na vore bring. Uiteindelik is ons almal mense wat mekaar nodig het om te oorleef. Selfs al frustreer mense ons en ontken ons van tyd tot tyd hierdie ek-kan-nie-alleen-nie-konsep. Sonder lesers sou hierdie mylpaal nie vir my moontlik gewees het nie. Lesers wat terugvoering gee. Lesers wat vrae vra. Lesers wat voorstelle maak of versoeke rig. Agter elke rubriek skuil ’n stukkie inspirasie. ’n Stukkie emosie. ’n Stukkie ervaring. ’n Stukkie van myself of iemand wat my pad gekruis het. ’n Groot dankie aan lesers wat hierdie mylpaal vir my moontlik gemaak het. Die brein is ’n meester van herhaling. ’n Enkele verkeerde besluit kan eindeloos ’n marmotwiel in die gedagtes laat draai: “Hoe kon ek so onnosel wees? “Hoekom het ek nie meer gedink nie?” Wat in die innerlike omgaan, kan tot ’n swaar, uitputtende gevoel lei. Die gevoel van waardeloosheid wat baie

mense as ’n soort depressie beskryf. Ek probeer dit nie as ’n swakheid sien nie. Dit is miskien ’n natuurlike, hoewel oordrewe, reaksie op ’n bedreiging. Ek weet ek moet asemhaal en dink. Herken die verskil tussen ’n fout en identiteit. Jy hét ’n fout gemaak; jy ís nie die fout nie. Klink eenvoudig nè; nie maklik nie, maar dit kan verandering meebring. Vra: “Wat leer dit my?” in plaas van “Waarom is ek so sleg?” Jy is jou eie strengste kritikus. Jy sal mos ’n vriend waarskynlik help met ’n flater, nie beledig nie. Bied jouself dieselfde genade. Doen iets prakties om die probleem op te los. Maak kos, gaan stap. Gee jouself toestemming om aan te beweeg. Vra vergifnis. Groei is onmoontlik sonder foute. Foute plavei die pad na beter optrede. As die gemoed swaar bly, praat; vertel iemand daarvan. Selfs vir jou hond. Net om dit uit jou lyf te kry voordat dit in sepsis ontwikkel. Jy hoef dit nie alleen te dra nie.
