THE St Francis Bay Fire Station celebrated the completion of a comprehensive two-year renovation project on 26 August that has transformed the facility into a modern, fully-equipped emergency services hub
The project, spearheaded by the Rotary Club of St Francis Bay, represents what officials are calling a shining example of community collaboration among local government, businesses and organisations
Lesley de Jager, President of the Rotary Club of St Francis Bay, said that the project has been a true community effort She said that over the past two years, many hands and hearts have worked together to make this transformation pos-
sible
"We now stand at a fire station that is not only functional, but a proud symbol of what we can achieve when Rotary, local government, businesses and our community come together," said De Jager
The revamped facility received comprehensive upgrades, including repainting, retiling, replacement of all light fittings, creation of separate bathroom facilities for female staff, ceiling and roof repairs, new signage, waterproofing, installation of water tanks, landscaping, and new flood lighting systems
The project received significant financial backing from local businesses, Billy's Beach and DVG, with additional contributions from Rotarians Jef Forrer, who guided the project, and Stephan de Bruin, who oversaw the building work while making

a substantial personal contribution
Local contractors contributed to the project's success by offering services at community-friendly rates, including Adrian Thorn from Kouga, local architect Philip Janks, Dewald Gouws from Aluminium Purpose, Wendy Wills and Larry Wood from Buco, Henry Claassens and his team from 1st Class Cons, Arnold Whitehead from Nolans Plant Hire, Zurcher's Electrical and Hein Du Preez Plumbers
For Kouga Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, the occasion was more than just a ribbon-cutting ceremony; it was a return to his roots
As a learner at Nico Malan High School in Humansdorp, Bornman once worked night shifts at the very same fire station to earn pocket money
By morning, he would head to class still carrying the smell of smoke on his clothes, a badge of honour that spoke of long nights spent in service
"Those shifts were tough, but they shaped me," said Bornman "I learned the value of hard work, the importance of doing the small things right, and the discipline of neatness and order "
Bornman recalled how his journey began with a unique "interview" under the guidance of Dewald Barnard, Kouga Municipal Manager for Fire and Disaster Management, who was then the station commander
"He gave me two 25-litre containers and told me to run with them to the fence and back When I returned, he said, 'All right, you're fit, you get the job ' That was it I was hired Soon after, I was heading out at night to help put out fires I carry many good memories from those days," said Bornman
He said the lessons learned during those formative years have stayed with
him throughout his career, forming a solid foundation for the responsibilities he now carries as Mayor of Kouga Charl du Plessis, Kouga Municipality Municipal Manager, emphasised the importance of a fire station
He noted that the St Francis Bay Fire Station is one of the top-performing fire stations and expressed the municipality's commitment to ensuring all departments within the Kouga Municipality are considered the best in South Africa Barnard provided historical context for the renovation
He said that the fire station was built between 1987 and 1990 and handed over to the St Francis Fire Department on 5 October 1990
"Each section, which included an office, boardroom, sleeping quarters, bathrooms, kitchen and gym, had its own set of needs Thankfully, through the revamp, each area received special attention," said Barnard
Allister Brown, a firefighter who has been stationed at St Francis Bay since 2010, expressed gratitude for the improvements to what he called their "home away from home "
Brown also paid tribute to the late Tom Roux, a fellow Rotarian who originally presented the renovation concept to the club but passed away before seeing its completion
He said that Roux had a special place in his heart for the St Francis Fire Station and that they are thankful for his contributions
"With our newly revamped fire station, we will continue to serve and protect our community with pride," said Brown To honour Roux, a remembrance plaque, which De Jager describes as a "lasting tribute to his dedication and service" was unveiled
KOUGA Local Municipality is making significant progress on its combined R12 18 million projects to repair and restore key road, water and stormwater infrastructure damaged by recent floods Construction commenced on 14 July 2025 and is scheduled for completion by 28 February 2026
Repairs will be carried out across multiple sites in the Kouga region, including Ketse, Nanto, Meyer and Phillip Streets, as well as Mountain Road in Humansdorp; Sherley Street in Loerie; Da Gama Road in Jeffreys Bay and George Road and the Sea Vista access road in St Francis Bay
Work will include reinstating and upgrading stormwater systems, repairing road surfaces, strengthening embankments, and reconstructing low-level bridge crossings
Priority projects include the Phillip
Street low-level bridge crossing, which will be rebuilt to ensure safe access for motorists and pedestrians, and the Mountain Road stormwater culvert upgrade, designed to improve drainage and reduce flooding risks George Road will also see both water and stormwater infrastructure restored to pre-flood standards
“Thanks to the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant, we are now in a position to repair and rebuild the affected areas in a way that not only restores access but also increases resilience to future storm events,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman
“These repairs are vital for the safety, connectivity and well-being of our communities We are committed to restoring damaged infrastructure swiftly and ensuring that all work meets the highest engineering standards ”
GOING to high school can be a daunting and challenging experience where teenagers face many temptations and difficulties
Recognising these obstacles that learners encounter during this critical transition period, the Healthy Mom and Baby Clinic (HMBC) sought to create a programme specifically designed to address the challenges faced by grade 7 learners before they make the transition to high school
On 29 August, the HMBC launched the Mi Friday programme at Makukhanye Primary School in Pellsrus, with plans to expand their coverage throughout the Kouga region
This initiative aims to create a platform where HMBC can equip grade 7 learners through discussion groups with girls and boys, addressing topics such as identity, selfworth, and values before they begin their high school journey
The new initiative builds on the success of Female Friday, a project that began in 2019, focusing specifically on grade 7 female learners throughout the Kouga region
As previously reported, Female Friday was launched by Thandi Radebe (representing HMBC), Bernadette Swart (representing Oasis FM) and Sarah Darby (representing Journey Counselling Centre)
According to Radebe, a counsellor at HMBC, the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the region affects both genders, prompting the HMBC to expand its programme to include male learners
"It is important that boys also receive a similar message about preventing teenage pregnancy," said Radebe
To ensure effective communication with the male learners, Radebe approached Dennis Vooijs, whom she describes as having a "father's heart " Vooijs who has been part of the HMBC for
changes they can expect in their bodies We also ask them who they want to become and encourage them to make good choices," said Vooijs
He further said that he also addresses dating education, teaching about the importance of boundaries and respecting others' boundaries
Radebe explained that with the girls, they focus on respecting their bodies and themselves, making informed choices, exploring their future goals, and planning and preparing for life in high school and beyond
At the launch event, which targeted grade 7 learners, the HMBC reached 68 girls and 102 boys
Each learner received specially prepared care packages tailored to their needs
The girls' packs included sanitary products, bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, bra, lotion, and roll-on deodorant
To further assist underprivileged girls at the school, Radebe said that she provides the learners with sanitary products, either delivering supplies monthly or having learners visit the HMBC when needed
To ensure that each girl receives the correct bra size, she takes the extra step of visiting the school beforehand to measure each girl
The boys received packages containing an elastic band with the inspirational message,
"I am who God says I am," along with bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion and roll-on deodorant
"We also say a special prayer over each pack," said Radebe
The HMBC's commitment extends beyond the initial launch
Radebe said that future plans include expanding the programme to other schools in the region and implementing a mentorship programme titled "Undiluted," which will tackle larger topics such as sex education and sexually transmitted diseases
Radebe said that the programme specifically targets grade 7 learners to prepare them for
KOUGA Local Municipality recently completed major upgrades to two key substations – with a combined investment of R34 million – enhancing the electrical infrastructure to support both current and future development in Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp
Boskloof
The Boskloof Substation in Humansdorp was upgraded from 6 3MVA to 15MVA at a cost of R22 million, significantly improving the electrical supply in the area – equivalent to powering over 2,500 60-watt light bulbs This upgrade will, furthermore, accommodate new housing units planned under the KwaNomzamo housing project, part of the ten human settlement projects approved by the Department of Human Settlements in 2009, as well as additional future growth
OceanView
Enhancing the overall electricity supply in
the area, the Ocean View Substation in Jeffreys Bay was also expanded from 5 6MVA to 14MVA at a cost of R12 million, providing sufficient capacity to power 233,333 60-watt light bulbs The upgrade will, in addition, deliver electricity to the 1,500 planned units in the Ocean View housing project – also one of the ten human settlement projects approved by the Department of Human Settlements in 2009
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the upgrades are critical for the municipality’s growth and service delivery “These projects not only provide reliable electricity to our communities but also lay the foundation for sustainable development in Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay,” he said “Investing in our electricity infrastructure ensures that as our towns grow, residents and businesses can rely on a stable and efficient power supply, supporting both livelihoods and economic development ”

ON 25 August, the JobsConnectEC campaign was launched in Kouga, where close to 200 young people gathered at the Kruisfontein Civic Centre to be connected to opportunities
Dr Vicky Knoetze, Kouga Constituency Leader, said that of the 10 2 million unemployed people in South Africa, 4 6 million are young people between the ages of 15 and 34
"South Africa's youth face a crisis Almost half of school leavers with a matric certificate are unemployed, while one in four university graduates cannot find work," said Knoetze
"Behind every statistic is a young life on hold and a family under pressure " Knoetze said that at the launch of the
JobsConnectEC, job seekers received CV support, interview coaching, life skills training, and connections to employers and training providers
Kouga Municipality also launched a permanent free Wi-Fi hotspot at the Civic Centre, giving young people the tools to apply for jobs, study online, and access training opportunities
On his Facebook page, Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said that they launched the free Wi-Fi hotspot as part of their ongoing rollout plan to expand internet access across Kouga
"This space will help residents apply for jobs, study, and unlock opportunities online," said Bornman
"Together, we are building pathways
to opportunity, skills and hope for our youth "
Knoetze said that JobsConnectEC is not just about emergency relief; it is about fixing the system that leaves young people behind
She said that through the initiative, they want to close the school-to-work gap by aligning education and skills training with market needs, implementing a proper transition curriculum that prepares school-leavers for employment, and boosting private sector incentives for hiring first-time job seekers while deepening partnerships with businesses
Knoetze further said that they want to support youth entrepreneurship by cutting red tape, driving a whole-of-society

IT takes a village to raise a child It takes a community to raise funds
Stulting Primary School and Dirk Ellis Volkswagen have embarked on an exciting fundraising journey to restore the school’s Volkswagen Kombi to its full glory through a crowdfunding campaign
This VW Kombi was ‘born’ in 1976, and just a year later, it found its new home at Stulting Primary School in Humansdorp
The Kombi was purchased for R4,000 from Jo de La Mot Motors – the then Volkswagen dealer in Humansdorp
Stulting School Principal, Cornelius Coetzer, explained the legacy of their ‘people mover’: “The Kombi has been in the service of teachers and learners of Stulting Primary School since 1977, and for five decades, the Kombi has transported generations of children and created everlasting memories ”
Coetzer elaborated, “But time has taken its toll, and our beloved Kombi needs tender loving care With its 50th birthday around the corner, it’s time to give it new life ”
Last year, Coetzer approached Dirk Ellis Volkswagen about the possibility of sponsorship to restore the bus, and this compelling collaboration was tabled Dirk Ellis Volkswagen Marketing Manager, Werner van Wyk, stated: “With the legendary Kombi being a part of the school and the community for so many years, the thought was to get the community involved to assist in raising the funds needed After all, Volkswagen is the people’s car ”
Although the project was idle for nearly a year, the ‘BackaBussie’ campaign is now in full motion – just in time for the icon’s upcoming 50th birthday milestone Van Wyk further commented: “This collective effort will not only raise the
