AN inspector from Humansdorp

SPCA Assisi was assaulted while carrying out her duties during an investigation into alleged animal crueltyand neglect in Kareedouw, prompting the organisation to open acase of common assault.

The incident occurred after the SPCA received acomplaint about animals being kept in poorconditionsatalocal premises

According to SPCA inspector, Marisa Kruger, concerns included dogs beingchained on veryshort chains, inadequate shelter,and limited access to clean water.

She also alleged that the owner admitted to using the dogs for hunting and that he killed animals that entered his property

Kruger said that while she was at-

tending to the complaint, thesituation escalated unexpectedly despite her initially introducing herself and remaining calm.

Afterissuing awarning to the owner,she attempted to place the notice on the door whenthe situation turned violent.

The ownerallegedly grabbed her byher shirt and pushed her forcefully in the chest.

“I do nothaveany injuries. My chest wasabit painful for two days, but that'sit,” said Kruger.

Afieldofficer intervened to prevent further harm, while members of ARKAnimal Rescue, an animal rescue organisation in Kareedouw, whowere present at thescene,assisted immediately.

douwPolice Station

Shesaid that while theincident was unsettling, her focus remains on her work.

“The day it happened, Ifeltshaky and fragile, butI'm doing well. We are extremelybusyattendingtoanimal cruelty andneglect matters, so Idon't have timetofocus on what happened,”said Kruger.

Sheaddedthatsuch encounters are not uncommon for inspectors

“We deal with hostility and threats very often, almostweekly. WhileI havenot been previously assaulted in this manner, it doeshappen to inspectors with increasing frequency,” said Kruger.

Shesaid that inspectors often operateinchallengingenvironments, particularly in rural areas,but incidentsare not limitedtothoseregions.

Rather,they encounter hostility in

other neighbourhoodsaswell, even in affluent areas.

“Some areas or houses we can't enteralone, and we need lawenforcement, securityorpolice backup,” said Kruger.

Despite therisks, Kruger remains committed to her role.

“I am doing what Idofor theanimals, and Iwill stand strong for them no matterwhat.They don't havevoices, so Iwill remain determined to enforce theAnimals Protection Act to helpthem,” said Kruger.

Further elaborating on therole of inspectors, she said that they act as lawenforcement officers tasked with preventing animal cruelty and neglect,including investigating cases,conducting inspections, rescuing animalsindistress, and layingcriminal charges where necessary.

Misgund receives R15million BulkWater Project

AS part of the celebrationofWorld WaterDay 2026,on22March, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) handed over the Misgund Bulk WaterScheme Project to Koukamma Local Municipality.

The project, funded through the DWS's Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) to the tune of R15million and implemented by its entity, Amatola Water, as the Implementing Agent, will benefit 404 households with an estimated population of 2,020 and address water shortages in Misgund

Misgundislocated approximately 203 km west of Gqeberha in theSarah Baartman District, and its main revenuebase is the soft fruitindustry (apples, pearsand peaches), especially for the export market.

Like many towns in the Koukamma Municipality, the area is largely dependent on boreholes and water from the Misgund Irrigation Damfor supply to the 404householdsinthe locality

Theborehole water was supplied withoutundergoing any treatment, which was aconcern as waterqual-

itytests revealed elevated (unacceptably high) concentrations of iron(Fe) and manganese (Mn)inthe groundwater.

The borehole water yield also did notmeet thedemandfor the community.

As such,the DWSapproved plans for aproject todrill and equiptwo additional boreholes, construction of 400 kilolitresper day(kl/d) water treatment works, 300 kl raw water and30klbalancing reservoirs, and the installation of a2.3 km bulk water supply rising mainline to convey waterfrom the Misgund Dam to the watertreatment works.

The handover of the projecton World WaterDay is significant as it responds to the global call forequitable accesstowaterfor all.

Police spokesperson Captain Majola Nkohli confirmed that they are investigating acase of common assault, following an incident between an SPCAemployeeand aresident on 16 March in Kareedouw.

“It is alleged that at about 12:20, theSPCA official wasresponding to acomplaint of animal cruelty at ahouse in New Rest, Kareedouw,” said Nkohli.

“It is said that thehomeowner became aggressive and pushed the official.”

Nkohli said that thevictim opened acase of common assault. However, he said that no arrests havebeen made at this stage.

THE Reel Ubuntu Film Festival has marked asignificant milestone for youngcreatives in the Kougaregion, providingaplatform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talent and storytelling abilities.

Organised by Galaxy Castings, the festival forms part of the Birthing Tomorrow’s Storytellers (BTS)initiative, athree-day youth film bootcamp aimed at equipping young people with skills in acting,directing andscriptwriting.

The programme resulted in learners from local schools producingtheir own short films, which were screened during the festival on 20 March at King’s College in Jeffreys Bay

Assistant Producer of Galaxy Casting, Marshall Geswint, saidthat the event broughttogether learners, educators, industry professionals and community members,highlighting the creativity and potential of young storytellers from local schools.

Participating film crews included Bosbok Produksies from PaulSauer High School in Kareedouw, For All Films fromRainbow Skills Centre in Humansdorp, and Buzzing Productions from Hankey SeniorSecondary School

Additional film crewsincluded Buzzing Productions from Humansdorp Secondary School and RegalKings Films fromKing’sCollege.

Geswint said that the festival has

had ameaningful impact on young people andthe broader community.

“This event created greatvisionand inspireddreams in afresh way. It also highlightedthe fact that film production can no longer be overlooked and treated as something not important anymore,” said Geswint.

Theprogramme also featured guest speakers, includingKougaMunicipalityCouncillor Shena Ruth, Willem Oosthuizenfrom SSK, awell-known agricultural business, and Simon Pienaar, DeanofAFDA,who encouraged learners to pursue their creative ambitions

ANON-PROFIT organisation based in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp, is working tirelessly to raise awareness about substance abuse and guide young people towards healthier futures

TADA, establishedin2022, focuses on supporting schoolchildren and youth in the community by educating them about the dangers of drug use and offering guidance on how to seek help.

The NPO currently operates in four areas: Humansdorp, Hankey,Joubertina and Kirkwood Humansdorp-basedTADAmember, Maryka Windvogel, saidthat the organisationaims to ensure thatresidents know wheretoturn whentheyortheir loved ones needsupport.

She said that through school visits and community outreach programmes,TADA engagesdirectly with young people, encouraging open conversations about substance abuse and its impact.

Windvogel said that the organisation also conducts door-to-door awarenesscampaigns, speakingtoboth children and parentsabout the realitiesof addiction and the importance of earlyintervention.

She further said that the challenges faced in the community aresignificant, with substance abuse affecting both young people and adults.

“A lot of young people are using drugs, and sadly, they will neverjuststopusing drugsuntil something happens or someone gets hurt because of drugs.They listen when Italk to them and explain what it can do to their body, butwhen Ileave, they will start using again, and even throw away the pamphletI give them,”

said Windvogel.

Despite thesedifficulties, she said that working with learners at schools offers hope.

“When Igotothe school, Ilovehow they communicate back to me, and some of them come to me after the programme and askwhat they can do to stop because they fear theirfriends. Some of the problems start at home, and after that, Iwill go door todoor to talk to the parents,” said Windvogel.

While TADA receives some funding from the Department of Social Development, she said that moresupportisneeded to expand its reach and assist moreyoung people, especially those at local schools.

Windvogel noted that while the journey is not easy, thereare signs of progress.

“The children'sparents keep in touch with me, and Ican see they aretrying their best to stop using substances and make a difference in theirlives,” saidWindvogel.

She emphasised that substance abuse in the community extends beyond illegaldrugsand includes alcohol and other harmful substances.

“Most of the teenagersinmycommunity areusingsubstances, and it is not only teenagers butadults as well. They use drugs butalso misuse alcohol, painkillers andGrandpa,” said Windvogel.

Despitethe ongoing challenges, TADA remains committed to uplifting young people and helping them realise their potential.

“The young peopleinour community have alot of talent that they arewasting by using all these kinds of substances. We want tomake our community abetter place for them,” said Windvogel.

THE Impact Centre soup kitchen in Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay,isexpandingits reach as more residents turn to the initiativefor daily meals, highlighting the growingneedinthe community.

Originally launched by Impact Churchin June2025 as atwice-weekly effort to combat hunger, the project has since seena significant increase in the number of people seeking assistance

What began witharound250 beneficiaries on its first day has now grown to hundreds more at each serving.

Pastor Alfred Jongile, directorofImpactCentre, said the expansion reflects the harsh realitiesfacedbymany in the area

“Because people of this area struggle in terms of povertyand chronic illness and disease, as a church, our heart is to see everyone sleep with afull stomach,”saidJongile.

At arecent launch of the expanded initiative, the response fromthe community exceeded expectations

“We had 500 people on the first day. We did not have enoughfood,but God did amiracle, and all stomachs were fed, and everyone received food,” said Jongile.

Thesoup kitchen, which previously operated twice aweek, now runs on Tuesdays, Wednes-

days and Thursdays, with hopesofextending services even further to include Monday as well.

Jongile said that the initiative is supported by asmall but dedicated team of sixvolunteers who help prepare and distribute meals to those in need

Sinceits inception, he said that the soup kitchen has continued to operate from the Ocean View Taxi Rank parking area opposite the USave, providing meals to both children and adults.

“Aspartofour commitment, we want to make an impact in the lives of the underprivileged, ”saidJongile.

ENVIRONMENTAL management in the Kouga region isakey focus forthe localmunicipality, withongoing efforts aimed at promoting cleanerand more sustainable communities.

Oneofthe officials contributing to this work is Yonela Mlindazwe, who serves as aWaste Minimisation and Education Officer at Kouga Local Municipality. Her journey fromintern to apermanentrole reflects her growing involvement in environmental programmes andcommunity-focused initiatives.

Mlindazwe began her municipal career in 2023asanEnvironmental Management Intern, steppinginto aworld of water quality monitoring, biodiversity protection, waste management, andenvironmentalcompliance.

“I was fortunate to growwithin the departmentand ultimately secure apermanent position. It hasbeen ajourney of perseverance, learning,and commitment to serving ourcommunity,”saidMlindazwe.

Balancingstrategyandaction

Her daily workblends planning with on-the groundengagement. She collaborates with waste management and environmentalhealth teams, visits communities to identify challenges, and designs education programmesthat bring residents, businesses, and schoolsinto a sharedvision.

“My daily routine is amix of strategic planning and on-site action. It’sabout ensuringeveryone is aligned with our green goals —Keep KougaClean &Green,” said Mlindazwe.

Confrontingillegaldumping

Illegal dumping remains oneofKouga’smost pressing environmental challenges.Mlindazwe believes the solution lies not only in enforcement but also in community participation

“I am afirm believer thatcommunity engagement is the cornerstone of effective waste management. Our success depends on cultivating active communities where every resident feels asense of ownership,” said Mlindazwe.

She advocates forcollaboration with ward councillors, street watch groups, and the proper use of municipal infrastructure, such as wheelie bins, skip bins, and recycling drop-off sites. “The municipality provides the essential infrastructure, but the system only functions when we all participate,”saidMlindazwe.

Educationasatoolfortransformation

Shesees education as the mostpowerful pathwaytosustainable change. Her programmes focus on waste separation at source, recycling awareness, and practical workshops

“We plan to educate residents through a clear,consistent, and community-centred approach that combines simple guidelines,

hands-on workshops, school programmes,and social mediacampaigns,”said Mlindazwe.

Sheisparticularly passionate about youth involvement. “When achild learns thevalue of aplastic bottle at school, they ensure their parentsdon’t throwitinthe general bin.”

Hervisionincludesyouth-led environmental champions who use technology and social mediatomonitor illegal dumping and hold communities accountable.

“My motivation stems from the belief that aclean environment is the foundation of human dignity. When Isee acommunity reclaim aspace from illegal dumping and turn it into asafe playground or agarden, it reminds me that my work isn’tjust about waste; it’s about restoringpride.”

Sy ouers, Ruiter en Jacky,tesame met sy broers, Jamian en Curtley, is uiters trots op sy prestasies. Sy oom, Jacobus Jantjes, is ook besonder trots op Damian. Jantjes was destyds die een wat hom in Kaapstad vergesel het tydens sy paspoort- en visumaansoek –’nvroeë stap op padna sy internasionale droom.

“Damian se storie is nie net een vantalent nie, maar ook vanvasbyt en geloof –’ninspirasie vir jong spelers vanklein dorpe soos Kareedouw wat groot drome koester,” het Jantjes gesê.

Damian het ook sy opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor sy ouers, sy breë familie en die Kareedouw-gemeenskap vir hul volgehoue ondersteuning en aanmoediging deur sy loopbaan.
