The 2026 Rhino Night Relay raised R30,195 for the Kouga Rhino Sanctuary, making it the biggest year yet for the annual rhino conservation fundraiser. Farmers raise ﬂood,FMD concerns with Agriculture Minister KOUGA farmers affected by the May floods and the ongoing footand-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak raised concerns directly with the Agriculture Minister, Willie Aucamp, during his visit to Humansdorp and Patensie on 18 September. The visit, hosted by the Kouga Local Municipality, focused on the impact of the severe May weather and flooding on farmers in the area, as well as the national response to the FMD outbreak. Aucamp engaged with farmers and local stakeholders on the challenges facing the agricultural sector, while Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, welcomed the opportunity for farmers to engage directly with national government. According to a statement by the municipality, Bornman highlighted the vital contribution made by farmers to the local and regional economy, noting that agriculture was not only about production, but also about sustaining livelihoods, creating employment and contributing to the broader economic wellbeing of communities. “Farmers play a key role in growing our economy. We want to thank all our farmers for the work they do, and for their continued contribution to the Kouga economy,” said Bornman. He welcomed the opportunity for the municipality to host the minister and for farmers to raise their concerns directly with the national Department of Agriculture. “We appreciate the minister taking the time to come to Kouga, to listen to our farmers and to see

Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp. first-hand some of the challenges they are facing,” said Bornman. The visit provided an opportunity to assess the damage caused by the severe weather experienced in May and to discuss the support required by affected farmers as they worked towards recovery and the new production season. According to the statement, more than 10% of the citrus crop in the Gamtoos Valley was damaged in May after the Gamtoos River burst its banks. The statement indicated that the Kouga area had subsequently been classified as part of the disaster following the severe weather and flooding. The distinction between a disaster classification and a dec-

laration of a state of disaster was highlighted during the engagement. The statement said a classification formally recognises that a disaster exists and establishes responsibility for coordinating and managing the response. It does not, however, amount to a declaration of a state of disaster. Under South Africa’s disaster-management framework, a declaration can activate extraordinary measures and may facilitate the mobilisation of additional resources, including funding, where required. The statement said Aucamp also indicated that he had met with the Eastern Cape Department of

Agriculture to discuss the provincial assessment of the flood impact. He undertook to engage with the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, on the matter, with a view to having the situation in the affected area considered for a declaration of a state of disaster, rather than remaining only under disaster classification. The statement said this was intended to strengthen the support mechanisms available to affected communities and farmers as they continued with recovery efforts. Part of the engagements focused on the national foot-andmouth disease outbreak. Aucamp gave farmers and stakeholders an update on the government’s response to the FMD outbreak and discussed measures being taken to manage and curb the spread of the disease. He emphasised that the government could not manage the outbreak on its own.

“With regard to FMD, we have to work together. This is the largest outbreak of FMD ever. We learn as we go along and find solutions together,” said Aucamp. The statement said South Africa’s FMD outbreak had been classified as a national disaster in February 2026, with the national response involving coordination across government and engagement with affected stakeholders. Aucamp encouraged farmers to vaccinate their cattle as part of measures to protect herds and assist in managing the spread of the disease. “Vaccines are insurance for your herds. The government will keep on vaccinating where there are new outbreaks and help where it is not affordable for some farmers” said Aucamp. The minister reiterated that managing FMD required cooperation between government, farmers, industry and other stakeholders: “We are in it together.”

Rhino Night Relay raises record R30,195 for rhinos RAZAAN PLAATJIES THE 2026 Rhino Night Relay has raised R30,195 for the Kouga Rhino Sanctuary, marking the biggest year yet for the annual rhino conservation fundraiser. The event, held at the Algoa Kart and Motorcycle Club in Gqeberha on 5 September, attracted 81 entries across the Calf, Amateur and Night Relay categories. Founded in 2018 by Gwen and Timothy Young, the non-profit event was created out of a passion for rhino conservation and enduro riding. Over the years, the event has brought together off-road motorcycle riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, with funds raised through rider entries, raffles and

donations going towards rhino conservation organisations. According to Gwen, the 2026 event not only surpassed the 2025 fundraiser but also became the biggest Rhino Night Relay since it started nine years ago. “2026, you absolutely blew us away,” said Gwen. “We are incredibly proud to announce that the 2026 Rhino Night Relay raised R30,195 for Kouga Rhino Sanctuary.” The event has supported several rhino conservation organisations since its inception, including Saving The Survivors, Kragga Kamma Game Park, The Rhino Orphanage, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary and The Rhino Revolution. In 2025, the event donated more

than R29,350 to The Rhino Revolution, following a donation of R26,050 in 2024. Gwen said the 2026 event was supported by 71 sponsors, with The Turbo Shop serving as the title sponsor. She thanked the sponsors for their contributions, which included money, prizes, products, services, equipment and time. “To every single one of our 71 sponsors, whether you donated money, prizes, products, services, equipment, time, or simply said, ‘How can we help?’ thank you,” said Gwen. “This event would simply not be possible without you.” Gwen also thanked the event team, volunteers, marshals, photographers, lap scorers, MC and other helpers who assisted with setting

up, running and packing up the event. The event catered for riders of different ages and experience levels, with the Calf category for younger riders, the Amateur category during the day and the Night Relay for teams riding after dark. Gwen also thanked all 81 entrants for taking part. “To our riders, from our little Calf riders to our Amateur riders and every Night Relay team who lined up in the dark, thank you for showing up, getting on your bikes and supporting something so much bigger than all of us,” said Gwen. The Rhino Night Relay began in 2018, when approximately 80 riders participated despite freezing temperatures and heavy rain. The inaugural event raised just

over R10,000 for Saving The Survivors. Since then, the event has continued to raise funds for different rhino conservation organisations, with donations increasing as more riders, sponsors and supporters joined the cause. Gwen said reaching the ninth year of the event with continued support was something she and Timothy would not take for granted. “To be standing here nine years strong, surrounded by people who continue to show up for us, for this event and, most importantly, for our rhinos, is something we will never, ever take for granted,” said Gwen. “Nine years down, our biggest and best one yet. Until next time, because knowing us, there’s always a next time.”

More than 1,000 archers to take aim in Jeffreys Bay MORE than 1,000 archers from across South Africa, accompanied by their families, coaches and supporters, will descend on Jeffreys Bay this spring when Africa Genesis Archery (AGA) South Africa hosts its 2026 National Championship from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The championship will be hosted at the four-star Mentors Country Estate just outside Jeffreys Bay, with total visitor numbers expected to reach approximately 2,500 over the course of the event. The championship is being presented with the support of Kouga Local Municipality as the main sponsor, helping bring one of the country’s largest archery events to the Eastern Cape. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the municipality was proud to support an event of this magnitude and to showcase Kouga as a destination capable of hosting

major national sporting events. “We are delighted to welcome AGA South Africa and thousands of archers, families and supporters to Kouga. Events such as this provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our beautiful region while contributing directly to the local economy,” said Bornman. Archers from every province will compete across three national championships during the week. The National Inter-Provincial Championship (NIPC) will see provincial teams competing head-tohead for national honours, while the National Adult Archery Group Championship (NAAGC) will showcase some of South Africa’s leading senior archers across various bow categories. The National Interschool & Club Championship (NISCC) will bring a vibrant family atmosphere to the event, with school teams and club ar-

chers of all ages taking centre stage. Opening parades, official ceremonies, a gala evening and prizegivings will form part of the programme, ensuring that the championship offers an experience for participants and spectators alike. Bornman said the event also provided an opportunity to inspire young people through sport. “Hosting a national championship of this scale in Jeffreys Bay gives our local community, particularly young people, an opportunity to experience a sport that they may not otherwise encounter. We hope that the event will inspire more children and young people to participate in archery and other sporting activities,” he said. Spectators are welcome, and families and community members are encouraged to attend and cheer on the archers as they compete for national honours.

Parking upgrade completed at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach KOUGA Local Municipality has completed a parking upgrade at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach, providing a more durable and organised parking area for residents, visitors and businesses. The project, completed at a cost of R1,749,552.50, involved the supply and installation of 80mm paving in the Jeffreys Bay Central Business District (CBD). Located at the Main Beach, the upgraded area provides improved parking and access to one of Jeffreys Bay's most popular recreational and

tourism precincts, as well as surrounding restaurants, shops and the Jeffreys Bay Water Park. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the project represents an important investment in local infrastructure and the overall visitor experience. “Jeffreys Bay is one of Kouga’s key tourism destinations, and ensuring that our public infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of residents, businesses and visitors is essential. “This project has transformed a previously unsurfaced parking area into

a more durable and organised paved space. It improves access to the Main Beach while also supporting the businesses and attractions in the surrounding CBD.” Bornman said investment in parking infrastructure was particularly important in a coastal tourism town such as Jeffreys Bay, where visitor numbers increase significantly during peak holiday periods and major events. “Good parking infrastructure is an important part of the overall visitor experience. Additional parking bays have been provided to help address demand generated by the Main Beach, surrounding businesses and tourism facilities. The improved parking layout creates a more orderly environment for motorists and pedestrians. The parking upgrade forms part of the municipality's broader efforts to improve the functionality, accessi-

bility and safety of the Jeffreys Bay CBD. These improvements include the widening of sidewalks in selected areas to create additional pedestrian space, and the introduction of raised intersections at key locations to encourage lower vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian safety. “This investment not only benefits our residents but also supports local businesses and tourism. Kouga community rallies behind children with cancer THE Kouga community will once again rally behind children with cancer when National Cupcake Day returns to Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay on 26 September. For children with cancer, getting to treatment can mean hours on the road, weeks in hospital and months away from home. For families walking that journey, practical support from people they have never met can make all the difference. That is what National Cupcake Day is all about. On 26 September, thousands of South Africans will once again become ‘Cupcake Angels’ by baking and sharing cupcakes to help children with cancer and their families. National Cupcake Day will be celebrated at more than 80 shopping centres across the country, with schools, workplaces and communities also joining the movement. Since 2012, Cupcakes of Hope has

provided practical, emotional and financial support to families navigating childhood cancer. Last year alone, the organisation supported more than 140 children every month, approved almost 2,000 requests for financial assistance and delivered 3,766 Hospital Care Bags to children in all 21 paediatric oncology wards across South Africa. Sandy Cipriano, founder of Cupcakes of Hope, said, “When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes instantly for the whole family. “Parents suddenly find themselves travelling long distances for treatment, taking time away from work and facing expenses they never expected. We can’t take away a child’s diagnosis, but we can help ease some of the practical, emotional and financial pressures so families can focus on what matters most, their child. Every Cupcake Angel helps make that possible.” General practitioner, childhood

cancer survivor and Cupcakes of Hope patron, Dr Natasché Daniels, said practical support is an essential part of treatment. “Cancer affects the whole family. When some of the practical pressures are lifted, parents can focus on supporting their child through treatment. Becoming a Cupcake Angel is a simple but meaningful way for South Africans to remind families they do not have to face childhood cancer alone,” said Daniels. Last year, more than 2,400 Cupcake Angels helped raise over R2 million to support children with cancer and their families. This year, Cupcakes of Hope hopes to welcome even more volunteer bakers as the need continues to grow. Jeffreys Bay is one of the original malls that has hosted this event since the beginning. Coordinator Janelle Stokker tells how she got involved. “I lost my father to cancer, so I

know firsthand what families go through. When I then saw a post on Facebook advertising for people to get involved, I decided that, as a baker, this is something I can get involved with. “The goal that year was that we had to have a minimum of 500 cupcakes pledged for the event. Within two weeks, I had close to 700 pledges, and we have just gone from strength to strength. I have bakers and volunteers from across the Kouga region pledging their time and love for this event. Last year we had close to 1,200 cupcakes available on the day, and this year it is no different. She added, “It is heartwarming to see how our community rallies together to help those in need, from schools holding baking and decorating events with their learners, staff and parents; businesses donating ingredients and folk arriving on the day with their cupcakes. The support from the public is amazing;

we cannot unpack the cupcakes fast enough, with many already waiting for us at opening time, eager to see what we have this year. We always have a wide variety of flavours available, and each cupcake is beautifully decorated.” Stokker said the Cupcake Angel stall will be located in the Mr Price Home passage at Fountains Mall from 09:00 until the last cupcake has found a new home. She said they are looking forward to meeting all those who visit their table on 26 September. A DAY IN THE LIFE: SIPHO KAMTE

A career he never planned,a calling he embraced Long before most of the community begins its day, there is already a rhythm of planning, problem-solving and service behind the scenes at Kouga Local Municipality. For Sipho “Ivan” Kamte, almost 21 years in municipal service have taught him that a job is not simply about getting through a list of tasks – it is about people, dignity and leaving a positive mark on the community. FOR Sipho Kamte, better known as Ivan, working for the Kouga Local Municipality is about more than completing a daily task list. It is about people, service, responsibility and making a difference in his community. A father of three and a born-again Christian, Kamte joined the municipality in September 2005 after the birth of his first child. He had prayed for an opportunity and applied for a general worker position but was appointed as a machine operator. Almost 21 years later, he has grown into a supervisory role, overseeing parks and cemetery-related responsibilities in Humansdorp and St Francis Bay. Interestingly, municipal work was not what Kamte originally dreamed of. “My dream job was to be a doctor,” he says. Today, his role is very different, but his desire to help people remains at the heart of what he does. Starting the day Kamte’s working day begins with communication and planning. “When I arrive at work, I start by gathering everyone – the employees and their supervisors – together, and we discuss our weekly tasks,” he explains. He then checks his emails for urgent matters, attends meetings and deals with issues requiring his attention. In the afternoon, he checks in with supervisors to see how work is progressing. Planning is particularly important for cemetery services. Kamte and his team prepare schedules for the following day, ensuring that everyone knows what needs to be done. His responsibilities include making sure operations are under control and that cemeteries remain clean and properly maintained. The work behind the scenes One of the challenges Kamte and his team face is identifying old cemeteries where records are no longer available. Maintaining these spaces can also be difficult when there are damaged fences, livestock entering cemetery grounds, vandalism and drug-related activities that result in graves being damaged. For Kamte, cemeteries deserve the

same care and respect as any important community space. Weather can also create challenges. Burying a loved one during heavy rain is particularly difficult because wet conditions can damage graves and cause the soil to sink. Kamte would also like residents to better understand the sensitive circumstances surrounding the reopening of graves where there is insufficient depth for a new burial. These situations require careful consideration and understanding from families. He believes graves should be properly maintained and filled evenly so families can continue visiting their loved ones in a clean and dignified environment.

he makes a difference to both the community and his co-workers. He enjoys helping and motivating employees, resolving complaints and meeting new people. He also values learning about different people and cultures. One of his most rewarding moments is receiving acknowledgement from his superiors when work has been completed successfully.

Lessons from the job After years in public service, Kamte says he has learned that everyone is different and deserves respect. “Always treat people the way you want to be treated with respect. Every opinion matters.” His work has also changed how he views family and life. He believes people should take care of their families and spend time with them while they are alive.

Kamte’s advice His advice to colleagues and anyone entering the workplace is simple: “Treat every workplace as your own business. Respect your co-workers and superiors. Always be a positive person. Ask questions, give your best and respect your work.” He encourages people to remain willing to learn, ask for help, and embrace new opportunities. His message to residents is equally clear: let us work together to keep our cemeteries clean and ensure our loved ones have a peaceful and dignified resting place.

Beyond the workplace Away from work, Kamte enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family. Those who know him may describe him as straightforward, kind and honest. His faith is also an important part of his life and influences his outlook and approach to others.

St Francis Sharks host rugby clinic with former Springbok THE St Francis Sharks Rugby Club recently had the privilege of hosting a special two-day rugby clinic on 18 and 19 September, with the LM13 Foundation and former Springbok, Lionel Mapoe. The clinic gave young rugby players in the community an opportunity to learn from someone with experience at the highest level of the game. According to Coach Petrus (Joppie) Vena, the clinic was about more than rugby skills. He said it provided the youngsters with an opportunity to learn about discipline, commitment, teamwork and the values that come with being part of the sport. Vena said the Sharks’ older players also benefited from the experience, gaining valuable knowledge and insight from Mapoe and his team. Mapoe also visited Sea Vista Primary School, where he shared inspiring words with the learners. “His message reached all the learners, including those who do not play rugby, encouraging them to believe in themselves and pursue their goals,” said Vena. Fitness Coach Edward Felix said that, for the Sharks management team, one of the most meaningful signs of the clinic’s impact came after the two-day clinic had ended. “The youngsters were still out in the streets playing rugby, talking amongst themselves about the clinic and sharing their experiences with one another,” said Felix. He said that, for the Sharks, seeing the children continue playing and talking about what they had learned demonstrated just how much the experience had made an impression on them. The St Francis Sharks management expressed its appreciation to the LM13 Foundation and Lionel Mapoe for giving their time, knowledge and energy to the young players of St Francis Bay. They also acknowledged the involvement of Kouga Municipality and the Kouga Rugby Sub-Union. “You did not simply come here to teach rugby; you inspired our players and created memories that they will carry with them,” said Felix. “The St Francis Sharks hope that the visit will be the beginning of a lasting relationship and further opportunities for young people in the community.”

Kruisfontein United crowned Grand Challenge champions FROM the dusty streets of Humansdorp to the biggest stage in Eastern Province club rugby, Humansdorp’s Kruisfontein United Rugby Club are the 2026 Score Grand Challenge champions. Carren Leander, media and communications representative for Kruisfontein United, said that 19 September will forever hold a special place in the history of the “Purple Family”, as Kruisfontein United’s First Team lifted the coveted Score Grand Challenge trophy at Madibaz Stadium in Gqeberha. This achievement, however, was about far more than one final. Leander said Kruisfontein United entered the day with all three senior teams competing in their respective finals, a remarkable achievement for a community rugby club and a reflection of the depth, commitment and growth within the club. She said the Second Team and defending champion, First Reserve Team, did not get the results they had hoped for in their finals, but simply reaching the final stage was an achievement of which the club is immensely proud. Then came the final dance.

Leander said the First Team faced PE Harlequins with the hopes of an entire community behind them. “After months of hard work, sacrifices, injuries, victories and challenges, Kruisfontein United completed their journey by being crowned 2026 Score Grand Challenge champions after winning 29-27 against PE Harlequins,” said Leander. She said the victory adds another chapter to a club that was established in January 1992 through the amalgamation of four rugby clubs from the Humansdorp community. “For Kruisfontein, rugby has always represented more than what happens between the four white lines. It represents community, brotherhood, opportunity and pride,” said Leander. She said this championship belongs to every player who pulled on the purple jersey, every coach who sacrificed hours preparing their teams, the management and executive members working behind the scenes, the sponsors and partners who continued believing in the club, and the supporters who followed the team week after week.

“Most importantly, the championship belongs to the people of Kruisfontein and Humansdorp,” said Leander. “The Purple Family stood behind their teams throughout the season, and on finals day, their presence and voices once again reminded the players exactly who they were representing.” Captain Solomon Manxodidi said this win was special. He said that last year they fell short because he believed their preparation was not good enough, but this year the players worked hard. “The players showed more maturity this season. They were ready for this game,” said Manxodidi. Leander said the championship also carried deep emotion following the passing of Shane “Socks” van Vuuren, a member of the Purple Family who was laid to rest on the same day. “Kruisfontein United players had the honour of carrying his purple coffin before later taking the field and becoming champions,” said Leander. “It was a day of tremendous sadness and tremendous pride, one that the club and community will not easily forget.” Leander said Kruisfontein United extends its sincere appreciation to its coaches, players, executive committee, management, medical and support staff, media team, sponsors, families and every supporter who contributed to the 2026 campaign. Lumar Karolse (14) and Junique Windvogel (13) are the first primary school athletes from Kouga to represent South Africa in an Olympic sport at U/17 level. They are also the youngest athletes in the South African U/17 team. It is a story that starts not in a high-performance centre, but in a township gym with second-hand school shoes. Lumar makes history in two years Lumar Karolse, who competes in the U/55kg category, started weightlifting only two years ago. At the end of his first year as a weightlifter, Lumar became the first Black male to win the Champion of Champions Award for Eastern Cape Weightlifting. This year, in only his second year in the sport, he retained his title and lifted the qualification total required to represent his country. From beginner to national colours in 24 months. Junique becomes champion of

champions at 13 Junique Windvogel, who competes in the U/49kg category, turned 13 on 19 September this year. Last year, when she travelled to Gqeberha for the Eastern Cape Weightlifting Championships, it was the first time she had ever been to the city. Next month, she will board a plane to Algeria. At 13, Junique has become one of the youngest athletes in South Africa in the Olympic sport of weightlifting to be selected to represent her country at U/17 level, and most likely the youngest female athlete in Kouga sports history to wear the Green and Gold. This year she was crowned both SA U/14 and SA U/17 Champion of Champions trophy winner, beating girls four years older than her. More than medals For their coach at Pellsrus Weightlifting Club, Pieter Pretorius, the fact that the two are by far the youngest in the South African U/17 team highlights their exceptional talent. But the real victory is what they represent back home. In a township where children often have to choose between sport and survival, Lumar and Junique are proof that the Olympic dream is not reserved for private schools and big cities.
