Emergency teams battle Kouga fires RAZAAN PLAATJIES
RECENT widespread wildfires across Kouga Municipality prompted a coordinated emergency response involving municipal firefighting teams, SPCA Humansdorp wildlife rescue operations, and South African Police Services investigation after firefighters discovered a decomposed body during containment efforts in the affected areas. In a press release shared on 12 January, Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman provided an overview of the fires. He said that in early January 2026, Kouga Local Municipality experienced widespread wildfires that posed significant threats to residential areas, farms, and infrastructure. The fires were exacerbated by dry conditions, strong winds, and difficult terrain, requiring a coordinated response from municipal, district municipality, and humanitarian resources. Bornman said that on 8 January, the first major flare-ups were reported in the Zwartenbosch and St Francis Bay (Oyster Bay Road) areas, and residents were urged to evacuate. The following day, on 9 January, the fires spread towards St Francis Bay, Kromme River, and the Kabeljouws River areas. Bornman said that additional evacuations were ordered. Road closures were reported along the R330 and N2 between Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay. On 10 January, ground and aerial firefighting operations intensified, and helicopters were deployed for water-bombing, and the Working on Fire teams were mobilised. On 11 and 12 January, major fire fronts were largely under control. Bornman said that on these days, mop-up and monitoring operations continued with some flare-ups persisting near the Kabeljouws
River and Oyster Bay. “The residential communities affected by the fires were Zwartenbosch, St Francis Bay, Linderhof, Oyster Bay and Paradise Beach. The rural and farming areas affected were Kromme River, Riverside, Hankey, Kabeljouws River and Smith Town,” said Bornman. “The infrastructure impacted included temporary power outages in Humansdorp and surrounding areas. The R330 and N2 were also temporarily closed.” Bornman further said that the response efforts to combat the fires included aerial support with helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft actively involved in water-bombing operations, particularly around St Francis Bay (Oyster Bay Road) and Kabeljouws River. “At least three helicopters were deployed during peak fire days, and additional water bombers were facilitated by Gift of the Givers at St Francis Bay airfield,” said Bornman. He said that Kouga Municipality Fire Services led frontline operations and evacuation procedures, with Working on Fire teams deployed for containment and firebreak creation. Bornman further said that Gift of the Givers, the municipality, and volunteers provided logistical support, water supply, and relief to evacuees. He said that they also received support from Sarah Baartman District Municipality’s Municipal Manager and officials, and neighbouring municipalities, including Beyers Naudé Municipality, Blue Crane Route and Sundays River Valley municipalities, which provided additional firefighting resources. Meanwhile, the South African Police Service, KLM Traffic Services, and community volunteers assisted with evacuations, traffic control, and public safety. “Residents donated water, meals, and a variety of necessities for our firefighters, and Relay EMS provided medical care to our firefighters
No rain in sight: Kouga Dam drops to 48% RAZAAN PLAATJIES THE Kouga Dam’s water levels have declined significantly to 48.48%, down from 59.67% recorded in November last year, as the region continues to experience severe drought conditions with no meaningful rainfall in the catchment area. Rienette Colesky, CEO of the Gamtoos Water Users’ Association, confirmed that the declining Kouga Dam levels are purely due to a lack of rain in the catchment and not due to increased water demand or seasonal tourist influx to the Kouga region. “The current level of the dam is purely due to a lack of rain in the catchment and surrounding areas,” said Colesky. She said that usually when the northern parts of the country receive extensive amounts of rain, the Eastern Cape receives less rain, which is currently the case. The severity of the drought conditions has become evident across the region, with river systems showing alarming signs of distress. Colesky said that a Gamtoos Water Users’ Association employee who regularly monitors the catchment areas has confirmed that the river systems are currently very dry. She further
said that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has been abstracting more water than the average from Loerie Dam, but it’s still within the allocated restricted volume that was determined based on different water sources. The current situation represents a significant setback for the region, which celebrated a major milestone when the Kouga Dam overflowed in September 2023 for the first time since 2015. Elaborating on the impact of the fires, he said that multiple residential and holiday areas were evacuated for safety. There were temporary road closures and electricity outages in affected zones. The fires caused significant vegetation loss across hillside and riverine areas and created a risk of soil erosion in affected zones. “The fires are largely contained, with ongoing monitoring and mop-up operations. Minor flare-ups persist near the Kabeljouws River and St Francis Bay (Oyster Bay Road). Roads and electricity have been restored, and residents are returning to evacuated areas under safety advisories,” said Bornman. While firefighting operations were largely successful, the emergency response took a tragic turn when a body was discovered during the firefighting efforts. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, on 9 January at 20:30, firefighters and community members battling rapidly spreading fires in the Kouga region discovered a decomposed body on a farm. “It is alleged the body was found burning at the scene,” said Gantana. She said that the identification of the deceased forms part of the ongoing investigation. “Police are also investigating a possible link to a missing persons report filed on 30 December 2025 for a 63-year-old man, who was last seen near the Zwartenboch Golf Course in Humansdorp on 29 December 2025,” said Gantana. She said that the investigation continues. SPCA Humansdorp chairperson, Louise Bakkes, said that as the flames ravaged the beautiful coastal region, the SPCA was on the frontlines, fighting to protect and care for the animals affected. “The recent wildfires have had a profound
impact on our local wildlife. Thankfully, we received an incredible amount of assistance from our team and community members,” said Bakkes. Bakkes said that they were grateful to have been joined by the NSPCA’s Wildlife Team, who provided invaluable guidance and support during their response efforts. “Together, we’ve been sweeping and searching burnt areas, checking for injured wildlife,” said Bakkes. She said that her teams had unfortunately encountered tortoise carcasses, dead snakes, and a significant number of charred centipedes, highlighting the vulnerability of slow-moving species. “Our teams have covered Hankey, Melkhoutbos, Kabeljous, Twin Valley, Krom River/Oyster Bay, and surrounding areas, with ongoing efforts in these regions. We’re providing care to a burned tortoise found during our search,” said Bakkes. With the immediate crisis subsiding, she said that they are focused on providing essential support to surviving wildlife. Furthermore, Bakkes said that water and food stations are being set up in burnt areas, ensuring animals can access vital resources. “The response from our community has been overwhelming. Volunteers, donors, and local businesses have rallied around us, providing vital support and resources. We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to our relief efforts,” said Bakkes. “The SPCA is committed to caring for animals and serving our community. The livewire who refuses to sit still ELLEN HANCKE SHE was about to turn 50. She sold her business in Jeffreys Bay, packed her bags and set off to work as a chef in a factory in London. But for Jeanne Neale-May, the work at the McLaren factory was only her means to get to tour Scotland, Wales and Ireland. She spent her most memorable birthday in Bracknell near Ascot. And one thing is for sure, this livewire does not do ordinary or boring! Jeanne was born in Kariega as the first daughter of Elaine and Jock Ward. Her brother Andrew Ward was the eldest, and she had a younger sister, Delene Evert. Since her early days, Jeanne knew that she had a deep yearning to serve others. During her final years at Riebeek College, she realised that she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a voluntary worker. Nursing was her second choice, but this did not exactly pan out the way she thought. She went to study Floral Art and Design at the Elro School of Arts in Pretoria while staying with her mother’s sister, Heather Gouws. After obtaining her Master’s Certificate in the third year of her studies, Jeanne returned to Kariega. On her return, she started working at Frost’s Florist in John Street, Kariega. She remembers some of the weird orders during her years of being a florist. “I had to do the flowers for a big wedding. The main arrangement was only a few flowers, but had to be elaborate and consisted of fruits, nuts and sweets. It was h-u-g-e, and we struggled with the transportation to the wedding.” Another strange request was a half-moon arrangement in a wicker basket. And then of course there were quite a few of those exorbitant “I-am-sorry” peace offerings. “I once had to go to the couple’s home to strew rose petals from the front door up to

their bathroom, while she was at work. And of course, he also ordered a very large and expensive bouquet of red roses!” Jeanne married Tony Neale-May from Port Alfred in 1972. He later sadly passed on after a serious motor vehicle accident. Her mother had started the Drostdy Workshop for the mentally and physically challenged in Kariega. The first intake in the then Salvation Army Hall was for only six people. Jeanne and her sister joined their mother, and their involvement soon had the numbers escalating to 45 people between the ages of 15 and 45 years. “We approached different businesses to assist us in earning pocket money for our ‘patients’. Volkswagen and Hella came to the table, and soon we had happy people sorting nuts and bolts and doing menial tasks in order to be kept busy, as well as earning themselves some pocket money.” One day, she suddenly had the inkling that moving to Jeffreys Bay seemed a good idea. Everybody in the Kouga region soon got to know Jeanne from Jenny’s Flower Shop! Little did they know that after nearly every lock-up, Jeanne would rush home to go fishing! Her son, Robert, owned a rubber duck. The two of them would launch and go fishing, usually to well after sunset! Jeanne also soon started taking part in numerous fishing competitions. In her best catch, she landed a healthy cob of 7kg, which she still hopes to surpass on the scale! Her worst experience on a fishing trip was when taking part in a competition. “It happened to be a scorching day. And out at sea, the glare was intense. That evening, upon arriving home, the doctor had to be called in. “Even the white part of my eyes was burnt, and he had to give me injections and medication for severe sunstroke.” Jeanne is also a very keen bridge player, which she started with her friend, Judy Slabbert, in 1979. But in 2009, a big health scare changed Jeanne’s life. “I suffered from high blood pressure and was a Type 2 diabetic. I knew I had to make serious changes to my eating habits.” She immediately started studying different health practices on the internet. She learned through trial and error, but soon she began not only feeling more energetic, but also started dropping weight. Today, Jeanne is a fit, trim and healthy example of her gluten-free, green-smoothie-rich lifestyle. She also has her regulars following her kombucha, sourdough tortillas, kefir and green smoothie eating plan. “I just love my kitchen! This is where I experiment and play with recipes. I have standing orders for my three different sizes of tortillas, which can be eaten with scrumptious fillings. “I happily teach people to make their own kefir, which I use in my smoothies and as an ingredient in the tortillas. So many people have been converted to a better lifestyle. They are usually amazed at how you easily get accustomed to this lifestyle.” Apart from playing bridge and fishing, Jeanne loves spending time with her grandchildren. Her life mantra is never to sit still, forever gaining more knowledge and to make time for new, fun experiences.

Pa en seun word saam vlammevegters vir J’Baai ELLEN HANCKE “MOENIE ’n krisis mors nie!” Dit is die ingesteldheid van ’n Jeffreysbaaise pa wat besluit het om sy 13-jarige seun ’n kosbare lewensles te leer. Hannes Bekker het naamlik die brandkrisis gebruik om sy seun Heinrich te bemagtig, deur hom oor die naweek saam te neem na die vernietigende brandtonele. “Ek het gesien my seun was besig om soos vele ander van sy ouderdomsgroep, aanlyn rekenaarspeletjies te speel. “Ek het eintlik impulsief besluit om hom saam met my te neem en hy was dadelik entoesiasties!” Hannes vertel dat die vernuf van die helikopter- en die waterbomvliegtuigloodse hulle verstom het. “Ons het ingespring om agter die boere se voorbrande sowat tien meter weg van die vlammesee, te help.” Hannes en Heinrich was daar met Hannes se 4x4-voertuig met ’n 1,000 liter “flowbin” en ook hul brandslaanflappe. “My seun het my verstom deur tot drie ure lank agter vlamme aan te hardloop met sy vuurplak.”
Hy sê die publiek se samewerking was ongelooflik. Tientalle bakkies het opgedaag met koue drinkwater, energiestafies, vrugte, koeldrank en broodjies. “My seun kon verskeie lewensvaardighede wyser word naamlik dat onbeheersde vure binne enkele oomblikke tot ’n ramp kan lei; dat indien ’n gemeenskap saamstaan, daar wonderwerke kan gebeur; en dat selfs kinders ’n rol kan speel tydens ’n krisis en dat almal ’n plig teenoor hul gemeenskap het.” Heinrich is natuurlik allermins ’n lui tiener. Die knapie het vroeër vanjaar aan die werk gespring met die maak van houtkiste en daarmee ’n enorme bedrag van R50 000 ingesamel vir ’n oorsese sporttoer. Hy was deel van die SA Skopboksspan wat in Sheffield, Engeland aan die wêreldkampioenskappe gaan deelneem het. Hier het hy ’n silwer en goue medalje verower. Hannes sê dat hy en sy seun al geruime tyd een keer ’n week ’n afspraak het om iets saam te doen. “Dit gebeur dikwels dat my preke aanleiding gee tot onwillekeurige gape aan sy kant. En nou het ek ook ’n waardevolle lewensles geleer. Om iets prakties saam met jou kind te doen, is ’n baie beter roete as om voortdurend te preek.”
SPAR provides R100,000 relief to fire-affected communities SPAR has recently provided much-needed support for communities and emergency teams affected by the ongoing fires in the Nelson Mandela Bay and Kouga Municipalities of the Eastern Cape. The fires have caused widespread disruption in the region, with evacuations in areas such as Kromrivier and Oyster Bay, the closure of the N2 between Gqeberha and Jeffreys Bay, and emergency services working around the clock to contain multiple blazes and flare-ups. In response, SPAR Eastern Cape Distribution Centre (DC) has stepped in to provide urgent relief support to both frontline responders and displaced families with essential items worth R100,000. "Our thoughts are with the firefighters, emergency teams and families who are dealing with the impact of these fires," said Na-
tasha Rogan, SPAR Eastern Cape Marketing Executive. "While this is a small gesture, we hope it offers some practical support to those working tirelessly on the ground and to communities that have been affected." "We would like to thank SPAR and members of the broader community for the support received, which has been of real value to our teams on the ground," said Angelique Minnie, Divisional Head at the Fire Department of Nelson Mandela Bay. Each duo had to prepare an elaborate menu for 25 guests, drawing inspiration from nostalgic party food of decades past - from “Crimplene Cuisine” classics and fondue to cocktail meatballs, cheese-andgherkin skewers and feather-light mousse desserts reminiscent of the 1990s. As always, Kokkedoor, the latest season of which was filmed in the Western Cape seaside town of Struisbaai, delivered a surprise twist. Contestants were instructed to cook not only for the judges, but also for the “ducks from their own pond” - a metaphor that soon became meaningful when family members and loved ones arrived to support the finalists, triggering an emotional moment marked by tears, hugs and renewed determination in the kitchen. In the end, the judges were impressed by both teams’ menus, presentation and storytelling. However, it was Hanna and Dirk who edged ahead, praised for their balance of nostalgia and innovation, confident execution under pressure, and the authenticity of their food narrative. They were officially named the first family winners of Kokkedoor: Son & See. Reflecting on the experience, Hanna said the competition had changed her perspective completely. “Beforehand, I thought it would mainly be about cooking. Afterwards, I realised it’s just as much about being human. You learn who you are under pressure, how deep you can dig, and how to trust - in yourself and in each other,” she said. Dirk echoed the sentiment, describing the journey as deeply meaningful. “Sharing a kitchen with my mom and telling our food story together was gold. Kokkedoor reminded me why I love cooking - it’s storytelling with your hands,” he said. Beyond the title, the series forged lasting friendships. Contestants remain in close contact via a WhatsApp group, sharing recipes, encouragement and conversation - a testament to the strong sense of family that developed throughout the season. As winners, Hanna and Dirk walked away with R500,000 in prize money, sponsored by World Sports Betting, and each received a Mervyn Gers dining set. THE Boss Models Face of JBay 2025 competition reached its conclusion this past December at Fountains Mall, marking a first for the region. Hosted by Ace Models Kouga, the event introduced a new platform for emerging modelling talent in Jeffreys Bay, with a clear focus on identifying individuals with international potential. Open castings were held on 27 and 28 December, drawing over 200 contestants between the ages of 14 and 23 to Fountains Mall. From this pool, ten finalists were selected to return on 29 December for the final round, where they presented their confidence, presence, and runway ability. Each of the Top 10 finalists received a rewards package consisting of R2,000 in cash, an R800 surf-shop clothing voucher, a Fountains Mall voucher, and a professional Be Original makeup kit. These prizes reflected the quality and credibility of the Boss Models platform and its partners. Sixteen-year-old Tamika Coombs stood out among the finalists and was crowned the Boss Models Face of JBay 2025. Her prize included a threeyear contract with Boss Models Cape Town, a R15,000 signing bonus, and R10,000 worth of professional portfolio shoots to support the start of her modelling career. The event was made possible through collaboration between Ace Models Kouga and key sponsors, including Be Original and Fountains Mall. Their support continues to play an important role in developing local talent and growing Jeffreys Bay’s presence in the fashion industry. Woodlands Dairy hosts 23rd annual First Choice Race THE 23rd annual First Choice Race, hosted by Woodlands Dairy, took place on Saturday, 3 January 2026, at Victory Christian School in Jeffreys Bay, and once again proved to be a resounding success. The event drew record-breaking participation across its three categories: the 15km main race, the 6km fun run, and the ever-popular 60m Milki Moo Dash for children under nine, cementing its status as one of the region’s most anticipated sporting fixtures.
