Before dawn on May 18, as fierce winds battered the world’s highest peak, Zach Smith reached the summit of Mount Everest at 03:00. This moment marked not just personal triumph but the near-completion of an 18-year mountaineering quest sparked in childhood by adventure books. The American, living in Jeffreys Bay since 2010, scaled Everest in just six hours — about half the usual time — before safely descending to base camp.
