Crime drops 7% as police intensify enforcement

Hermanus has recorded an overall 7,29% reduction in crime during the first six months of 2025, but police were grappling with dramatic increases in drug-related offences and drunk-driving incidents, according to crime statistics released by the Station Commander, Col Gustav Tamboer.

The crime figures, comparing April to September 2025 with the same period in 2024, reveal a complex picture of progress alongside emerging challenges that require intensified law enforcement efforts.

While property-related crimes plummeted by 28,49%, substance-related offenses surged dramatically. Drug-related crime increased by 71,45%, while driving under the influence incidents skyrocketed by 214,89% compared to the previous year. “Crime heavily dependent on police action shows a huge increase of 78,95%,” Tamboer stated, indicating stepped-up enforcement operations have uncovered more offences previously going undetected.

Contact crimes, involving direct confrontation between perpetrator and victim, increased by 3,38%. Within this category assault causing grievous bodily harm rose by 26,37%, while common assault increased by 5,88%.

Sexual offences showed concerning trends, with attempted sexual offences rising by 50% and sexual assault increasing by 40%. However, murder, rape and business robberies remained stable compared to 2024 figures.

Property crimes showed significant improvement, with a trio of crime –murder, rape, and robbery – decreasing by 29,41%. House robberies dropped by 35,71%, while residential burglaries fell by 23,12% and business burglaries decreased by 60%.

Vehicle-related crimes saw mixed results. Theft of motor vehicles decreased by 33,33%, and stolen vehicles dropped by an impressive 97,67%. However, stolen property cases increased by 208,33%.

ENFORCEMENT SUCCESS STORIES

Several crime categories showed sub-

stantial decreases, reflecting successful policing strategies. Arson cases dropped by 75%, while stock theft was eliminated entirely. Attempted murder decreased by 29,41%, and aggravated robbery fell by 24,07%.

The illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 12,5%, while dealing in liquor rose by 67,69%, suggesting increased enforcement in these areas.

FESTIVE SEASON PREPARATIONS

With the festive season approaching, Tamboer announced the launch of enhanced security measures. “Our Festive Season Operational Plan is in place for execution,” he said, following last Monday's Safer Festive Season launch at Mount Pleasant Sportsground.

The station commander emphasised community partnership in achieving the crime reduction: “The reduction in crime overall shows the impact of the integrated approach in Hermanus. We need to thank and congratulate all stakeholders involved and more important our community.”

AREAS REQUIRING INTERVENTION

Tamboer identified several areas of concern requiring integrated approaches, particularly the increases in violent crimes and substance-related offenses. The dramatic rise in drunk driving incidents poses particular risks during the upcoming holiday period. “However, there were areas of concern which needs an integrated approach to reduce those concerned areas,” the colonel noted, highlighting the need for continued vigilance despite overall improvements. The crime statistics reflect broader law-enforcement trends, with increased detection and prosecution of previously hidden offenses contributing to higher reported numbers in certain categories while traditional property crimes decline. As Hermanus prepares for increased tourist activity during the festive season, police are implementing comprehensive operational plans to maintain and improve the positive crime reduction trend while addressing emerging challenges in substance abuse and violent crime.

Distemper alert

Nearly 200 dogs have been impounded across three Overstrand communities as authorities battle a continuing canine distemper outbreak that poses serious health risks to the local dog population.

The Overstrand Municipality (OM), working alongside local animal-welfare organisations, has recorded 189 impoundments to date as part of a coordinated response to contain the highly contagious viral disease. “Hermanus has been hardest hit with 122 impoundments, followed by Gansbaai with 36 and Kleinmond with 31,” Dean O’Neill, OM Municipal Manager, said.

animals. Early symptoms include runny nose, watery eyes and sore throat, but the disease can progress to more severe neurological complications.

“The municipality has placed capture cages at local transfer stations to assist with the safe collection of roaming animals,” O’Neill said.

“Officers are actively collecting not only stray and sick dogs but also unwanted animals whose owners can no longer provide care due to financial constraints or food shortages.”

The outbreak has prompted a joint operation involving Municipal Law Enforcement officers and three animal-welfare societies: Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (Haws), Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society (Kaws), and the Birkenhead Animal Rescue Centre (Barc).

“The respective animal-welfare societies have been instrumental in managing stray dog impoundments in response to the outbreak,” O’Neill said.

According to experts the canine distemper attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of dogs, making it particularly dangerous for unvaccinated

Health officials emphasise that vaccination remains the most effective protection against the disease, with immunisation recommended from as early as six weeks old.

“Early vaccination not only prevents unnecessary suffering,” a health official explained, “but also protects the broader dog population from infection.”

The removal of infected animals from the population is considered essential for preventing further spread of the virus throughout the communities.

Residents who encounter sick, stray or unwanted dogs are urged to contact the Overstrand Municipal Law Enforcement Control Room immediately.

The 24-hour hotline operates on 028 313 8996.

Illegal hunting in Sandbaai

Three unfortunate incidents were reported in Sandbaai along the green belt on Kusweg Road. In the first incident, Franklins were chased and caught by children who were unaccompanied by adult supervision.

Equally disturbing was an incident on Monday when three dogs were released onto a flock of guinea fowl. These dogs also pose a serious threat to smaller mammals and reptiles such as snakes, tortoises, and porcupines. Such acts of cruelty are deeply concerning, as the dogs often tear the ani-

mals apart.

In addition, there have been increasing reports of endemic plants and bulbs being dug up and stripped in broad daylight. Residents are urged to report any illegal hunting activities immediately to law enforcement on 028 313 8996, so that appropriate action can be taken against the dogs and their owners. Provide as much information as possible - including location, time, and detailed descriptions, with photographs if available - help protect and conserve our green belts and coastal areas.

Vlamme steeds hoog

The battle continues against the canine distemper outbreak in the Overstrand.

Justice for Dimpo

More than three years after the brutal murder of Dimpo Skelenge her murderer, Wiseman Ndara, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday 17 October in the Somerset West Regional Court.

Skelenge’s body was found on 7 September 2022. Ndara was her ex-boyfriend, and the case served to highlight the epidemic proportions of gender-based violence in South Africa, what with many silent protesters gathering regularly outside the Caledon Court determined to make as strong a message as possible, but also to support Skelenge’s family. (“Woman killed, man arrested”, Hermanus Times 14 September 2022; “Women’s lives matter”, Hermanus Times, 7 August 2024; “No closure yet for family”, Hermanus Times, 30 October 2024).

The case was initially heard at the Caledon Magistrates’ Court before transferring to the Somerset West Regional Court. After a long, drawn-out court case Skelenge’s family can at long last get closure, knowing justice has been served.

Hermanus Times spoke to Skelenge’s sister and anti-GBV ambassadors about the sentence handed down to Ndara.

“Although Dimpo will not come back, we are finally going to get closure,” Babalwa Skelenge declared.

“My mother, Lydia, is also fine now, knowing justice has been served. We are very happy with the sentence; it’s been such a very long time. Although travelling from Zolani to Somerset West for court appearances was costly, we went every time.”

Mkhanyiseli Hlapezulu, a GBV ambassador from Zolani, said he was happy with the sentence. “That’s what we wanted. That’s what we fought for. Jesus answered our prayers. We are thankful that justice has been served.

“We are happy that this has now been resolved as this case has been dragging on for so long.” GBV ambassador Khanyisili Manyosi from Zolani.

“A life sentence could effectively mean 20-25 years in prison. He should stay there forever. 25 years is not going to bring Dimpo back, but nevertheless, at least now justice has been served and the family is also happy with the sentence.

“As GBV ambassadors we have been part of this case since the very beginning,

and although travelling expenses were financially draining we didn’t have a problem moving from Caledon to Somerset West. That’s what we do, that’s our work.

“I think this will also be a lesson to those who commit GBV. There are still too many men doing this and they need to be educated about GBV. I am also very happy with the magistrate, who was very clear in her sentencing. Other perpetrators need to take heed of this.”

Tanya Bippert of One Billion Rising, who followed the proceedings from the beginning and regularly organised court support and silent protests against gender-based violence outside the Caledon court, stated:

“More than three years after the murder of Dimpo justice has been served. The murderer, Wiseman Ndara, played the courts for time while her family prayed for justice.

“May Dimpo’s mother and family start healing and may they find some sort of closure. We will never forget you Dimpo. May your soul rest in peace.”

In a WhatsApp group dedicated to justice for Skelenge the following was written after the sentencing of Ndara: “As GBV ambassadors we continue to stand for every woman, man and child whose life was taken too soon. Let this be a reminder that justice delayed is not justice denied.”

Grabouw police ops yield 211 arrests in crime blitz

Grabouw police arrested 211 suspects during intensive crime prevention operations conducted over the past two weeks of October, targeting serious violent crimes and enhancing community safety within the policing precinct.

The multi-agency operations, conducted in partnership with various law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders, focused on crime hotspots identified through intelligence reports and community information. Arrests were made for offences including murder, drug dealing and possession, illegal firearms and ammunition possession, drunk driving, housebreaking and theft, assault, robbery, illegal liquor sales, undocumented immigration, fraud, possession of stolen property, and possession of protected marine resources.

The operations included school safety initiatives at Umyezo and Groenberg High Schools, stop-and-search procedures, drug enforcement, firearms

confiscation, wanted suspect tracing, liquor compliance checks, secondhand goods monitoring, road safety enforcement, counterfeit goods detection, and immigration compliance. Police seized significant quantities of drugs including crystal methamphetamine (Tik), cocaine, and Mandrax, along with dangerous weapons, firearms, ammunition, counterfeit goods, expired products, stolen property, abalone, and other protected marine resources. Various traffic and bylaw violation fines were also issued.

The operations involved collaboration between Grabouw police, Overberg District Task Team, Overberg Flying Squad, K9 units, TWK law enforcement, traffic departments, Correctional Services, emergency medical services, private security companies, community policing forums, neighbourhood watches, and farm watches.

Undocumented individuals arrested in raid

Over the weekend, Overstrand Municipality law enforcement teams, in collaboration with the South African Police Services and immigration officers, conducted a multidisciplinary law enforcement operation in Kleinmond and Hermanus.

“During the operation, eight undocumented foreign nationals were arrested at their business premises in Kleinmond under the Immigration Act. In addition, ten individuals were apprehended for

outstanding traffic and by-law fines after failing to appear in court,” the Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill, said. In Hermanus, law enforcement authorities conducted an inspection where they discovered an individual operating an illegal pharmacy and dispensing medicine without the necessary qualifications.

According to O’Neill during the operation, officers confiscated six boxes containing 288 bottles of Benylin with codeine, valued at approximately R7 515.

EMERGENCYCARE, NOWCLOSER TOHOME

As technology continues to shape how we live and work, South Africa’s Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECTA) has become essential in regulating online communication and e-commerce.

ECTA provides the legal foundation for digital transactions, ensuring that documents, contracts, and communications conducted electronically have the same force as those on paper. With only a few exceptions — such as wills and documents for the sale of immovable property — most agreements can now be signed and stored electronically. Under Section 11(1), an electronic record or “data message” is not without legal effect simply because it exists in digital form. This means a PDF contract stored on your computer carries the same legal weight as a printed one in a filing cabinet.

Equally important is Section 13, which recognises electronic signatures as valid and binding. Whether a document is signed using a digital platform, by typing your name, or by using a stylus or “draw” function, it can constitute a valid signature — provided it identifies the person and indicates their acceptance of the document’s contents. In today’s digital environment, understanding these provisions is crucial. ECTA empowers individuals and businesses to transact confidently online, knowing their electronic agreements and signatures are legally protected. However, it also serves as a reminder to treat electronic signing with the same caution and responsibility as traditional pen-on-paper contracts. NMT for Hermanus

It is an initiative that aims to transform mobility through safer walking and cycling infrastructure across Overstrand. The Western Cape Department of Mobility has officially launched an ambitious Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Demonstration Town Project in Hermanus, marking a significant step toward reimagining sustainable mobility across Overstrand’s communities.

Launched on 21 October the initiative promotes walking and cycling as safe, sustainable alternatives to motorised transport, addressing infrastructure gaps and concerning pedestrian fatality rates in the region.

“I am preaching to the converted, as the leadership of Overstrand Municipality and its stakeholders fully support this great initiative,” said Minister Isaac Sileku of the Western Cape Department of Mobility. “Today’s activation is a true testament to the commitment of the Mobility Department in promoting non-motorised transport as an integral part of the public transport system.”

The project comes at a critical time when many residents depend on walking and cycling to reach schools, employment, and essential services, yet face inadequate infrastructure and safety concerns daily.

According to the Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill, Hermanus was selected as the demon-

stration town for several compelling reasons: it represents 61% of Overstrand’s population, has eight construction-ready NMT projects, demonstrates strong economic activity with over 11 000 full-time jobs and 2 200 businesses, and sits within walking and cycling distance of underserved communities.

Executive Mayor Archie Klaas emphasised the project’s transformative potential: “We are reaffirming our commitment to designing towns that work for people and places where walking and cycling are safe and reliable ways to move, live, and thrive.”

The initiative includes developing safe, connected walking and cycling routes, implementing traffic calming measures, improving intersections, distributing bicycles with safety training, and organising open streets events.

Sileku highlighted the broader impact: “By investing in safe and accessible walking and cycling infrastructure, we are not only saving lives but also connecting people to opportunities.”

The project aligns with provincial and local frameworks, promising to deliver measurable improvements in road safety, accessibility, and quality of life while serving as a proof of concept for expanding NMT investment across the Western Cape.

Youths get work quickly

Nine young people from Hawston celebrated a major milestone last week as they received certificates after completing five months of intensive hospitality training through the Kickstart Programme, with six securing immediate employment at Arabella Hotel and Spa, Southern Sun.

The successful programme, developed and facilitated by Martell Taylor and Desiree Gelderblom, demonstrates the power of partnerships between local government, private industry, and community organisations in creating tangible employment opportunities for youth in the Overberg region. The training was made possible through collaboration with the Rupert Foundation, Southern Sun, Association of People with Disabilities, and numerous tourism industry partners who provided practical training opportunities, including Burgundy Restaurant Hermanus, Gabrielskloof, The Marine, Benguela Cove, Hermanus Tourism Bureau, Birkenhead House, and Windsor Hotel Hermanus.

The Kickstart Programme has evolved through three impactful phases, each designed to create real employment pathways for people with and without disabilities.

Phase 1 initially focused on individuals with disabilities and has already produced remarkable success stories. Graduate Shaune now works as a barista at Arabella Hotel & Spa and recently won the national Southern Sun

Barista competition. She is set to compete at the national finals this week, representing both her employer and the programme’s effectiveness.

Two other Phase 1 participants are currently completing internships at Allure Hair Salon, while The Beanery played a crucial role in providing early barista training.

Phase 2 expanded into comprehensive hospitality training, run in partnership with Arabella Hotel & Spa. This phase combined theoretical learning with hands-on practical experience across Front of House, Kitchen, and Housekeeping departments, preparing participants for immediate entry into the hospitality workforce.

Phase 3, currently underway, returns focus to working with people with disabilities, emphasising work readiness, life skills, and employability training with the goal of securing internships

and long-term employment opportunities. Industry Partnership Model the programme’s success highlights the effectiveness of combining community need with industry expertise and private sector commitment. By involving established hospitality businesses in both training and employment phases, the initiative ensures participants gain relevant, market-ready skills while addressing real workforce needs in the tourism sector. The immediate employment of six graduates demonstrates the programme’s practical value and suggests strong potential for expansion across the Overberg’s growing tourism industry.

The Kickstart Programme represents a model for sustainable youth development that other communities could replicate, turning training investment into measurable employment outcomes while supporting local economic growth.

Minister opens upgraded road

The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) last week celebrated the official opening of the extensively upgraded Stanford-Gansbaai corridor. This project to upgrade and rehabilitate about 20 km of Trunk Road (TR) 28/2 between Stanford and Gansbaai, and to upgrade 3,8 km of Minor Road 4017 (OP4017) from a gravel road to a surfaced road was not only succesful but also welcomed by the commuters. All agree that the R491,8 million investment delivers worldclass connectivity with unique environmental features and significant job creation.

“TR28/2 is commonly known as the R43, and OP4017 is the road that runs between Stanford and Springfontein Wine Estate,” said Jandré Bakker, DOI Director for Operational Support. “TR28/2 has now been upgraded to a Class 1 road, OP4017 has been upgraded to a surfaced Class 4 rural road between km-0,14 and km-3,67, and 500 m of OP 4017 has been regravelled.

Asphalt overlays have also been done on 400 m of road in

Gansbaai and on 3,2 km of road in Stanford, and street lighting has been installed. This extensive project was a R491,8 million investment in the area,” Bakker added.

Some of the features and additions to the road include:

• 12 bus stops have been built at accesses along TR28/2;

• Three auxiliary/climbing lanes have been built on TR28/2;

• Turning lanes have been constructed at major accesses on TR28/2;

• Major accesses from TR28/2 and OP4017 have been surfaced;

• Concrete drains and erosion control structures have been built where there are deep cuttings;

• Various stormwater drainage structures have been built;

• Guardrails have been installed and asphalt berms built at high fills; and

• Road signage has been installed.

“When constructing roads, we have to take various concerns into consideration and an interesting feature of this project is

the construction of major culvert structures to allow, among others, frogs to cross the road safely by going underneath it,” said Minister Tertuis Simmers.

“Creating work opportunities through our infrastructure projects remains one of our top priorities and I am pleased to announce that this project created 369 short-term work opportunities against a target of 350. We created 68 296 person-days of work against a target of 63 266.

More than R123,5 million was spent on procuring goods and services from targeted enterprises against a target of just over R91 million. We supported 16 local enterprises, but we exceeded the target of 12 emerging contractors by having 20 benefit from the project,” Simmers continued.

“I am proud of my team, but I also urge road users to use the infrastructure we build responsibly and to look after it.

“We do our bit for you, now it is up to road users, from drivers, to cyclists and pedestrians to play their part by looking after this asset,” Simmers concluded.

Regenerative farming delivers

Tru-Cape producer Ruhan Hauman, fifth-generation farmer on his family’s farm Diepgat in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, has achieved his best crop ever this year - both in yield and packout percentage - thanks to his pioneering shift to regenerative farming practices.

On the farm’s 25 hectares of apples and pears, alongside onions and a Jersey dairy supplying milk to Fairview for cheese making, Hauman is transforming the way fruit is grown in South Africa. His results show that farming with nature, rather than against it, can deliver record harvests while cutting costs.

A former professional rugby player who played for French club Brive, Hauman returned to Diepgat in 2019 with a fresh perspective on food and farming. “In Europe, people care deeply about where their food comes from and how it’s grown,” he explains. “When I had to order pesticides in my first week back, I lost sleep over it. It didn’t feel right. I wanted to farm in a way that builds life, not destroys it. To eliminate pesticides, I had to start by building soil health and diversity.”

Hauman never studied agriculture formally, but immersed himself in books, research, and documentaries such as Kiss the Ground and What Your Food Ate To ensure buy-in, he encouraged his father, Len, and their team to share in his vision.

“There are not many regenerative fruit farmers in South Africa, so trials were the only way forward. Seeing is believing,” he says.

Hauman began by dividing orchards into blocks and testing different soil treatments: two types of organic fertiliser, compost made from cattle and chicken manure, manure water from the farm’s dairy, and, as a control, conventional fertiliser.

CLOSING THE LOOP

“The manure water and compost combination gave by far the best results,” he explains. “Incredibly, everything we need is already here on the farm — we just had to use it better. Closing

the loop has also cut our production costs dramatically.”

No synthetic fertiliser has been applied on Diepgat since 2022.

COVER CROPS AND GRAZING

Next, Hauman focused on reducing ground pesticides by encouraging natural cover crops. Clovers, which fix nitrogen in the soil, flourished on their own.

To enhance soil fertility further, he integrated two herds of Jersey heifers into the orchards from post-harvest to bud break. Not only are their urine and manure valuable to the soil, but also their

hoof action and utilisation of cover crops.

“It was incredible to see the change,” he says. “We allow the cows to graze about two-thirds of the vegetation. Clover and other favourable species pop up without sowing, and the effect on the soil is visible.”

IRRIGATES ONCE A WEEK

The benefits go beyond fertility. With healthier soils and lush cover crops regulating temperature, Hauman now irrigates once a week instead of three times - cutting water use by nearly a third in a water-scarce country. Pollination has also improved, allowing him to halve the number of beehives required per hectare.

To protect irrigation systems, lines were lifted off the ground, and during summer, the cover crops are mechanically mowed. “Healthier soil leads to healthier plants with better pest and disease resistance,” he says.

Hauman’s next mission is to reduce chemical inputs in the trees themselves. He is experimenting with softer mineral oils, environmentally friendly sprays, and strict monitoring of insect traps to avoid unnecessary spraying.

A flock of ducks keeps snail populations under control. At some point, he wants to introduce natural predators to keep insects at bay as well.

The return of biodiversity is clear: dung beetles, egrets, earthworms, and even fish eagles have become regular sights on Diepgat.

“The gradual improvement over the past three years has been the most rewarding. Our latest crop

Akteur namens Riviersonderend in Spanje

was our best yet, even as neighbouring farms had only average seasons.

“Both yield and pack-out improved, while input costs dropped significantly. It proves that healthier soils grow better fruit,” he says proudly.

For Hauman, regenerative farming is about more than economics. “It’s not about chasing organic certification or premiums. It’s about doing the right thing. And about balance - healthy soil, healthy trees, healthy fruit, and ultimately healthy people. We want to leave the land better than we found it.”

He adds that growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly practices, alongside tighter regulations on agrochemicals, may unlock new market opportunities for regenerative fruit.

Roelf Pienaar, Managing Director of Tru-Cape, South Africa’s largest exporter of apples and pears, applauds Hauman’s pioneering work.

“By rethinking long-standing practices, Ruhan is proving that fruit farming can be profitable, productive, and environmentally restorative.

“His success speaks directly to what Tru-Cape stands for. Our logo features a ladybug - ‘Nature’s Helper’- as a reminder that farming works best when it is in harmony with nature. What Ruhan is doing on Diepgat is a real-life example of that philosophy in action. It shows how growers can reduce inputs, support biodiversity, and still deliver excellent harvests. That is the future of fruit farming.”

As verskeie betroubare nuusbronne oor dieselfde storie berig, voeg

dit geloofwaardigheid by.

Local law firm partnership

Vorster and Steyn marked a significant milestone in its growth trajectory with a celebratory launch event, announcing a strategic alliance with Strauss Daly, a recognised top-tier law firm.

The unveiling took place at the Wine Glass, where clients and stakeholders gathered to celebrate what organisers described as “a new and exciting chapter” in both firms’ histories.

The partnership with Strauss Daly represents a major development for the local firm due to the fact that Strauss Daly is a member of the Legus International Network of Law Firms and is expected to enable the local practice to “service clients more efficiently and comprehensively”, according to the announcement. The alliance comes at a time when businesses increasingly require legal services that span multiple jurisdictions and complex international regulations.

Through this alliance the local practice positions itself to better serve clients with cross-border needs.

Strategic Benefits

The collaboration promises to bring several advantages to existing and future clients:

• Enhanced Service Delivery: The alliance enables more efficient and comprehensive legal support.

• International Expertise: Access to Strauss Daly’s global knowledge base and

Fun run in Zwe for road safety

On Saturday (25 October), the Department of Mobility’s Land Transport Management and Road Safety Management units, in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, Overstrand Municipality, the Road Accident Fund, the South African Police Service, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) hosted the first-ever fun run event in Zwelihle, Hermanus.

experience.

• Broader Capabilities: Expanded capacity to handle complex, multi-jurisdictional matters.

• Maintained Local Presence: Continued personalised service with international backing

The decision to host the launch as a client celebration underscores the firm’s commitment to maintaining strong relationships while expanding capabilities.

“The event served as an announcement and as an opportunity to demonstrate the firm’s appreciation for client loyalty,” they said.

The event aimed to encourage community members to adopt an active lifestyle while promoting road safety awareness, a crucial message as the festive season approaches and road activity increases.

More than 150 enthusiastic participants took part in the fun run, creating an energetic and positive atmosphere. The event also provided an opportunity for various stakeholders to engage directly with the community about responsible road use, pedestrian safety, and making healthier lifestyle choices.

Overstrand Mayor Archie Klaas

delivered a motivating keynote address, commending the organisers for bringing the community together in such a meaningful way. He also took part in the medal handover ceremony, congratulating participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to staying active and safe. “Road safety is a shared responsibility, when we move together safely, we protect not only ourselves but our entire community,” said Sibonile Cweni representative from the Department of Mobility’s Land Transport Safety Management. The Road Accident Fund and EMS teams were also on hand to share safety information and demonstrate how collective responsibility can save lives. In addition, the Department of Arts and Culture and IEC supported the event with music, educational activities, and voter awareness engagement, reinforcing the message that safety and wellness go hand in hand. The successful turnout and positive community spirit have inspired organisers to make this an annual event, strengthening partnerships between government departments and the community in promoting road safety and healthy living.

Mayor Archie Klaas (white top) led by example, inspiring participants at the Zwelihle fun run by also taking part in the race.

Thank you EMS Foundation for support

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation for the extraordinary support and unwavering commitment the EMS Foundation has shown to the Overstrand Western Boxing Club (OWBC) and our community.

Your generosity has been nothing short of life-changing for our organisation and the young people we serve. The R5 million investment in building our state-of-the-art gym facility has provided a safe, professional space where our boxers can train, develop their skills, and pursue their dreams. This facility stands as a testament to your belief in our mission and the potential of our youth.

Beyond the initial infrastructure investment, your ongoing support has been remarkable. The minibus taxi you provided has been instrumental in ensuring our boxers can attend training sessions and competitions safely. Your annual operational support since 2019 has enabled us to maintain consistent programming, covering essential costs including:

• Transportation of our boxers to national competitions;

• Food and accommodation during tournaments;

• Day-to-day operational expenses that keep our doors open.

Your holistic approach to community support extends far beyond boxing. The academic assistant you’ve provided ensures our young athletes don’t neglect their education while pursuing sporting excellence. The computers have opened digital learning opportunities, while the hygiene packs promote health and dignity among our participants.

Even our four-legged community members benefit from your thoughtfulness through the dog food donations, and the recycling bins demonstrate your commitment to environmental responsibility alongside community development. What truly sets the EMS Foundation apart is your understanding that sustainable change requires comprehensive support. You don’t just fund a project and walk

away – you invest in relationships, ongoing operations, and the multiple facets that contribute to a thriving community organisation.

As a concerned citizen with children who need protection I come to you today to ask, Why Hermanus?

Why is an IT specialist operating from a law firm with multiple devices in various locations allowed relaxed bail conditions? These relaxed conditions granted house arrest to be lifted so he may continue earning an income and accessing his online lifestyle where he sold child pornography on the Dark Web for Profit?! Are we to take his word because the investigation proves beyond a reasonable doubt that he

The impact of your support ripples far beyond our boxing ring. You are helping to shape future leaders, providing pathways out of difficult circumstances, and demonstrating to our community that their potential is recognised and valued.

As we continue to grow and serve more young people in our community, we are deeply grateful to have the EMS Foundation as our partner. Your wonderful work at OWBC serves as an inspiration and a model for what can be achieved when organisations commit to genuine, long-term community investment.

From all of us at OWBC – our boxers, coaches, families, and the broader community – thank you for believing in us and for making dreams possible. With deepest appreciation and respect,

What’s happening in our esteemed town? Why does an alleged child pornographer roam freely?

is innocent? A child predator is allowed to do business with unsuspecting clients, who now, inadvertently, financially support this man’s lifestyle? No name or shame due to limited information being shared with the public? What happened to the second Hermanus person who was briefly mentioned as being implicated in the original article by Netwerk24? A child pornography ring and no mention of whether he was even found? Yet the investigation is closed? When will justice be served to this community?

When is transparency a priority to keep our children and women safe? When it’s too late? Why is a rapist walking free and living across from a preschool able to operate his Airbnb business under multiple accounts to lure more victims? When are we going to be held accountable for our own silence? Only when it’s one of our children? Neighbours are molesting children and nothing is being said. A man who exposed a minor to pornography due to an addiction was allowed to continue his own lifestyle without criminal charges

thanks to a lack of interest by two welfare organisations and the police. Reports go nowhere and officials involved with pornography are being protected. All facts that our court roll and official investigators can back-up. Yet nothing is done and the public stay silent. Other towns are protesting at court and Hermanus is quiet. No name, no shame. What have you done to protect our children Hermanus?

Skolejukskei opwindend

Matrieks spring in die see

Wanneer dit by spel kom, kan min leerders by Wahleed Gallie kers vashou.

Plaaslike wynplase presteer puik

Little wheels, yet gigantic dreams

Learners from the Anna Foundation’s Oak Valley afterschool in Elgin got an early taste of the FNB Wines2Whales action during a Mini Cycling Day, a fun pre-event aimed at building excitement before the race that starts this week.

The Mini Cycling Day was hosted at Oak Valley, where the Anna Foundation, based in Raithby, runs one of its afterschool projects and where part of the FNB Wines2Whales cycling action will take place from Friday 31 October to Sunday 9 November.

The day, hosted on Thursday 2 October, featured a short cycling clinic to boost coordination, followed by a timed race and a daring “no-hands” challenge that had everyone laughing and cheering. Team members were on standby to catch any toppling riders, but most powered through with impressive balance and enthusiasm.

After some spirited competition on the bikes, learners were awarded medals: Lugail Hugo for Gees Champion, Aiden Abrahams for Trail Buddy and All-Round Rider, and Nathan Coetzee for Pedal-Power Perseverance.

Each child also received an FNB gift bag with a headlamp and quick-dry towel, made possible by Wines2Whales’ donation to the Anna Foundation last year.

“We cycled a lot and I learnt cycling makes

one fit,” 10-year-old Lenita Galant said. “I really liked riding between the cones, and I felt so happy when I climbed on the bicycle.”

Fa-eez Abrahams, the Anna Foundation’s sports project manager, said cycling sessions like these play an important role in the learners’ growth and development and it is a big part of the organisation’s sports component. “The learners really enjoy our cycling sessions, and days like this give them a chance to build their cycling skills and confidence in a fun, supportive environment,” he said.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE

Pierre-Henri Olivier, the foundation’s operations manager and a keen cyclist, said the event highlighted the organisation’s growing focus on cycling. “Cycling builds confidence, discipline and teamwork, the same values we teach through our afterschool programmes. We are proud to be an official charity of the FNB Wines2Whales and to give our learners a chance to share in this incredible event.”

The Anna Foundation’s partnership with Wines2Whales started in 2019, built on a shared commitment to uplift rural children through education, sport and life skills. Each year the foundation supports the event through cheer zones and community activities.

This year the team will once again activate at Oak Valley to cheer on riders and connect with the cycling community.

The Anna Foundation runs 21 after-school projects across the Western Cape, reaching more than 800 learners daily. Its programmes include the 3Rs initiative – Reading (Education), Running (Sports and Cycling) and Right-ing (Life Skills) – which helps learners develop academically, physically and socially.

 The organisation is dependent on donations to keep its programmes running. To support their work or get involved, visit www.annafoundation.com or send an email to info@annafoundation.com.

The team’s exceptional performance saw them claim 35 gold medals, 19 silver, and nine bronze across various gymnastics disciplines during the high-stakes national competition. The medal count was further bolstered by five fourth-place and three fifthplace finishes, demonstrating the consistent quality and depth of talent within the club. “This is an absolutely incredible achievement for our athletes,” said a club

spokesperson. “To see 51 gymnasts compete at this level and come away with such outstanding results is a testament to their dedication and the hard work of our entire coaching team.”

The competition in Centurion brought together the country’s top gymnastic talent, making the Western Cape club’s medal haul even more significant. The results span multiple age groups and disciplines, showcasing the comprehensive strength of the programme.

The success didn’t come overnight. Athletes and coaches have spent months in rigorous training preparing for the national championships, with early morning sessions and weekend competitions building toward

this pinnacle event. “Every single medal represents countless hours in the gym, perfecting routines, building strength, and developing the mental toughness needed to compete at this level,” noted one of the coaching staff.

The club’s performance at the nationals reinforces its reputation as one of the country’s premier gymnastics programmes. With such strong representation and results at the national level, the club’s athletes have positioned themselves well for future competitions and potential selection for higher-level teams. The medal collection serves as inspiration for younger gymnasts and demonstrates the rewards that come from dedication, proper coaching, and a commitment to excellence.

Freestyle Chess at Grootbos

German tech magnate and investor Jan Henric Buettner, now based in Wilderness, is bringing one of the world’s most prestigious chess tournaments — the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour — to the Cape.

Buettner, a pioneering Internet entrepreneur, partnered with five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen to launch the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, a groundbreaking series of Chess960 tournaments that is reshaping competitive chess. The global tour, which has already made stops in Paris, Las Vegas, and Karlsruhe, is regarded as a highlight of the international chess calendar. South Africa’s inclusion as a host country is a first, and insiders say it would not have happened without Buettner’s initiative. Buettner is widely recognized as a pioneer in mobile technology, Internet innovation, and venture capital. Now, he is making his mark on the world of chess. He began his career as a trainee at Axel Springer AG, where he gained early experience in interactive media and telecommunications. In 1992, he launched the world’s first multimedia online service, which laid the foundation for the creation of AOL Europe in 1995.By 2000, Buettner and media giant Bertelsmann had sold their stakes in AOL for $10 billion, after which he became head of AOL Germany. He later moved to the United

States and founded BV Capital, now known as Headline Ventures, a California-based venture capital firm.Between 1998 and 2007, Buettner invested more than $1 billion in emerging technology companies, including GoToMeeting, Groupon, and Sonos. After years living between Hamburg, New York, Santa Barbara, and Weissenhaus, Buettner has settled in Wilderness, a small coastal town in South Africa’s Western Cape.

The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour brings together the world’s top 25 players in a format designed to revolutionise the sport, drawing inspiration from Formula 1’s global tour model.

Unlike traditional chess, Chess960, also known as Fisch-

er Random Chess, features randomised starting positions, removing the advantage of memorised opening preparation. Carlsen has long been an advocate for this format, describing it as a more creative and unpredictable version of the game. Each tour event carries a $750 000 prize fund, with future editions expected to rise to $1 million, making it the richest series in chess history. The tour’s first four legs were held in Germany (two tournaments), France, the United States. The fifth and final event of the 2025 season will take place in South Africa, at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve near Hermanus, from 8 to 11 December.

The Grootbos event will mark the first time South Africans can watch the world’s elite grandmasters compete live on home soil.

Expected participants include Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju.Other likely contenders include Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Levon Aronian, ensuring a star-studded lineup for the tour’s grand finale.

With its mix of innovation, glamour, and global appeal, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour promises to elevate both chess and South Africa’s position on the international sporting stage.

Cricket women debut

In a moment that will be remembered in Overberg cricket history, the Hawston Cricket Club women’s team stepped onto the pitch for their inaugural match on Sunday 19 October, becoming the first-ever women’s competitive cricket team to represent their community.

The historic 20-over clash took place in Robertson, where the newly-formed Hawston ladies faced their opponents with determination and spirit that belied their inexperience at competitive level. Batting first, Hawston showed remarkable resilience by occupying the crease for the full 20 overs, posting a total of 40 runs for the loss of six wickets. For a team playing their very first competitive match, going the distance was an achievement in itself. The standout performance came from 12-year-old Savannah Tait, the youngest member of the squad, who not only top-scored with five runs but also showed exceptional temperament by staying at the crease for an impressive 14 overs.

Her debut knock demonstrated the fighting spirit that characterised the entire team’s approach. Robertson successfully chased down the target in the eighth over of their innings, but not without resistance from the Hawston bowling attack. Kelsea-Ray Temmers emerged as the pick of the bowlers for Hawston, claiming the solitary wicket to fall during Robertson’s innings and providing a glimpse of the team’s potential for future matches.

The Hawston women will return to home soil for their next fixture, scheduled for Sunday 2 November at 10:00 at the Hawston Sportsgrounds. This will mark another milestone as they play their first home match in front of their local community. The club is encouraging the community to support the team in future matches, emphasising the importance of local backing in developing women’s cricket in the area. “Thank you to all the supporters,” the club stated. “We hope to see many more supporters in future.”
