More than 7 000 abalone seized

The ongoing abalone crisis along the Overberg reached alarming new heights on 19 November, as law enforcement scored a major victory while simultaneously witnessing unprecedented brazen poaching activity in the Overstrand.

In a dramatic contrast of events the Overstrand Municipality Law Enforcement K9 Unit intercepted a vehicle carrying 7 217 pieces of abalone worth an estimated R1,4 million in Voëlklip, while just a few days earlier, approximately 20 suspected poachers walked openly across Pearly Beach in broad daylight, fully equipped and unashamed.

During a routine patrol alert K9 Unit officers became suspicious of a driver’s behaviour on 7th Street, Voëlklip. The blue vehicle with CF registration was pulled over, revealing 72 clear plastic bags filled with shucked abalone concealed inside.

“The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)

Hermanus office, resulted in the suspect’s immediate arrest,” Municipal Manager Dean O’ Neill said. “Both the accused and seized abalone were taken to Hermanus Police Station.”

A few days earlier hikers at Pearly Beach witnessed an unprecedented display of audacity, when around 20 suspected abalone poachers emerged from the parking lot, fully equipped with wetsuits and armed with large screwdrivers and other poaching implements. “We have been used to spotting smugglers among the kelp for decades” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous, “but this level of arrogance stunned us.”

The group moved calmly in an easterly direction across the beach, apparently heading towards their poaching area. What initially appeared to be ordinary hikers soon revealed a more sinister purpose when locals realised the group’s true intentions. “Despite calls to police Overstrand Law Enforcement and the Departments of Fisheries and Environmental Affairs’ hotline there was no immediate response

to the brazen beach incident,” the resident said.

Ministerial response to crisis

The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges facing communities along the Western Cape coast, where illegal abalone operations continue to flourish despite law enforcement efforts. The previous DFFE Minister Dr Dion George recently addressed the crisis, emphasising the need for a “science-based and responsible approach” in the abalone fishing industry.

Last Friday he finalised around 150 appeals from fishers seeking exemptions under the Marine Living Resources Act, describing the move as crucial to ensuring “fairness, sustainability, and accountability in the sector. “Many appeals were dismissed after a ‘rigorous verification process’ found several applicants had breached conditions of their previous permits,” the minister declared. “I am deeply aware of the socio-economic realities facing fishers in the abalone sector. However, we must also confront the fragile state of the abalone resource, suffering from years

of overfishing and illegal harvesting. Its recovery demands a science-based and responsible approach.”

Abalone rights reverted to the state in 2014, forcing the government to issue annual exemptions to prevent a total shutdown of the fishery. While these temporary measures helped cushion economic shocks, they coincided with the rise of organised criminal networks that transformed abalone into a high-value commodity in the illegal wildlife trade. The contrast between Wednesday’s successful Law Enforcement operation and the brazen beach poaching incident underscores the complex challenges facing authorities.

As police continue to uncover extensive poaching networks along the Western Cape coast the events of 19 November demonstrate both the progress being made and the enormous scale of the challenge that remains in protecting South Africa’s marine resources from systematic exploitation.

The investigation into the Voëlklip arrest is ongoing, while authorities are investigating the Pearly Beach incident.

In all, 20 suspected poachers brazenly walked openly across Pearly Beach in broad daylight, fully equipped and unashamed.

soos Sandbaai drasties afgeneem.

• Meld enige onwettige besetters in die Overstrand by 028 313 8996 aan of bel die polisie by 028 313 5300.

Municipal row at TWK over senior official

Social media were abuzz over a visit to the Theewaterskloof Municipality office in Caledon on Wednesday (19 November) by officers of the Directorate for Serious Priority Crimes, or the Hawks. In response, the Municipality said: “The matter does not involve Theewaterskloof Municipality and we therefore cannot comment.”

Hawks spokesperson Lt Col Siyabulela Vukubi confirmed officers attached to the Hawks’ George-based Commercial Crime Investigation Unit visited the municipal office on Wednesday 19 November to serve a summons to attend a court hearing concerning a 64-year-old man currently employed by the TWK Municipality.

The summons relates to an alleged contravention of the Municipal Financial Management Act and Municipal Systems Act.

“It is reported that between November 2021 and January 2022 the suspect was employed as Municipal Manager of the Oudtshoorn Municipality,” Vukubi related, “where he acted in a gross and

negligent manner by failing to manage the financial administration of the municipality.

“An investigation revealed he had failed to take reasonable steps to ensure irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure and/or losses were prevented.”

According to Vukubi the accused will appear in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on 12 December.

The accused was asked in 2022 to give reasons why he should not be suspended.

He was dismissed after 13 councillors had tabled a successful urgent motion to remove him from his post. In 2024 the accused was also suspended at a council meeting.

Despite all this the TWK appointed the accused on 29 May this year. Opposition parties agreed they did not agree to the official’s appointment.

“From the beginning his appointment was controversial, but the municipality still believed he was the best candidate,” a member of the opposition party said.

For the ratepayers this was just another proof of an ineffectual munici-

pal council that looked after their own interests only.

“The municipality has never looked after its taxpayers,” one resident said, “on the contrary, we have to fight for our rights while they empty the coffers. Corruption is the order of the day and as long as there are corrupt officials in management positions TWK will always remain under administration.”

Comments on Facebook bear ratepayers’ dissatisfaction with the municipality out. “Everyone is corrupt,” one user said. According to another resident it must make space for younger people to be in manager positions.

“There are young capable people who don’t just want to save for their pensions, but would like to serve ratepayers’ interests, which they have at heart. They should be given a chance.”

The question on everyone’s lips is why TWK had made the appointment, knowing the investigation against the suspect was pending.

The official could not be named until he appeared in court.

‘Fight crime together’

A comprehensive integrated community-safety operation conducted in Grabouw on Saturday night, 22 November, resulted in the closure of multiple illegal liquor outlets and drug dens, while addressing gender-based violence awareness as part of the national 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.

The operation brought multiple stakeholders together, including the police, community policing forum (CPF), APS Security, C-U-LIVE Security, Nuwe Dorp Neighbourhood Watch, Rooidakke (Eagles) Neighbourhood Watch, Old Ridge Neighbourhood Watch, Community in Blue Patrollers, Worcester Road Farm Watch, Pineview Zone 1 Neighbourhood Watch and Bosbou Neighbourhood Watch.

All patrol members wore purple armbands in support of the 16 Days campaign, delivering a clear message that victims of gender-based violence should reclaim their lives by reporting abusers to police.

“The message was clear that victims of GBV should reclaim their lives by reporting abusers to the police,” said Col Winston Coetzee, Grabouw Police Station commander. “Abusers must understand that actions are wrong and punishable by imprisonment.”

The operation specifically targeted substance abuse issues, with teams visiting and closing illegal liquor outlets known locally as “ smokkelhuise ” (shebeens). Officers encountered some stroppy under-age patrons in them.

“What was concerning was the high number of under-age children (boys and girls) we found inside these smokkelhuise,” Coetzee said, “and what was more shocking is that they turned

aggressive by throwing stones at the police vehicle, damaging a window, after they were removed.”

Drug dens were also visited and closed during the operation, with significant amounts of illegal substances confiscated.

The multi-agency effort resulted in the confiscation of numerous dangerous weapons from individuals who were carrying what police described as “murder weapons” intended to hurt or injure others. Officers also removed drunk people and those behaving in a disorderly manner from public spaces for their own safety, relocating them to secure locations.

Coetzee emphasised the importance of an integrated approach to community safety. “We are thrilled to see the positive impact of our integrated approach to community safety. This successful operation showcases the power of collaboration and collective responsibility in enhancing the security of our neighbourhoods.

“The operation has established a foundation for ongoing community-engagement initiatives aimed at maintaining safety and preventing crime in the Grabouw area.”

He confirmed the Grabouw police’s commitment to continuing these collaborative efforts, with plans for future operations with community involvement and focused on crime prevention. “Together we can work towards creating a safer community,” Coetzee concluded.

The Saturday night operation demonstrates the effectiveness of multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing complex community safety challenges, from substance abuse and illegal weapons to gender-based violence awareness and youth protection.

What does a conveyancer do?

If you’re buying or selling property for the first time the transfer process may seem a little overwhelming. We’ve compiled a list of common questions to help you understand the key steps and make the experience a bit less daunting.

1. What does a conveyancer actually do? A conveyancer is a specialised attorney who oversees the legal work involved in transferring property ownership. They ensure all paperwork is in order, manage payments such as transfer duty, clear outstanding municipal rates and lodge documents at the Deeds Office. They ensure legalities and efficiency.

2. How long does a property transfer take? Most property transfers take around eight to 12 weeks, depending on how quickly documents are submitted and how long it takes to get rate clearance from the municipality. Once the transfer is lodged, registration at the Deeds Office usually takes about seven to 10 working days.

3. What transfer costs should I expect?

Several fees are involved in the transfer:

• Transfer duty (if applicable): a tax paid to SARS, based on the purchase price.

• Conveyancing fees: a legal fee for the work done by the conveyancer.

• Deeds Office fees: a registration fee based on the property value.

• Municipal clearance: any outstanding rates or taxes must be paid before transfer. The seller covers rates and taxes up to the registration date, while the buyer is responsible for most of the legal and registration fees.

4. Who chooses the conveyancer?

In South Africa the seller usually appoints the conveyancer. Although the buyer doesn’t get to choose it’s still important for them to

stay in close contact with the conveyancer to make sure all payments, documents and obligations are handled correctly.

5. What to do with unpaid municipal charges

The transfer cannot go through unless a clearance certificate is issued by the local municipality. The seller is responsible for settling outstanding rates and taxes before the property can be registered in the buyer’s name.

6. Can I do a property transfer without a conveyancer? No. Property transfers must be handled by a registered conveyancer. It’s a legal requirement in South Africa. A conveyancer protects both parties by ensuring the transaction complies with all regulations and is properly recorded at the Deeds Office.

7. What happens after transfer registration?

After registration the buyer officially becomes the legal owner. The conveyancer will provide confirmation and the new title deed. From this point the buyer takes full responsibility for the property, including ongoing municipal charges and upkeep.

8. What are buyer and seller responsible for?

• The seller: promptly provides the title deed and clearance certificates.

• The buyer: promptly pays transfer duty (if applicable), registration fees and sign the required legal documents.

9. Why is proper registration so important?

Until the transfer is recorded in the Deeds Office the seller remains the legal owner. If the property isn’t properly registered the buyer isn’t the legal owner and has no rights. Green award for Walker Bay Reserve

Walker Bay Nature Reserve has once again demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship, earning a coveted Green Coast Award from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) for the 2025-'26 season.

The recognition was announced at the national Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards ceremony in Port Alfred recently, co-hosted by Wessa and the Ndlambe Municipality. The prestigious annual event celebrates excellence in coastal management, environmental education, and nature-based tourism across South Africa’s diverse coastline.

The Green Coast Programme, developed by Wessa, specifically recognises natural, less-developed coastal sites that maintain environmental integrity while promoting responsible tourism and meaningful community involvement.

Sites earn recognition based on their demonstrated commitment to conserva-

tion, innovative eco-tourism initiatives, and dedicated protection of coastal biodiversity.

“Walker Bay continues to be one of the flagship provincial reserves and the Green Coast Award builds on the recognition Die Plaat Beach received last year after being named on Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious list of Best Beaches in the World,” said Dr Ashley Naidoo, CEO of CapeNature. Located between Hermanus and Gansbaai, Walker Bay Nature Reserve is not only ecologically significant but also steeped in human history.

Archaeological evidence reveals that Middle Stone Age people inhabited Klipgat Cave between 65 000 and 85 000 years ago, while Khoi and San communities called this area home approximately 2 000 years ago.

Today, the reserve is celebrated as one of South Africa’s premier land-based whale watching destinations. Each year, southern right whales migrate to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay to breed

and nurture their young, creating spectacular viewing opportunities for visitors and researchers alike.

Naidoo emphasised the collaborative effort behind this recognition: “This Green Coast Award reflects the hard work of our staff and partners who conserve one of the Western Cape’s most ecologically diverse stretches of coastline. Recognition like this reinforces CapeNature’s ongoing commitment to conserving our coastal ecosystems while ensuring that local communities benefit from nature-based tourism.

“The reserve’s pristine and picturesque landscape supports an abundance of coastal and marine life, making it a vital sanctuary for biodiversity conservation. Its inclusion in the national Green Coast network underscores CapeNature’s successful approach to balancing conservation priorities with responsible visitor access and environmental education.

Wessas’s Green Coast network has more than doubled in size this season, reflect-

ing a growing national commitment to protecting South Africa’s coastal heritage through collaborative efforts between government agencies, conservation organisations, and local communities. As WESSA approaches its centenary year, having spent 99 years dedicated to “People Caring for the Earth”, CapeNature’s recognition under the Green Coast Programme serves as both an honour and a renewed call to action.

The award reinforces the organisation’s mission of connecting people with nature in meaningful ways that foster environmental stewardship, promote learning, and build shared responsibility for our natural heritage.

The recognition of Walker Bay Nature Reserve demonstrates that effective conservation and sustainable tourism can successfully coexist, creating a model for coastal management that other reserves can follow while ensuring these precious ecosystems remain protected for future generations.

Bantamsklip EIA sparks objections

The planned nuclear plant at Bantamsklip has not only nature lovers on edge, but also residents (“Save Bantamsklip”, Hermanus Times, 19 November 2025).

Rodney Anderson, the chairperson of Save Bantamsklip Association, urged residents of the Overstrand to attend Eskom’s official public Zoom meetings on 1 December and 2 December regarding the proposed 5 200 MW nuclear power plant at Bantamsklip. “Independent experts have consistently shown that South Africa does not currently need new nuclear power to secure its energy future.

“Nuclear developments are extremely expensive, often face budget overruns, long delays, and carry significant environmental, safety, corruption and economic risks. Establishing a nuclear plant at Bantamsklip would permanently alter a pristine coastline, affecting tourism, livelihoods, property values, wildlife, for future generations,” Anderson explained.

According to him Bantamsklip lies on one of the Western Cape’s most ecologically sensitive coastlines, situated between Gansbaai and Pearly Beach and directly linked to the Dyer Island Marine Protected Area.

It is home to endangered fynbos species, unique limestone habitats,

and the rich Dyer Island/Walker Bay marine ecosystem.

Hannes Pieterse, senior advisory consultant of Petrorex, agrees with Anderson: “The Dyer Island Conservation Trust has previously stated on 22 July 2010 that the Bantamsklip site lies within a habitat that is unique on a global scale. The area forms the transition where the cold Benguela Current meets the warm Agulhas Current, making it the closest point to a coastline anywhere in the world where such major ocean systems converge. This ecological mixing zone supports the endangered African Penguins, Great White sharks, globally important kelp forests, critical breeding and foraging habitats, sensitive abalone and linefish populations, important coastal bird roosting sites and a large number of endemic species found nowhere else on earth.

“The area has since 2010 become even more environmentally sensitive, with expanded Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), updated biodiversity classifications, and deteriorating species populations.”

He also stated that the competent authority requires a new, fully compliant Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and fresh public participation process, as required by the National Environmental

Management Act (Nema), given the 15-year lapse since the original process. "In terms of Nema, the EIA Regulations, and the principles of administrative justice, such an aged process cannot lawfully be relied upon.”

Other concerns include the changing of the environmental conditions.

“Since 2010 there have been major shifts in marine and coastal species status (many now endangered or critically endangered), sea-level rise projections, climate-risk mapping, groundwater and aquifer sensitivity, cumulative impacts from development pressures, social and tourism dynamics in the Gansbaai / Pearly Beach region and national coastal zone management policies,” Pieterse said.

“The applicant is legally required to conduct a new public participation process.”

According to the Overstrand Municipality, the notice is about an EIA process informing the public that they can register as interested and affected parties to comment on the proposed project meeting scheduled for 2 December.

Unieke stoomtrein ‘voel nes toeka’

wees.

Vision ‘more than a gift, a miracle!’

If you’ve ever struggled with continuously blurred vision you will know what the gift of sight means.

A Rotary Club of Hermanus project continually helps restore eyesight, and last month saw the 100th cataract operation from the proceeds of its efforts. Called the Ferdi Marais Community Vision Project, in honour of the late Rotarian who inspired it, it is a collaboration with the Overstrand Department of Health’s Eye Clinic and the Radiance Foundation, a Cape Town NPO devoted to eye health.

Rotary’s commitment to improving the eyesight of the local community consists of three phases; the funding of 100 cataract operations, which was completed in October, and the donation of 194 pairs of reading glasses, with more being donated.

The third phase involves service to the community, a founding principle of Rotary International. Rotarians showed up in force to help with pre-screening of patients at the Swartdam public clinic in Zwelihle in May. This not only helps to spot vision problems early, but plays a huge role in saving the limited government funds available for optometric and ophthalmologic specialists.

Dr Johanna Fourie of the eye clinic emphasised the impor-

tance of eye screening, which can help to detect potentially serious vision problems such as cataracts and glaucoma. “It is important to know that after the age of 40, before buying readers, it is a good idea to get your eyes screened,” she said. “Glasses don’t cure everything.”

GLAUCOMA AND CATARACTS

Of the patients Fourie saw in 2024, 34% had cataracts and 30% had glaucoma. The remainder was a mix of different diagnoses, including vision loss due to diabetes. “Glaucoma is the thief of sight,” she said. “Often a patient isn’t diagnosed until they are blind.” It consists of damage

to the optic nerve, often caused by raised pressure in the eye, leading to vision loss and blindness. It can be contained with prescription medication.

A cataract is the opacity of the lens of the eye, a gradual blinding process. The Rotary Club stepped up to help with a backlog of patients waiting for cataract operations. Last year 60 patients, 20 at a time, were taken to the Eerste River Day Hospital in Cape Town, at the cost of R58 000 per 20 eyes. Rotary funded 40 more cataract surgeries this year, most recently in October.

“Last time we had three people who were legally blind,” Fourie said. “When they first come in

they have to come with family, they are wheeled in. And when the come for the follow up they can walk in alone, unassisted.”

She relates stories of grandmothers helping grandchildren with homework for the first time, people being able to walk down the street, drive a car. One of the patients receiving surgery had got married recently.

“Now she can see what a gem you really are,” she teased the husband.

MANY STILL ON WAITING LIST

Dr Fourie’s tales are endless, and never cease to be moving.

Residents struggling with their vision should visit their local

clinic, where the sister will administer an eye test and refer them to a doctor for further assessment. If cataracts are diagnosed, they are booked in to the Overstrand Eye Clinic, where they will be assessed and added to the cataract waiting list.

Currently 69 patients are on the waiting list, some of whom will require separate operations in both eyes. The average waiting period for cataract operations is two years, Fourie said, but placement is based on need or vision loss, not the date of referral. It is vital that patients provide their clinics with up-todate contact details as Fourie phones when an opportunity for the cataract operation arises. “I try to call them three times,” she said. If they don’t answer the phone, they will miss out.

Rotary Club of Hermanus continuously fundraises to keep services such as the Vision Project operating in the future. The Bargain Box, its second-hand shop, is the major source of funding, and is thanks to the goodwill of the community.

Anyone wishing to help with the gift of sight could donate readers, especially 2.5 or 3.00 to the project.

SpecSavers also helps with glasses for children under 12 years of age. “They are totally transformed,” Dr Fourie said of the patients after the cataract operations.

“One woman said it’s more than a gift, it’s a miracle.”

Sonia Jacobs se boek Net Een Traan is vroeg in 2024 aanlyn bekendgestel.

• Sonia se boek is teen R200 beskikbaar en kan by Jaco Koen by 083 394 4425 bestel word.

Summer music at Paul Clüver

Music lovers have something special to look forward to this summer. The beloved Paul Clüver Amphitheatre in Elgin is opening its doors once again, bringing South Africa’s top artists to one of the country’s most magical venues.

From 6 December to 21 February, the open-air stage will host five incredible shows featuring household names like Kurt Darren, Karen Zoid, Jo Black, Elvis Blue, and Nataniël.

Nestled among towering eucalyptus and yellowwood trees, this intimate venue has been enchanting audiences for over 20 years. With just 510 seats arranged in a semi-circle, every spot offers great views and perfect acoustics. Above, stars twinkle through the forest canopy, creating an atmosphere you simply can’t find anywhere else. Located on the Paul Clüver Wine Estate, just 70 km from Cape Town, it’s the perfect escape from the city.

The season starts on 6 December at 18:30 with Kurt Darren. Fans can expect all his biggest hits, including “Meisie Meisie” and “Loslappie”.

Rock queen Karen Zoid takes the stage on 3 January at 19:00, bringing her powerful voice and emotional lyrics to start 2026 with a bang. Jo Black follows on 31 January at 19:00, promising an evening of inspiring music and heartfelt storytelling that celebrates South African spirit.Valentine’s Day gets extra romantic when Elvis Blue performs on 14 February at 19:00. Known for hits like “Rede Om Te Glo” and

bringing South Africa’s top artists to one of the country’s most magical venues.

“Die Hemel,” he’s a crowd favourite who never disappoints.

The season wraps up on 21 February at 19:00 with the incomparable Nataniël. Expect his signature mix of music, theatre, and visual storytelling in what promises to be a spectacular finale. Gates open at 17:00, giving concert-goers time to soak up the farm atmosphere. The estate’s award-winning wines are available for purchase, and the team from renowned Bloem Restaurant will serve delicious food throughout each evening. Overstrand Arts/Kunste (OAK) presents performance by Avigail Bushakevitz (violin) and Jan Hugo (piano) on Saturday 29 November.

Grief, Grace and Gypsies

An afternoon of dazzling virtuosity and heartfelt lyricism awaits music lovers in Hermanus this November, when internationally acclaimed South African artists Avigail Bushakevitz (violin) and Jan Hugo (piano) come together for their first collaboration in a programme entitled Much Ado: of Grief, Grace and Gypsies

The violin and piano recital traces a journey through the emotional and stylistic richness of European music from the classical to the early 20th century.

Opening with Lili Boulanger’s radiant “D’un matin de printemps”, the programme moves to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Much Ado About Nothing Suite, a work full of Viennese charm and cinematic flair.

Mozart’s introspective “Violin Sonata in E minor, K. 304” follows — one of his rare works in a minor key, written during a period of personal loss. Clara Schumann’s Three Romances offer tender lyricism and expressive grace, before the concert concludes with the fiery virtuosity of Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, a showpiece bursting with gypsy rhythms and passion.

Bushakevitz is a Berlin-based South African violinist celebrated for her expressive artistry and technical brilliance. A graduate of the Juilliard School, she

has performed as soloist with major orchestras across South Africa, Israel, and Europe, and currently plays with the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin.

A dedicated chamber musician she has toured internationally and appeared at prestigious venues including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall.

Jan Hugo, also from South Africa, is an award-winning pianist whose career spans Europe and beyond. Trained in Italy, Germany and France, he has performed in leading venues such as Salle Gaveau (Paris), Queen Elizabeth Hall (London) and TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht). A passionate performer on both modern and historical instruments, Hugo recently returned to South Africa as vocal coach at Cape Town Opera after years of performing and teaching in Europe.

This recital marks the debut performance of Avigail Bushakevitz and Jan Hugo as a duo.

Unlike other OAK concerts that usually took place on a Sunday, this performance is sceduled for 15:30 on Saturday 29 November at the Hermanus NG Kerk. Tickets are R250 (R80 for students) and available from René du Plooy at 082 940 4238 or renedup@telkomsa.net.

It’s Suzuki’s street car named Dzire

Back in 1947 streetcars were trams usually running on rails. Tennessee Williams gave his play A streetcar named Desire, the name based on the tram route in New Orleans which served the French Quarter until 1948.

Today we do not have trams or streetcars in South Africa, but we do have town cars made to shine in hectic city traffic. One such car is the Suzuki Dzire. A brilliant smaller car with a big heart, and a big boot.

The Suzuki Dzire can be thought of as a Swift with a boot. So why add a boot you may ask? Well security and that little bit more boot space (378 L) one sometimes needs, are two good reasons. If you are looking for practicality, economy and easy town driving look no further.

This budget sedan offers compact dimensions, fair performance, a pleasant cabin, good outward visibility and a small turning circle. Combine this with good fuel economy, space, even in the rear and a pleasant road manner and you get a Dzire(able) car.

One snag is that the rear seat does not fold down. On the other hand that improves security. The upholstery is light, which makes for an airy

bright cabin but may show dirt much quicker. Fortunately loose and fitted seat covers are available.

There are three models to choose from. The base or GA 5 MT ,manual only, and the

two fancier Gl+ models the manual and the CVT. The GL+ trim grade is well equipped: a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB outlet in front, cruise control, rear parking sensors (and

-camera), multifunction steering, and a full suite of safety kit, including 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, and ISOfix mounting points.

Interestingly all three models come with rear park-dis -

tance control (in conjunction with a reverse-view camera). The 3 pot motor of 1.2 L produces 60 kW and 112 Nm of torque. Not much on paper, but does wonders with the light body, averaging around 5.1 L/100 km for the week I drove the car, mainly in town. You should be able to bring it down even more, on average around 4.5 L/100 km. Driving between towns the consumption could drop to around 4 L/100 km depending on the load and your speed.

The Suzuki Dzire is very keenly priced and a really practical size for small families, reps and perhaps older couples. It is both easy to drive and easy to use the infotainment system and other controls. Like all Suzukis it is well set up especially for city driving with brakes, steering, accelerator and gears well calibrated. The ideal budget sedan.

The Dzire is slightly wider and taller than its main direct rival, the Honda Amaze (R294 900). The Hyundai Grand i10, KIA Pegus and possibly Renault Kwid can also be thought of as competition. Priced from R224 900 to R266 900 the Dzire is an excellent value proposition. Personally I think the CVT model is the one to get. It is just so much easier in city traffic.

• The 5-year/200 000 km warranty and 4-year/60 000 km service plan is very fair.

Golf pro runs 200th free junior clinic

When Bertie Hoffman first started offering free junior golf clinics at The Pro Shop Hermanus he had a simple goal: to give back to his community. Now, 200 clinics later, what began as a modest initiative has blossomed into a cornerstone programme that’s shaping the next generation of golfers along the Western Cape coast.

“Reaching the milestone of 200 free junior clinics is a moment filled with immense pride, joy and gratitude," said Hoffman, reflecting on the programme’s remarkable journey. “What began as a simple desire to give back has grown into something far more meaningful, a commitment to building a lasting legacy for the young golfers of our community.”

Over the years Hoffman has witnessed hundreds of boys and girls take their very first swings at The Pro Shop Express. The transformation he observes goes far beyond technical improvement. “Some arrive with curiosity, others with nerves, but they all leave with newfound confidence and a sense of belonging,” said Hoffman. “Seeing their faces light up when they hit that first solid shot or master a skill they once thought impossible is a reward that goes far beyond the scorecard.”

For Hoffman the clinics represent much more than golf instruction. “They’re about

opening doors, giving young people the chance to grow, to learn discipline, to develop focus and to experience the joy of working towards something meaningful.”

The success of the programme

hasn’t been achieved in isolation. Hoffman credits the broader Hermanus community for making each clinic possible.

Cadet riders to pass through

For more than 40 years military cadets have passed through Hermanus on their 1 400 km cycle from Gqeberha to Saldanha Bay.

The Overstrand Municipality is preparing to roll the red carpet out for one of South Africa’s most remarkable endurance events, as the South African Military Academy at Saldanha’s annual Trans Enduro Race reaches local shores on 4 December. Approximately 200 students and academy staff will make their temporary home at Onrus Caravan Park before embarking on the next leg of their extraordinary journey.

Now in its impressive 43rd year, this multi-day event represents far more than just an athletic challenge. The Trans Enduro Race has evolved into a unique blend of physical endurance, teamwork and community service that embodies the values of leadership and civic responsibility. Participants will set off from Hermanus New Harbour at 08:00 on Friday 5 December, continuing their route towards Bloubergstrand before ultimately returning to their home base at Hoedjies Bay Beach, Saldanha Bay, where they are expected to arrive on 6 December.

The event showcases remarkable organisational complexity, with students working in specialised teams, including land, running, log, signal, media, cycling and sea teams. Each team plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of this ambitious undertaking, which tests both individual endurance and collective problem-solving skills.

Adding a meaningful community dimension, the dedicated community service team will engage in street clean-ups, school painting projects and visits to local retirement homes throughout their journey. These activities support the academy’s Masiza community outreach programme, raising essential funds while fostering connections between the military academy and the communities they serve.

True to tradition, participants will carry a goodwill letter from the Mayor of Cape Agulhas Municipality to the Mayor of Overstrand, maintaining the ceremonial and diplomatic aspects that have character-

ised this event for more than four decades. This gesture underscores the race’s role as more than just a physical challenge; it serves as a bridge between communities, fostering goodwill and cooperation across the Western Cape's coastal municipalities.

Local residents and visitors are warmly encouraged to show their support for these dedicated young people who are pushing their limits in service of their training and community benefit. The public is specifically invited to gather at New Harbour at 08:00 on 5 December to give the participants an enthusiastic send-off as they continue their remarkable journey. For those who encounter the land team along local roads throughout their passage, organisers encourage a friendly “hoot and toot” to boost morale and show community solidarity with these determined endurance athletes.

The Trans Enduro Race stands as a testament to the enduring values of perseverance, teamwork and service that define military training at its finest. For 43 years this event has successfully combined rigorous physical training with meaningful community engagement, creating lasting positive impacts in every town and city along the route. As Overstrand prepares to play host to this remarkable event, residents have the opportunity to witness first-hand the dedication, discipline and community spirit that these future military leaders bring to every challenge they face, and excellence in service extends far beyond individual achievement.

ery session possible,” he noted.

“Their belief in the programme strengthens my own commitment to continually raising the standard and expanding opportunities for the next generation.

“The programme’s philosophy

centers on accessibility, ensuring that every child, regardless of background or financial circumstances, has the opportunity to experience golf's character-building benefits.

“Rather than viewing the 200-clinic milestone as a culmination, Hoffman sees it as a launching pad for continued growth. My goal remains clear: to keep nurturing young talent, to keep inspiring confidence and to keep opening the fairways to a brighter future for our sport.

“If even one child discovers a lifelong love for golf because of these clinics, then every moment invested has been worthwhile. The programme continues to expand its reach, with Hoffman already planning the next phase of development.”

Hoffman vision extends beyond the immediate community, hoping to inspire similar initiatives throughout the region. As The Pro Shop Express Hermanus prepares for its next chapter his message is clear: this is just the beginning. “This milestone marks not an ending, but a beginning, a reminder that the legacy we leave is built one young golfer, one lesson and one act of encouragement at a times. And I couldn’t be more excited for the next 200. The free junior clinics continue to run regularly at The Pro Shop Express Hermanus, with interested families encouraged to contact the facility for more information about upcoming sessions.
