It's not a big police station, yet it covers a large area, has many challenges and always goes the extra mile for the town.
Its hard work and dedication have paid off and the Grabouw South African Police Service Station has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Colonel (Level 12) Station in the Western Cape at the provincial Excellence Awards Ceremony held on Friday 17 January.
The recognition honours the collective efforts of the entire Grabouw Police personnel, including management, commissioned officers, visible policing commanders, detective units, support staff, interns and neighbourhood watches.
Station commander Col Winston Coetzee praised the achievement, calling the award “a testament to your hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment to serving our community with excellence.”
The award recognises stations led by colonel-level commanders and evaluates performance across multiple policing functions, including crime prevention, detective services, community engagement and administrative efficiency.
“Your ability to work collaboratively, tackle challenges and maintain high stan-
dards of teamwork has not gone unnoticed,” the station commander stated in the congratulatory message. “The efforts you have put forth in your duties reflect the highest values of our police station and you have truly set an example for others to follow.”
The Excellence Award Ceremony forms part of the annual Western Cape Police Service’s recognition programme, which honours outstanding performance and service delivery across police stations in the province. Stations are evaluated on criteria including crime reduction statistics, community satisfaction, operational efficiency and professional conduct.
“This achievement not only highlights your individual talents but also underscores the strength of the personnel of Grabouw police station,” Coetzee noted. “I am proud to lead such capable personnel who demonstrate professionalism and a deep commitment to serve and protect our communities.”
The award comes during a period of increased focus on rural policing in agricultural areas of the Western Cape, where police stations face unique challenges including farm attacks, seasonal labour issues, and vast geographical areas to patrol. To page 2.

From page 1. Grabouw’s recognition as the top-performing colonel-level station reflects the coordinated efforts across all departments within the station. This includes the visible-policing commander, detective commander, section commanders overseeing finance, supply-chain management and human resource management as well as shift commanders and frontline personnel.
Coetzee used the achievement as motivation for continued excellence, stating: “As we celebrate this accomplishment let it serve as motivation to continue striving for excellence in our mission to protect and serve our community.”
This recognition places Grabouw police among the province’s top-performing police stations and highlights the effectiveness of collaborative policing approaches in rural communities.
Col Gustaf Tamboer, station commander of the Hermanus police, also congratulated his colleagues on Facebook: “You deserve it, Grabouw police. Congratulations and well done. Sustain your performance and even better it. You made us proud in the Overberg District.”
• AC Patrick Mogodla of the Bredasdorp police was the runner-up in the category Administration Employee of the Year, level 5-7. “We are very proud of him and that we as station can be associated with him,” the station stated.

• Super C sweets, gummy sweets and even lollipops

Summer is fire season in the Overberg, and with the sweltering temperatures it has been a brutal fire season so far, with no signs of abating. Fires have been raging throughout the Overberg, with devastating effects.
Firefighters, definitely unsung heroes, are risking life and limb to safeguard the lives and properties of others. (“Unsung heroes on duty this season”, Hermanus Times, 17 December 2025).
These brave men and women work gruelling shifts, often 48-72 hours at a time, and to sustain this nutrition and hydration are of the utmost importance and it is heart-warming to see communities rally round providing drinks and snacks for the firefighters when the call goes out.
Hermanus Times is launching a drive for non-perishable goods for all the Overberg firefighters. We feel it is necessary to build up a considerable stock of these goods which, once collected, will be distributed to the various fire stations in the Overberg.
Items needed are:
• Water 500ml bottles
• Energy drinks (Powerade and Energade)

• Small packets of biscuits
• Chocolates (Bar One and Lunch Bar, which do not melt so easily)
• Saline eye drops
• Lip balm or small tubs of Vaseline
• Cans of bully Beef (which they can open easily and eat while on duty)
Items such as coffee, tea, sugar and long-life milk can also be donated for the use of the firefighters at their respective fire stations.
We by no means say don’t supply the fire stations with goods when required, but this is a drive to build up emergency supplies for future use. All goods collected will be taken to a central point for later distribution.
This is a heartfelt plea to businesses and the communities support us in this drive. No donation is too small, even a few bottles of water will all add up in the end.

Donations in Caledon can also be dropped off at Ons Winkel, Prince Alfred Road (next to the Pharmacy)

Overstrand Municipality’s Public Safety Directorate seized drugs worth nearly R20 000 and made multiple arrests during integrated crime prevention operations across the municipal area over the last weekend of December.
The coordinated efforts, conducted in partnership with the police and other law-enforcement agencies, resulted in the arrest of three suspects in Hawston for drug-related offences after police discovered 249 Mandrax tablets valued at R14 940, 15 grams of tik worth R4 500 and more than R4 000 in cash in their vehicle. Additional arrests were made in Hermanus, Gansbaai and Franskraal for various offences, ranging from drug possession to driving under the influence.
The operations formed part of the municipality’s visible policing strategy, with officers conducting roadblocks and patrols while simultaneously addressing illegal squatting and public-order violations through clean-up operations and issuing fines for offences such as public drinking and unlicensed driving.
As part of the ongoing crime prevention, the municipal Task Team, K9 Unit and LEAP officers continue to clear out makeshift tents, sleeping gear and cardboard shelters from various

areas in the Overstrand.
This includes the bushes and stormwater pipes, with the aim of reducing the impact of illegal squatting on public spaces and keeping the area clean.
Several fines were issued for various offences:
• A homeless person from Gansbaai, living in a bush in Masakhane was arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon and consuming liquor in public.
• Several individuals were fined for illegal activities, including three for consuming liquor in public, one for urinating in public and others for illegal car guarding.
• A total of three unlicensed vehicles were impounded, and four drivers were fined for not having valid driver’s licences.
“During this integrated
crime-prevention operation an ad hoc fishing-permit inspection was carried out by the municipal law enforcement team and LEAP officers,” Municipal Manager of the Overstrand Dr Dean O’Neill said. “The team covered and inspected several areas, including Vermont, Harderbaai in Onrus, and Plankhuis, Hawston Harbour and Sandbaai.
“An additional inspection was conducted on vessels in Hermanus Harbour, in coordination with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa). They also assisted with a complaint received about a vehicle with CEM number plates blocking a complainant’s car at Voëlklip Lagoon.
“The driver, who was uncooperative and under the influence of alcohol, had his vehicle removed by a sober individual, allowing the complainant to move his car. Please always obey the rules of the road and avoid parking on the wrong side or obstructing other vehicles.
“Overstrand Municipality and its partners remain committed to keeping our communities safe and clean. We believe the visible presence of the law enforcement teams continues to make a difference, sending a strong message to criminals that they will be caught and to motorists that they must keep their vehicles roadworthy.”
Bond switching – moving your home loan from one bank to another – is becoming increasingly popular among South African homeowners. The aim is simple: to secure a better deal on your existing bond, without selling your property.
There are several reasons why you might consider switching. Lower interest rates can translate into substantial savings over the life of your loan, while some banks offer more flexible repayment terms or lower monthly instalments. If your credit score has improved since taking out your bond, you may now qualify for better terms. Bond switching can also be used to consolidate debt or access equity in your home to fund renovations, investments or other financial goals. The process involves two legal

steps: cancelling your existing bond at the deeds office and registering a new one with your chosen lender. A conveyancer or property attorney is required to manage both stages.
It is important to note that switching is not without costs.
Bond cancellation and registration fees, conveyancing charges and possible early termination penalties may apply.

Before making the move, carefully weigh up the costs against the potential long-term savings. Consulting a financial advisor or property law expert can help you decide if bond switching is the right step for your circumstances.
