Couple held at knifepoint Farm attack at Grabouw Ishmael Mabena

farm attack in the Grabouw area left a couple tied up after armed suspects had broken into their home on Saturday night (19 September). They made off with jewellery, cellphones, an iPod and a firearm. The victims were woken by the sound of their bathroom window being opened, which is how the suspects entered. Reports say the attack took place in the Vyeboom area, situated approximately 20 km from Grabouw, beside the Sonderend River. Police confirmed the suspects were armed with knives and a crowbar. According to provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg they tied the victims up before searching the property, taking the items and fleeing the scene. Police had not provided any further information such as whether any suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A RECURRING THEME The Grabouw incident came weeks after Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais condemned a farm attack in Stellenbosch in July. A couple at Neethlingshof Farm was attacked and assaulted on 24 July. In the incident the couple was confronted in their home by three armed assailants also wearing balaclavas and armed with crowbars. The attackers assaulted the couple before stealing items. Both victims sustained serious injuries and were admit-

ted to hospital. Marais said farm attacks remain a concern because of their consequences for victims, farming communities and food security. She said policing efforts in areas experiencing increased criminal activity had been strengthened, with specialised police units deployed to augment local stations where necessary. Marais said this must be considered against ongoing resource constraints within the police, with ageing vehicles and personnel shortages continuing to affect many rural stations covering large geographical areas. “The province has strengthened its support for rural safety through Rural LEAP capacity in Swartland and Overstrand, rural K9 units in Swartland, Overstrand, Mossel Bay and Stellenbosch, and partnerships with 24 rural municipalities that have trained 566 municipal peace officers,” she said. A couple living on a farm in the Koelenhof area, near Stellenbosch, was also overpowered in their home by three men on 4 September. The three suspects were also wearing balaclavas. Similar optics characterised the Grabouw incident, again involving armed balaclava-clad suspects entering a farm property at night, even though police had not indicated whether this was connected to the Stellenbosch attack or any other incident. Police were appealing to anyone with information about the Grabouw robbery to come forward anonymously through Crime Stop or MySAPS.

tuis Simmers’ approval of a R32,8 million housing development. Simmers announced the official sod-turning of the R32,8 million Site A2 housing development on Monday. The project comprises 157 serviced sites, all of which have been completed and handed over. Of them 147 have been approved for simplex Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing units. The remaining sites could provide opportunities through the First Home Finance programme. While the sites have already been serviced, construction of the top structures is scheduled to start in mid-October. Therefore, the project is expected to be completed by the end of April 2027. Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, Simmers said the project was about more than the physical construction of houses. “Today is not really about the shovel we put in the ground [but] about what will rise from this ground,” he said. It is about houses, security, dignity and families building their future in the community they call home.” Provincial government has committed more than R32,8 million to the top structures. The development is also being positioned as part of a longer-term expansion of housing opportunities in Napier. Planning is already underway for Napier Site B, an Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme project which is expected to provide about 400 potential housing opportunities. Bulk water upgrades are anticipated to begin in January 2027 to support future development in the area.

Appeal to help displaced elder A recent storm has forced 80-yearold Shellie Salome Wentzel and her son out of their home in Bereaville after their home suffered extensive roof damage. They are urgently appealing to the community for assistance and donations. Wentzel, affectionately known as Auntie Shellie, and her son who’s often referred to as Boeta, were forced to leave their home and temporarily relocated to the home of her relative Vida Sauls after the storm left the roof damaged and unsafe. According to community project coordinator Henno James Sauls, police assisted with moving Wentzel from the damaged property to safety. However, the arrangement is only temporary. Vida also has health problems and is unable to accommodate and assist Wentzel on a long-term basis. Sauls said efforts had been made to find assistance for Wentzel, including approaching the municipality, but these attempts have not resulted in a solution to the urgent housing situation. “We need hands for roof repairs and general fixing so that Auntie Shellie can live safely in her own home again,” Sauls said.

The appeal is for financial donations as well as building materials, skilled labour and volunteers who can assist with repairing the damaged roof and carrying out other necessary work around the house. Sauls said every contribution would make a difference. LIVE WITH DIGNITY “Any contribution, big or small, will be appreciated,” he said. The goal is to restore the home to a safe and habitable condition so that Wentzel can return to her own house rather than remain dependent on temporary accommodation. Community members, businesses, organisations and individuals who are able to assist are encouraged to contribute towards the repairs or offer their services and materials. “We are reaching out to the entire community for help.” Those who would like to assist can contact Henno James Sauls, Community Project Coordinator, on 073 022 2166. Four hit Grabouw shop, guard shot Four armed balaclava-clad men stormed into a Grabouw grocery shop at closing time on Wednesday 16 September. They shot a security guard before fleeing with cash registers and cigarettes. Grabouw police registered a business

robbery case following the incident, which took place at 18:24 in Dzhivhuho Street. According to police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk the crime was committed as the security guard was closing the door. “The suspects shot at the guard, who

sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand. They then took three cash registers filled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes, and fled the scene in an unknown direction.” The wounded security guard was taken to a nearby medical facility, but the extent of his injuries had not been dis-

closed at the time of posting. Van Wyk confirmed investigations were continuing and no arrests had yet been made. Anyone with information on the incident was kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS mobile application, anonymously.

‘Sex offender’ trial started this week WCED, parents disagree The trial of a 42-year-old married Hermanus businessman accused of rape, sexual grooming and exposing a minor to pornography started on Monday 21 September at the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court. The matter follows an investigation that began with the man’s arrest at his business premises in Hermanus on 9 June 2025. The businessman faces three charges relating to rape, sexual grooming and the alleged exposure of a minor to pornography. Capt Buks Hanekom, head of the Hermanus family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit, confirmed the arrest at the time. During the arrest, police reportedly confiscated underwear and other items from the business

premises as part of the investigation. Whether any of the confiscated items will be admitted as evidence is a matter for the court to determine and should not be treated as proof of guilt. BEHIND BARS SINCE JUNE 2025 The accused has remained in custody in Caledon since his arrest in June 2025, with bail refused at every appearance. He appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on 22 January, with subsequent appearances in the regional court on 25 February and 24 August. The accused continues to plead not guilty. The charges remain allegations and he is presumed innocent unless and until a court finds him guilty.

NEW EVIDENCE REPORTED Police have found new evidence ahead of the trial. The nature of the material and its evidential status have not been made public. Should the material be placed before the court, questions about its admissibility and weight will be determined during the proceedings. The trial will give the State the opportunity to present its case, while the defence will be able to challenge the evidence and present its own arguments in accordance with criminal procedure. With the matter now scheduled for trial in Hermanus, further information is expected to emerge through the proceedings, subject to reporting restrictions and the need to protect the minor’s privacy.

Ishmael Mabena The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has disputed some details reported about an alleged assault at Gansbaai Academia. Moreover, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that the criminal case has not yet been enrolled in court. The development follows an incident at the school on 9 September involving five learners, including a Grade 10 learner who was subsequently left unconscious. In a response the WCED said the incident began as a disagreement between learners . “The incident stemmed from a disagreement between learners while they were playing and subsequently escalated into a physical altercation,” the department said. The five learners were three Grade 8 learners, one Grade 9 learner and one Grade 10 learner. This was confirmed by the department. According to the WCED, the Grade 10 learner was later seen in the school foyer. “The Grade 10 learner subsequently was seen to in the foyer of the school where he expressed discomfort in an ankle and was attended to by staff,” the WCED said. “The school immediately contacted the parents.” Both the department and victim's parents confirm that no weapons were used during the incident. “Reports suggesting that the learner sustained a visible concussion are not supported by the information available to the school at the time of the incident,” the department said. WCED said the school investigated the matter through its disciplinary procedures and held a disciplinary hearing. “The outcome is currently being finalised,” it said. Four learners allegedly involved in the assault have been placed on precautionary suspension while the disciplinary process continues. The injured learner has since returned to school and “has been offered counselling support”, according to the WCED. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation remains ongoing. Eric Ntabazalila, NPA provincial spokesperson, confirmed that the matter has not yet proceeded to court. “Please note that the matter was not enrolled and the docket was returned to the investigating officer for further investigation,” he said. This means that the criminal matter remains subject to further investigation, while the school's internal disciplinary process is also still being finalised.

2026 Boerewors champion crowned Dean De Sousa, a 33-year-old investment actuary from Bryanston in Gauteng, has been named the country’s top boerewors maker at the 34th annual Championship Boerewors finale. He impressed the judging panel with a recipe that balanced flavour and texture while staying true to traditional boerewors. “Winning the Championship Boerewors Competition is an incredible honour. To be named the maker of the best boerewors in the country means having the best boerewors around the braai, and that is something I am extremely proud of. My dad has been a huge inspiration throughout my journey and I’m happy to make him and the rest of my family proud with this achievement,” says De Sousa. De Sousa was inspired by childhood memories of attending Championship Boerewors events with his father, who always encouraged him to cook and experiment with flavours. ‘Kasinomics’ unleashed locally Anna Christensen

“GG’s (Alcock’s) statistics and practical insights provided a completely different perspective on how the formal and informal sectors can interact, collaborate, support one another and create opportunities for growth,” HBC Vice-Chair Antoinette Bronkhorst said.

The Rotary Club of Hermanus hosted author and entrepreneur GG Alcock at an inspirational presentation on building bridges between South Africa’s business sector and the township economy, where he sees huge potential for economic growth. Alcock, whose latest book Kasinomics Unleashed explores the strength of township economies and entrepreneurs, spoke to representatives of all areas of the Overstrand community at the United Church on 16 September. He described townships as large, diverse and highly active economies, driven by entrepreneurs who understand their markets and respond quickly to changing needs. While acknowledging that the industries are largely unregulated, he said the market would require that goods and services be of a high quality. “These guys are proud and resilient,” he told some 150 audience members. “We should be celebrating these businesses and be proud of them.” He called them “circular economies” in which one man may sell bread to various markets sourced from a variety of township bakeries which purchase ingredients from local grocery stores. He cited areas that need

MODERNISING “Our society is modernising, not Westernising,” Alcock told the audience, which included representatives from the Overstrand Municipality and Western Cape government, Rotarians, the Hermanus Business

Chamber (HBC) and the Sandbaai Business Forum. “GG Alcock is well known for his work on South Africa’s informal economy and his argument that our townships and informal areas are engines of economic value, job creation and employment,” mayoral candidate Clinton Lerm said. “He delivered an insightful, energising presentation grounded in experience.” An area that some found troublesome is that Alcock is effectively condoning a “shadow

economy” that doesn’t pay taxes but may draw social benefits. “The contributions far outweigh the growth,” he argued in response to a question, adding that not paying taxes contributes to social stability and economic growth, in the form of fuel levies and value added taxes or VAT. A workshop followed at Mollergren Hall on the areas he sees as having potential for growth, including beauty, prepared food, automobile services, construction and home improvements.

INSIGHTFUL The Rotary Club is strengthening its commitment to areas of youth unemployment and skills development, in line with Rotary International and South African government policies. “The KasiNomics workshop was genuinely insightful and eye-opening,” said Charlotte Mbathat, Hermanus entrepreneur and Rotaractor. “The opportunity for us as young people to be exposed to an event of this calibre is something I am very grateful for,” she said. It took a small step toward tackling the national problem of youth empowerment and employability in June with a pilot programme in which 11 young people built a small wooden structure at the Pebbles Project in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. This came after they completed three months of classroom training in all aspects of construction as part of Pebbles Youth Development Programme. They worked with renowned Cape Town-based Quinton Adams and his “Backyard Varsity Trainers”.

Letters to the Editor Briewe aan die Redakteur Municipal court employee was such a ‘helping hand’ We are law-abiding pensioners from Cape Town visiting Hermanus to see the whales and swim and to visit the Chelsea Flower Show display After the Fire in Stanford. Imagine our shock, after some exciting whale watching at lunchtime on Monday 4 September, to find we had a R1 000 fine for an outdated car licence! This we knew was impossible! We knew we had bought the annual car licence towards the end of April this year and remember placing the new licence disc on the windscreen the same day it was purchased. However, anyone reading this, please take note of our tactical error! We covered last year’s licence with the new updated one. We cannot for sure explain exactly “how” the new licence disc was removed. Possibly after a car service in early May, the car door left unlocked or the locking system overridden? We are old-fashioned and still use our yellow steering lock religiously when parking our car. Perhaps this was the deterrent that made stealing our car too difficult and the licence disc taken as compensation? Anyway, be that as it may, one Cleo Claasen now steps into the picture. He works at the municipal court in Her-

manus. I had to pay my fine there as the ticket had been issued by a municipal law enforcement officer. Cleo turned out to be a real “caring, helpful, kind warrior”! He escorted us to the court office. Then he showed me the form I needed to complete to plea for a reduction of the R1 000 fine. Cleo meanwhile took my outdated licence disc and the fine and went to check on a central computer system whether I had paid for the licence. He returned with an A4 sheet of paper on which my ID number and all past payment dates were printed from the purchase of the new car in 2021. I was perfectly up to date! My fine was reduced to R150, which I promptly paid. I could unfortunately not get a new re-print of my car licence at the Licensing Office as it had been issued in Cape Town. Everyone reading this, be warned! Until the new licence disc is displayed on your front windscreen your car is eligible to be fined should the car be found on the road, or even just parked somewhere, daily. Meanwhile, a big “shout out” and “thank you” to Cleo Claasen. You made our day by being such a “helping hand”. Anonymous visitor

As a parent, I read with a heavy heart about the Grade 10 learner from Gansbaai Academia who was left unconscious for nearly 20 minutes after an alleged assault by fellow pupils. A concussion, a torn uniform, and a six-week ban from sport - this is not "kids being kids." This is violence, and it demands more than a polite press statement. What troubles me almost as much as the attack itself is what appears to have happened afterwards. If reports are accurate, no ambulance was called. No police were contacted. A child lost consciousness on a school field and was moved to reception to wait for his mother - a single parent who had to be tracked down through alternative channels because the contact details on

file did not work. A child with a head injury should never be left waiting without medical assessment. That is not a policy gap; that is a duty-of-care failure. The WCED assures us that the school has a bullying policy and a code of conduct. Policies on paper mean nothing if a concussed child is sent home without so much as a paramedic's check. I am not interested in blame. I am interested in accountability. Every school in the Overberg should review its emergency response protocol today - not after the next incident. Our children deserve to learn without fear, and we parents deserve to send them to school trusting they will be protected. Concerned Parent HERMANUS

Cursed flowers taking over Paterson's Curse is taking over not only the R43 road verges, but also spreading into the surrounding fynbos biome. I contacted Liezl de Villiers at the Environmental Management and Conservation Department to ask if at least the road verges into Stanford could be brushcut before the Stanford in Bloom show hosting Leon Kluge's Chelsea Garden show winning fynbos exhibit. The R43 road verges are however the responsibility of the Roads Department. Fortunately Liezl was able to make this happen. The puple flowering Category 1b invasive alien last year confronted visitors to the show in unchecked full bloom. Many do not know what it is, thinking 'it's pretty', and who would expect such a rampant alien invasive plant at the entrance to Stanford in Bloom?

veroorsaak dat kinders in graad 10 skool verlaat. Ons as ouers moet dit nie toelaat nie en ons moet rekenskap van die skool eis as ’n kind die slagoffer van boeliegedrag is. Daar behoort in vandag se skole nie meer ’n geboelie te wees nie – nie op sosiale media nie en ook nie op die skoolterrein nie – en dit is die skool en onderwysers se plig om dit te keer. Ek voel die departement van onderwys moet meer ag slaan op boeliegedrag in skole en dalk gereeld werksessies aanbied waar ouers, die onderwysers en selfs die leerlingraad opgelei word om teen boelies in skole op te tree. Ekurhuleni horror warning As the nation watches the unfolding tragedy in Ekurhuleni, where the bodies of nine women have been discovered over the past two months, we in the Overberg would be dangerously naive to believe this is somebody else's crisis. Police have not yet confirmed a serial killer, but forensic psychologists have urged that the cases be treated as serial murders until evidence proves otherwise. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the ninth victim. The details are harrowing, and the fear is real But let us not pretend distance insulates us. This year alone, the Overberg has seen the alleged murder of Jenine Hopley, whose body was dumped at the Caledon

Conservationist, horticulturists and those with a bit of environmental knowledge started sounding the alarm at least five years ago. This lack of action doesn't reflect the value of the revered fynbos biome for which the Overberg is celebrated. The problem is beyond hand pulling by residents. It's probably beyond individual farmers. The cost of combating it rises each year. A Rapid Response team from the Overberg municipality, Environmental Management and Conservation Department would be a first recommendation, a specially trained team to work on eliminating the Paterson's Curse from the winter months until flowering time ideal. At Kleinmond Golf Club, junior golf is about far more than learning to swing a club. According to the club, the philosophy is simple: juniors don’t just take lessons – they have fun, follow a clear pathway to improvement, and develop the confidence, performance and character needed to grow as both players and people. The club’s year-round coaching programme is open to beginner golfers aged 9 to 16 and covers every aspect of the game. Training includes putting, the short game, ball striking, driving, specialty shots, on-course strategy, fitness, equipment knowledge and the mental game – a comprehensive curriculum designed to help young players find their talent and steadily level up their skills. But the mission, the club stresses, goes

well beyond golf. Through structured coaching and mentorship, juniors develop honesty, responsibility, confidence, organisation and resilience – qualities that serve them as much off the course as on it. The programme is offered free of charge, with all equipment supplied by the club, removing the financial barrier that often keeps children out of the sport. Sessions take place every Monday afternoon, making it an accessible after-school activity for families in Kleinmond and the broader Overstrand area. The Whalers Athletics Club turned out in force at the Voet van Africa Marathon in Bredasdorp on Saturday 19 September, with podium finishes across four team categories at one of South Africa’s most iconic races. Known as “the Toughest Race with the Warmest Heart,” the Voet van Africa is organised by the Bredasdorp Athletic Club and offers distances from 10 km to a full marathon plus scenic trail runs through the Agulhas region. This year the Whalers entered teams in the 21 km and 42 km men’s and women’s categories, and came home with silver. “We said we were almost done bragging, but we simply had to save this one for last,” the club said of its 21 km women’s showing, which saw four teams place in the top 26 out of a 33-team field. The A team claimed first place overall, led by Elizabeth Maritz (40+, 1:34:32), Susan van Schouwen (50+, 1:53:04), Mariska Erasmus (20-39, 1:53:08) and Rosene Matthee (40+, 1:54:48). The remaining teams placed sixth, 14th and 26th, with septuagenarians Jeanette van Wyk, Elsabe Kotze and Rina Machado among the finishers.

In the 42 km men’s category, the Whalers placed two teams inside the top 12 of a 21-team field. The A team took third: Waylan Arendse (20–39, 3:30:35), Charles Malan (50+, 3:57:59), Liam Temmers (20–39, 4:05:39) and Christo Vlotman (40+, 4:09:10). The B team placed 12th: Shane Mullis (20-39, 4:30:49), Liam Africa (20-39, 4:32:54), Josua Blom (50+, 4:37:32) and Godfrey Gillion (40+, 4:41:50). The 42 km women’s squad also brought bronze home, finishing third out of four teams. Alethia Swart (20-39, 4:02:50), Helen McGuirk (50+, 4:30:57), Lona Siqhaza (20-39, 4:50:34) and Riana Volschenk (40+, 4:57:17) all completed the gruelling marathon distance. The 21 km men rounded out the club’s haul with three teams finishing inside the top 20 of a 26-team field. The A team placed third, anchored by Reinhardt Steyn (20-39, 1:28:39), Philip Fyfer (50+, 1:34:02), Sean Privett (50+, 1:40:24) and Gerd Pieper (50+, 1:49:15). The second team finished ninth and the third team 17th, with Terry Kobus (70+, 2:08:42) and Frank Gillion and Edmund Ferreira (both 60+) proving age is no barrier on race day.

Rolling over 9 decades Bowling-club president gives highlights

or years people have gathered at the bowling green not only to enjoy the game, but also to socialise. This year the Hermanus Bowling Club celebrates its 90th anniversary, with wonderful memories, stories and members who have excelled. According to the club’s president, Hannes Nel, the members are just as proud as he is of the achievements the Hermanus Bowling Club has produced over the years. For example, Dave Buckley was named South African Men’s Senior Master Champion in 2000; in 2018 Sonja Kruger was named South African National Women’s Senior Singles Champion; in the same year Anneke Thrope and Louise Rodiger became the South African Ladies Interdistrict Open Champions; and in 2024 William van der Merwe was named South African u-25 Junior Interdistrict Champion. “These are just some of the achievements our club members have produced,” Nel said. “We have a National Honours board at our clubhouse where we honour people.” As with any other self-perpetuating entity celebrating such a milestone there are amusing stories to tell. Nel recounts the day in 1952 when the “Jack” was arrested. “The incident took place on 31 October 1952. At that time it was illegal to play on Sundays and the club was holding a bowling match. The police arrived to stop the match and arrest the ‘Jack’. The following day the club got the ‘Jack’ back.”

History of Hermanus Bowling club Bowls first arrived in Hermanus in 1924, played on a green at the stylish Riviera Hotel, with another at the Onrust Hotel. Early bowlers used these hotel venues until, in December 1936, a public meeting chaired by RI Love, with J Longwill as secretary, initiated the formation of the Hermanus Bowling Club. The Municipality granted a site in 1937, and the founding committee raised £70 in donations - part of the £170 green cost, which members built themselves with voluntary labour. Women joined in September 1938, forming their own management committee. This dual system endured until 1996, when male and female members were placed on equal footing. Since 2013, women have served as club captains. Growth was steady: a second green was added in 1943, a third in 1973. The clubhouse was extended in 1961, 1970, and 1977. The club has produced numerous Boland provincial players and has twice hosted Bowls South Africa’s Mixed Pairs Finals, earning praise for its greens and hospitality. Two flagship tournaments emerged in the early 1990s: the Hermanus “Classic,” a two-day festival drawing up to 36 teams, and the Business League, a community event where some teams have competed for fourteen consecutive years. The prestigious Ayala tournament - originally sponsored by Ayala champagne from Paris - remains a highlight. With approximately 180 members aged 16 to 94, the club is today the largest in Boland - and the game described as “a ball rolled towards a jack” is most certainly still on a roll.
