It’s the time of the year where many people are eagerly looking forward to a well-deserved summer holiday. It’s the time to relax and spend quality time with family and friends. Sadly, as this is also the fire season in the Overberg region the men and women who work as firefighters are not afforded the luxury of a leisurely summer holiday. Hermanus Times recently visited Caledon’s new fire station which was inaugurated three years ago and spoke to Division Commander Chris Pieterse, who has been a firefighter for 30 years. “It was a great day for Caledon and its community when this fire station opened and we are extremely proud of our station. It is equipped with sleeping quarters for the men who work 24-hour shifts, a kitchen as well as a recreational area. It’s like a second home to them. “An opportunity that crossed my path made me become a firefighter. During the training programme I saw the value of this work and that is where I developed my love for it. I saw the dedication and passion the men have.” Asked about the danger of this line of work, he replied: “Sure, there are

near misses and incidents, but we are not ignorant when it comes to that. We trust one another’s instincts and experience. We become a family. During training we are taught the buddy system: you never leave a guy behind and we look out for each other. There is a different dynamic behind the scenes that determines our safety and ensures that we all get home safely.” The fire station regularly offers educational programs at schools for Grade 1 to 3 learners, teaching them about fire safety. During a fire the public is requested, not to obstruct access for emergency vehicles and to listen to instructions, which are given with good reason. At certain incidents it can happen that firefighters work for 48 to 72 hours to bring a fire under control. Nutrition and hydration are important to keep the firemen going. The public can help by donating non-perishable goods such as water (small bottles), energy drinks and energy bars and snacks (raisins, biscuits and even lollipops), cans of bully beef and chocolates like Bar One’s and Lunch Bars. Eye drops are always needed as well. Communities should be vigilant and report any fire to the control room, which is manned 24 hours per day, to 028 425 1690.

A voice from the cockpit This isn’t just a story about firefighting; it’s a testament to the profound relationships that can exist between humans and the machines they depend on . . . “They call me ‘The Firehawk of the Overstrand’ but that is only half the story. The other half is the man who sits in my left seat, the one I have carried for years now, the one whose heartbeat I feel through the cyclic, the way a dancer feels her partner’s breath. His name is Gregory and together we are the quiet legend. I was born in Marignane, France, but I came of age above the Outeniqua mountains, where the forest meets the sea and the wind never sleeps. My skin is scarred from ember kisses, my belly still remembers the weight of nine hundred litres of water swinging beneath me like a pendulum of mercy. I have flown through smoke so thick the sun disappeared and only Greg’s voice—calm, almost bored—kept us alive: “Ten metres left… steady… hold… drop.” And I dropped, perfect every time, because he asked, because I love him, the way steel loves the hand that tempers it. They say he has almost seven thousand hours since his Instructor’s input to his career. I say I have every single one of them carved into my airframe. I know the exact note my Arriel sings when he pushes me past redline to reach a ridge fire before it crowns. I know the tremor in my skids when he hovers me motionless in thirty-knot gusts while a terrified spotter scurries beneath my disc, trusting me – trusting us – not to flinch. I have felt his pulse slow when the smoke closed in and the mirror of my bucket momentarily went blind, and still he threaded me through hell like a needle through black silk. The park manager once wrote that Greg gives them certainty in chaos. He is wrong. We give them certainty. I am the wings, the eyes, the lungs that breathe rotor wash across burning fynbos. He is the mind, the nerve,

the impossible calm that tells me, “We’ve done this before, old girl. One more load.” And I answer with every ounce of my 2B1 turbine heart: Always. I have worn many hats for him. Fire bucket. Long-line rescuer. Low-level scout over power lines that snake through windy gorges no fixed-wing would dare. Once, I even carried a film director who wanted ‘drone shots with soul’. I gave him soul. I gave him terror and beauty in the same breath while Greg laughed quietly over the intercom and flew me like I was made of glass and lightning. He keeps me immaculate – polished, fuelled, ready. They know the call can come at 05:00, a crackle on the radio, and within minutes my turbine will howl awake, my blades will bite the dark cool morning air and I will climb toward whichever horizon is glowing orange. An hour later I am there— anywhere in the Overberg – because that is what I was built for, and because Greg never lets me be anything less. The world is running out of these pilots who understand mountains the way sailors once understood stars. It is running out of machines willing to fly into the mouth of fire again and again without complaint. But I am still here, parked on a small strip outside Hermanus, rotors folded like a hawk at rest. My tanks are full. My logbooks are thick with smoke and miracles. And in my left seat sits the only man I have ever allowed to truly fly me—the one who treats me not as equipment but as partner, confidante, weapon, saviour. If your forest is burning, if your ridge is lost, if the wind is wrong and the dawn is red, call Emergency. Ask for the Firehawk. Ask for Greg. We will already be turning. Because some fires can only be fought from above. And I was born—forged, really—to carry him into them Every single time. I am ready. He is ready. We are the daylight they send into darkness. Make festive shopping safe The Fidelity Services Group is urging shoppers and businesses to prioritise safety and remain vigilant in this, one of the year’s busiest retail periods of the year. With shopping centres, streets, and online platforms experiencing increased activity, the risk of theft, scams and other security threats also rises. “While the festive season is a time for celebration and great deals, it is also a peak period for criminal activity,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group. “We encourage the public to plan ahead, stay aware of their surroundings, and take proactive steps to protect themselves, their families, and their belongings.” Criminals often target people who appear distracted, whether standing in a queue, turning away from a trolley or juggling shopping bags and mobile phones. Hattingh stresses situational awareness is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent becoming a victim. “You can make a massive difference by paying attention to what happens around you and by being alert,” she said. “If you think someone is following you in a mall or if it feels as if a group of people is intentionally crowding you as you wait to collect an order at a fast-food outlet look for help or ask the peo-

ple to give you some space. Trusting your gut feel is always a good idea.” Parents are also encouraged to talk to their children about identifying suspicious-looking behaviour and to remind them to stay close while in public spaces. Hattingh offers practical safety recommendations for the holiday period: • Leave jewellery and accessories at home; • Avoid a predictable routine by varying your walking to and from mall or office; • Maintain a safe distance from someone asking for assistance and stay alert; • Avoid using ATMs late at night. If necessary choose a well-lit location where a security officer is present; • Leave earphones and reduce distractions; • Be cautious in crowded or chaotic areas where pickpocketing is more common; • Seek help immediately if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable. “No-one likes to think about crime and what it can do to you or a loved one,” Hattingh said. “We also don’t like to have to watch over our shoulders all the time, but it is a sad reality which we cannot avoid. Our wish is that people remember a few basic personal safety precautions and make them part of their daily lives. This will hopefully make a positive difference in keeping everyone a bit safer from crime.”

Co-ownership of property: Opportunity and risk Property ownership remains one of the most reliable long-term investments, yet rising costs have made it increasingly difficult for many first-time buyers to enter the market. As a result, co-ownership has become a popular alternative for those seeking to share the financial burden of purchasing property. But while attractive in principle, co-ownership requires careful planning. Co-ownership occurs when two or more parties jointly own a property in undivided shares, meaning each owner has a legal interest in the whole property rather than a physically divided portion. Parties may agree to hold unequal shares, such as 70% and 30%, which can be formally recorded in the title deeds. If no shares are specified, the law presumes ownership in equal shares. The benefits include reduced bond repayments and shared maintenance costs. Co-ownership can make homeownership achievable, but only with proper legal guidance to ensure clarity, fairness, and longterm sustainability. The Overstrand Municipality has introduced clearly marked bibs for registered car guards in the Hermanus CBD as part of efforts to improve visibility and eliminate unauthorised operators from the area. The new uniform system aims to formalise the car guard service, making it easier for authorities to regulate and monitor who is working in specific locations. While car guards remain independent contractors rather than municipal employees, their roles are now governed by a professional code of conduct requiring them to stay sober and maintain a presentable appearance. Registered car guards will operate daily from approximately 08:00 to 23:00 across key areas including Gearing’s Point, Sharklady, Clicks, Market Square, Red Stalls, FNB parking, Swallow Park,

Church Plain, Harbour Road, Bientang’s Cave, The Marine Hotel, Rossi’s, and behind Jet. Motorists are not obligated to tip, though gratuities remain welcome. Several registered guards with mobile phones and banking accounts now accept SnapScan payments, with the municipality working closely with the platform to prevent unsolicited digital tips. The municipality has banned informal car washing in the CBD for the immediate future. Residents encountering individuals without proper uniforms or identification cards posing as car guards can report incidents to Law Enforcement at 028 313 8996 or 028 313 8980, through the Collab Citizen App or email grantgillion@overstrand.gov.za with location, time, and relevant details. Business owners are encouraged to have staff park away from storefronts to ensure customer parking availability.

Sadtu ‘16 Days’ launch Mitzi Buys In South Africa Gender-based violence (GBV) is so endemic the South African Government has declared it a “national disaster that demands national attention”. Statistics from the first-ever national GBV survey conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council in 2022 revealed more than 35% of South African women had experienced physical abuse in their lifetime. An estimated 95% of rape cases are never reported. This why such campaigns as the annual international 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children are held, in this instance from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). Since the campaign’s inception by the Women’s Global Leadership Institute at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA in 1991 more than 6 000 organisations from 187 countries are now participants. GBV AT SCHOOLS The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) held its Boland Regional “16 Days of Activism” launch at the Victoria Hall in Caledon on 25 Novem-

Shannon Smith, the union’s regional gender convenor for the Boland Region, which covers the education districts of the Overberg and the Cape Winelands, told Hermanus Times: “Seven of our region’s branches, namely Boland College TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), Overberg, Hermanus, Grabouw, Ceres, Langeberg and Paarl are present today. Ouers moet verantwoordelik met alkohol omgaan en te alle tye in die beste belang van hul kinders optree,” sê September. Dog owners face particular challenges at Blue Flag demarcated areas located at beach entrances, where no alternative access points exist. The municipality requests dog walkers “briskly walk on the road or lagoon side of the beach, with their dog on a leash” until reaching designated dog-walking areas. Once in approved zones, dogs may

be walked on-leash, while two specific “green zones” at Grotto and Kleinmond permit off-leash activity within clearly marked boundaries. On all other beaches and public spaces, including the popular cliff and coastal walking paths, dogs must remain leashed at all times. Appeal to holidaymakers, beachgoers to be vigilant As the school summer holidays begin the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is wishing South Africans a safe and enjoyable festive season while urging everyone to stay alert in and around water. The organisation said it hoped families would take time to relax and reconnect, but warned extra caution

Over the last three weeks NSRI crews have increasingly responded to emergencies, many involving holidaymakers and children. “Public vigilance, lifeguard services and community collaboration continue to save lives every day,” said NSRI Communications Manager Andrew Ingram. He noted that the NSRI’s Pink Rescue Buoys have already been used in at least 230 rescues. The most recent involved a father and daughter at Brenton-on-Sea near Knysna. “The importance of public rescue equipment and emergency flotation cannot be overstated,” Ingram said. NSRI’s Holiday Water Safety Tips: • Avoid alcohol when swimming or boating. Alcohol affects judgment and increases the risk of drowning. If you’re drinking, ask a sober adult to watch children near water. • Always supervise children. Drowning is silent and fast. Keep children within arm’s reach and avoid distractions such as your phone. • Swim where lifeguards are on duty. Stay between the flags. Most people cannot identify rip currents. If caught in one, float, wave for help and swim sideways out of the current. If someone else is in difficulty, call for help, throw them something that floats, and only attempt a rescue if you have flotation and are confident in your ability. • Save emergency numbers. Dial 112 from any cellphone for emergency services. The NSRI Emergency Operations Centre number is 087 094 9774. Save these numbers before travelling. • Take extra care during summer rain and flooding. Avoid crossing fast-flowing rivers on foot or in a vehicle. Hermanus Times caught up with Shiloh last week, fresh from a talk at St Thomas Church (Stanford in Bloom) on the life of Leonard Cohen, the latter was invited to his birthday some fifteen years ago. August, Shiloh launched his

Art walk full of surprises Mitzi Buys The weekend of 28 to 30 November saw artists and art lovers alike flock to Greyton for the ninth Greyton Art Walk. There was a distinct festive atmosphere throughout the village with visitors browsing the various venues displaying art, which included the main exhibition area in the church hall, restaurants and coffee shops as well as many art galleries, where artists at work could be observed. Hermanus Times spoke to artist Chris Buchner who exhibited his unique ceramic medallions at the Art of Compassion Gallery. “I originally trained in Fine Art in painting and drawing. I did a total of nine years of formal training and eventually managed to get my degree in Fine Art in

Ireland at the age of 40. I wanted to be an artist since I was 15 years old, but I struggled with painting and drawing. “My wife, a ceramic artist, has been doing ceramics for a long time. I always liked drawing and I just shifted it into a ceramic medium. These medallions are not all perfectly shaped and I like that I get slightly asymmetrical shapes,” said Buchner. When asked, Buchner said that the life in and around the town of Calitzdorp, where he lives, inspires his work. He also mentioned that his work received very positive feedback. On Greyton Art Walk’s Facebook page they stated that this was one of their most successful events. 55 artists had a platform to exhibit their work, selling 85 original artworks. Five of the artworks sold reached a total of R80k.

Daar was ook geleentheid vir lede om hul nuutste handewerkitems tydens ’n “wys-en-vertel” aan lede voor te stel. Try easy-to-make Christmas dishes pot, add the cream and pepper.

Gone are the days of Christmas cooking stress! Food Lover’s thoughtfully designed hamper meal celebrates the season's finest ingredients while keeping preparation surprisingly simple. From show-stopping mains that’ll have everyone asking for seconds, to perfectly paired sides that complement every bite and sweet treats that provide the perfect finale, this collection brings restaurant-quality festive dining right to your home table. Food Lover’s three-way Christmas Hamper GAMMON WITH A CHERRY COLA GLAZE For the gammon: 1 onion, chopped 3-4 carrots, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped12 L water to cover gammon For the sauce: 500 ml (2 cups) fresh cream 2 large white onions 2,5 ml (½ tsp) black pepper 120 g Food Lover’s fresh cherries, stems removed 1 x 2 L Food Lover’s cola soft drink 500 ml (2 cups) gammon stock or water 1 whole cinnamon stick 3 x dried allspice berries 30 ml (2 Tbsp) Food Lover’s salted butter Pinch of salt Serves about 10-15 Direction: Place the smoked gammon in a large sauce pot. Add onions, carrots and celery stalks. Bring the gammon up to a light simmer and cook for 2-3 hours. While the gammon is cooking start preparing your glaze. Once the gammon has cooked, allow to cool to touch. Remove the netting gently. Remove the

skin from the gammon, leaving the fat layer underneath behind. Score the fat and then glaze with cherry cola glaze. Preheat the oven to 200 °C and roast the gammon for 25-30 minutes, glazing in between. Slice and serve with remaining glaze. For the glaze: Add the cherries, cola, water/gammon stock, cinnamon stick and allspice berries to a sauce pot and bring the ingredients to a boil. Allow to cook over a medium heat for 1 hour or until the sauce has reduced by half and can coat the back of a spoon. Strain the sauce through a sieve, pressing the cherries to make sure all the juice and pulp gets included in the sauce. Stir the butter into the sauce and then use the glaze to glaze the gammon with and serve the remainder on the side when serving. CORNED BEEF WITH A ROASTED ONION AND PEPPER SAUCE

For the corned beef: 125 ml (½ cup) Food Lover’s brown vinegar 1-2 dried bay leaves 5-7 pepper corns Pinch of salt Directions: Place the corned meat into a large pot, cover with water and vinegar, bay leaves and pepper corns and allow to simmer on a low heat for 2-3 hours, then insert a fork/skewer into the centre easily. Slice up once ready and serve with the roasted onion and pepper sauce. For the sauce: While you prepare your roasts in the oven wrap the onions whole with skin on in foil and place in the oven to roast for 25-30 minutes until soft. Remove the onions from the foil and remove the outer layer of brown skin and chop off the root base. Place into a blender along with 125 ml water. Blend until smooth. Add the blended onions into a sauce-

BEEF TONGUE WITH A CHRISTMAS SPICED SWEET MUSTARD For the tongue: 1 onion, cut into ¼ pieces 2 bay leaves 5ml (1 tsp) salt For the sauce: 40 g hot English mustard powder 385 g (1 tin) full cream sweetened condensed milk 125 ml (½ cup) white wine vinegar 125 ml (½ cup) water 2 large eggs 1 whole cinnamon stick 2 star anise 2 whole cloves 2,5 ml (½ tsp ) ground allspice Pinch of nutmeg Pinch of salt, to taste Directions: Place the tongue into a pot filled with water, enough to cover the tongue.Add the onion, bay leaves and salt. Allow to boil for 2½to 3 hours until the outer skin begins to peel off. Remove the tongue from the broth and allow to cool to touch. Peel off the skin off the tongue, slice and serve along with the Christmas Spiced Sweet Mustard. To prepare the sauce: Combine all the ingredients, except for the spices, using a whisk and then add to a sauce pot. Add the spices and then on a low heat allow the sauce to thicken, while whisking/ stirring. (This is important as you don’t want the eggs to scramble) Once the sauce thickens, remove the whole spices, pour into your serving jars and pop into fridge to allow to cool. Allow to simmer over a low heat until thickened. Season to taste before serving with your prepared sliced corned beef. – Food Lover’s Market

The Jan Ellis Pudding story Jan Ellis pudding is basically a baked sponge pudding that’s covered in a creamy syrup. Jan Ellis was the most capped Springbok rugby player at his time (he played flank) when he retired, with thirty-eight caps to his name. Huisgenoot phoned Jan’s wife Hyla in Bronkhorstspruit to trace the recipe’s origins. She got the recipe from a friend, who got it from her Aunt Vossie of Stellenbosch. They first named the pudding Vossie, but one day someone phoned to ask for Jan’s favourite pudding, for publication. She gave the recipe

for Vossie, but when it appeared it was called Jan Ellis’s pudding. Now everyone knows it by this name! Ingredients: 3/4 cup of self-raising flour 1 egg 1 Tbsp apricot jam 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 Tbsp softened butter a pinch of salt a pinch of ground nutmeg 1 tsp grated orange zestFOR The syrup: 1/2 cup boiling water 1/2 cup cream

1/2 tsp vanilla essence 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 Tbsp grated orange zestMethod: Dissolve the baking soda in the milk. Mix all the other ingredients together well, then add the milk and mix well until smooth. Pour into a baking dish and bake for 30-40 minutes at 180°C or until a skewer comes out clean.Place all the ingredients for the syrup in a small saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat. Serve each portion with a generous helping of syrup and some custard.

Aan die woord was Willie Aucamp, die nasionale woordvoerder van die Demokratiese Alliansie (die DA), en Jan de Villiers, die parlementslid vir die Overberg. De Villiers, ’n deurtrapte Stellenbosser, is deur die voorsitter, Danie Schutte, eerste aan die woord gestel – nadat die Kaap Agulhas-munisipaliteit (KAM) se (DA-) raadslid vir wyk 5, dr. Andries Eksteen, die aand met gebed geopen het. “As iemand voor die 2024-nasionale verkiesing vir my sou gesê het die DA sou met ses kabinetsposte beloon word, sou ek gedink het hy is van lotjie getik. Maar dit het gebeur. So iets was ongehoord in die Suid-Afrikaanse politieke geskiedenis. Theo de Jager van die Suider-Afrikaanse Agri-Inisiatief (Saai) ingesluit. Volgens Aucamp was hy ook genooi om deel van hierdie groep te wees, maar hy het dit van die hand gewys. “Sulke aksies maak dit vir ons problematies in die RNE.” Tog erken hy op ’n vraag uit die gehoor dat die departement van internasionale betrekkinge (“Dirco”) tans in ’n benarde posisie verkeer. Kommentators is dit eens dat Suid-Afrika se geheul met Amerika en Israel se vyande sake op ’n diplomatieke vlak bemoeilik. IS DIE DA NOG ’N WIT PARTY? Op ’n vraag oor of die DA nog as ’n wit party beskou moet word, het hy gesê die DA is ’n volwaardige veelrassige party wat valslik daarvan beskuldig word dat hy “weer apartheid gaan terugbring en boonop (Sassa-) toelaes gaan stop. “Ons steun onder bruin en swart mense onder die huidige DA-leierskap

is nou veel hoër as byvoorbeeld onder Mmusi Maimane.” Die voorsitter, Danie Schutte – self ’n voormalige minister van binnelandse sake – het ’n knuppel in die duiwehok gegooi toe hy lostrek met ’n stelling dat daar twee olifante in die vertrek is: Die MK-party en die radikale swart stem, verpersoonlik deur die Ekonomiese Vryheidsvegters (EFF). Schutte se sienswyse is dat dit die MK was wat die ANC sodanig verswak het dat dit die DA se posisie versterk het. Dit het tot ’n lewendige bespreking gelei, waarvan die konsensus was dat die MK ’n etniese Zoeloe- nasionalistiese party is, maar nie noodwendig radikaal nie. VONNIS WAG VIR MALEMA Beide die MK-party en die EFF se steun berus op hul leiers se charisma en peroonlikhede, sê die DA-woordvoerder – Jacob Zuma vir die MK en Julius Malema vir die EFF. “Jacob Zuma, byvoorbeeld, is ’n absolute strateeg; Julius Malema, weer, staar in Januarie 2026 ’n vonnis in die gesig.” Oor die Inkatha Vryheidsparty (die IVP) huldig Aucamp die mening dat die party homself herposisioneer het ná die afsterwe van sy jare lange gerespekteerde leier, Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Van die uitsprake wat uitskiet, is die volgende: • Die DA wil die gematigde steun aan alle kante van die kleurspektrum laat groei. • Die DA het nog nooit soveel aansoeke vir lidmaatskap van bruin en swart mense ontvang nie. • In die 2026- plaaslike verkiesing sal Helen Zille beheer oor Johannesburg oorneem, Cilliers Brink van Pretoria (Tswane) en Retief Odendaal die Nelson Mandela Metro.

ecember’s arrival signals the countdown to one of the world’s most punishing maritime challenges, the Trans Agulhas. From 28-31 December brave souls will pit themselves against the unforgiving South African coastline in what’s dubbed the “World’s Toughest Inflatable Boat Challenge”. “This year brings an exciting twist,” declared the Overstrand Municipality, emphasising the event’s unique blend of human determination and mechanical precision. “Weather permitting, the legendary rubber ducks will make their December 31st pit stop at Kleinmond’s pristine Blue Flag beach instead of the traditional Hawston checkpoint. The dramatic change promises to add new dimensions to an already gruelling test of endurance.” It truly is a challenge like no other. With the Kleinmond NSRI ensuring safety protocols, locals and visitors can safely witness this extraordinary spectacle. Hermanus Times spoke to two locals who are going to participalte in this year's race: Team 75: pilot Dieter Blignaut and co-pilot Marius van Dyk. • What’s it like representing Hermanus in such a prestigious South African race? It’s an honour especially because one of the founding members of the Trans Agulhas is from Hermanus, Sparks Esterhuizen, I knew Sparks from a young age so it makes its really special. • How has the local community reacted to your participation in the Trans Agulhas Challenge? Ninety-nine percent of the community are supportive and

‘Hermanus Times’ speaks to local Team 75 pleased that the race still has pilots from Hermanus competing. This year we have three boats from Hermanus competing. However, there is a small percentage of the community that complains and hints that we don’t care about the sea or sea life, but we do abide all the sea laws and are respectful of sea life. EXPECTATIONS FOR TRANS AGULHAS • For those who don’t know, can you explain what the Trans Agulhas Challenge involves? The Trans Agulhas comprises two events. Firstly, the endurance (from town to town) and secondly, surf circuit racing, which happens after all the boats have reached the days destination. The race takes place over four days; day 1 is 188 km, day 2 96 km, day 3 160 km and day 4 220 km. • This race covers 700 km over four days starting on 28 December from Plettenberg Bay. What are your expectations? Our expectations this year are high, we changed our mindset of racing from riding to enjoy to riding to win. The past four races we podiumed three times, with a first overall on the last event so we going for a podium finish. • Which of the four stages/days are you most concerned or excited about? Each day has its unique challenge. Day1 is a difficult navigating day having several beach stops, day 2 has a notorious beach stop at Gouritsmond, day 3 is known as the mind breaker because of the far distanc-

es between stops, and by day 3 the body and equipment are showing fatigue. Day 4 is our preferred water, our home water running from Struisbaai to Strand, so the pressure is on to perform. • How long have you been preparing for this challenge? I have been racing for four years; this is my third Trans Agulhas and the preparation hasn’t stopped since the day I started. Generally all competitors put all their focus into preparing from August. • How do you train for navigating the challenging conditions along the South African coast? Studying the weather patterns plays a key factor in how to set up one’s boat, as the set-up drastically affects the way the boat performs on the water. Spending time in the boat in all weather conditions with one’s co-pilot and equipment is the best way to learn what set up is required for different sea conditions. • What’s your background with powerboat racing or inflatable boat handling? Our family has a rich boating background stemming from waterskiing. A few years ago I opened an inflatable boat-repair business, which has developed into manufacturing and building of inflatable boats and race boats. • What are you most nervous about as you approach the race? Not achieving personal goals, injuring myself or my co-pilot during the race. • How do you plan to handle the physical demands? We drink a lot of water,

pray and wing it. We’ve done all the training and prepping possible. • What’s your strategy for completing all 4 stages successfully? My main strategy is to get into the leader pack each day, try to coast until the last 20 km until each day and then floor it for the last 20 km. • Who is supporting you in this endeavour (sponsors, family, local businesses)? My sponsors are Chaotic Inflatables, Thundercat Marine, Pro Oil SA and Virgo Auto Clinic, family and friends • How has the local Hermanus business community responded to your participation? Unfortunately, there is very poor local enthusiasm due to the race not having an overnight stay in Hermanus as in previous years. Local business feels it’s not getting enough exposure as one can’t see the boats as they pass Hermanus. • Any advice for other locals who might be inspired to take on this challenge? If you feel you want to do it, do it! Any sport now days has a high startup cost but if it’s a passion it’s well worth the money and hard work you put into it. • How do you hope this experience will change you? Hopefully not give me to many more grey hairs as the event as a whole is extremely stressful for a small team, which does a lot of self-managing, self-maintenance. I hope to ride my best for my team and our sponsors. • Any funny or memorable moments during your training? We always train with more than one boat for safety reasons and obviously the race is always on so every time one’s friend or fellow racer is beaten there’s a story. . . # sensitief
