Dít is die woorde van Knoflokskraal-inwoners nadat die nasionale minister van openbare werke en infrastruktuur, Dean Macpherson, verlede Dinsdag gesê het maatreëls gaan daargestel word om reg en orde by die Knoflokskraal langs die N2 tussen Botrivier en Grabouw te herstel. Wat hulle verder grief, is die feit dat Macpherson op die mediakonferensie gesê het bewerings van dwelm-verwante aktiwiteite, intimidasie van nooddienste, misdaadsindikate en onwettige grondverkope vir so min as R1 500 doen die ronde.

“Dit alles is ’n bewys dat hulle nie eens die moeite doen om te kom kyk wat hier aangaan voordat hulle sulke bewerings opper nie,” het een van die inwoners gesê.

“Ons wil in vrede hier woon, ons grond, wat histories aan ons behoort, bewerk en ons kinders hier grootmaak sodat hulle ook ’n erfenis kan kry.”

Nog ’n inwoner vertel hy het in 2020 daar aangekom “toe hier nog niks was nie”. Volgens hom is Knoflokskraal nie begin vir behuising nie, maar om te boer.

“Ons hoofdoel is om selfonderhoudend te wees. Ons wil die grond bewerk en daarvan lewe ... Ons is geregtig op water, want dit is wat die grondwet vereis, maar verder kyk ons in niemand se oë vir aalmoese nie,” het hy gesê.

Die departement van openbare werke en infrastruktuur, wat die wettige eienaar van die grond is, het ’n driepuntplan daargestel om die situasie die hoof te bied. Na bladsy 3.

Road safety is important for TWK

Easter weekend is traditionally one of the busiest weekends on South African roads, as many people take the opportunity to spend a relaxing long weekend with family and friends.

Before the start of the Easter weekend Theewaterskloof Municipality (TWKM) conducted a road safety operation, which included roadblocks in Caledon as well as surrounding towns in the TWKM area. This was done in collaboration with traffic services, law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire services and the South African Police Service to ensure road safety for travelers during this busy period.

A short programme, attended

by various municipal dignitaries, was held in front of the municipal town office before the start of the safety campaign.

Apostle Jacques Brinkhuys opened the programme with

prayer, asking for protection and guidance for all officers during this busy period.

Director of Community Services, Wilfred SolomonsJohannes, said: “This launch

signifies our readiness and coordinated approach in enhancing visibility, strengthening law enforcement operations and promoting compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.”

He called upon all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations and to prioritise responsible behavior. He extended his sincere appreciation for their continued dedication and professionalism.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Clayton said that during her long nursing career she had seen the devastating effects of reckless driving, often ending with the loss of lives. She urged motorists to not drink and drive and to ensure that all occupants of a car wear their seatbelts.

Athleigh Africa, acting chief of law enforcement, thanked the officials for their presence, guidance and inspiring words of encouragement.

She also thanked all officers present for their unwavering commitment to excellence and public safety.

Operations, priorities in draft budgets are not surprising

The Theewaterskloof Municipality, Overstrand Municipality and Cape Agulhas Municipality recently released their draft budgets for the next financial year. Residents now have the opportunity to have their say on the budgets.

THEEWATERSKLOOF MUNICIPALITY ELIMINATES R103M DEFICIT, SHOWS R4,7M SURPLUS IN DRAFT 2026-'27 BUDGET

Theewaterskloof Municipality has achieved a remarkable financial turnaround, transforming a R103 million operating deficit into a R4,7 million surplus in its draft 2026-'27 budget.

Executive Mayor Lincoln de Bruyn announced the milestone, describing it as “a decisive step forward in the financial recovery journey” following a rigorous review process that began in November 2025.

The municipality, which has been operating under a Financial Recovery Plan’s “Rescue phase”, is now ready to transition to the “Stabilisation phase”, focusing on strengthening financial management and improving operational efficiency.

Despite the positive turnaround the budget reflects ongoing financial constraints.

Total operating revenue is projected to decrease by 6%, to R59,4 million, compared to the previous year. Revenue is expected to recover modestly over the medium term, with 3,5% growth in 2027-’28 and 3% in 2028-’29.

Operating expenditure has been reduced to R895,4 million, down R24,6 million from the prior year, while the capital budget amounts to R41,7 million – a significant reduction to ensure sustainability.

To maintain service delivery amid rising costs, moderate tariff increases have been proposed: 5% for assessment rates, 8% for water, 4,5% for sanitation, 11,92% for solid waste, and 8% for electricity, subject to regulatory approval.

“While challenges remain, this budget demonstrates our collective resolve to restore financial stability and build a sustainable future for all residents,” De Bruyn stated.

The budget aligns with the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan and government priorities, directing resources to key developmental objectives and essential service delivery.

OVERSTRAND UNVEILS R242,7 MILLION CAPITAL INVESTMENT PLAN

Overstrand Municipality has announced an ambitious R242,7 million capital budget for 2026-’27, with water and electricity

infrastructure taking centre stage in the largest investment programme.

The draft budget reveals a strategic focus on essential services, with water projects receiving the lion’s share at R74,7 million, followed closely by electricity infrastructure at R63,9 million. To fast-track service delivery the municipality is funding more than half these projects through loans, reflecting the urgency of addressing ageing systems and climate-related challenges.

The centrepiece of the programme is the R45,9 million refurbishment of the Buffels River Water Works, a critical project to secure water supply across the region. This investment underscores the municipality's commitment to boosting water security.

Electricity infrastructure receives substantial attention with R30,1 million allocated to electrifying low-cost housing areas, addressing a long-standing service delivery challenge. An additional R20,1 million will fund upgrades and replacements of electricity infrastructure throughout Overstrand, while the new Still Street 66 KV/11 KV substation in Ward 3 receives R10 million.

Road infrastructure improvements include R12,7 million for the rehabilitation of Angelier Street in Ward 4 and R8,2 million for road upgrades and new sidewalks in Proteadorp (Ward 9). Water and sanitation receive further investment with R12,6 million earmarked for replacing ageing water pipes and R10,7 million for upgrading pumpstations and rising mains. Wastewater management is allocated R19,7 million overall. Public safety infrastructure gets a boost with R7,5 million for new vehicles, while R7,1 million supports low-cost housing services across the municipality.

Residents can review the complete draft budget, available on www.overstrand.gov. za under Documents \> Budget. The public-comment period runs until the end of April, with ward-based roadshows scheduled for mid-April.

These community-engagement sessions offer residents the opportunity to understand how these significant investments will impact their daily lives and contribute to the municipality’s long-term development goals.

CAPE AGULHAS CHARTS R587 MILLION COURSE

Cape Agulhas Municipality has tabled a R587 million operating budget for 2026'27, prioritising essential infrastructure upgrades while maintaining fiscal discipline in challenging economic conditions. The draft budget, featuring a capital programme worth R58,9 million, demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to improving service delivery across water, electricity, and waste management systems throughout the southernmost tip of Africa. Water infrastructure takes precedence with significant allocations including R5,4 million for the Bredasdorp Wastewater Treatment Works upgrade and R4,6 million for a new sewer pump station in Napier. Additional projects include R1,6 million for Struisbaai WWTW rehabilitation and R1,5 million for new boreholes.

Electricity improvements receive substantial investment with R2.4 million allocated for electrifying informal settlements and R1,8 million for installing mini-substations and ring main units. The municipality has also budgeted R1 million each for replacing overhead power lines and renewing substation switchgear.

Environmental sustainability features prominently, with R1,55 million for landfill upgrades across towns and R500 000 for waste drop-off points and wheelie bins. Despite economic pressures, the municipality projects operating surpluses throughout the three-year budget period, with employee costs maintained below 37% of operating expenditure, well within the recommended 40% threshold.

Tariff increases remain modest and linked to inflation at 3,7% for water, sanitation, and property rates. Electricity tariffs will increase by 9,01% following national energy regulator Nersa’s approval.

The municipality plans to establish a Revenue Enhancement Committee to address collection challenges, particularly for basic services. It aims to improve financial sustainability while reducing dependence on intergovernmental transfers.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The draft budget aligns with the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan and includes provisions for community participation in planning. It emphasises improved asset management with 8% of property, plant and equipment allocated to repairs and maintenance.

The public comment period for the draft budget is currently open, with residents encouraged to engage with the proposals that will shape service delivery across Cape Agulhas for the coming year.

Partnership shows results

Crime declining in Hermanus is proof of joint efforts between neighbourhood watches, security companies and the police.

This is according to Col Gustaf Tamboer after he released the yearly crime picture for Hermanus for the 2025-'26 financial year.

"Hermanus recorded a significant crime reduction of 4,9% for the 2025-'26 financial year, building on the previous year's 2,6% decrease, according to the latest police statistics. The improvement represents the second consecutive year of crime reduction in the coastal town, with authorities crediting partnership policing initiatives for the positive trend," Tamboer stated.

According to him contact crime, which includes serious violent offenses, decreased by 1,7% overall. Murder cases dropped by 10%, while attempted murder plummeted by 35,4%. "Aggravated robbery fell by 29,7%, common robbery by 8%, and sexual assault by 20%."

However, according to Tamboer concerning increases were recorded in assault with grievous bodily harm (up 15,9%), common assault (up 1,8%), and rape cases (up 11,3%).

Property-related crime showed the most dramatic improvement, falling by 24,2%. "Residential burglary decreased by 20.2%, while business burglary dropped by 40,7%."

He also stated that vehicle theft fell by 48%, theft from vehicles by 22,6%, and

stock theft was eliminated entirely.

"Contact-related crime decreased marginally by 0,4%, with arson cases down 28,5%. Malicious damage to property increased slightly by 0,5%.

"Other serious crimes rose by 1% overall, driven by increases in commercial crime (up 5%) and shoplifting (up 5.6%)."

Statistics also show that general theft decreased by 4,6%. "Crimes dependent on police detection increased by 32,7%, largely due to more arrests for drug-related offenses (up 31,8%) and driving under the influence (up 53,5%)."

Other good news is that illegal firearm possession cases dropped by 42,8%, house robberies fell by 34,6% and business robberies by 33,3%, contributing to an overall 33,3% reduction in aggravated robbery subcategories.

Dangerous weapons offenses increased by 3.3%, while illegal liquor sales rose by 42%.

"Police acknowledged room for improvement despite the overall positive trend, stating that amendments would be made to contingency plans. The station thanked community stakeholders for their commitment in the fight against crime and called for continued dedication in this year."

Praedial servitudes explained

A servitude is a limited real right allowing one person to use or benefit from another’s property, or to restrict how that property owner exercises their rights. This article focuses on praedial servitudes, which exist between two neighbouring properties. In such cases, one property (the servient tenement) bears a burden in favour of another (the dominant tenement).

Disputes commonly arise between these owners, often due to disagreements over the extent and manner in which the servitude is exercised. South African courts resolve these disputes by applying the principle of civiliter modo, meaning the servitude must be exercised reasonably and with due consideration. Importantly, a servitude generally does not impose a positive obligation on the servient owner unless specifically provided for in the title deed or related conditions.

The rights and obligations of both parties depend on the terms of the servitude agree-

ment. Where either party exceeds their rights, legal remedies are available. The actio confessoria allows the dominant owner to enforce the servitude when the servient owner fails to comply, while the actio negatoria enables the servient owner to challenge excessive use by the dominant owner.

Verder wil die departement ook die maatskaplike welstand van die inwoners ondersoek. Die ondersoek sal inligting insamel oor die inwoners, hul omstandighede en die uitleg van die nedersetting. Hulle wil ook direk met die inwoners kommunikeer – “sonder inmenging” – om meer uit te vind oor of hulle uitgebuit word of nie.

Na aanleiding van dié inligting het verskeie politieke leiers ook hul mening gelug. Volgens Weldon Wells, die speaker van die Theewaterskloof-munisipaliteit en ’n GOOD-raadslid, kan die regering ’n plan beraam om die probleme te oorkom.

“As die regering R41,1 miljoen vir private veiligheidsmaatskappye betaal om te keer dat Knoflokskraal groei, kan hulle planne maak om met die gemeenskap hande te vat en die Nuwebrug herstel,” het hy gesê.

“As die speaker van hierdie munisipaliteit hoor ek daagliks die noodkrete van ons inwoners. Die minister se onthulling dat R41,1 miljoen aan private veiligheid bestee is ‘met niks om daarvoor te wys nie’ is meer as net ’n departementele mislukking – dit is ’n

belediging vir elke inwoner in Nuweberg, Libanon en Dennehof, wat meegedeel is daar is “geen begroting” vir basiese dienste nie.

John Michels, die vorige onderburgemeester en deesdae parlementslid vir die National Coloured Congress (NCC), sê hulle veroordeel ten sterkste die skandelike en onmenslike optrede van die departement waarin “kwesbare gemeenskappe onderwerp word aan apartheidstyl-taktiek van intimidasie, gedwonge verskuiwings en staatsbewaking onder die valse voorwendsel van ‘reg en orde’.

Volgens die NCC staan hulle agter die inwoners van Knoflokskraal en hulle doen ’n beroep vir die onmiddellike staking van verskuiwing, ’n volle ondersoek na kontrakte, die dringende voorsiening van basiese munisipale dienste en erkenning en beskerming van grondbesitregte vir inheemse mense.

Intussen wil die inwoners net in vrede lewe en hande met die regering neem sodat oplossings gevind kan word.

Minister Dean Macpherson has announced measures to restore law and order at the Knoflokskraal informal settlement, an 1 800-hectare occupied area along the N2 between Grabouw and Botrivier, that has been a flashpoint for service delivery protests and economic disruption since 2020. According to Macpherson the unlawful occupation of state-owned land had expanded from a small initial group into a settlement of about 4 000 structures.

Two high-profile cases nearing trial phase soon

Two high-profile criminal cases involving serious allegations against local men made appearances in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court last week, with both matters now moving toward trial phases.

BUSINESSMAN FACES CHILD-RELATED CHARGES

A 42-year-old married businessman from Hermanus appeared in court on 8 April on charges including three counts of rape, sexual grooming, and exposure of a minor to pornography. The case has been postponed to 4 May for pre-trial proceedings. The accused was arrested on 9 June last year at his business premises in Hermanus.

According to sources, underwear and other sexual equipment were confiscated during the arrest. “I can confirm a 42-year-old man was arrested for three counts of rape, sexual grooming and exposure of a minor to pornography,” said Capt Buks Hanekom, head of the Hermanus family violence, cchild protection and sexual offences unit.

Friends and family of the victims are shocked that the case has been postponed again. “The suspect only appeared

at 16:00 and that is one of the reasons why it was postponed again. We just want the whole thing to be behind us. With every court appearance it feels like we are starting the healing process all over again. But we are grateful for the community that is so supportive,” they said.

FARMER ACCUSED OF ASSAULT

In a separate matter, Overberg farmer Solms Beyers appeared in court on 7 April facing charges of assaulting his former girlfriend. The case has been set down for trial on 11 August. Beyers allegedly pulled large bushes of hair from the complainant's scalp during an altercation.

The woman, who had reportedly been in an on-and-off relationship with the accused for nearly 20 years, allegedly suffered a sprained nose, swollen eyes, facial bruising, and bald patches where hair was allegedly torn from her scalp.

The victim’s father remains determined to see justice served. “I won’t let this go even if I have to spend my life’s savings,” he said before. “I want him to be on record for what he allegedly did so that if he does it again, he will pay.”

Die Hermanus-tak van die vrouelandbouvereniging (VLV) het ’n baie interessante spreker op sy maandelikse vergadering Woensdag 8 April gehad.

Tiaan Duvenhage het die lede meer oor die gewilde “Vermicompost” vertel – ’n organiese kompos wat deur wurms vervaardig word.

Dit is redelik maklik om hierdie boerdery te begin, want al wat jy nodig het, is slegs twee plastiekkratte met ’n deksel (boor ’n paar gate in een van die kratte), ’n kraantjie, sand, wurms en afvalkos. Die “wurmtee” wat deur die kraantjie getap word, word met water verdun en is ideaal vir plante.

Om die vaste kompos te verkry, is ’n effe moeiliker proses. Die wurms moet elke 90 dae verwyder word en die grond word uitgegooi, drooggemaak en gerol om ’n fyn poeier te verkry. Duvenhage het ook verduidelik hoe om die wurms uit te kry. Die kompos, wat 2,2% fosfor, 2,5% kalium en 3% stikstof bevat, is sag en reukloos en lyk soos gemaalde koffie. Dit bevorder plantgroei en verbeter die grondstruktuur. Aangesien die kompos water stadig vrystel, bly die grond langer klam en minder water is nodig. Musical in aid of 2 charities

Residents are invited to open their hearts and homes at the end of the month as Just Dance Academy presents the beloved musical Annie at the Hermanus Auditorium –with a special twist that embodies the true spirit of giving.

Beyond the toe-tapping songs and heartwarming performances, this production of Annie serves a greater purpose: collecting much-needed donations for underprivileged children and our four-legged friends at Haws.

Annie's own story of hope and resilience, audience members are encouraged to bring unwanted clothes to support children in need throughout the Hermanus area. "We want to share warmth with those who need it most," explained organisers from Just Dance Academy. "Every piece of clothing donated could make a real difference in a child's life."

The initiative doesn't stop with children – animal lovers can contribute dog and cat food, along with blankets, to support the tireless work of the local SPCA in caring for abandoned and rescued animals. The musical runs from Thursday, 30 April through Saturday, 2 May at the Hermanus Auditorium on Harmony Avenue. ’n Groep oud-onderwysers en oudpersoneel van Swartberg Primêr het die “Swartberg-PS-ysters”-groep net minder as ’n jaar gelede gestig.

Die doel van dié groep is om kontak te behou met oud-kollegas, nuus te deel en om af en toe gesellig saam te kuier.

Die eerste informele saamkuier was ’n piekniek, wat in die Caledon-veldblommetuin gehou is.

Die Ysters bly op hoogte van mekaar se doen en late deur middel van ’n WhatsApp-groep en het ook al ’n minireünie gehou.

Iets waarna die Ysters geweldig uitsien, is ’n toer na Mosselbaai tussen 2 en 4 Oktober. Hoogtepunte sluit in ’n retoerrit met die stoomtrein Jenny van Hartenbos na Groot-Brakrivier, verblyf by “De Bakke Santos” asook ’n dag waar

besienswaardighede soos die museum, die eerste posbus en Pinnacle Point besoek sal word. Bestuurslede van die Ysters het die reisprogram onlangs met opgewonde lede bespreek. Lede het ook die geleentheid gekry om vrae oor die opkomende reis te vra. Lede van die toergroep gaan ook ’n spesiale toer-T-hemp ontvang.

Stephen Wildschut, voorsitter van die Swartberg PS-Ysters, sê: “Ons is baie opgewonde oor die toer, waaraan 53 van ons lede gaan deelneem. Hoewel ons ’n propvol program het, gaan daar darem ook tyd wees vir lekker saamkuier en

gesels. Dit gaan gewis dié toer van die jaar wees.”

Baie van die lede wat die toer gaan meemaak, woon nie in Caledon nie of het ander verpligtinge gehad, maar hulle word deur die WhatsApp-groep van alle reëlings op hoogte gehou. Koffie en tee en heerlike geroosterde toebroodjies is aan almal voorgesit voordat die praatjie begin het.

The Overberg Community Trust has for the past 28 years been active in community development and social and economic upliftment in communities across the Overberg municipal areas of Theewaterskloof, Cape Agulhas, Overstrand and Swellendam. Recently the Trust held its annual awards ceremony at the Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa. During this ceremony successful applicants who applied for financial aid to further their studies received their award certificates.

This financial aid, which is awarded in three payments throughout the year, is determined on a sliding scale according to the parents’ income. Students also regularly need to supply the Trust with progress reports and marks to keep their aid.

Reverend Patty Edwards, chairperson of the Trust, opened the event with a prayer and welcomed the guests. Leilani Abrams introduced the guests of honour whilst Colin Balie introduced the trustees. Morris Tshabalala explained the application process as well as the criteria and allocation of funds. The importance of filling out the application form correctly was once again stressed. Applicants can ask for help from any of the trustees or at the office of the Trust.

Bishop Stafford Moses, Bishop of the Diocese of False Bay, was the keynote speaker. Bishop Moses acknowledged the work of The Overberg Community Trust and the manner in which the Trust has helped to make a difference in the lives of recipients of financial assistance over the years. “I remember two slogans which gave direction and motivation to me during my formative years and as a young person,” said Bishop Moses. The first slogan, that of his primary school was Knowledge is Power. I was taught from an early stage that nobody can take away knowledge from you when you have acquired it. If you do not use it effectively it remains knowledge not transferred into action.”

The second slogan “Reach for the Stars” was that of his secondary school. “The world is your oyster. There are endless

possibilities and opportunities in the world. You are receiving an opportunity that others dream about. You might have been born in the Overberg area but it does not mean that your mindset should only be here. Be that ambassador for the Overberg Trust. As your life changes remember those who saw the potential in you,” said Bishop Moses. The Trust received 99 applications for financial assistance for 2026. Of these 78 were incomplete or proof of registration was not attached. Of the 21 approved applicants only 12 attended the awards ceremony. In order to receive the financial aid, the applicants are required to attend the awards ceremony or to present a valid excuse for not being able to attend. The nine approved applicants who did not show up for the ceremony and did not render apologies forfeited their financial aid. The 12 applicants who attended the awards ceremony received financial aid to the value of R106 000,00.

Collin Hopley’s fabulous trumpet playing entertained the guests and got many a foot tapping along. A delicious light lunch was served to the guests after the ceremony.

In true community spirit both Reverend Patty and Bishop Moses had their hair sprayed in bright colours at the CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) shavathon event which was held at the hotel on the same day as the Trust ceremony.

Zwelihle wood-fired success

In a world where youth unemployment continues to challenge South African communities, two young entrepreneurs from Zwelihle are proving that determination, skill, and vision can create opportunities where others see obstacles. Luvo Payi and Mqwalaseli Msebe have established the township's first pizza joint.

Payi's story begins in Khayelitsha, where he spent his childhood before relocating to Zwelihle in 2017 as a 17-year-old Grade 11 student. After completing his matric at Qhayiya High School, he pursued travel and tourism studies at the College of Cape Town, while his partner – a Lukhanyo Primary and Qhayiya High alumnus – honed his culinary skills through hospitality training in the Eastern Cape.

Their paths converged in the hospitality industry, where both gained invaluable experience working in restaurants and hotels. It was the partner's role as a pizza chef at Hermanus Golf Club that sparked the entrepreneurial flame. "He told me he can make 15 pizza flavors," Payi said.

The duo's business acumen led them to a crucial discovery: Zwelihle had no pizza establishment, creating a unique opportunity to become the area's pioneering pizza entrepreneurs. Their competitive edge lies in offering authentic wood-fired pizzas at affordable prices, setting them apart from the competition in surrounding areas.

What began as an outdoor operation during December's summer season – complete with challenges from wind and basic equipment – has evolved into an establishment with a residential lease agreement.

The entrepreneurs funded their venture through personal savings from their hospitality work, demonstrating the power of financial discipline and strategic planning.

Customer demand drove their innovative delivery service, leading to bicycle deliveries throughout Zwelihle and Mount Pleasant for just R10. This affordable delivery option has become their business backbone, with most orders now coming through their delivery service. "We included delivery because people kept requesting it through our website," Payi explains. The bicycle delivery model, while effective, represents one of their current challenges – the need for modern bicycles to enhance efficiency.

Their wish list includes an industrial oven, beach benches, and eventually a motorbike to expand their delivery capabilities.

Make your future

In the bustling residential areas of Hermanus, where children once played dangerously close to contaminated wastewater from improperly cleaned wheelie bins, Ayabulela Sitwayi saw more than just a mess – he saw an opportunity to protect the children of the town while building his future.

What started as a simple observation has transformed into a thriving cleaning business that proves a timeless truth: where there is a will, there is a way. "I watched children playing in dirty water that flowed from wheelie bins after manual cleaning," recalls Ayabulela. "I realised this wasn't just unsanitary – it was a major health hazard that could spread germs and diseases throughout our neighborhood."

Unlike many who might have simply complained about the problem, Ayabulela chose action. He recognised that the manual cleaning process commonly used in high-density residential areas was creating significant wastewater issues, posing serious health risks to families.

"My primary driver was seeing those children at risk," he explains. "I knew I had to design a solution that would stop the spread of germs and diseases in our community." The turning point came in 2021 when Ayabulela attended an entrepreneurship workshop at Grootbos. This formal

training helped him transition his community observation from a simple hustle into a structured, professional business model. "The workshop taught me to build a solid operational foundation before launching," he says. "I learned the difference between having an idea and running a formal company." Armed with new knowledge, Ayabulela developed a professional multi-step cleaning process that prioritises community health and environmental sustainability. His business evolved beyond wheelie bins to include window and car cleaning services, creating a comprehensive solution for local residents.

What makes Ayabulela's venture unique isn't just the service – it's the purpose. Unlike standard cleaning services focused solely on waste removal, his business addresses specific community health concerns while creating local employment opportunities. "I didn't want to just clean bins," he emphasises. "I wanted to protect families and create jobs for others in my community." After securing external funding for essential equipment, Ayabulela's business has grown from a one-person operation into an employer. Botrivier, wat tydens die Ebrahim Patel-rugbytoernooi in George net-net teen Safcol verloor het, het daarvoor vergoed en ’n wegholoorwinning van 51-0 oor Genadendal aangeteken. Safcol, wat vanjaar goed op dreef is, het Kleinmond met 68-5 afgeransel. Universals van Stanford het Caledon maklik 5710 geklop terwyl Hawston 29-17 teen Bredasdorp Rangers gewen en Atlantics 39-22 teen die Sea Hawks oorheers het. Grabouw het egter 17-13 teen Villiersdorp vasgeval.

Dit is veral Caledon-ondersteuners wat nie hul teleurstelling kan keer nadat hul span week ná week aan die agterspeen suig nie – veral ná Saterdag se nederlaag, wat ondersteuners na Facebook laat wend het. Van hulle hou vol hulle staan bankvas agter hul span terwyl ander wonder watter planne beraam is sodat die trotse Caledon-span weer met glorie kan speel en as een van die topspanne in die Overberg terugkom. Die bestuur van die Caledon-rugbyklub het ’n mediaverklaring uitgereik oor die negatiewe kommentaar oor die span en die bestuur. “Hoewel ons die reg op ’n mening respekteer, bly ons gefokus op die werk wat voorlê en die toekoms van ons klub,” het hulle in die persverklaring gesê. Volgens hulle is die uitvoerende bestuur tans besig om die besluite wat hulle op die jaarvergadering aanvaar het, in werking te stel.

“Hierdie besluite vorm die fondament van ons huidige rigting: Ons het ’n direkteur van rugby en ’n toegewyde afrigtingspan aangestel om ons rugbyprogram met duidelike struktuur en aanspreeklikheid te lei. Die klub funksioneer volgens ’n goed gedefinieerde visie en missie, strategiese plan en jaarprogram, wat beter beplanning, organisasie en uitvoering van alle kernaktiwiteite verseker. Die klub het ’n vaste besluit geneem om nie spelers te vergoed nie. In plaas daarvan bied ons ondersteuning ten opsigte van vervoerkoste vir spelers uit omliggende dorpe. Ons huidige

spelers en uitvoerende bestuur kan nie verantwoordelik gehou word vir historiese tekortkominge nie. Inteendeel, diegene wat tans betrokke is, is juis die mense wat besig is om die klub te herbou en vorentoe te neem,” het hulle gesê. Volgens hulle is hul fokus duidelik: “Om ’n nuwe generasie spelers te bou wat die Caledon-rugbyklub met trots verteenwoordig – gewortel in lojaliteit, ontwikkeling en gemeenskapsidentiteit.”

As ’n mens na die punteleer kyk, is dit duidelik wie die topvier-spanne is wat dit gaan uitspook om die beste span in die Overberg te wees. Tans

is Botla Fire heel bo op die punteleer, gevolg deur Safcol, Universals en Hawston. Elkeen van die spanne het 25 punte ná vyf wedstryde.

Atlantics, wat vanjaar die eerste keer in die Grootuitdaag-reeks speel, is tans in die vyfde plek.

Saterdag speel die voorlopers, Botrivier, teen Kleinmond, terwyl Safcol teen Bredasdorp speel, Universals teen Hawston, Grabouw teen Caledon, Atlantics teen Genadendal en Sea Hawks teen Villiersdorp. Die wedstryd wat seker die meeste belangstelling gaan lok, is Hawston teen Universals.

Klubs teken groot tellings aan Masters to do battle

Hermanus will transform into a strategic battleground this weekend as the Hermanus Chess Club Open 2026 draws players from across the region for two days of competition. The tournament kicks off Friday evening with a Blitz Championship at 18:00, where rapid-fire moves and split-second decisions will test players’ tactical prowess. The real showdown begins Saturday morning with the Rapid Tournament, featuring six competitive sections designed to accommodate players of all skill levels.

Taking place at the impressive Hennie Mentz Hall at Curro Hermanus, the event promises to be one of the year's premier chess competitions, boasting a prize pool exceeding R50 000. The Championship section alone offers R10 000 to the winner, with substantial rewards extending through the top five positions. Tournament organisers have created an inclusive environment with sections ranging from the elite Championship division (for players rated 1 700+) down to categories for u-10 players. Special recognition awaits top female performers, juniors and senior players across sections.
