Die twee skole kom elke jaar byeen waar hulle in rugby, netbal en hokkie meeding. Die voorval waarin die gr.12-leerder van die Hoërskool Punt, wat vir die skool se tweede span speel, op pad na die busse met ’n mes gesteek is, het voor menige leerder en toeskouer plaasgevind. Een van die toeskouers het aan Hermanus Times gesê hulle almal was geskok toe hulle dit sien en dat so ’n voorval in hul stil dorp [Bredasdorp] plaasgevind het. “Wat my die meeste grief, is die feit dat dit ’n tiener is wat die daad gepleeg het. Die Morawiese kerk, wat as die tweede oudste kerk in Suid-Afrika beskou kan word, is in 1738 gestig en deur die jare het die sendingdorpie so saam met Afrikaans gegroei. Vandag dien Genadendal as simbool van die ontstaan van Afrikaans. Dit was ook in dié kerk waar menige

inwoner van die Overberg gevorm is en waar hul wortels steeds diep in die omgewing gegrawe is. By die kerk is daar ook al baie bruilofte gehou, kinders gedoop en mense ter ruste gelê. Maar soos alle goeie dinge vir voortbestaan in stand gehou moet word, word die Genadendal Morawiese kerk tans gerestoureer. Volgens museum-personeel het krake in die mure ontstaan en die fondasie het glo geskuif. “Die krake is so groot dat ’n mens amper daardeur kan stap. Ons kerk is ons trots en daarom is dit vir ons belangrik om die restourasiewerk so deeglik as moontlik te doen,” het hulle gesê. Hulle het ook bevestig dat hulle steeds besig is met restourasie en dat hulle in dié stadium nie kan sê wanneer dit voltooi sal wees nie.

Acting MM at helm The Overstrand Municipality has a new face at the helm. Edward Jantjies has been appointed Acting Municipal Manager, effective Tuesday 11 August for the duration of Dr Dean O’Neill’s secondment to George Municipality. He brings more than 31 years of local-government experience to the role, having served in senior-management positions across finance, corporate services, human resources and organisational development. Jantjies specialises in municipal governance, performance management, labour relations and the implementation of the municipal staff regulations. A career highlight, he noted, was his tenure as Director: Corporate Services at Mossel Bay Municipality from 2007 to 2022, along with his work as a Lead Consultant for Talent Management. His academic credentials are equally impressive – a Master of Public

Administration (MPA) from NorthWest University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management, a Edward Jantjies Higher Diploma in Education, a Bachelor of Economics and several other qualifications and professional certifications spanning local government, finance, human resources, and governance. No more sardine deaths The mass sardine deaths that alarmed communities from Saldanha Bay to Gansbaai may have eased. But the mystery is far from over as the department races to uncover what triggered the unprecedented marine mortality event. After days of dead and dying sardines washing ashore along the Western Cape coast, the immediate crisis has subsided with no reported deaths since Thursday 6 August. However, a major scientific investigation into the elusive cause of the mortatilities has been intesified. The cause has not yet been confirmed, said the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). “[However] a wide-ranging investigation involving the Department, research institutions, specialist laboratories, the fishing industry and other collaborating scientists is continuing.” The DFFE added that samples of dead sardines have been obtained from Saldanha Bay, Hout Bay, Betty’s Bay, Gansbaai and the Cape Canyon area. Moreover, it is believed that healthy sardines from Elands Bay and Lambert’s Bay have also been collected for comparison. Meanwhile, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) and Rhodes University are undertaking disease testing. SAIAB and a specialist commercial laboratory are screening samples for marine biotoxins. “The Department’s scientists are examining water samples, stomach contents and gills for evidence of harmful algae. Basic biological examinations,

including measurements of size, weight, condition and maturity, and macroscopic examination of the gills, have also been undertaken,” the DFFE said. While it has not been detected in the water samples or sardine stomach contents examined to date, “a harmful algal bloom caused by Alexandrium catenella was present in Saldanha Bay when the mortality began”. The harmful alga had previously been associated with sardine mortalities in the country and it remains one of the possible causes under investigation. “No wider effects on the marine ecosystem have been reported to date,” said the DFFE. “Sardines are nevertheless an important food source for seabirds, seals and predatory fish and the Department will continue to monitor any possible effects on the sardine population and its predators.” CHANGES IN NEARSHORE WATERS AND CURRENT Oceanographic information supplied by SAEON and the CSIR indicates enhanced upwelling, unusually cold nearshore water and low oxygen in St Helena Bay before the event. Moreover, “a southward-moving coastal current could also have transported affected fish from the West Coast towards Cape Point and farther east”. These observations provide useful context but still do not establish the cause. The DFFE has urged members of the public should not collect, or consume dead fish found on beaches.

Police urge public to come forward Police have finally verified that the decomposed body of a man has been found, but in Stanford and not at Die Plaat in Gansbaai, as originally reported by Hermanus Times. They said the remains were discovered on Sunday 3 August at Soepies Klip Beach, near Stanford. The newspaper reported on a body found at a beach, but police could not confirm due to early reports saying it was found in Gansbaai. Dead whales found near Dyer Island Ishmael Mabena What usually begins as a season of new life has begun with heartbreaking loss, after two southern-right whales, an adult and a newborn calf, were found dead near Dyer Island. The two lifeless whales drifting in the same waters left researchers asking a devastating question: could a newborn calf have lost its mother days before it ever had a chance to survive on its own? “The start of the southern-right whale season is usually a welcome sight along the South African coastline,” said Christine Wessels of Marine Dynamics. “Sadly, this year’s season has also brought the discovery of two dead whales in the Greater Dyer Island ecosystem, a sobering reminder of the threats these animals continue to face.” The southern-right whale season is the period these whale species return to calve, nurse and breed. First, an adult southern-right whale was found on 2 August during a Marine Big 5 tour by Marine Dynamics. The crew encountered the dead adult floating offshore. Underwater footage was subsequently collected at sea and “the team documented severe trauma to the adult whale’s head,” according to Wessels. The whale suffered injuries highly consistent with a vessel strike, including “the loss of the upper jaw ahead of the eye, the absence of baleen plates and a severed tongue. “The mortality was reported to the Overberg Stranding Network, with a ship strike considered the most likely cause of death. Examinations revealed that this was a male calf with an unhealed umbilicus which meant that it had been born quite recently. “It was particularly heartbreaking to see the calf’s unhealed umbilicus, which tells us he was only a few weeks old,” said Dr Loraine Shuttleworth. She is the head of research at the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) and led the response team examining the deaths.

The close proximity of the whales’ deaths raised another question beyond relatability between them. Could the calf have lost its mother before it could survive on its own? “It is always sad to encounter such magnificent animals lifeless at sea,” said Shuttleworth, “particularly at the beginning of the whale season when we look forward to welcoming them back to our coastline.” SAMPLES COLLECTED Samples of the whales have since been collected by a team of experts and researchers from Marine Dynamics, DICT and the University of Pretoria’s Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit. “Genetic analysis will determine whether the two animals were related

while also contributing to a broader collaborative research project investigating ship strikes on large whales,” Wessels said. She added that with each case documented, valuable information is gathered and improves understanding of vessel strikes. They also contribute “to evidence-based management measures aimed at reducing their occurrence.” Genetic analysis is yet to reveal any relation between the two whales. Meanwhile, an African penguin was rescued during a visit to the carcass. The penguin required rehabilitation and was transported to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai, where it was expected to receive specialised care before being released back into the wild.

Two exciting events are coming up in the Overberg: the Brew Run heads into the mountains around Greyton, while the Voet van Afrika crosses the open roads and farmlands between Napier and Bredasdorp. Both promise a proper test, memorable scenery and a finish-line reward worth the training. BREW RUN IN GREYTON Greyton’s Brew Run offers three ways to experience the area’s fynbos, mountain views and rewarding trails. Whether a serious challenge or a sociable morning outdoors, there is a distance to suit. ○ 21 km Trail Half Marathon – the ultimate Brew Run challenge: This is the route for runners who want to go deep into the mountains surrounding Greyton. Breathtaking views, varied terrain and scenery that makes every climb worth it combine to create a serious run for those who want to earn their beer. ○ 13 km Trail Run – the perfect middle ground: Winding through some of the most beautiful landscapes the Greyton area has to offer, the 13 km delivers big views and memorable trails. It is a rewarding option for those ready to push themselves without committing to the full half-marathon challenge. ○ 6 km Fun Run/Walk – short on distance, big on beauty: This dog-friendly introductory route gives everyone a taste of the stunning fynbos and mountain scenery that makes Greyton special. It is fun, accessible and a great reason to lace up your shoes, or bring along a keen canine companion. The programme includes a full marathon, half marathon and 10 km race, each with its own challenge. The event will take place on 18 and 19 September. ○ Full Marathon – 42 km: The full marathon starts at 06:00 on the Elim Road, approximately 8,5 km from Bredasdorp. After about 1,5 km on tar, runners turn onto a farm road and follow it for 12 km. Along the way they pass the original marathon start as it was run in 1978. The gravel road is fairly narrow but leaves enough room to pass slower runners, and although there is a hill or two, the

first 13 km are not too difficult. Then the climbing begins, including a 470 m ascent over 2 km that may feel never-ending. A cash prize is on offer for the King of the Mountain: the first man to reach the water station at the FM Tower on top of the mountain, provided he also completes the race. From the FM Tower, a wonderful downhill cruise on gravel leads to the main road in Napier. ○ Half-Marathon: The half-marathon starts at 07:30 in Napier at the Agulhas School of Skills in Plein Street. Runners turn right into Cecil and right into Reservoir Street, then follow the road to join the 42 km runners at the Napier BelangeGroep water station. The 16 km stretch between Napier and Bredasdorp is on tar and includes several long, taxing hills, but there is plenty to enjoy in the green-and-gold farmland along the R316. The first lady at the Spar

water station at the 11 km-to-go mark who completes the race can claim the cash prize for Queen of The Voet van Afrika. For the final 3 km, half-marathon runners join the 10 km field into Bredasdorp, where friendly spectators cheer them all the way to the finish. ○10 km – a short race with a serious sting: The 10 km has a similar profile to its half-marathon big brother. The first few kilometres are a steady upward climb on tar roads through Bredasdorp, before the route heads onto gravel roads through fynbos and farmlands on the outskirts of town. The middle half is mainly downhill, giving runners an opportunity to enjoy the scenery, but save something for the steep hill on the way back into Bredasdorp. Normal road-running shoes are advised.
