Fisherfolk are fed-up

rregularities within the fishing industry have prompted small-scale fishers from across the Western Cape to stand together.

“It is important that all our local fishermen – from the Overberg region and Cape Agulhas – must raise their concerns,” said a local fisherman. “That is why we must all turn out in force for the meeting on 28 September at the Skilpad Hall in Vredenburg.” The meeting is convened by Charles Jordaan, chairperson of the South African Fishing Community Forum. Jordaan says traditional and indigenous fishing communities and their dependents are currently struggling due to the quota system, drownings at sea and the lack of compensation for bereaved families. He also stresses that the limited rights afforded to traditional and indigenous fishing communities must be urgently addressed. This is not the first time Jordaan has been involved in fishing rights issues. As chairperson of the St Helena Bay Fishing Community Forum, established in 2009 and representing 134 members, he has for years advocated for the equal inclusion of traditional, subsistence and indigenous fishers into the mainstream fishing industry. The forum refers to a 2007 Equality Court order that prescribes the equal inclusion of these communities, but alleges that the order has yet to be implemented by the department. NEW MODEL NEEDED “Since then, the forum has submitted numerous complaints and appeals,” Jordaan said. In a collective statement dated 1 September, the forum calls for the cooperative model to be replaced with private companies or small, medium, and micro enterprises, for the

small-scale fisheries sector to be removed from the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA) because it is allegedly discriminatory, and for traditional and indigenous fishers to be granted access to high-value species such as pelagic fish.

In an appeal letter dated 21 August, signed by Jordaan and 38 other fishers, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)

Vandag, vloei die water steeds - en die familie boer vandag nog op dieselfde grond. “Ons is tans die vyfde geslag wat op die plaas boer,” vertel Hendri Punt, wat tans daar boer. “Ons groot-oupagrootjie het hoofsaaklik met suiwer merino’s geboer en wol was die hoofinkomste.” Vandag het die boerdery egter v erander. Hulle het byna 25 jaar gelede met d orpers begin boer en die afgelope amper 10 jaar is vleismerino’s ook deel van die onderneming. Dit was ’n vleismerino/dorper- kruising wat hulle onlangs ’n tweede plek by Lamb Champs in Bloemfontein besorg het – met slegs een lam ingeskryf. Lamb Champs is ’n jaarlikse kompetisie wat toegewy is aan die uitstal van die beste lamprodusente van oor Suid-Afrika heen. Die kompetisie word deur Suider-Afrika Agri-Inisia tief aangebied, waar familieboere bymekaarkom om vir die titel vir die smaaklikste en hoogste gehalte lam mee te ding. Volgens Punt het die omgewing ook ’n

groot rol in die prestasie gespeel. “Wat Dewetsdorp besonders maak, is die kombinasie van sy natuurlike veld, klimaat en die manier waarop die familie met hul diere werk. “Anders as in die Karoo, waar die karoobossie ’n kenmerkende deel van lammers se dieet vorm, is Dewetsdorp hoofsaaklik ’n grasveldgebied. Die skape wei op ’n verskeidenheid natuurlike grasse met kleiner karoïde bossies wat tussen die gras voorkom. Die streek se hoogte, warm somers en baie koue, droë winters met sneeubedekking beteken die skape moet gehard wees.” ‘GEHALTE, OORSPRONG EN VERTROUE’ Hy glo hierdie kombinasie van goeie natuurlike weiding en die klimaat word uiteindelik in die gehalte van die lam weerspieël. “Maar goeie lamsvleis begin by genetika, goeie voeding en veldbestuur, dieregesondheid en om die lam op die regte tydstip markgereed te kry. Die tweede plek by Lamb Champs wys die Suid-Vrystaat het ook ’n eie lamsvleisidentiteit waarop ons trots kan wees.” Die familie se bande met die Overberg het egter beteken dat hulle na die mooi streek uitgebrei het. Following sustained protest and an appeals process, 297 vessels were reinstated. The department also issued exemptions allowing small-scale fishers to continue operating their traditional linefish vessels while they apply for their updated 2026-’27 permits. In his appeal, Jordaan acknowledges that many fishers do not view the convenors favourably, but pleads that this should not hinder them from attending the meeting. “While I should not have to, I will nonetheless earnestly appeal to you to participate in the proceedings,” he says. Bus crashes, driver arrested A 57-year-old bus driver has been arrested for driving under the influence after the green Volvo bus he was driving crashed into a wall in Mount Pleasant. According to police the crash occurred at approximately 18:35 on Thursday 3 September on the corner of Angelier Street and Swartdam Road. Thembakazi Mdukana of provincial police confirmed the driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He sustained injuries in the crash and was subsequently taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. The driver remained under police guard, according to police. No other injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. It is not yet clear how the bus ended up crashing into the wall, or whether any other vehicles were involved. Owners of the property have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage to the wall or whether the bus was carrying passengers at the time of the crash. DRIVER ALLEGEDLY DRUNK The circumstances surrounding the collision remained

under investigation. An unverified report of the events leading up to the accident on Facebook claims “the bus driver was coming from Zwelihle’s direction and turned into Mount Pleasant.” It further claimed the driver had kept turning “the whole time, perhaps because he was drunk and collided with the fence in fron of Enlightened [Education Trust Hermanus] as you go into the gate. He then backed up on the road, which is why the bus is facing the shop opposite.” Golden Arrow Bus Services subsequently confirmed the bus did not belong to them as they do not operate in Hermanus. The incident comes after the bus left the roadway and collided with the wall of the Enlighten Education Trust Hermanus at the intersection. Emergency services responded to the scene. Enlighten Education Trust Hermanus will give an update in correspondence with Hermanus Times once it has gathered all information regarding the damages and cost of repairs. Further details, including the results of any blood-alcohol testing and the driver’s expected court appearance, had not been made publicly available at the time of writing.

Fire season gets to an early start Ishmael Mabena A homeowner in Pearly Beach suffered burns while attempting to rescue his dogs from a house ablaze last week, while firefighters reported extensive damage to the property's second floor. No-one was in the house when the fire started. But the homeowner entered it to try and save his two dogs, according to acting Overstrand Municipal Manager Edward Jantjies. “The owner sustained injuries after entering the burning house to save his dogs [and was subsequently] treated on scene by Critical Medical Care Private Ambulance Services.” The fire was reported at 17:10 on Monday 31 August, with the first firefighting vehicle arriving about 17:30. Firefighters deployed two fire engines, a water tanker and a mobile command vehicle to the incident. Jantjies said the distance between the Gansbaai Fire Station and Pearly Beach means the journey to the scene takes approximately 20 minutes by fire engine. CAUSE UNKNOWN The affected property was a wooden double-storey house, its second floor suffering extensive damage. The cause of the fire remained unknown and undetermined. According to Jantjies the extensive burning of the wooden structure meant no clear burn patterns could be identified to establish how the blaze started. “As the structure was wooden

However, “members of the public must remain behind the barrier lines, as falling debris could cause injury.” There was no reported risk of the fire reaching any neighbouring properties. PREPARING FOR LONGER EL NIÑO SEASON The Western Cape is reported to face one of its most severe fire seasons with El Niño events projected to last eight months from its previous four, as previously reported by NovaNews. In the 2025-’26 summer season, it is reported that the province experienced its most severe fires in a quarter of a century. Firefighting crews battled an unprecedented “number of blazes that started weeks earlier than usual and cost more than R15 million to contain.”

Moreover, the high-risk fire season was confirmed to stretch from October this year to May 2027 by the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell. ‘RAPID-ATTACK DOCTINE’ He noted that this could be due to extreme El Niño weather patterns and climate change. Therefore, firefighter training was brought forward to September “to support the ‘rapid attack’ doctrine,” writes NovaNews, “which has successfully extinguished 90% of ignitions within the first hour.” In the Overberg Jantjies has asked the public always to keep the road clear and adhere to instructions from emergency personnel on fire scenes. “If you see smoke or fire, report immediately to Overstrand Municipality Fire & Rescue on 028 312 2400.”

The pool’s history is intimately linked to Hermanus.

The story behind Fick’s Pool Today, a stranger looking at Fick’s Pool would scarcely believe that this secluded tidal pool, tucked in a cove off Marine Drive on the way to Westcliff, was once one of Hermanus’ top attractions and social hubs. Older residents and long-time visitors remember it with great and special fondness. In her unpublished memoir, quoted in SJ du Toit’s Hermanus Stories III, the late Una Graven, grandchild of founding father Christian Warrington, recalled: “When we were approaching our teenage years Fikkie’s Pool was our summer haunt… It was where it all happened – splashing in the tidal pool, being frightened when the high tide swept over the retaining wall, clambering over the large rocks… It was giggling and gossiping and taking shy peeks at the opposite sex.” But which Mr Fick lent his name to the pool? The answer comes largely through stories passed down through generations. POOL’S ORIGINS Dr Robin Lee of the Hermanus History Society identified two candidates. The first was Mr JJ Fick (1875-1934), principal of the local school from 1921 until his retirement in 1931, who lived in a house in Marine Drive opposite the pool. Local historian SJ du Toit and a 1950 Hermanus Times article both credited him with having the pool developed. The second candidate was Mr Josias “Sias” Servaas Fick (1830–1919), a farmer from the Caledon district and former field cornet. In August 1889 he was granted two adjacent erven on the cliff directly above a sheltered inlet that surveyor’s plans described as a “bathing place”. Mr Fick took to swimming there every morning and persuaded others to join him. Locals soon referred to the spot – previously known as “Die Gat” – as “Fick se Gat,” later softened to “Fick se Poel” and eventually anglicised to “Fick’s Pool”. In February 2026 the Fick family challenged the principal theory with a well-argued report, complete with photos and surveyor’s plans. After extensive collaboration with family members Jos Rabie and Lampie Fick, the Hermanus History Interest Group concluded that Josias Servaas Fick was the more likely namesake. A surveyor’s plan dated August 1886 and old photographs – one showing children bathing before the sea wall was built – suggest the pool was already a swimming spot well before Principal Fick’s arrival in 1921. The pool’s name has not been without controversy. SHORTLIVED NAME CHANGE In 1949 the municipality abruptly changed it to “Mermaid’s Pool”, much to the consternation of residents. On 5 April 1973 the council reversed the decision and the name “Fick’s Pool” was restored. Electric cars make waves South Africa's electric vehicle market is accelerating faster than most people realise. According to the The Automotive Business Council (Naamsa) 16 289 new energy vehicles were sold in the first seven months of 2026 - an 88% increase on the same period last year and already equivalent to 97,5% of total NEV sales for all of 2025. In July 2026 alone, 3 096 units were sold, more than double the 1 506 sold in July 2025. The breakdown tells its own story. Traditional hybrids still lead with 8 078 units sold year-to-date, but plug-in hybrids are the fastest-growing category, surging 486,7% year-on-year. Fully electric battery vehicles have reached 2 360 units, with more than 50 different models now available in South Africa. AutoTrader reports a 220% increase in EV searches, and March 2026 set a singlemonth record of 389 electric vehicle sales. Nationally, electric and electrified vehicles now account for over 4% of the new vehicle market. That may sound modest, but it represents a doubling in just twelve months. More than a year without load-shedding has eased one of the biggest practical concerns holding consumers back - the fear of not being able to charge. Hermanus already has a small foothold. Rubicon has installed twin 22kW chargers at the Checkers forecourt on Mitchell Street, open around the clock at R5,88 per

kWh. A few guesthouses offer overnight charging from standard outlets. And in August 2025, the EV Now exhibition at Hermanus High School put fully electric vehicles in front of local residents for the first time, with a fleet that included the BMW i5, Volvo XC40, Volvo EX30, and the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ tackling Honingklip's 4x4 track. The event proved a point: once people experience the silent, instant torque of electric driving, scepticism gives way to curiosity. EV Now's all-electric excursion through the Overberg - from Beaumont Wines to Betty's Bay to Hermanus - completed the day without needing a charge. The Garden Route, by contrast, is moving ahead with a public- private pledge to establish EV charging stations along the N2 corridor from Cape Town International to Plettenberg Bay, with a new station already confirmed for George.
